The Townhouse Reader’s Notes
Hey, I finished my series of Moira focused stories on Archive of Our Own. As I don’t plan to write any more in this series, here are my notes for it. Beware, there are lots of notes. Also don’t forget to read the series first as otherwise it won’t make much sense. https://archiveofourown.org/series/1073319
This was my first fan fiction project - In fact, it’s my first fiction project. I’ve done plenty of writing beforehand but most of that has been mostly non-fiction focused. I think the last story I wrote was back in high school so it’s been strange to start telling stories again.
I don’t think any fictional character has ever grabbed my brain and sunk her talons in as much as Moira O’Deodrain. I don’t even like playing the game but I love the world and characters it creates. As for Moira, she is a great character presented by Blizzard but with plenty of space to write her in different ways. Despite being a villain, I don’t see here as evil - she is just incredibly motivated to keep pushing progress forward. It of course doesn’t help that i have a soft spot for tall, ginger girls who are smarter than I am and have a cute accent.
Why Moicy? Well I’ll admit, for a long time Pharamercy was my pairing of choice. However, some of the incredible work from community soon dragged me over to the scientific pairing. Part of this was down to the symmetrical elements to it - the light and dark side, the way the two fit together, that matching spray. They are incredibly similar - both are experts in the field, pushing boundaries. The difference is that Moira is willing to push the moral boundary as well as the technological one. I don’t think Angela is 100% morally clean (she has the literal power over life and death) but she is definitely on the brighter side.
Anyway: reading notes. Basically these are the head cannons that were used when writing the “The Townhouse” series as well as few little things. Some were in from the start while other evolved as I thought carefully about characters I wanted to focus on. There are also few other prompts I’m probably not going to go into - I’d like to wrap this series up in a neat little bow.
The Townhouse Layout:
Basement - Cellar, hidden lab/armoury
Ground floor - entrance, hall, cloakroom, lounge, small bathroom, open plan kitchen/dining room, conservatory, small garden
First floor - spare bedroom with ensuite (Normally Emily’s), spare bedroom, bathroom
Second floor - Master bedroom with ensuite, Angela’s Study, store room
Attic - Moira’s study
Other Notes
The idea of Emily being Moira’s niece is just perfect - it makes the whole “Meeting the family” much more interesting while also pushing Tracer/Moira into a situation where they interact other than fighting.
Making it that Emily didn’t know about her loved ones escapades is silly but it gives Moira a reason to work with Tracer rather than just being a grinning presence looming over her
Although maybe she does know!
Timing is a bit nebulous but I had to get in Emily dressing up as Jack Morrison for Halloween
The Townhouse is as much Angela’s as Moira’s. Having Lena visit this house/Sombra being left alone in it would probably lead to some interesting questions. I presume that many people in Talon/Overwatch (especially those from the old days) know about Moira’s and Angela’s relationship - it’s just the public/newer members that don’t know.
Tracer must have had a very interesting New Year, especially once she got back to Overwatch :v
Angela and Moira full on work together on each projects. Back channels and such. This has led to some interesting attributions in each other papers.
Mercy played a hand in making Reaper. This is something I’ve had in my brain since the game was released and although Blizzard have shown Moira experimenting on him, I like the darker tone that Mercy gains by maybe being responsible for Gabe’s condition
Moira joined Overwatch before Angela. Before becoming lab based, Moira did serve some time as a combat medic (so imagine her in Mercy’s costume from Uprising). When she returned to the field with Blackwatch. I really like the idea of Ana mentoring Moira, helping to fill in the gaps between “Genetics PHD” and “Special Operations Medic/Murder Machine”.
Ana’s comment about the Aide being the caretaker was a link to a side story I was going to tell about the day Moira was fired from Overwatch. The Aide (British, former SF so ideal backup for Ana) was going to have known Colm (Moira’s brother in the military I made up for part 2) very well (at the very least having served alongside each other, if not in a relationship). This would have been where the photo of Colm on the white painted tank would have been introduced. The inprogress plot line would have put it near the current site of Oasis (Perhaps protecting it while it was being built?) to add another element of Moira living and working there. However, I never got the motivation to write it and so he’ll just have to live on as a mention.
Moira’s family was kind of sad to make as I knew the end result was EVERYONE IS DEAD
On the other hand though, giving Moira a happy supportive family slightly softens her - and the mental image of her parents being smaller and less scientifically minded but still super proud of their giant PHD daughter.
Moira’s pets are obviously inspired by her sprays. I like the idea of her having pets showing the fact that Moira isn’t just obsessed with murdering living things. She can still care for things outside. The names are related to irish authors except for Dougal - I just like the idea of highly educated, PHD holder, lover of fine arts Moira using a Father Ted reference
Sombra is probably one of my favourite characters in Overwatch other than Moira. Despite being on the “works for Talon” side she also has goals that don’t revolve around Talon’s terrorist activity. Like funding for Moira’s work, it’s all just a means to an end.
For plot reasons, of course she would leap to get a favour owed to her by Moira by helping to remove the house from any databases.

Moira: A Fate Fulfilled
“So it’s always interesting to think back on the ideation of a hero, you know - how do we start, we get that question a lot.  And with Moira, it was a little bit of gameplay and a little bit of story.  You know - we heard your feedback, you guys wanted a new healer in the game, and we felt the same way.  Um, so we really started there.  And uh, we have a lot of benevolent healers in the game - we have an angel, we have a monk, a mother, and the most upbeat, like, positive dj that you’ve ever met.  So we felt like it was time for something a little bit more morally ambiguous, a little bit more shady.  So we started there, and we started with these concepts.” - Arnold Tsang, Moira Reveal Panel (timestamp: 4:52 - https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=292)
---
Question: yeah, so I know that Tracer was kinda inspired by the “Jumper” class in Titan and all that, and there was a couple of other heroes in Overwatch that were inspired by scrapped classes from Titan, and I was wondering if Moira was one of them, and what other types of abilities or class playstyles from Titan would you like to incorporate into future heroes of Overwatch? Geoff Goodman: Moira’s definitely like - completely [from] scratch, there wasn’t really anything there from Titan, and a lot of them were like that.

Tumblr media
From scratch, huh?
---
In mid-June of 2016, a redditor posted a long and incredibly well-thought out theory, citing in-game interactions and designs, on why they believed Mercy was actually “the true villain” of Overwatch.
Tumblr media
You can find the post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/4okg03/a_long_theory_mercy_is_the_true_overwatch_villain/
Perhaps their biggest hypothesis was that Mercy had been the one to incorrectly resurrect Blackwatch Commander Gabriel Reyes/Reaper, which had resulted in an antagonism between the two characters, one representing an “angelic savior” and the other representing “the embodiment of death.”  They concluded with:
Tumblr media
Yes.
This is where the “Evil Mercy” theory really got started.
I remember it, because it was one of the first big “lore theories” on Overwatch I had ever read.
In time, the “Evil Mercy” or alternately, the “Mercy failed to correctly resurrect Reaper” theory spread pretty far.  Among the discussions was a cited interaction between the two characters that people swore they heard in the game.  This interaction goes something like this:
Mercy: This isn’t what I had in mind for you... Reaper: You knew exactly what you were doing.
Or alternately
Reaper: Remember, you’re the one responsible for all this. Mercy: This wasn’t my plan for you, Reyes...
Except there was a major problem.
Neither version of these supposed interactions existed.
Fans were baffled.  Many people were convinced it existed, or had existed and then been removed from the game.  The only source was an early Hammeh video from May 2016, just after the beta of the game launched, in which you can find the line:
Reaper: Don’t forget - you’re the one responsible for this. (https://youtu.be/PoKRFx5Sb5g?t=245)
However, unbeknownst to many fans, Michael Chu had debunked the existence of the exchange for a long time.
“I'm not sure where it came from (maybe there is another line that sounds similar to it), but the "this is not what I intended for you, Reyes" line/exchange does not actually exist in the game.” - Michael Chu, July 22, 2016 (https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20747844983#post-16)
The theory continued to spread until Michael retweeted his Blizzard Forums post on his twitter in January 2017 (https://twitter.com/westofhouse/status/822513004784664576?lang=en)
After that, it started dying down.
But it was about that same time that fans of the game began asking for a new support hero -
A morally-ambiguous or even outright evil one. (Real talk, you will get hundreds if not thousands of post on this exact subject if you search “evil healer” or “Talon healer” in the Overwatch subreddit, some as far back as 7 or 8 months ago, so March-ish, and at least a few as old as a year ago).
Most of the fan ideas about an “evil healer” involved some sort of life-leech or life-draining ability in which the “evil healer” could draw health from opponents and then redistribute it to their allies, pretty standard to a fantasy warlock or black mage-type character, except modified for Overwatch’s “firm sci-fi” settings.
Meanwhile, what flew quietly under almost everyone’s radar was the release of Oasis, first onto the PTR in December 2016, and then live servers in January 2017.
As far as I can tell, Hammeh was once again the only source really covering the surprisingly dark and morally ambiguous intent of some aspects of the map.  You can find that here: https://youtu.be/6GE11k0X9sQ?t=337.
More importantly -
Hammeh was the first source to compare Oasis directly to the Solder Enhancement Program.
Hammeh: “Remember that...Oasis in the present-day, we’ve had the Soldier Enhancement Program, or whatever took effect on Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes for - roughly - twenty-six years or so ago?  Given that Morrison and Reyes - pre-his current existence as Reaper, of course - were the products of that twenty-six-year-old program, what could a city of scientists...without perhaps any moral limits on their research, have achieved in Oasis?”
(Congrats on calling it, Hammeh, you deserve mad props) And he brings up a point very near and dear to my heart:
Hammeh: The last known place that we’ve seen Mercy was actually in a Middel Eastern area - I sort of estimated, trying to guess from this map, it could be maybe Iraq or Iran, but what if she was, perhaps, in Oasis?  What would she be doing here?  But, who knows?  It’d be fascinating if we saw Mercy turn up at Oasis at some time in the future.  Given that Mercy made big breakthroughs in nanobiology, one wonders if, maybe, she worked with some people in Oasis...or not.  Complete speculation, but I could see it working.
Sometime after Uprising, in May 2017, I posted a (rather rambling) essay on how Overwatch was incorporating “horror stories” and “tales of the apocalypse” into the game, even “in fun modes” like Junkenstein’s Revenge.  But one of the big points was that I speculated on the possible Mercy-Oasis connections:
http://segadores-y-soldados.tumblr.com/post/159665523340/overwatch-apocalypse-now
The most important one, however, is this set (I cannot find the direct quotes, so I’m basing this off memory but):
Sombra: “What are we doing here?” Reaper: “We’re here to see an old friend.”
Now this is extremely interesting.  One of the prevailing fan theories is that Angela “Mercy” Ziegler may have connections to Oasis - she is depicted in the Recall short as being located somewhere in the Middle East, particularly somewhere in present-day Iraq, which is where “the city of Oasis” is located.  In the Reflections comic, she is shown to be working on some sort of “active field duty” in a tent that is brightly-lit.  In the “We Are Overwatch” short, she rescues a young girl on the edge of a large city with multiple skyscrapers in the background.
I know there is already speculation that, if Mercy is in fact located in Oasis, Reaper is “out for her.”  Another version of the theory goes that Reaper is coming to see her to ask her for help with his current state of existence (note that I am not a fan of the “Mercy botched saving Reaper” theory because that has been effectively debunked by Chu).
Because if there is anyone capable of helping Reaper restore himself, it would be “the doctor of death herself,” Angela Ziegler.
We know from Dragons, Recall, Hero, and the Museum Heist that 1) ultimates such as the Dragons and Tactical Visor are canon, 2) Reaper is capable of transforming himself into smoke, 3) Winston’s in-game abilities - including his Rage ultimate - are canon.  At the moment, there is no reason to believe that Mercy’s Resurrection ultimate is not canon.  People will no doubt argue that I’m making a leap of logic here, but until confirmed otherwise, I’d say it’s likely that all Ultimates are canon.
And therefore this means that Mercy knows how to revive the dead.
More than anything, this means that if Mercy is associated with Oasis, that we should be giving a solid, hard look at what exactly this implies for lore.  I’m not saying that Oasis “having Lovecraftian connotations is 100% canon,” but rather it is important to note that the types of references a story builds for itself almost certainly influences the type of story it wants to portray.  The fact that Mercy has not one, but multiple skins that are related to “raising the dead in morally-ambiguous ways” is telling.  She has two Valkyrie skins, the Imp and Devil skins, and the Witch skin (which literally carries “a book of life” on her).
Again, I already know these skins aren’t canon.  That’s beside the point.  The point here is that all of this combined creates a very ambiguous tone about Mercy and Oasis - the undercurrents of mistrust, the sensation that “something lurks in the city,” the feeling that “humanity is playing with forces it cannot control,” the idea that “a doctor who defies death” lives and works there, the idea that the “in-game embodiment of Death Himself” is going there to “visit an old friend.”  These are all things that build an eerie sense of foreboding.
Exactly as Lovecraft would have wanted it.
Lovecraft’s Nameless City builds the groundwork “lore” for his Cthulhu mythology.  The “nameless city” is a city in the Arabian desert, older than Babylon, implied to have been “lost” to the ages as humanity began to conquer the earth.  The ancient race that built the city retreated underground, where they continued their worship of the Great Old Ones.  The human protagonist of The Nameless City wanders deeper and deeper until he is beset by the presence of the ancient race and some form of the Great Old Ones, ostensibly for “intruding on a realm he had no right to access.”
Sorry for the long quote, but I was ecstatic to see Zenyatta get a Cthulhu-based skin this Halloween, because directly after this Oasis part, I talk about Zenyatta and his connections to “the unknowable.”
What the Overwatch team is building here is a series of “range of canon” background mythologies (some that are “non-canon but merely background white noise that colors how the players view the world,” to “these are kinda sorta canon and you should be paying attention to how we use these references,” to “these are outright canon and we will be using them blatantly for whatever we want”) that develop the world in a set of unique ways.  Even for the stuff that “isn’t canon,” it still exists in the game and it still tints how players interact with the characters, their personalities, and their story arcs.  Reaper’s Mariachi skins and Zenyatta’s Djinn skins may never matter “in the overall story,” but they still show small “slices” of personality that reveal something new about them.  Similarly, Zenyatta’s lines about his discord orb may never “make it to canon,” but they still demonstrate that “something dark” lurks within them.
And this is, arguably, both the strength and weakness of this style of storytelling: anything and everything is open and available for use.  You can design a world where a map references the Tower of Babel and more or less imply that “the doctor who defies death” lives there, but you can change this at the drop of a hat.  You can create a robot monk whose abilities rely on amplifying “the disquiet” in other characters’ souls, but then say that his statements on these abilities are not “canon.” You can craft a narrative surrounding three old comrades who have had a major falling out and then leave massive gaps in the explanation for this problem.  You gain freedom, flexibility, and openness in exchange for lore that stands on a foundation as steady as shifting sands.
It is almost undeniable that Moira fulfills nearly every aspect of these two fan theories: the first of “Evil Mercy” and the idea of her involvement with Reaper’s condition, and the second of “something dark lurks in Oasis.”
Moira is exactly what fans have been asking for -
With all the pros and the cons related to that.
---
In between the first postings of the “Evil Mercy” theory (and Michael Chu’s very soft denial of them) in the Summer of 2016, and the release of Oasis on the PTR in December 2016, a seemingly unrelated fandom event occurred. The large comic book “First Strike,” which was meant to detail the origins of the original Strike Team and their battles in the Omnic Crisis, was canceled.
The original post is, unfortunately, gone now, but bless reddit for having some of the best bots ever:
Tumblr media
(https://www.reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/5do14r/first_strike_graphic_novel_update_canceled_via/da5z4mb/)
“While we are grateful to the team for the fantastic work they put into it, we’ve ultimately decided to take the story in a different direction.”
And
“In the years since First Strike’s conception, we have done a lot of development on the universe and its sotires.  While the core of this story remains, we have changed and expanded upon how we see the events that took place during the first days of Overwatch.” - Michael Chu
Several months later, in May 2017, Jeff Kaplan expanded on that in a Polygon interview:
“We sort of saw Overwatch really open up to the world, and listening to players and the stories they were telling and what they imagined the Omnic crisis to be really made us second guess what we were doing in First Strike,” said Kaplan. “We thought, ‘Hey, if we go down this path, it really closes all these doors.’”
Fan theories about the Overwatch cast’s pasts abound, and players produce fiction, art and other original content in droves. Although animated shorts and digital comics have had success in filling out the game’s universe — particularly the most recent comics, “Uprising” and “Reflections” — the Overwatch team found that a 100-page graphic novel no longer made sense as supplemental reading material, six months into the game’s life.
“Part of the magic is that everything is not tied off and explained to players,” Kaplan said of keeping Overwatch’s canon less defined. “There’s a lot going on in Overwatch right now where I think that the story in players’ heads is often even cooler than what we can deliver to them.”
(https://www.polygon.com/2017/5/17/15655410/overwatch-first-strike-canceled-jeff-kaplan-interview)
Many fans were bitterly (and rightfully) disappointed at the cancellation - the Omnic Crisis is one of the most speculated and discussed concepts from the Overwatch universe, along with the five main heroes (Gabriel Reyes, Jack Morrison, Ana Amari, Reinhardt Wilhelm, and Torbjörn Lindholm) that it involved.
However, the cancellation was quickly followed by a new wave of creator-fan controversy when a fan asked Michael Chu on his twitter if the word “decades” in Reaper’s hero profile was, in fact, accurate or a typo.
You can find the whole exchange here:
https://twitter.com/to_grok/status/826487157430874112
User:  Thank you for responding. But does that mean Reyes has been Reaper before Overwatch fell?
Michael: I'll let you draw your own conclusions, but the wording on Reaper's bio is intentional.
The response sparked a massive wave of renewed discussions on the ways heroes and villains are written and portrayed, both in Overwatch and larger media (a discussion I was a part of).  People were (rightfully) furious with the implication that Gabriel Reyes - a hero in the Omnic Crisis - had actually been undermining his own organization for “decades” under an alias, or that he had been suffering from wraith-like powers and pain for nearly thirty years without any of his friends and allies noticing.  Once the fury cooled down, some people began to toy more with the idea, and the concept that “something had been off with Gabriel” since his involvement in the Soldier Enhancement Program grew quietly among fans.
What was also slowly realized in between the two “controversies” was that there was the increasing likelihood that the “different direction” Michael had originally mentioned in regards to cancelling “First Strike” was actually probably specifically in regards to Gabriel Reyes/Reaper and his eventual role as an antagonistic character in the present storyline of Overwatch.  Despite being “villainous,” Reaper is one of the most popular and immediately recognizable characters in the Overwatch cast, and has led to the creation of hundreds of thousands of fanart, fan stories, comics, memes, jokes, videos, posts, discussions, and ideas.  Previews of the “First Strike” comic had Gabriel Reyes cast in heavy shadows, looking rather omnious compared to the other characters, and it also showed him in his Blackwatch uniform, a division which hadn’t actually been made yet.
In his late February-early March GDC talk, Michael Chu went on to say this quote about the “villains” of Overwatch:
“What’s important to us is that their motivations are not purely rooted in being evil, despite how they might seem on the surface.  As we reveal more about these characters, we want people to be able to empathize and understand their beliefs.  Because sometimes what makes a villain a villain is the extent to which they’re willing to go to reach their goals.  And one thing that we find most important when we’re talking about our villain characters is that there is nothing to say that a villain cannot be as charismatic or more charismatic or as likeable as a hero character - because, like the old saying goes, ‘every villain is the hero of their own story.’”
The picture during the presentation was of Junkrat and Roadhog, but it was very clear that all of the Overwatch “villains” were a part of this category: Widowmaker, Sombra, and yes, Reaper.
Moira, without a doubt, fits into this category as well, but more than that -
Moira very likely represents some of that “different direction” the Overwatch development team decided on between the game’s release in May 2016 and the cancellation of “First Strike” in November 2016
Especially in regards to Gabriel Reyes/Reaper.
In fact, along with the quotes by Arnold and Geoff listed at the beginning of the post -
I think it’s highly likely that Moira was created as a direct response to everything that has happened between the game’s release and now.
Moira may be the first true “fan-feedback” character created on the Overwatch roster.
The other four characters that have been released since launch - Ana, Sombra, Orisa, and Doomfist - where all largely conceptualized before the game came out, but were staggered for release over the course of a year.  While many fans thought they had input on Sombra and Doomfist in particular, it became very clear that, once the two heroes were released, they were drastically different than what anyone expected or predicted.
Moira, on the other hand, covers several things fans have been asking for since at least June 2016: the “evil Mercy”/“evil healer” with a lifeleech ability, a lore connection to the sinister parts of Oasis, a Talon “support” character with moral ambiguity, and a “different direction” that permits the Overwatch developers to possibly give more freedom of morality and a wider ranger of plot backgrounds for other popular characters - chiefly Gabriel Reyes/Reaper, but also Jack Morrison/Soldier: 76, Angela Ziegler/Mercy, Sombra, Genji Shimada, Jesse McCree, Amélie Lacroix/Widowmaker, Akande Ogundimu/Doomfist, etc.
However, she also constricts certain “plot ranges”/“plot twists” now - the revelation by Nesskain that Gabriel Reyes was “scared” over his enhancement or shift into “Reaper” is both surprising and enlightening.
Tumblr media
(oh look, a Blackwatch version of the Valkyrie suit.)
Tumblr media
https://twitter.com/nesskain/status/926674887615188992
Now, it’s entirely possible that Nesskain’s comment means very little to the developers, but he did also write that he is permitted to know the “People of interest. And a bit of story” when commissioned to make official art for Overwatch.
Which more likely means he was given the direction to make Gabriel look “scared” during his transformation process.
This immediately relieves some of the pressure that Gabriel Reyes chose to become Reaper, but it now puts the onus on Moira instead, and her decision to possibly experiment on him against his will (or in ways he did not agree to).
To summarize, the timeline of post-game-release events looks like:
June 2016: Major posts on "evil Mercy" start going viral.
July 2016: Michael Chu denies the interactions between Mercy and Reaper exist.
November 2016: First Strike is cancelled.
November 2016: the first few posts on "we need an evil healer in the game" start appearing.
December 2016: Oasis is released on the PTR - Hammeh releases his first video speculating that "someone with darker science" is at Oasis and/or Mercy is at Oasis.
January 2017: Oasis is playable on live servers.
early February 2017: Michael stands by his statement that "the wording on Reaper's bio is intentional."
late February 2017: Michael has his GDC talk - discusses unreliable narrators and “villains” being heroes of their own stories.
April 2017: Uprising is released showing Gabriel Reyes in a more humorous, lighthearted manner.
July 2017: Doomfist is released, revealing more aspects of Talon.  Moira is pictured for the first time.
November 2017: Moira is revealed.
---
What this all culminates in is a rather interesting mystery that connects several dots that people have speculated and discussed for quite some time.  Most surprisingly, the Overwatch developers actually decided to stick to their guns and put in some very intriguing tidbits that point to a combination of both “reworking” Gabriel Reyes/Reaper’s entire storyline and still “retaining” several details, while still meshing with fan desires and fan theories for a new healer.
Moira’s background and her current “plot” are almost perfectly designed to sell a brand new, well, direction for several aspects of the larger story.
It requires several steps to put it all together.
Step 1. Moira in Oasis
Tumblr media
“Currently, in addition to her duties as a scientist for Talon, Moira was also invited by the Ministers of Oasis to become their Minister of Genetics, and so she is basically leading up their genetic research at the city - and this [referring to her Oasis skin] is what she’d wear when she’s over there.” - Michael Chu, 11:12 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=672)
Tumblr media
Cool.  So now we have a way to tie Oasis to the larger world of Overwatch (again, kudos to Hammeh for predicting that a character like Moira "without any moral limits” on conducting scientific research would come along), as well as expand on the shady and morally ambiguous aspects of the Oasis.
Step 2. Gabriel’s “decades”
Tumblr media
“She was recruited by Gabriel Reyes to be a member of Blackwatch.  And uh, during that time she had relationships with the Blackwatch crew - McCree, Genji - they all have their own sort of likes and dislikes for each other.  Reyes wanted someone could help advise him on, uh, some matters of genetics that he was, uh, interested in, shall we say.” - Michael Chu, 3:47 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=227)
In Moira’s lab of Genetics on the University map, you can find this folder in the spawn room.  It is brand new -
And identical to another “lore detail” found in Dorado.
Tumblr media
People have been attempting to predict Gabriel Reyes’ “SEP ID number” since the concept that “76″ was Jack Morrison’s SEP ID number was first theorized.  Lots of people picked things like 13 (“unlucky”), 666 (“the Devil’s number”), and 75 (“to go along with 76″), etc - these were all fairly common.  This writer picked 127 as a play on a holiday.
What the “Soldier: 24″ folder also seems to imply is that Gabriel has been having issues or side effects from SEP, thus retaining some aspects of his Hero profile saying “decades” on it.
In retrospect -
It’s probably not a coincidence that Michael’s “the wording on Reaper’s bio is intentional” tweet follows the release of the Oasis map onto live servers by like...a month.
It’s also very clear that the Ministry of Genetics was always present on the map, right from the very outset, along with Reaper and Sombra’s interaction about “seeing a friend.”
Sombra: So what are we doing here boss?
Reaper: I need to pay a visit to a friend.
Which certainly played me like a damn clarinet, because man, I fell for it hook-line-and-sinker.
Of course, I was basing my predictions on this next part.
Step 3. “Evil Mercy”
Tumblr media
“So, there is a connection [with Moira], but it’s actually not to Zenyatta, it’s actually more of a connection to Mercy.  Um, you know, they both worked together - obviously, Moira’s a part of Blackwatch, Mercy was a part of Overwatch, but she’s [Moira] has definitely taken and modified some of that tech.  There’s some evidence on the Oasis map that sort of hints at some of that.” - Michael Chu, 3:27 (https://youtu.be/CEQ_qDtyRHA?t=207)
The title of the paper reads “Genetic Conditioning and Regenerative Propertis of Applied Nanobiotics.” - by Dr. Angela Ziegler, MD. Ph. D.
You can also find a copy of Mercy’s research in Moira’s Genetics lab, which is is pretty sneaky way to incorporate the whole “Mercy’s technology failed to resurrect Gabriel” into this whole new storyline.  It’s hard to say if Moira specifically used Mercy’s technology (or a warped verison of it) on Gabriel, or if she’s taken Mercy’s tech and reworked it into her own healing beam, but the wink and nod to fan theories about “Evil Mercy” is pretty ingenius and somewhat sinister, Blizzard.
Step 4. A reason to fight
For a very, very long time, there were only two maps that lacked any clear connection to the overarching plot or lore of Overwatch: Ilios, and Oasis.  Everything else had some sort of story tie-in, either to a major character or a major event.  Sure, many maps lack a specific reason for six people to go brutally fight six other people in a parking lot, like...Hollywood...or Nepal... but they at least had a connection to someone or something.
Up until now, the biggest theory was that - well - Mercy might be chilling there and Reaper might be out hunting for her, but basically overnight that completely changed.
In theory, it would be enough to simply connect the map to Moira and be done with it (much like Nepal is simply connected to Zenyatta), but there’s a unique extra detail in the University map now.
Tumblr media
This is the other spawn room on the Unversity map.  It mirrors Moira’s on the opposite side.
This is the Ministry of Chemistry logo.
Tumblr media
Okay, seems alright, symmetry is important after all.
But there’s...an issue.
Tumblr media
Title: “Repairing Degenerative Genetic Structures” with a large post-it note that says “Draft”
And that -
is the Ministry of Genetics logo
along with the title “Ministry of Genetics” in Arabic.
The “Ministry of Chemistry” spawn room
is this one:
Tumblr media
Hmm.
I suspect Moira does not appreciate her fellow Minister running off with her research on a very...unique “test subject.”
And I also suspect “Soldier: 24″ does not want his secrets getting out.
And -
as the “map” from Necropolis shows us -
Tumblr media
Reaper has to pay a visit to a “friend.”
...Even if she is “the one responsible for this.”
---
And before I get questions about the possibility of a romantic angle between Moira and Reaper, I’m just going to stop everyone right here:
Geoff Goodman: “It [Her Fade ability] has some similarities to Reaper’s wraith form…uh which is…it’s funny how that works out.” Michael Chu: “You know, we obviously - there’s a…there’s a close relationship between Moira and Reyes-slash-Reaper, and I think one of the fun things we were able to do is to sort of hint at some of those things in her, uh, abilities.” Geoff Goodman: “She’s helping Reaper out and is like, ‘You know, I think I could make this better, I have an idea.’” Michael Chu: “Professional relationship.” Geoff Goodman: “Ahaha, yes…good call.” Michael Chu: “You know what I’m talking about.” [Whole panel laughs] - Time: 14:49 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=889)
The tone of the whole exchange makes it very clear that Michael (and Geoff) are emphasizing that the relationship between Reaper and Moira is literally just professional.
And...well...
I also have a username to uphold, so you know my stance on that.
What will be very interesting to see in the near-future are the in-game interactions between Reaper and Moira, as well as Moira and the other Talon members, Moira and the old Blackwatch agents, and Moira and Mercy.  Moira absolutely fulfills Michael’s quote here:
Michael: When we created Moira, we wanted her to have all these connections to characters throughout Overwatch history, through different groups. (Moira Reveal Panel)
And, more importantly -
Michael: Who is Moira?  Well, most importantly, Moira is that new support hero character that you’ve been waiting for! (Moira Reveal Panel)
Moira is probably the first character created almost entirely from fan feedback and fan ideas, with the developers’ twists, after all.
When Geoff Goodman says that she was created “completely from scratch,” what he most likely means is that the Overwatch development team had no concept of her at the time of the game’s release.  She did not come from a scrapped Titan hero.  She did not come from a developer’s concept.  She did not come from another hero’s background.
She likely came from fan reactions to three main things: the request for a “morally ambiguous healer,” a “different direction” from the original background plot, and a way to enhance the underlying sinister and darker elements of Oasis (if it was not created in tangent with her ideation).
...
So, friends -
Be careful what “heroes” you wish for in the future
Tumblr media
Because you might reap your rewards.

memorable things from geekedfest
• cara was happy to know i bought the game after tracer was announced as a lesbian
• in the vip meeting in the morning, there was a really lovely girl who was emotional and very nervous, and talked to cara about how inspirational tracer’s sexuality has been and how strongly it’s affected her and cara seemed really touched, and spoke to her very personally and kindly and made sure she was okay a lot
• cara thinks the representation in overwatch is one of the best aspects of the game, and is very happy there are characters that everyone can seem to relate to
• cara loves emily and thinks they just met by both being in london (and says its not up to her who decides this stuff but is really happy emily exists)
• chloe agrees, and says she adores the community a lot because of how positive and active we are (<3!!)
• if they had to make a new skin for their character, chloé wants an invisible widowmaker skin & cara wants tracer to be a cosplayer and too dress up as batman or something
• chloé has tried to ask people what to do to get involved in how to start playing overwatch because she wants to play her own character, but apparently people have told her she’s going to die LMAO
• cara tried playing tracer at blizzcon in 2016 and was bad apparently
‘i kept going in there, dying, going back in there, dying...’ and then she used the mic to say some tracer lines into the team chat and some dude replied with ‘ooooh fuck’ ahahahah
• on what they think of each other’s characters
cara: ‘i think she’s mighty fine.’
chloé: ‘tracer doesn’t need all of this *makes sensual french noises widow makes in game* to be a badass. (...) i like tracer a lot’ then they smiled at eachother which was cute af
• in regards to widowtracer ship, cara loves it and chloé does too. they said something along the lines of ‘if that’s what people want to ship, then go for it! we have no problem, we think it’s awesome’ which was cool. supergirl is shook.
• if they were to choose their own team comp, chloé and cara both agreed on wanting each other in their teams (<3) along with mercy and lucio, then reinhardt for a tank.
THEN, cara was like ‘we’re missing one’ and some guy shouted ‘HANZO’ and everyone in the crowd was like WTF NOOOO and they all laughed.
then cara said ‘oh that’s a joke isn’t it?? being a HANZO MAIN! you’re a hanzo main!’ dfkjsdfhkdjsf and then they decided the last teammate was to be hanzo because ‘there’s always got to have a hanzo’.
• both thought the alive short was cool as fuck, cara felt like she was in a pixar movie
• someone asked ‘if you were to be an overwatch character, what would your abilities be?’ and they both agreed on
- siamese twins, one british and one french, with a cowboy hat and hacking skills (i might have forgotten something else sorry ladz)
• they both like the character design for mercy and sombra
• they did each other’s voice lines (’cheers love! / ‘one shot, one kill’) and they actually did really good with it LMAO
• caras favourite skins are the summer games one with the british flag & the ultraviolet one / chloé’s is the traditional widowmaker one because ‘it makes sense, because she’s purple. or blue....there’s still a debate about that’
• i told cara about hearing her ‘ha, wanker!’ line in game with the ultraviolet skin and she was amused to know it made the cut. she said that she’d told the VA people that ‘um...you know it’s a swear in english right?’ and did it anyway. she also said she recorded a ‘you tosser!’ voice line which she said to look out for!
• crazyhead fans - no news on season 2 yet. :) also she said she was amused upon reading the script knowing she was gonna have to pee on people. ‘i thought ‘yep. this is different.’’ LOL.
• they both love the fact the VAs hang out in america and wish europle/uk held more cons so they could hang out with each other more.
• both said they were very grateful to have overwatch in their lives and that the biggest impact it’s had on them is the community’s reaction
• ‘i will take selfies for food’ cara to me after i gave her an overwatch cupcake. then chloé was like ‘yup. selfie’
• argued with me about whether i was ginger or not DSFhdsfjkhsd (apparently im not)
• they are both sweethearts and really must be protected and loved at all costs. they were so happy to be there and so inclusive and enthusiastic about the lore and the characters as well as getting to know the fans. they were both really down to earth and kind :)

Overthinking Games: Overwatch: Talon
Haven’t done one of these in a while so I’ll overthink Talon and if calling them a terrorist organization is really fair compared to Overwatch and their actions.
Talon is known as the Terrorist organization and the bad guys of Overwatch’s universe but is that really the case? Overwatch has done a lot to advance and protect the world and their deeds are well known, but as Overwatch fell Talon took control, but lets look at each one of the Talon operatives so far.
Moira is portrayed as “Science gone wrong” but her intentions and interests are obvious from the start. She believes Science should not be limited, that discovery is a must and no sacrifice is too small for the benefit of the future. Morally she is grey, but if she discovers a benefit then it was well worth the risk. She prospered in Oasis because Oasis has similar beliefs, Science should not be limited, but the reason she is seen as evil is because she will take the risk without fear, a complete opposite to Mercy who is a lot less willing to accept risk and who is only interested in the progress of medical study. Look at Mercy, Moira, and Ana as healers, Mercy’s staff only gives benefits as she believes in healing and empowering, Mercy is rather mad about Anas rifle since it took her technology, and it was made to both heal her allys, and to poison her foes, and then there is Moira, because she can absorb the health of others she is able to heal groups of people, this shows their mindsets rather well, Mercy will only heal but has the drawback of having to focus on one ally, there is no risk of hurting anyone, Ana heals people because she failed to protect her comrades, but is also willing to continue taking out targets. She’s a battle Medic. Moira will take the life of a target and spread it amongst her team, her having 2 rapid multi person healing abilities that must be fueled by bringing harm to someone that opposes her. TO her she is doing the most good as the life of her enemy is not wasted and she can help more people at once than Mercy can.
Sombra is shown as a manipulative and aggressive hacker. She is portrayed about not caring much about anything and just doing it because it’s fun, but look at what changed her from a normal girl to the stealth hacker she is. She discovered something and someone shut her down. Sombra is an orphan because of the war, and her video showed she was willing to survive by any means. She was able to get by being a hacker because there was noone else to take care of her, and now she has been shown putting powerful people in line. She wants to see who “really runs the world” she wants to figure out who is in control, and there is a very real chance she wants to expose everything that has corrupted the system. Afterall, she spared the life of a woman getting technology from the enemy, not because she’s sympathetic or nice, but because she would be a powerful ally in getting more information and she knew she had a family. It would have been easy to just let Widow kill her, but Sombra wants more than just destruction, and her personality doesn’t seem like the type trying to get money or jewels because with her skills she could just hack bank accounts. With the kind of knowledge Sombra has gained she can easilly prevent another war by keeping a close eye on the powerful.
Doomfist is a criminal. He is the Scourge, he is a Warmonger, few people in the universe of Overwatch have nothing really nice to say about him, but his story is also about change. If he was never in an accident he may have stayed a normal fighter and never became the Doomfist, but he was and his life was changed. because of the accident he was made more powerful, more agile, more weary of conflict, but he lose what he could have been. He personally learned that when there is a conflict humans have to rapidly change in order to adapt to it. Imagin everything that happened after the first Omnic Crisis. The Moon Colony, Ecopoint, the Australian Fallout, the Transcendence of Omnics, and then suddenly people started getting complacent. They believed Overwatch caused more harm than good and forcefully shut them down and now even as the world falls apart no one is doing anything about it. Doomfist believes the world isn’t suffering enough for people to feel the need to change. he believes that it takes a Major event for the world to come together, like it did during the first Omnic Crisis. If he was a barbarian harming people for fun I would have thought he was a bad guy, but his way of speaking and keeping his calm is very focused. He needs people to suffer in an effective way. Random Chaos will just make people panic, but having a direct enemy that they can not overcome will MAKE them overcome. Having something they can work on to defeat will make them stronger. You don’t lose unless you are complacent and refuse to change.
Reaper is a murderer and a rather hateful person yes, but he has a few reasons to be that way. Remember, Reaper probably can’t see himself as a Terrorist because he is pretty much doing the exact same thing he was when he was in charge of Blackwatch. He has missions and he takes then VERY seriously. In a few ways he’s a better person than Soldier: 76 is because while 76 is going around and beating people within an inch of their lives Reaper has been shown to not take lives that he doesn’t need to. He could have killed Winston plenty of times but settled for trying to dehabilitate him. In Infultration he shot everyone once, only people that attacked him, but one guy ran and fell. It would have been smart to make sure all resistance is dead, or at the very least 100% not a problem, but Reaper held back, which raises the question on if Reaper’s Shotguns are actually lethal. Soldier 76 was shot in the back at point blank and he lived Reaper is a lot more of a covert operator than a vigilante like Soldier whos gun CAN and DOES kill people (Noones living after the Pulse bomb blows up) Reaper’s sense of justice and world order may differ, but they were on a mission to eliminate someone that makes deals with Omnics, and Reaper has always seemed to give people second chances. He was interested in Moira’s work even as she started getting scorned, Genji and McCree were both accepted members of Blackwatch even though Reaper was meant to destroy McCrees gang, and when he is voted Legendary after a match he says “Finally some Recognition” He worked hard to spread peace by doing jobs no one wanted to do, and honestly, as the Reaper he is a lot more able to do his job without worrying about image, something Overwatch was CLEARLY worried about.
Sadly I can’t say much for Widowmaker. If anything Talon is the best she can do after her brainwashing. She is told to kill a target and she does it, happily. It sucks what happened to her, but even with all her talk of joy about killing even she is restrained. She does not waste bullets, she does not kill more than her intended target. She will fight back opposition, mainly Tracer, but she was able to perfectly shoot Mandatta even though it was by shooting threw Tracer. She could have easily shot spectators trying to get Tracer, but she didn’t, only the one resisting her and her target were shot at. She could have also picked off a few enemys for Reaper, but she waited calmly for her target. She’s not a mass murderer, she is a sniper with a cause. There is almost no differance between her purpose and Ana’s purpose.
Talon is constantly called a terrorist organization but look at all of the similarities and differences between  it and Overwatch. While Mercy sounds like she hates healing battle wounds and sometimes sounds like she’s happy soldiers die Moira is happy to rebuild people. While Torbjorn sounds like he HATES Omnics most of Talon don’t seem to mind them at all. While Soldier: 76 went on a Vengence Rampage Reaper is still doing calculated and controlled missions, and while Overwatch potentually forced Reinhardt out because he’s too old I’m sure Doomfist would respect his power and his choice to fight till his dying breath. Both organizations had a goal, both of them are changing the world they believe should be changed, both have passionate allies, it’s just when it comes to Talon vs Overwatch is what is more important, Freedom or Security.

Widow isn't the elektra of overwatch, if anything. I think Widow is more like Neena. Reaper is more like Elektra like being dead and coming back to life. But l agree with mercy being the karen page of overwatch. Junkrat is the danny rand of overwatch and Doomfist is the luke cage of overwatch
absolutely not i am here 2 bestow the overwatch vs comics facts:
doomfist: dr doom. obviously???? doom. bad guys but well put together bad guys who arent even really bad guys they just have an asshole way of going about things. but i would also accept daken bc manipulative assholes. i cant think of a single thing luke has in common w doomfist
genji: psylocke. swords. both used to be hot shit when they were younger. lowkey want to chill and be peaceful but still go out and fight people. also betsy & kwannon’s body vs genji n his robot body
mccree: matt murdock as established. embarrassing and dressing up for no particular reason
pharah: wonder woman. flying n being beautiful. justice.
reaper: look me in the eyes n tell me jason todd doesnt main reaper. yeah elektra died but other than that they have nothing in common. an argument could be made for jean grey because dramatic and dead.
s76: idk someone boring who i dont like
sombra: domino. sneaky and playful but still a solid threat. i can see where ur coming from w neena and widow but other than being from an evil facility with a dead husband..... theres not much. i would also accept catwoman
tracer: stephanie brown maybe. or dick or jason in their robin phases
bastion: captain america because boring and bland but everybody plays or makes movies n shit in steves case, of them because its easy. steve has the personality of a robot that cant talk
hanzo: wolverine because something about redemption blah blah but mostly because theyre both murderers that you’d definitely still bang. also widow/hanzo and logan & elektra r good
junkrat: the fucking joker. me trying to get away from a riptire is the same thing as me trying to get away from the joker in a batman comic. annoying??? never shuts tf up??? ppl are obsessed with them both and im never clear on why???
mei: cassandra cain. cute and not well socialised but Deadly
torbjorn: iron man. armour n mechanics
widow: elektra. im not moving on this. taken by an organisation and used to oppose the dude she loved??? thinks she’s only good for killing??? but iw ould accept psylocke for the sake of widow/sombra and betsy/neena
dva: jubilee. upbeat and small but could kill you.
orisa: maybe luke w him being orisa and danielle being efi. alternately moon girl being efi and devil dinosaur being orisa. gert yorkes being efi and old lace being orisa???? cant decide
reinhardt: OBVIOUSLY luke cage????? resilient??? big??? fatherly????
roadhog: i actually dont know
winston: superman. big n friendly but w a beserk button
zarya: she hulk. i want them both to benchpress me and everything i own
ana: donna troy. team mom
lucio: dazzler or 90s superboy. beyonce with added fighting
mercy: karen because boring and like 1 personality trait. concept mercy however: maybe storm maybe clea
sym: silver sable. hot. mean. dedicated to their Look. unapproachable
zenyatta: danny because while you appreciate his presence you wish he’d shut the fuck up with the profound spiritual advice

After a week of playing Overwatch:
absolutely can’t play Genji, if I get him on mystery hero I usually find the nearest cliff and jump off of it I’m not even kidding
I’m a little better at McCree but I usually just play him to hear Matt Mercer’s voice :’D High Noon only charged for me ONCE and I got so excited that I blew all my load on one dude. Worst porno ever.
Pharah is like, my second main, if there’s a tank already and we need an offense hero I’ll go straight for her. It’s ideal that she does so much splash damage cause her rockets are slöw
Reaper. Miss me with that edgelord.
I know Soldier is supposed to help in transitioning from classic fps to the more complicated and strategy-based OW but listen, I play Gaige on Borderlands 2 and camp out with Deathtrap whenever I can, Soldier isn’t gonna be a good fit for me. I hate his ult also.
I also wish I was better at Sombra but unfortunately she’s too squishy
same with Tracer. I love being annoying and drawing people’s attentions away from my team mates but it’s hard to play her without a mouse so I’ll get back to her when I have one.
Bastion’s cool for defence but very limited unless in sentry mode which I guess is why he’s defence but still.
I’m a bad Hanzo but I enjoy him quite a lot. Not worth it to go up against a Widow with him though.
I hate those asshole Junks that just keep lobbing in grenades from the window and get play of the game. I know the game allows this so it’s not cheating or anything but it’s a bit of a spineless move if you ask me heh.
Mei is great and I love her and I love being a Mei even though it’s a lot of responsibility. I usually train with her against AI but I’m also happy when I get her on MH. People get really angry at her in Quick Play though :[
Torbjörn is cool but I’m very map-specific with him, he’s best on King’s Row ngl, he’s fun, he’s a tiny man.
Because I’m a sniper at heart I feel partial towards Widowmaker and I love playing her but I’m often discouraged because of how mad people get at bad Widows (or bad anyone’s but like, we were on attack the other day and I got yelled at because WIDOW’S SHIT ON ATTACK like chill, I just wanna shoot some fools)
I can’t do shit with D.Va. I played against a great D.Va this morning and I have no idea how they stay alive. Everybody’s shooting me all the time, my matrix lasts only for so long, and I have a damn box of peas I keep throwing at people, I’m very bad at her.
Orisa is my main girl, I gushed about her before and I just have to say she’s the perfect hero for me. I don’t know who I’d be if she wasn’t in the game yet when I joined.
Reinhardt is usually my go-to tank with tight choke point maps but I’m only good with pushing through, I can’t kill for shit with his hammer so I usually swap him out once we got in. I love his HONOR! JUSTICE! REINHARDT-REINHARDT-REINHARDT! voice line though x) Also Sweethardt x)
I thought I was gonna be so good at Roadhog, and I’m not bad but I don’t think he’s a very good tank tbh. If you have to step out to take a breather every ten seconds then you’re not a tank, sorry.
Winston’s crap. Or I’m a crap Winston. His gun don’t do shit and you’d think I’d be good at it since you don’t even have to aim, and I don’t get how his shield works or what it’s even good for when you still get shot through it O-o
Zarya’s nice, I’m getting used to her tbh. I love going up to people in the spawn room and spam the “I will BREAK YOU” voice line x)
Ana is the one healer I’m decent with, tbh, I put three people to sleep at once a few hours ago, it was hilarious.
Lúcio, my love....... I’m so bad at you.
Same with Mercy but I’ll go out of my way to protect Mercy’s and always apologise when I get her or both of us killed.
I’ll master Symmetra one day....... one day......
Zenyatta’s my favourite chill boy but nopppppe, too much to pay attention to, I can’t aim, nope.
Also:
I’ve had exactly ONE conversation with one of my 1v1 partners, everybody else is just fucking quiet AND boring
also I haven’t won a 1v1 before but I’m not even talking while playing, I talk while setting up soooooo what could be the reason? Oh, I’m just bad? Okay........
people who kill you while you’re dancing in skirmish are the worst
I straight up LEAVE whenever someone starts acting like they’re the damn boss while you’re in the spawn room. I get it if you want to discuss strategies but don’t talk to me like I’m a damn idiot.
I like funny people who don’t take it seriously. I like a bit of joking and humour in the chat. Whenever someone’s throwing a tantrum and cursing team mates out I just roll my eyes so hard. Go play comp if you’re so damn serious about it.
gotta break all the pinatas in Dorado, bre-... bREAK THE FUCKING PINATAS, REAPER
nobody cares who you main. If someone else snatched your main and doesn’t want to switch then tough luck, pick another character you dillweed.
some people are Very mean and will yell at me
accidentally coordinating some dumb shenanigans in the spawn room or in skirmish is my favourite :’D
no, I will not put down a shield ten seconds before attack commences cause it will despawn two seconds after attack commences, you just let me handle tanking and you handle hammering your turret
I’m busy killing the sentry Bastion when he’s not looking at me, no I don’t know what you mean when you write “ORISA SHIELD HERE”
watch my damn halt ball maybe? maybe? it makes a noise, it’s really bright, there’s a .second delay when it blows up, that’s where you have to shoot, that’s... that’s the point......
I denied three ults within five seconds, why is Mei’s two headshots the POTG and not my stroke of brilliance?
going against an enemy Orisa is hardcore af but I win always. unless the enemy has two Orisa’s cause then I win never
:[
[yahtzee voice] Overwatch is a good game

Saving Faith
Chapter 1: Lost and Found
Chapter 2: Last Few Words
Chapter 3: Keeping Secrets
Chapter 4: A Fresh Start?
Chapter 5: Saving Faith
“Honestly though, do frogs even have feelings? They just sit there!” Tracer exclaimed. She always had something to talk about and always seemed to get a good laugh out of everyone. Especially D.va, who was currently in tears.
“My god Tracer,” she said snorting in hysterics.
“That was the funniest thing you’ve said yet!” Winston bellowed.
It was then the group noticed someone walk back into the room.
“Hey guys, did I miss any thing...” Soldier said scanning the room as he sat down in his seat once more. It quickly became so quiet that one could hear a pin drop. Everyone held a face of astonishment, his obliviousness shocked them. When he couldn't find Mercy’s lovely face anywhere, he started to panic, “where did...”
The room remained silent, but not for long.
“FUCK! That BASTARD!” Soldier roared as he shot up from the chair, letting it fall to the ground behind him. Everyone sitting at the table jumped in their seats, causing them to look at one another in confusion. Without giving his friends a chance to ask what was wrong, Soldier fled the scene and to his room in hopes of finding Mercy. It took the group a couple seconds to respond to his actions before anything was said or done.
“Tracer, follow him,” Zarya said jumping from her seat, “we won't be too far behind.”
“On it!” She shouted as she zipped out of the room. The rest of the team was in her wake as they all ran after Soldier.
He was the first one to make it to the scene.
Blood was splattered on the ground. Her body was hunched over in a painful manner. The masked villain stood next to her proudly. A deep chuckle protruding from his body. Soldier growled and ran towards them.
“Reaper!”
“Nice try Morrison, better luck next time,” he said before the two of them vanished.
Soldier was seething with rage and pounded the wall next to him, putting a nice hole in the wall. He yelled out violently and sank to the floor in pain. He couldn't lose her, not again.
“M-Morrision? Did I hear him right?” Tracer asked as she looked around the room at her friends.
“Yes...” Soldier huffed as he stood from the ground. He proceeded to take his mask off seeing as his cover was already blown and there would be no sense in saving it now. He then slowly turned and faced his small group of friends. Gasps were heard among them in happiness, rage and fear.
“It’s me guys, and I’m sorry I kept it a secret for so long,” he paused, “and I know there are a lot of questions, but, I think there is something more important on our hands,” he ordered as his mask hissed back into place.
The pain in her side was too much to bare. Her world spun in circles and the blur in her vision didn't seem to help with her conditions. The deeper she breathed, the more pain she would be submerged in. What even happened to her? What was going on? As her vision began to clear, she could make out the white walls around her along with a dozen flashing colors.
Blinking her eyes furiously, she then noticed the person standing right in front of her.
“Well it’s about time,” she spoke in a heavy Mexican accent.
“Who... Who are you?” Mercy managed to whisper out.
“That is none of your concern blondie.” The term she used made her skin burn. There’s never been a word she hated more than blondie. She huffed beneath her breath.
“Leave the girl alone Sombra,” a woman with a heavy native accent said as she moved towards them. The closer she got to them, the more Mercy seemed to recognize her.
Amelie?
“Aww come on, she just got here, how could I not mess with her?”
Widowmaker rolled her eyes as she knelt down in front of Mercy.
“What a familiar pair of eyes,” she sang as she gripped her chin in between her fingers, “shame it won't be of use anymore when the time comes.” She examined her face before she tisked at her and let her go, “besides, you never got anywhere you needed to be in time.”
Mercy panted from the pain. She wasn't lying. This might just be the place where she takes her last breath. She looked down at the wound in her abdomen. It looked bad. In fact, almost infected. This would be a tough one to deal with when she got back to the base.
“Come on Sombra, let us leave her be.” Widow said as she dragged the woman out with her. Mercy let out a breath. She knew that help would be on the way soon, she just didn't know when. Given that the pain wouldn't be getting any better, she decided that she mine as well give the small room a look.
The walls were uninviting and the draft the wind created didn't seem to help. The paint was visibly peeling off the wall and the stench that came from an unknown substance made her want to vomit. An old clearly used cot in the corner of the room sagged from the weight of the world that had once laid upon it. A small rickety chair was toppled over in the opposite corner, groaning from the mold eating at its legs.
Was this really Talon’s head base? Old and destroyed from the years of life? Or was the organization just in really bad shape. She couldn't tell, nor did she really care. With all the effort she could give, she hobbled over to the stool. She needed something to help her with her wound and the stool just might be the solution. The blood was still making little droplets from the soaked cloth she held against her body. If she could just stop the bleeding, everything would be ok, only she knew that it was more than just a small stab wound. She probably had a good amount of internal damage too.
Oh god, how did she even get herself into this situation? Her thoughts were endless as she sat on top of the stool. Just stop the bleeding, she kept reminding herself. Everything will be ok once Jack gets here.
But Jack....
What if it was reaper all along? And this was his devious plan to capture and kill her? She didn't really blame him. After all, what enemy would want the head medic of the other team alive? Her shoulders sagged as her mind raced on. What if the team calls her crazy for really believing that this random so called Soldier 76 was a good guy? Would they ever trust her again? What if they’re already out and doing the damage to Overwatch? How foolish of her to lead them all to danger. It was all of her fault.
And now she was going to die here, alone.
No one was coming for her and she could feel it. A single tear escaped her eye and her heart began to pound, a sign she was about to cry. First her parents, then the love of her life, and now her? Was god out to get her? What had she ever done to deserve such a fate.
And then it began.
The sobbing.
In the span of her regretting almost every life decision she had ever made, the tears flowed freely. She didn't hold back. Was this what it felt like to all of the soldiers that were brutally murdered? Was this what happened when she didn't get to people in time? She soon became furious with herself and the thought of dying never sounded more pleasing. She really did deserve this. I should thank reaper for this. She thought.
~~~~~
The more hours that flew by, the more tired Mercy grew. She had lost a great deal of blood and the unconscious beast was ready to take her down. Only before she could truly slip into a quiet bliss, the door to the room swung open. With barely enough strength to lift her head, she could only guess who had opened the door to the room.
“Mercy Mercy Mercy, what a time to be alive hu?”
All she could response with was letting her head bob up and down to the beat of her slowing heart.
“You know, they say that Karma is a dish best served cold, let’s see if I can make it freezing for you my dear,” he circled around his prey, “there’s just something about you and time my love, it always seems to hate you,” pause, “you were too late for me, too late for Amelie, and certainly too late for Jack. But lucky for him, he didn't need your help. Managed to make it out on his own. That fool. He was meant to die in that rubble alone. He was never worth your time, and you should’ve never been worth mine.” He scowled as he paced back and forth. His heavy combat boots slapping the ground with every step he took.
From the slight appearance she could see from looking up, she could tell that he too had changed. There was no more kind hearted Gabriel left in his body. She had truly destroyed him. His long trench coat seemed more intimidating than it should be along with his long skeletal mask that was probably used to hide the remains of his face.
“What do you want from me,” she managed to whisper out. With a fluid movement over to her he answered, “I want them to suffer.”
She looked up at him with her blue angelic orbs along with her shaking body. She had lost the sensation in her hands and toes a long time ago, making them turn a deep purple color, much like Amelie’s skin. He seemed to notice all the things going on in her body, making him smile demonically. Of course, she couldn't see it, but it was well worth the try.
“I want them to suffer for the decisions that they made, I want them to suffer the losses I’ve suffered, I want Overwatch to go down in flames. Maybe then the government will realize their mistake in placing commanders.
You know Mercy, or should I say, Angela? You know what? He ruined my life, and you go on and decided to help him with that. Do you know how much you meant to me? How much I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you? Of course you don't. You don't give a damn about poor ol’ Reaper.” He scoffed and walked around the room some more.
“So when are you going to let me die?”
“When Jack Morrison can watch the life drain from your eyes.”
The flight over to Talon’s head quarters was quiet, too quiet.
“We should be arriving soon Soldier.” Winston announced. Even thought the messages was directed towards him, the rest of the group lifted their head up in response as well.
“Good,” he sighed, “Oh Mercy, I’m so sorry I didn’t do more.” He mumbled to him self.
No one dared to speak a word. It was bad enough that their beloved doctor was taken from them, and only two seconds later it’s revealed that their Strike Commander is actually alive. The news was still a shock to them all.
“10 miles in closing,” Winston announced once more. Soldier turned to the group he once called friends. Now he was unsure of what to call them all.
“Friends, acquaintances, my lost family,” no one dared to look at him. He hung his head and sighed, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry for all the pain I may have caused you guys over the years. I didn't mean anything to be personal. I just wanted an exit, and out, and end. I needed to stop tearing down Overwatch. I couldn't bring myself to go back to the life I was living, I couldn't keep putting you guys in danger. It was too much for me, and for that I admit that I am weak. I’ve let you guys down. And I hope you can forgive me.”
There was a deafening silence in the air as the team thought about what their Vigilante had just said. It made sense to most of them and the guilt started to eat away at them. Only then did they realize how much weight he had actually pulled during his time of being Strike Commander. The stress and the emotions he must’ve had were enormous. They alone couldn't deal with that much stress even if the job was divided amongst the group.
They suddenly came to their senses and forgave their lost bother.
“Why did you come back?” Dva piped up.
“Well,” he began as he ran his hand through his worn silvery hair, “I heard that the members of Overwatch had gotten back together. It was maybe a couple months ago that I figured out that Angela was back on the team. I,” he paused, knowing that they had the right to know about their secret love affair, “I needed to come back to make sure that Angela was ok, I wanted to see how she was doing. I missed her, boy did I miss her. I know I caused her a lot of pain by making the choices that I did and I just needed to know.”
They all nodded their heads in understanding.
“You know she never stopped talking about you. How much she missed you, how much she wished she had come sooner. You were all she ever talked about.”
He smiled under his mask, hoping that she didn't cause them too much trouble.
“But she was utterly depressed for a time,” Zarya declared, “her first couple months back, all she would do was break down crying because she wasn't good enough. If she couldn’t save the Strike Commander, what was the point of her being back on the team? Oh she questioned herself day in and day out.”
The group nodded.
“We’re glad you're back Jack, couldn't be happier,” Mcree voiced, tipping his hat.
“Yeah,” Jack sighed, “me too.”
Reaper wasn't lying when he said that she would be hidden by the blackness of his soul. Not long after their little chat, Reaper hauled Mercy out to the main body of the building. It was a wide open area where many different trinkets were being builded, a perfect place for a battle.
“I can feel his presence,” he chuckled as he waited up in the rafters with Mercy, “and soon he will be mine to torture.”
Her heart ached. After all he had been through, this would be one of the last things she wanted him to go through. What had she done? She was literally tearing the new born team apart. It was going to be all of her fault if she made it out of this dilemma alive.
Her heart beat was even slower than before when she watched them enter the building. First she spotted Tracer, then Soldier and the rest of the team.
“She could be anywhere,” she exclaimed as she zipped around the large room.
“She’s got to be here somewhere.” Soldier huffed as he held his pulse riffle. The entire team scanned the area and as expected, came up with nothing.
Mercy was literally counting down the seconds as she saw Widow get in her position in the rafters below them. Her aim was impeccable and her strength was unreal. No wonder why Talon had such a high kill rate. But the fact that she was a good assassin meant nothing to anyone if they were all dead in the end.
Sombra too was in position. With her little teleporter in position, she would have a good shot or two in the ambush. The team itself didn't even know of the new member they had added so diligently.
Everyone would die today.
And it would be all of her fault.
There would be absolutely no more good in the world.
“Wait,” Soldier commanded. He slowly lifted his hand and his head as he looked up into the rafters above him. In the dimness of the darkness and the help of his visor, he spotted her.
CRACK!
The sound of Soldier’s gun exploding rang in the room.
Fortunate for Widow, he missed her and hit an explosive tank behind her.
Fire infiltrated the oxygen around them, making all of the attackers break out of hiding.
From there the only thing Mercy could hear was screaming and gun shots. She no longer had the strength to open her eyes and watch the horror that occurred beneath her.
Just a little longer... Just a little longer....
She pleaded to herself.
BANG!
The rope holding her high in the rafters above her gave way.
She came crashing down like the fallen angel she was.
This was the end for her.
Ok, Piper is terribly sorry for how shitty this part was but I was kind of sick and tired of looking at this part and I wanted to give Y’all something to read, even if it is the crappiest I’ve written. No I didn’t edit anything because I hate editing aaaaaand this didn't really turn out the way I wanted to.
So.
I will still be up for comments and messages as to making my writing better or what nots and whatevers... um. I guess that’s all?
I don't know when the last part will be out and in the mean time I will probably be regretting posting this since it is not in the best of my ability.
Anyways.
This was the closest fit I could get for a song? If you guys don't like me posting these things someone take one for the team and let me know. (I don't bite.... hard..)
youtube
Enjoy. I should be around.
Overwatch saga 1: Downfall of Order
This is some sort of fic idea I have been having on mind. It’s only a draft, but perhaps I could share this to you guys. This is what I think how the story of Overwatch go. Click Read more to see the details.
Sneak preview main highlight: VISHKAR GETS BLOWN TO BITS!
After Recall, only Tracer, Genji, Mei and Mercy answered the call of Winston. Others seemed busy for other businesses. They also realized one thing: They lack cash and due to the Petras act, they cannot just appeal to help others without attracting people who will arrest them for illegal. They need a smaller ‘stepping stone’ to help others. There’s only one destination they can take... to Brazil, enlisting the aid of Lucio.
But when they arrive at Brazil, Lucio’s home was being attacked by Vishkar under Symmetra. The usual fight, like usual. Since the target was Lucio, Overwatch obviously defended him. With her mission to arrest Lucio compromised, Symmetra retreated a bit.
While Winston took care of the dealings with Lucio, the team spread out to look around at the favela. Tracer and Mei ended up meeting with the girl Symmetra saved in A Better World, Rosa, who told them about how she was saved by a Vishkarian woman (Symmetra), which Tracer confirmed that it’s the same woman she fought just before.
In another way, Genji and Mercy surveyed the surrounding of Rio favella, noticing the people’s suffering. However, they met up a ruckus where Symmetra was just trying to return a lost boy under attack by certain ‘black figures’, but only to be harrassed by the locals because the Vishkar reputation was severe. Genji ended up breaking the fight and scared the people with his Dragonblade where Mercy patched up Symmetra’s wounds. The three talked about their philosophies and they realized that Symmetra has honor in her, much similar to Genji’s brother Hanzo. He urged her to at least follow her heart, not just Vishkar’s order, but her own order, then decide for herself. After they left, Symmetra was called in by her superiors to return to Vishkar main HQ.
Once all four returned, Winston told them that he managed to tell most of the things to Lucio, but he felt a little too duty-bound to Rio. With his position leaked, Vishkar could strike at him any time, considering them heartless oppressive monsters. However, once the Overwatch filed in their what they have learned so far, Lucio started to waver, perhaps he made a mistake of generalizing people so far... He then said he needed time to think about this, and the Overwatch decided to stay with him.
Several days later, Rosa told him that there’s another problem. Her father seems to be preparing for an assault or something.
The Overwatch is then introduced to the Liberators, a group of freedom fighters inspired by Lucio’s rebellion. And for the longest time, they have been doing sabotages to Vishkar in order to make the world a better place... which somehow Mercy doubts that they’re doing it right. Lucio claims they’re a faction different than him, he just minds his own business as an international DJ. The Liberators seems to be preparing for a mass journey or sorts... but there were weapons. And when Winston took a look around, he was shocked.
The weapons of the Liberators are similar to those from Talon. He knew, he fought those Talon soldiers when they attempted to delete the Overwatch data. Knowing that this would mean bad news, Lucio attempted to dissuade the Liberators to forget this assault. However, their minds will not waver: They hated Vishkar so much that they would prefer Talon over it, but deny that this operation was backed by Talon. Distressed that his people was carried over with such manipulation, Lucio requested that the Overwatch lend him a hand, and they happily accepted.
Their mission: Prevent casualties of the Brazilians.
Meanwhile, back in the HQ of Vishkar at Utopaea, the company was thrown into chaos when there were several leaks coming from an unknown source, revealing to many Vishkar workers that they have been living a lie, their greater good were used for nothing but filling the pocket of the CEO with money and overall they made people suffer. With their mentalities completely swayed, the majority of Vishkar branches started to lose morale, as many common people throughout the world saw the leak and in turn rebelled against Vishkar’s branches, with the workers somehow unable to do anything. It seemed that the Vishkar technology to motivate the workers malfunctioned at the wrongest time.
Symmetra nearly fell into this demotivator, but due to the way she thinks and how she has been advised by both Genji and Mercy, she managed to keep herself together. The Liberators eventually arrive and the Vishkar people stood in defense, but the Liberators overwhelm them due to the ensuing chaos. Thankfully, the Overwatch arrive in time... and suddenly took on the side of Vishkar, if only that it would prevent the Liberators to shed more unnecessary blood.
And to their surprise, the building security became compromised and Talon mercenaries swarm the building, just as Winston suspected, this was all Talon’s plan. Symmetra suspected that they will be aiming for the CEO of Vishkar next, so took the Overwatch and Lucio to meet up with the CEO.
In there, the CEO just berated Symmetra to arrest the vigilantes (putting them on restrain), once the mess is cleared up they could be executed for going against order. Symmetra refused, they still saved a few Vishkar workers despite their ‘illegal’ status, and besides, the Talon presents a bigger threat at the moment. The CEO knew what to do, so he pressed a button that blew a lot of the portions of the HQ, killing not just Talon soldiers, but also Vishkar members, horrifying Symmetra since this is also what they were doing to her in Rio. The CEO believed that as long as he has her, this can be rebuilt in a short time, and then fortune will come to them again. This confirms to Lucio that Vishkar was solely out for money and its workers are all manipulated by one man. The CEO then started berating that Symmetra dared to go against his orders after he raised her, gave her luxurious life and purpose, and even had to silence her parents just so she would be dependant -- ooops...
That was the last straw for Symmetra. Thoroughly convinced that she was utterly betrayed and made her life turned into a lie, she started beating down the non-combative CEO. But... at the last moment, Lucio pushed her away and a gunshot was heard.
The Vishkar CEO was heavily bleeding, but alive. A bullet was lodged into his chest. It turned out to be a sniper bullet, and eventually, the three Talon agents overseeing this mission; Reaper, Widowmaker and Sombra; arrive to the room. Reaper then told the CEO of Vishkar that everything is according to plan: The big vestige of order of the world revealed to be a complete sham, and the majority of its manpower lost their ways they became easy recruits for Talon, that was the reason Sombra hacked and leaked the information about the true nature of Vishkar. When the CEO reneged that they had a deal, Reaper simply said that the deal expired, then shot him point blank on the face. He told the Overwatch that this is only the beginning, though he would’ve appreciated if a certain soldier was amongst them. Then all three retreated.
When the dusts cleared, Symmetra was distraught, everything she believed was a lie and she instead worked for vice instead of the greater good that she thought. She thought she was beyond redemption for this, but Lucio instead encouraged her that she deserved a second chance. Besides, their efforts managed to save a good number of the Liberators and the Vishkar workers that she protected. Lucio then tells the Liberators to be more careful about how they fight for freedom instead of being easily manipulated like that. Symmetra also told the Vishkar workers that even if they have been misled before, it’s not too late to restart and atone to create the true better world. Humbled, both the Liberators and Vishkar remnants embraced and forgive each other.
As they returned to Rio where the Vishkar remnants are accepted as neighbors and help out with improving the lives in Rio... the good way (by being good people so far), Lucio finally came to his answer: He wants to join Overwatch for good, after seeing the threat of Talon, he knows he can’t just sit idly and focus on just his home, the world needs his help. And as her way to atone for her sins, Symmetra also offers to sign up. Winston agreed to the deals and while the chaos will rise due to the fall of Vishkar, they will have to be more vigilant than ever, but they will also let some people there recover if they have trauma.
And it was just shortly after that they received a mail from South Korea...
Meanwhile, Reaper rounded up the disillusioned Vishkar workers to be brainwashed en-masse into Talon soldiers, similar to Widowmaker... something that triggered something within her...
Thus ends arc 1. Arc 2 will involve gaining new ‘more public fame’ by fighting Giant Omnics threatening South Korea and Russia... but will eventually shift into two ex-Junkers from Australia (also one failed freedom fighter) and a shadow from Genji’s past.
