Fandom Mischaracterizations

Jianhuren: Misgendered despite using they/them because of their more "stereotypically" gendered appearances. Only fanart ever drawn is of their masculine form, new people to the fandom are very surprised to learn they have a feminine form at all despite each form getting equal screentime in media. Any trauma and issues related to their histories and actions with their students is ignored in favor of relegating them solely to the wise old mentor archetype. Received some unfortunate characterizations based on Qingshan’s one-sided unrequited crush on them despite them being completely unaware of it and not at all involved.

Qingshan: Completely ignores any scrap of ace-coding she has. Headcanons her as everything else under the sun BUT ace. Also her muscles are gone. For some reason included as a villain in the same exact ranks of actual innocent-slaughterers and world-enders. "Love can fix her!"

Huaxiu: Flattens all of his negative traits for the sole purpose of making him a more ideal partner to “save” them/their ocs/other character in said media they ship Huaxiu with/whoever/etc. Gets mad when said negative traits appear in the canon media. Ignores the trauma-based nuance behind Huaxiu’s preference of masculine partners over the years vs feminine and you bet it will not be engaged with at all in fanon. Fandom is likely too busy focusing on whatever ship wars he’s in. “Love can fix him.” Ignores Minglian. Even worse, treats Minglian as an obstacle in the way of any ships despite the fact that she’s not a romantic interest at all and is Just There.

Meihui: She loves teasing people so that would be kicked up about 20 notches. Always asking Xiaodan for tips and help with her swordplay despite her being older, more experienced, and way more skilled at it than him. Only ever makes an appearance in fan material to prop up Xiaodan's own strength and skills.

Xiaodan: Because he has a resting face, not even a resting bitch face but just a resting face, his only fanon portrayal is “angery.” Ramps up his fondness of sweets to his only other defining trait. Sex god daddy…somehow, despite having been an uninterested virgin thus far in the series.

Minglian: There are no fanon interpretations of Minglian because she is treated solely as Huaxiu’s accessory at best and completely ignored at worst. If she got any, then she’s infantilized out the wazoo. Precious baby can’t do a single thing without her teacher, never says a word against him, and does not act any way of her own volition. Needs to be protected from anything and naïve to the point of being a pushover unable to live and function without assistance. Gets called the dreaded M*** S**

Zhifeng: Woobifies them into only a doe-eyed, sweet being despite them genuinely and explicitly having a foul personality when they're not playing polite. Wife-ification, ignoring said sour traits and softening them into a stereotypically, traditionally feminine, traditionally "wife" role even though it is wildly ooc and then declares that characterization as canon. Zhifeng: *dresses in gnc ways, actively makes it known they're genderfluid, never uses just masculine pronouns, 'I am not a man'* The fandom: What a handsome pretty-boy, I'm going to only call you "he" and constantly use only masculine-gendered terms like boy and man to refer to you, my beautiful little cis male <3. Also sex doll-ifies them despite any and all sexual aspects of their character being explicitly a survival method and not something they engaged with because they genuinely wanted to. Who cares, they're obsessed with sex now!

And last but not least (unless I've forgotten someone important) is Qingshan for @soulsxng! I've been writing Qingshan for so long and I've still yet to figure out what's up with her romantically. I'm just not sure. After things went down with Jianhuren, she got that crush "out of her system" even if it may still be reflected in her preferences. But I'm still in the dark when it comes to her!

Jianhuren, in actuality, is not very good at asking for help. Since they’re so used to being the eldest of the dragons and the one that others come to for help, they developed a habit of keeping any negativity to themselves. Especially after the ordeal with Qingshan, which actually causes them a great amount of pain and distress.

Jianhuren is not a good cook at all. Not for lack of skill or patience but they tend to space out or get distracted whenever doing so, coupled with the fact that they don’t ever have to cook often to begin with, leads to it being better if they do food prep or cleanup instead. Many a time has something accidentally caught on fire at the oven with Jianhuren right there in the same room

It was Qingshan who introduced Huaxiu to spicier food, she took him out to eat one day and, deciding to mess with her stuffy little student, decided to order the spiciest dish on the menu for him. Needless to say she was surprised when he loved it. 

She can make simple dishes but is by no means extremely skilled, mainly because she didn’t have any interest in cultivating her culinary skill. Also, she was the one mainly putting out the fires in Jianhuren’s kitchen.

Despite all of his talk about how he no longer associates himself with the red eyes anymore and is only willing really to bother with Jianhuren at all, Zhaohui still unintentionally finds himself slipping into that “Us/Them” mentality that the other red eyes are prone to. That is, he tends to default to still considering the red eyes like comrades and others as, well, outsiders to their affairs.

Due to the curse placed on him by the gods for his betrayal, his pain tolerance is astronomically high. And once the curse is removed? Not many wounds would faze him or cause him pause at all.

Huaxiu is by no means a lightweight and can hold his liquor extremely well. One of his favorite pastimes when he was younger was to go to lavish tea houses, listen to the entertainment, order food and wine, and dazzle others with his looks, tolerance, and clearly wealthy disposition. Basically, he was a rich boy who liked indulging himself (maybe it was a byproduct of the years spent training under Qingshan where he lived more simply)

In his library, Huaxiu has countless ancient books and documents that are old enough to be in a museum. Among those, hidden away, are a few certain “books” he obtained when he was younger before he even met Jiao. As time went and he grew older he considered throwing them away, but by that point they were old enough to be considered historical artifacts, and so they remained, although hidden away inside thicker and boring texts so that no one would ever find them. He forgets they’re even there most of the time but would definitely die from embarrassment if anyone ever found them.

In the few instances she’s encountered him, and of course in the future, Meihui calls Huaxiu “gege” but really she doesn’t have to. They’re extremely close in age by dragon standards, with her being 2,000 and Huaxiu 2,500, so he’s not nearly older enough for her to call him that. It’s just a testament to her teasing personality and her messing a bit with how he tends to act.

Meihui and Xiaodan visit Jianhuren for New Years not only because of their fond feelings for the elder of course, but also because even with Qingshan there before, Jianhuren’s other pupil was always noticeably absent and didn’t often come by to visit. They didn’t want Jianhuren to get lonely.

Not every dragon in existence was created by the Dragon God like how all of the red eyes were made by him, Meihui for example wasn’t. But Xiaodan was and it was the Dragon God himself who put the seal on his powers during the time he was searching for Jianhuren. Due to this connection, he’s a little bit more familiar with the deity than any “normal” dragons.

He doesn’t look it at all but he actually has a soft spot for kids! He just doesn’t know how to act around them but he finds them very cute. Of note is in the future when Xianzi comes around, anytime Meihui shows up to help train her guess who just so happens to be there with her? Don’t point it out though or he’ll get huffy.

It may not look it but Vasilios ends up having a hefty influence on Minglian just like Huaxiu. Namely, from him teaching her and showing her how he builds things started a love for creation for her. Afterwards, Minglian will find herself interested in drawing, painting, and playing instruments and shows a talent in all of it too. 

Her favorite flower is the lotus. Not because of her name (Lian 莲 means lotus) but because she became enamored with the lotus flowers that grew in the lake at Huaxiu’s estate.

Bonus third: While at first Huaxiu just handled both of their laundry, eventually after their emotions being returned Minglian asked to be in charge of her own stuff. Huaxiu was a bit confused but agreed, not realizing that it was because the embarrassment and realization hit her all of a sudden that he was handling all of her clothes, underthings included. Huaxiu doesn’t know the reason but if he did he still wouldn’t get it because he was the one who picked out and bought them in the first place, and thus has already seen them.

Who/What inspired my muses

I can’t believe I’m doing this oh it’s going to suck so much

Part 1 because it got long because I’m wordy

Veritas: In high school I was friends with two “the art kids”. I, meanwhile, was the bookworm/writer. We all thought it’d be fun to make a comic, them drawing and me writing the dialogue, so we all said we’d come up with characters from it. Mine ended up being an elf who wore long swishy skirts and fought with dual blades and one of them drew out the design for me. The comic, haha, never got far but when I got interested in doing Tumblr rp I looked at that initial oc idea and reworked it into Veritas. The only real remnants of that origin is, well, elf. And her two swords. But I mean, my interest in fleshing out my brand of elves led to what is what I actually consider a big part of my blog-- my elves. So a lot stemmed from that initial, silly and fun idea between three kids. I’m actually still best friends with one of those girls to this day!

Vendere: My second attempt at making a less morally pure muse after my real second-but-now-removed muse Tamashi ended up nice despite my wishes. I can’t say much of the thought process behind Ven other than his name being a continuation of a Latin theme I had started with Veritas and decided to keep going, which you will continue to see later on too. The only thing I can remember is choosing his name because it was the Latin verb for “to sell”, because info broker, and because I went, “Haha and I can call him V.en like in K.ingdom H.earts.” A lot of big brain ideas going on back when I was sixteen, of which I can’t even make jokes because I’ve done it again with muses fairly recently. In retrospect it makes no sense why his Italian parents would name him that but thus is my 16-year-old-idea oc burden to bear.

Jianhuren: My first muse who I added with the intent to have a bit of a storyline going! I also! Can’t remember why I got the idea for a form shifting person who  was an amnesiac. I’m fairly certain it was an idea that came straight out of my head. At the time, I hadn’t even intended to make a species of dragons, the Red Eyes from them. So it’s kind of why they may seem a bit different in feel or canon or themes or whatever from the other Red Eyes. We were winging it, baby!!

Somnio: Oh my gosh I can’t say I’ll do this and keep saying I don’t remember for these muses! I’m sorrrryyyy these were like a good six or so years ago! I think inspiration. I think maybe the feeling of days and friends gone/soon to be gone from Summertime Record inspired him regarding his feelings towards his dead friend? At the very least, I was listening to that song a lot when I added him and I was definitely thinking of him when I did it. The “Sayonara” part always really stuck out to me.

Amara: Me: What if I did a phoenix. Me: Oh, I see phoenixes in this sense have been pointed at from coming from either or both Greek and Egyptian myth let’s make both of those his background as a fun little easter egg. Me: what if I made a muse so tragic--

Qingshan: Here we see Red Eye lore starting to take more shape! Originally I had just said that Jianhuren was attacked by a monster or something, but I then had a thought of what if it were a betrayal and the monster story is just what was told? A lot of Qingshan’s vibes and the idea to do an evil or “bad” muse came from listening to Sacrifice from Rwby! Since I had just recently gotten into it. And I mean, the music rocks. Wait.....the lyrics never quite fit Qingshan at the time but now I’m realizing they fit Zhaohui well.... hm.

Ren: More desire to expand upon my elf lore that I had started with Veritas. And a desire to touch more on the trafficking issue that elves face. Then I just thought it’d be cool to give a muse the powerset of basically the Avatar-- with setbacks.

Kareena: You know me, I’m always going to look at a predominantly white-assumed category and go, “how can I make this more Brown(tm)? Elves are always so stereotypically white in the media I saw, and I’ve always had a desire to see myself represented in fantasy genres I love so much. Veritas was actually supposed to be brown, but she was my first oc and I couldn’t find a fc that fit what I imagined for her and had brown skin, I just changed it to match her fc. Now, I clearly don’t care, haha. Anyways, Kareena was me wanting to make a brown elf, and also a differently abled one too, and I settled on her being blind. I thought it’d be an interesting study since elves have heightened and stronger senses, and here was someone who was born without one. I will say, she wasn’t perfect representation at the time, since I unknowingly fell into a bad trap of “blind person uses super senses to get around anyways with no issue”, which is something I learned later that a lot of blind people don’t like to see in media about visually impaired people! The importance of doing research beforehand, kids. Especially if you’re writing of a culture, lifestyle, or experience you haven’t lived.

William/Thanatos: .......................ok.........I don’t...........remember, sorry. To explain a little, “Thanatos” actually existed on my blog as a man named William O’Connor! A man who had died but still lived on by some raw accidental deal made by his mom to some sort of death-like entity. I only remember that I was thinking on him back when I was in another state visiting by undergrad for like the first time? And Gen Con was going on and I had like just stuck my toe into C.ritical R.ole, but I don’t know if any of that actually influenced William. Anyways, I had no intention to actually ever state or clarify what “Death” was as I intended for It to just be some sort of amalgamation of different interpretations of Death. But later on I thought it’d open up for some more interesting opportunities if I put a name to the thing and had it able to interact and do a little more. Maybe a bit before Dawn came around, for reasons?

Lucia: I had mentioned in Ren’s backstory that he ran with a group of elves when he was a kid on the streets and I’d already established another, Aeon (who’s now a side muse) so I thought it’d be fun to pick out who their de facto leader was. And I thought it’d be funny if she seemed like the least intimidating-looking person ever, but absolutely was the leader of them all for good reason. I then picked up my “angsty backstory” hammer, and I then gave her a prompt solid whack with it.

Alexa: “Okay, so I touched on the elf trafficking, but what if I did what happened when one was successfully trafficked?” Et voila. 

Val: ‘Kristen, you just added Alexa, and sure you established she has a partner but you don’t need to full on add him as a muse-- oh no how did he get on my muse page.’ Alexa and Val are also meant to be foils in the way they deal with their servitude, with Alexa having given in and Val still being rebellious. Plus, I just love non-romantic soulmates. Mwah.

Imani: “I want a Black muse. An unambiguously Black muse. Make her an elf too while I’m at it.” I love sibling dynamics and I’m a sucker and wimp for older sibling dynamic stories too so that also came into play with her and her younger brother.

🤔 THINKING FACE — what are some of your oc's quirks/mannerisms?

He has a pretty bad habit of messing with his hair when it’s down, around his face, or within hands reach of him. Things like pulling on it, rolling a strand between his fingers, anything along those lines. It is actually pretty distracting to him though when he gets to messing with it, so it’s part of the reason why he keeps it tied up or back. It’s also indicative of him focusing or trying to focus on something if he pushes it back and redoes the tie.

He also has a bad habit of getting into people’s personal space whenever he’s getting more interested in what they say, or if he’s overall getting pretty into the conversation. This one he’s also aware about and whether he reels it in depends entirely on how nice he plans on being in that moment.

For someone always wearing a smile, Zhaohui’s “true face” is actually pretty expressionless. Once someone digs past the layers of joking, then rage, they’ll reach…nothing. It’s like hitting the roots of one of those dead, petrified trees. It’s a worrying phenomenon for sure (for me at least), and something that he actually fully hasn’t caught onto yet.

💙 BLUE HEART — does your oc have any cool/special powers and/or abilities? how are they with magic, if it exists in their world?

Zhaohui has his never mentioned pearl! He doesn’t ever really have a need to use it, but it’s there. As something often associated with dragons in Chinese mythology, Zhaohui’s pearl is something that was essentially born alongside him. It’s linked to him and he has the ability to use it essentially as a scrying ball and see whatever thing or person that he wants with it. An exception exists where locations of people with especially strong magical protections— or, in Jianhuren’s case when they were missing, exceptionally funky curse stuff going on— are unable to be seen by him. However, the pearl is still capable of showing him “truths”, like how it revealed to him the true story behind Jianhuren’s disappearance. It’s something unique just to him as a fucanglong and he rarely brings it out from its…basically hammerspace. More on that in a second. It’s about palm-sized, black, and glimmers with the a golden undertone that’s the same shade as the gold in his hair and scales.

Going off from that, and this will also dip into Qingshan’s abilities a bit, is his ability to use enchantments. Enchantments are basicallllllly spells granted for use solely by the Red Eyes where expertise and mastery can only come with time and practice. It’s, how to explain it? Its limitations are only the dragon’s imagination and ability.

One example is a translation one used by the Red Eyes whenever they’re out and about. Of course, it was on the dragon themself to learn a language since it still took time to master enchantments enough. For example, Huaxiu learned a whole host of languages because he could utilize the translator effectively enough, and Minglian hasn’t really gotten it down yet, so she’s still manually learning languages and can only communicate in certain ones. Other example of use include creating constructs, like platforms or restraints, and basically having a hammerspace the Red Eyes generally use to store their weapon when not in use but in case they might need to be whipped out.

Zhaohui’s mastery is basically abysmal. He can use the translation enchantment, hammerspace, a baby bit of construct creation though it’s not as strong as it could be, and that’s about it. He essentially stopped practicing and using it much after his banishment.

Geez, this is already long enough but I forgot about the basic stuff for dragons! I'll...put it in Qingshan's section since it won't be as long as I covered a lot of other basic stuff in this one.

Qingshan has a tendency to fold and cross her arms in front of her! Cocking her head, she also of note makes facial expression very reminiscent to Huaxiu— or, more like, Huaxiu’s expressions harken back to her.

Give her something that’s in a pair of four and she’ll subtly do whatever to change the number. Four of one thing on a plate? She’s quietly either quickly eating one or destroying it with a utensil somehow. It’s more of a subconscious, ‘oh dear, four’, act than anything.

💙 BLUE HEART — does your oc have any cool/special powers and/or abilities? how are they with magic, if it exists in their world?

I already described the Red Eyes’ ability for enchantments at length! Haha, so let me just say Qingshan also didn’t practice as much because she was more interested in training with physical weapons, but she’s at least better than Zhaohui in terms of what she can do.

Going into dragon-specific stuff now! Dragons are hardy little lizards. Their scales are impervious can only be injured by enchanted metal-- metal enchanted by a specific process within their geographical area of supernaturals re: China. The gods also included this weakness in the Red Eyes so they didn't have servants that were too unstoppable, in case something went sideways one day. Anyways, enchanted metal can do a number on dragons and you can get creative with it! Get it in a liquid form? It'll mess up their insides. Powder? Probably won't be great if they breathe it in. So on.

Aside from that, dragons are generally all the usuals-- faster than humans, stronger, near instant healing ability. Some of the specific dragons have different abilities, like Meihui. Qingshan and the Red Eyes minus Zhaohui are Tianlongs-- Celestial dragons-- though.

Can the dragons drive/how well do they drive?

‘Look at that metal contraption move, how quaint.’ No one knows if they’re joking or not. Either way, can’t drive.

Can drive but she doesn’t care for cars. If a motorcycle is available she’s taking it, otherwise she might actually just prefer to walk.

Peak mom, can drive impeccably, both hands on the wheel type of deal. However, he hates it. He hates being in cars/buses/land transportation. He drives so well because he’s on ten the entire time he’s in that stupid machine.

Can drive and is probably the most ‘normal’ driver of all the dragons. Has a bit of a lead foot though.

Can also drive, but does it pretty rarely. Does the unfairly hot ‘one hand on the wheel, other chilling behind the passenger’s headrest’ type of thing. 

Can drive! Huaxiu taught her himself despite Vasilios offering to do so, which went as smoothly as you can imagine. She prefers public transit like subways and buses if they’re available though so she very rarely drives. 

Can’t drive because he’s felt no desire to learn and doesn’t care. Does anyone really want him on the road either?

Of the two that Qingshan injured during her rampage, Huaxiu and Xiaodan, Qingshan has somewhat met with Huaxiu again. She has not, however, come across Xiaodan. She feels incredibly guilty for Huaxiu’s grievous injuries at her hand, but with Xiaodan....

Frankly speaking...

She’s just about already forgotten about her altercation with him.

hair style/color: Straight and reaches about her lower back, but she rarely has it out of a ponytail.

clothing style: Oddly punk rock-ish, at odds with what someone may expect of a dragon her age and station. Qingshan’s never quite been the one for airs though (unlike Huaxiu) and is pretty casual, so she wears what’s comfortable for her.

your fears: She’s ruined things between her and Jianhuren and grievously injured her student with little hope, in her mind, of forgiveness. She’s already living out her worst nightmare and it’s one entirely of her own making.

your biggest pet peeve: Zhaohui. Aimless, lackadaisical people with seemingly no purpose, goal, or ambition in life.
