The jellyfish lifecycle is wild
Tumblr media
Female and male jellyfish release sperm and eggs into the water and then hope that they meet each other (some do this every goddamn day). Fertilised eggs turn into tiny sea worms, that swim down to the sea floor and find a spot to hang out and grow.
For a while they look like little anemones (called polyps), but when they're ready the polyp starts growing tiny, baby jellyfish in layers, and then popping them off into the ocean to live happy, brainless lives.
Tumblr media
You can see the babies forming in this image. The polyp (top middle) attaches and starts making new jellyfish in rings stacked on top of each other (top right, bottom left). Eventually when they're fully formed (bottom middle/right) they can be released into the open ocean.

Today, I was doing some research on jellyfish (as one does) and incidentally came across a couple of studies that focused on jellyfish polyps.
While it is cool... it made me realize something.
I think it’s a little misleading to think of polyps as a sort of “fetus” state for jellyfish (even though it does precede the ephyra, or baby stage)
Polyps (at least of the scyphozoan variety) could almost be regarded as individual animals in their own right. They function similarly to carnivorous corals, and have a similar diet to their medusa counterparts. Heck, they even reproduce on their own (asexually, at least) through a variety of means.
Most scyphozoan polyps even leave behind some parts of themselves after a strobilation event, and can theoretically keep producing ephyra indefinitely year-round (I think a study mentioned there was one from 1932 that was still producing ephyra? Might have to fact-check that, though)
anyways. this new line of thought has me. thinking a lot. Jellyfish are odd creatures and I think we are projecting our own chronological, fixed life cycles on them a little too hard

Hey Mimble, just wanted to say thank you for sending me asks and recommending my blog! I know a lot of my mutuals love getting your asks as well, and it really makes people’s day to know someone cares to ask about the OCs that they worked so hard on! So, thank you! 😄 I haven’t been too active lately bc of real life stuff, but I’ve noticed your name in my notifications and it means a lot! It’s not much but I made a little doodle of Mimble! I struggle drawing lalafells the most (despite my main being a lalafell), but I hope you like it 💛
Tumblr media
Thank you, that's very kind of you! And I love the picture!!! I shall treasure it. And yes I imagine Lalafells are really hard to draw because the proportions are all wonky, but I think it looks amazing!
Thank you so much again, that's really made my day! I have some RL stuff going on with work that's been getting me down, but this made me forget all about it! I hope your RL stuff resolves itself positively though.
Sorry for all the exclamation marks! I am just excited!

Facts of the Day: 🌊Moon Jellies🌊
Tumblr media
Scientific Name: Aurelia aurita
Size: Between 2 to 15 inches
Lifespan: 8 to 12 months
Reproduction: They breed through external fertilization. The species as a whole breeds year round but individuals have to wait till they reach sexual maturity in the medusae phase and then reproduce for 2 to 3 months most often in the late summer months. They can also reproduce asexually while in the polyp stage.
Diet: Tiny zooplankton, mollusk larvae, crustaceans, and small fishes
Habitat: They are found worldwide but prefer warm coastal waters in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean.
Status: Least Concerned
Summary: Moon Jellies travel in big social congregates called smacks worldwide, with larger numbers off the coast of California as well as Canada and Europe. They are a very plentiful species and are a common prey species for a lot of animals, most notably species of Sea Turtles. However a fun place Moon Jellies have been found is actually in space! 2,500 Moon Jelly polyps and ephyrae (the two early stages of development for jellies) went into orbit on the space shuttle Columbia in 1991 to study the effects of weightlessness on internal organ development. While they didn’t make it to the moon, the findings of the study helped us understand more about the effects of zero gravity on astronauts.

Deep Dive Papers: Asexual reproduction strategies in the moon jellyfish Aurelia (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa)
Tumblr media
(X) | Published: 12 January 2023
Key Findings:
This paper investigated the asexual reproduction strategies of the moon jellyfish Aurelia, which is known to have both sexual and asexual reproduction.
The authors found that Aurelia primarily reproduces asexually through a process called strobilation, in which the adult jellyfish produces small polyps that eventually develop into juvenile jellyfish.
Strobilation was found to be influenced by a range of environmental factors, including temperature, light, and food availability, with higher temperatures and more food leading to more frequent strobilation.
The study also identified a previously unknown asexual reproduction strategy in Aurelia, in which small fragments of the jellyfish can break off and develop into juvenile jellyfish.
This fragmentation process was found to be more common in Aurelia populations in more disturbed environments, suggesting that it may be an adaptation to environmental stress.
The authors note that the ability of Aurelia to reproduce asexually through strobilation and fragmentation allows for rapid population growth and may contribute to its success as a dominant jellyfish species in many marine environments.

Logan, I have some facts to share with you :D
The Facts
According to Monterey Bay Aquarium, "...nearly 2,500 moon jelly polyps and ephyrae—two early stages in the jelly life cycle—went into orbit aboard the space shuttle Columbia in May 1991." To clarify, this is about moon jellyfish (Aurelia Aurita).
Lavender became associated with the queer community around the 1950s. This fact was gathered from various sources.
"Skipper is an informal name for the captain," according to Vocabulary.com. This website is a dictionary site, filled with words and their meanings.
Hope you enjoyed these :3

alright I got curious about what type of jellyfish Frilled Jellyfish Cookie was based off of and learned something interesting So these guys below are called Aurelia coerulea, also known as MOON jellies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(here's them side by side, the resemblance is clear) But not only that, it turns out that there are jellyfish can be "immortal", in a sense. From what I understand, they can revert back to the polyps stage, bypassing death. Err, refer to this image
Tumblr media
While this phenomenon is most known with Turritopsis dohrnii, there has been documentation that Aurelia coerulea (the asian moon jelly) can do this as well. So Frilled Jellyfish Cookie's revival wasn't entirely unwarranted (though it was incredibly dumb to have it occur so shortly after her death scene-)

You're telling me a moon jellied this fish??
Aurelia aurita, also known as moon jellies, or common jellyfish, are an extremely iconic jellyfish. These guys are found 25–40 cm across and recognizable by their four gonads seen at the top of their bells. These jellies don't have long, extending tentacles like some other jellyfish, but have short tentacles around their bells. You can find these goobers around coastal waters in many parts of the world.
Moon jellyfish originate on earth and not the moon, sadly, BUT some actually have been to space! In 1991, some 2500 moon jelly polyps were put into space on the space shuttle Columbia. The purpose of this experiment was to see how jellyfish would develop differently in weightlessness. The jellyfish ended up having more irregular movement and pulsing, as if suffering from vertigo, but overall developed normally. Since humans and jellyfish share similar hair cells used to determine the direction of gravity, this was a good sign for the effects of prolonged space missions.
You can find more information about this space trip from this goofy little 90s NASA educational video:

Sometimes Shio, daughter of the Kojin of the Blue, will climb into the fishtank and sleep, much to the confusion of the fish in the tank.

Musical Themes for OCs...
If your character had a theme which played in game when they made an appearance, what might that be like?
Emet-Selch's early appearances used Bedlam's Brink, Graha-Tia in Endwalker gets either a jazzy version of Eternal Wind or Tomorrow and Tomorrow, depending on the situation, and Estinien becomes associated with Dragonsong. Matoya has The Mushroomery and, in cutscenes, Zenos has Meteor.
If I were in a position to set rules, which I'm not really, I'd request themes which are either entirely or mostly instrumental, but let me know what you think.
As for Mimble, his would probably be something like the instrumental version of Sour Times by Miloš Karadaglić, at least for bits involving investigating, plotting and pondering...
youtube
I suspect Inxli at @pinxli would have something sweet, possibly even cute, with just slight undertones of immense and sinister power.
Naru at @blucifermain would perhaps need something faintly tragic and dark, with enough percussion to reference the steppes of her homeland?
Fennie at @scholarlostintime might have something lighter, but busy enough to reflect the happy chaos of mixing study and family life.
A'Vett at @avettabendrot might have something playful, with a lot of Ishgardian instruments.
Phoebe at @phoebe-of-ivalice would have something sinuous and darkly intriguing I think.
Amon already has his own themes, but perhaps @spotofmummery feels that Koh needs a theme of her own to reflect her investigations and discoveries?
I could be wrong about all of the above of course. Do let me know!
And there are some I can't begin to imagine, such as @yloiseconeillants, @loldragoon-ffxiv, @firelightmuse or the many characters of @cadrenebula.
So tagging all and sundry. Let me know what your OC's musical themes might be and maybe even provide an example.
@eljaofthecrookedgrin, @miqomischief, @umbral-grimiore, @aroseyetbloomedwrites, @meatball-headache, @elfyourmother, @mirageofthecrystal, @kskellington, @furys-mercy, @aurelia-polyps. @superiorthaumaturge, @captainkurosolaire, @hywl, @hadriel-ffxiv, @kittieology, @meepsthemiqo, @nyarumi-nyan, @placesyoucallhome, @zuraoftheblack, @saeta
And anyone else I might have missed or who is interested.
