CASTOR FLETCHER, the Storyteller
BASICS.
Name: Castor Fletcher Nicknames: none Species: human Age: early 50s, but he appears around 60 Birthday: August 2nd Gender: cis male (he/him) Birthplace: Boulogne-sur-Mer, France Residence: Wetherton, England Occupation: owns and manages the Twilight Theater along with his business partner, Vela; occasional playwright; prior to this, he spent many years traveling the world as an able seaman Orientation: gay

APPEARANCE.
Height: 5'10'' Complexion: light, wrinkled, with distinct smile/laugh lines around his mouth and eyes Eyes: ocean blue; “knowing twinkle in his eye” type Hair: silvery grey, short; also has a short beard Build: solid, sturdy; not muscular, as he’s gotten a bit out-of-shape with age, but once quite athletic Style: semi-formal to formal; “showman attire”
Castor severely injured his right leg at some point prior to buying the theater. It never quite healed properly, and he uses a dark brown wooden cane. He prefers not to discuss the incident that resulted in this injury. If someone asks about it, he will invent a story on the spot, usually far-fetched enough that people can guess it isn’t true. If someone presses him for honesty, he will gently switch topics.
He appears older than he actually is mainly due to the long-term effects of his time magic.

DEMEANOR.
MBTI: ENTP/ENFP Alignment: Chaotic Good // Chaotic Neutral
Imaginative, creative, enthusiastic, expressive, clever, sociable, amiable, curious, playful, perceptive, talkative, eccentric, whimsical, idealistic, dramatic, unrealistic, often dishonest (for his own amusement and/or for the sake of storytelling), disorganized, easily distracted; punctual, but lazy at times (time magic makes it quite easy for him to slack off)
Castor will sometimes pretend to lack knowledge in certain subjects/skills for his own amusement. For example, he may feign ignorance about sailing simply to see how well (or poorly) someone else can explain it. Despite being quite skilled in chess, he will also sometimes let someone win on purpose, watch them gloat over it, politely ask for a rematch, and then beat them easily. He finds a roundabout victory more satisfying than a straightforward one.
In general, Castor values entertainment more than the truth. If the truth is boring, he sees no reason not to stretch things a bit (or fabricate an entire story outright) to add intrigue and excitement. He is skilled at deception, but his fondness for fantasy tends to make his tales somewhat less believable. In other words: he can tell convincing lies, but since he usually lies or exaggerates for theatrics alone, it’s often easy to tell he’s skewing things a bit.
Castor is also scarily perceptive. It would be difficult to deceive him… if he wasn’t so easily distracted with daydreams and stories. That being said, he’s still hard to deceive when he isn’t caught in thought.
The incident that resulted in Castor’s leg injury also gave him a shakier side. He prefers hiding this part of himself entirely — both because it is a very personal matter and because it doesn’t match his showman persona. He is a natural actor skilled at deception, so he usually doesn’t find this difficult. Still, he has occasional bad days in which he needs to spend time alone. Vela knows this and doesn’t mind handling things in his absence to give him a chance to recover. Castor appreciates her understanding a great deal.

ABILITIES.
☆ TIME MANIPULATION.
Castor is a timekeeper. He can create time bubbles of varying sizes: big enough to fill his whole office or small enough to encircle only himself and his immediate surroundings. Within his typical time bubble, time is sped up. An hour within the bubble is equal to a minute outside the bubble. This essentially “freezes time” for anyone within the bubble.
He can only have one bubble active at a time. The longer he keeps it active, the more it drains his energy (though, after much practice, he can maintain it for quite a while). The bubble must have at least one person in it, and Castor must be among them. In general, anyone within the bubble cannot leave it, and anyone outside the bubble cannot enter it.
He can also create time bubbles in which time is greatly slowed down (a minute within the bubble equals an hour outside the bubble). He rarely does these ones, as they waste a lot of time.
Though Castor can use his time magic without any type of instrument, it can be finicky. He owns a special pocket watch which allows him to harness and channel his magic with more precision. The watch glimmers a silver-white shade, like deep sea pearls and moonlight. Thin patterns trace along its surface: vines wrap around the metal, a sailboat coasts along a silver sea. A slender chain extends from it and drapes from Castor’s pocket at all times, aside from when he withdraws the watch to check it. Although the hands on his watch appear to stop when he manipulates time, they are actually still moving — simply an infinitesimal amount at a time. Tiny, nearly imperceptible ticks of the second hand.
Castor acquired his magic as a young boy and won the pocket watch later on. He enjoys inventing tales about the origin of his magic and watch to those who ask about it. He never makes it clear whether he is telling the truth, only pieces of it, or an outright lie.
He used to be a troublemaker and rather playful with his magic. He has matured over the years and now uses it more responsibly, but he still has fun with it. He often uses it to fit chess games and daydreaming into his day without falling behind schedule.
Though Castor may seem to use his time magic quite casually at times, he must follow strict rules with it. There are cases in which he cannot use his magic. He considers these rules rather boring and sees no reason to bother explaining them to others. He will, however, explain the basics about how his magic works if someone questions him about it. He finds ways to make this explanation more fun.

DETAILS.
Commonly Found: somewhere in the theater, walking in the park or somewhere else in town, sitting on a bench near the docks (reading and/or watching the ocean), reading in a library or in a coffee shop (often folklore books), playing chess, purchasing ocean-themed trinkets in a store
Castor has always loved storytelling. Tales that are fantastical — that involve magic or other strangeness — are his favorite. He enjoys telling them and listening to them. Though he is deeply imaginative and likes weaving his own stories, he is also a collector of intriguing tales and will share ones he has heard from others (giving credit to the original tellers, of course). He has had a rather eventful life and will sometimes share tales about his adventures, though he often can’t resist stretching the truth.
His love of storytelling strengthened his love of theater, in which he could see stories brought to life. He even writes his own plays on occasion, and most audience members rather enjoy them.
He has osteoarthritis and takes medicine for it.
He also has mild ADHD (combined type), which he takes medication for as well.
Castor dislikes storms (and rainfall in general) for several reasons, including the fact that his bad leg and his arthritis joints ache more when it rains.
Castor can sense when time acts strangely in a nearby location. This means he is good at sensing (and avoiding) entrances to fae realms.
He can speak English, French, Czech, and snippets of other languages that he picked up while traveling. Also knows some British Sign Language.
He loves the nautical aesthetic. It reminds him of his sailing days. His office in the theater is filled with sailboat models, ships in bottles, glass jars filled with seashells, vials of sand, an old globe, and all manner of other ocean-themed knickknacks, several of which are magicked in one way or another. In addition to these, he has many perpetual motion devices (like a Newton’s Cradle and things like this and this) on his shelves. Even without seeing his office or hearing his seafaring tales, people can often guess he spent some time on the ocean. He simply has that vibe. It pleases him immensely when anyone mentions it.

Upon being knocked over, the mug should have fallen and shattered, and its contents should have spilled over the floor. Instead, it never hit the wood. It froze halfway there. The drink had begun spilling out, but the liquid hung suspended in midair as well.
“Ah.” Castor stared at it, surprise and slight alarm overtaking his typical casual expression. He still held his pocket watch in one hand. He had checked the time at precisely the wrong moment. Regaining his senses, he cleared his throat and offered the sole witness a sheepish smile. “I don’t suppose you could… forget this ever happened, could you?”

most theater workers refer to the owners by their first names (vela and castor), though they may flip to calling them ‘mx. chambers’ and ‘mr. fletcher’ on a whim sometimes. they’re more likely to use their first names when mentioning them around each other and their last names when in the presence of the owners themselves. basically, they see the owners in person and they’re like ‘oh i should probably refer to them formally now bc Business Etiquette (tm).’
they also tend to refer to the owners formally when speaking to guests at the theater, or in non-casual situations, like during the fancier performances or parties the theater sometimes holds.
in casual settings, the owners generally don’t mind whether people use their first names or an honorific and their last names. this is because, when they hire someone, they give the new theater worker clear and careful permission to call them either way. if they haven’t given someone permission, it’s safer to default to mx. chambers and mr. fletcher.
the names a theater worker uses also depends on the theater worker’s personality (such as how formal they are around coworkers and around superiors). for example, mr. atkinson (benedict atkinson), the bookkeeper, exclusively calls the owners by their honorifics and last names and tends to frown upon theater workers who use their first names.
as a side note, vela prefers when theater workers use her nickname (vela) as opposed to her full first name (velanova). the only people who use her full first name consistently are ones she speaks with in meetings of the more magical sort. vela also corrects anyone who uses ‘ms/miss’ for her, as she isn’t comfortable with gendered titles of any form.
as another side note, vela and castor are close friends and nearly always address each other by first name and refer to each other by first name (unless they’re in especially formal situations/settings, or if they’re joking or irritated with the other).

the only person in the theater who castor dislikes but vela still hired is benedict, their bookkeeper. castor wanted to refuse to give him the job because he concluded (correctly) that benedict has almost no imagination and even less of a sense of humor, but benedict is genuinely skilled at bookkeeping and the theater needed someone to organize its finance, so vela overruled castor’s decision and hired him.

vela and castor got into an argument over the name of the theater — vela wanted it called the midnight theater because it matched the color scheme more; castor wanted it called the twilight theater because he thought it sounded nicer. they settled the debate over a game of chess — one of the only games of chess castor has ever won against vela, which made vela suspect he only pretends to be terrible at it for his own amusement unless winning would benefit him in some significant way. vela’s still a bit bitter.
