He dismounts from the step ladder, his index finger in a copy of Œdipus Rex.
“As you know, I am a student of the theater,” he says. “And as Sophocles would tell you, you cannot change your fate.”
Mirabel accepts the slim volume, looking unconvinced. This is the part where she asks him if he ever thinks about gouging his own eyes out. She squints at a lithograph of the doomed king on the title page, his empty sockets weeping blood.
“What if Sophocles was wrong?”
Bruno Madrigal explores his Gift.

yknow i don’t feel my “poor in a distinctly jewish academic way” upbringing any more potently than when someone brings up tom lehrer as a novelty. like... wym your aunt judy never taught you the lyrics to plagiarize as a child. wym your mother didn’t burst into œdipus rex when you were doing freud in high school psychology. my mans tom is the blueprint wym...

œdipus anon!!!! moral philo anon here, i studied classic lit and there are may different version of the tragedy and myth, the more accredited one is he blinds himself after he discovers he fucked his mom lmao. i suggest you look into oedipus rex (sophocles version) and Antigone (also sophocles). this last one is about oedipus’s daughter he had with his mother, jocasta. they explore different aspects of ancient greek culture!!
[shakes fist] god,, i love academics supporting academics .... moral philosophy anon you are so valid and doing the most here; œdipus anon i sincerely hope that essay is going well for you!!

ok so you love Sophocles, how do you feel about Chekhov?
Well anon, I’ll say this: If you introduce Chekhov’s knife in Act 1 of a story that references Œdipus Rex, then your hero has to stab his own eyes out by Act 3.

Quote
... is there a more miserable man in the world than the man before you? Is there a man more hated of Heaven? No stranger, no citizen, may receive him into his house, not a soul may speak to him, and no mouth but my own mouth has laid this curse upon me. Am I not wretched? May I be swept from this world before I have endured this doom!
King Oedipus, by Sophocles (429 BCE), translated to Modern English by W. B. Yeats (1928)
