Recent visually beautiful and generally watchable Russian fantasy movies

(because I start forgetting they exist at all) Ironically, all of them are adaptations of books/comics.

I Am Dragon / Он — дракон (2015) This movie is a very free adaptation of the novel "The Rite" / "Ритуал" by Maryna and Serhiy Dyachenko (Марина и Сергей Дяченко). It's a reinterpreting of an ancient tale about a maiden, a hero and a dragon. I don`t like the novel because it's very postmodern, wracks the typical fairytale plot and hurts my escapist feelings by ugly reality, but the movie is pretty fairytale-ish and nice. Firstly, it is visually beautiful and represent Slavic pseudo-medieval lore the way it should have always been in Slavic fantasy.

Secondly, as a love story between a monster and a maiden, it has got A PLENTY of tropes I'm usually looking for in Chinese dramas, so I understand very well why it was pretty popular in Asia.

Thirdly, when I said it's visually beautiful I wasn't joking. The main hero is played not by an actor, but by a male model, who is shirtless all the time (and sometimes pantless) and has a very fit and good-looking body. It's something unbelievable that someone in Russia made a movie to please women's eyes! Really, it's insane!

The folk-rock band Мельница wrote an insanely beautiful song "Обряд" (The Rite) for this movie (more matched to the book plot, though), but it was never used as OST, which is a shame. The song is about a black sheep girl, who is denied by society and asks a dragon to come for her and to take her away, because the dragon is denied by this world just like her. You can listen to it here. The band also has a song "Змей" (The Wyrm) (based on Lev Gumilev's poem), which is more accurate to the plot of the movie: the wyrm kidnaps maidens to make them its wives, but they are all dying during the flight; at the end of the song a hero-knight is ready to shoot it in order to stop it. It ends with HE, which is better than the book's obscure ending, so it is pleasure for me to rewatch it till these days.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor / Майор Гром: Чумной Доктор (2021)

It is an adaptation of Russian comic series "Major Grom" by Bubble comics. I am traditionally not very happy with the source material, but it is very good reworked to be the screen play of this movie.

It's very beautifully made in terms of director's, cameraman's and screenwriter's work, which is a rare thing for Russian movies. Also, the actors are young and handsome, especially the villain, which is a rare thing not only for Russian movies, but for the current Western movies, too. It has got a lot of allusions to Russian reality and a lot of beautiful views of Saint Petersburg, the second capital of Russia and one of the most beautiful Russian cities. And it has got some unusual visual solutions that turn it into a comic it should be.

The plot revolves around a mysterious serial killer (kinda bad Batman), a black sheep police officer and Russian Mark Zuckerberg (kind of). Mark Zuckerberg is the best guy of this movie and I like him a lot! Серёёёёжа! 🧡🧡🧡

This movie wasn't popular in Russia because of political situation in the country by the moment of its release (the both sides found out in there something insulting for them and banned it), but even if it has something like that, I honestly didn't pay attention to it. It's just a nice blockbuster with a tragic and handsome villain. The villain also has got his own BL-drama (in the comics they are really lovers, it`s as obvious as it could be shown in a Russian comic).

By the way, the villain is hot, insane, ruthless, sensitive and suffering. How does he contain all of this character treats in one personality? you may ask. He doesn`t. He has dissociative identity disorder, I would answer.

I don`t know if it works by now, but some time ago you could watch this lovely movie on Netflix.

The Master and Margarita / Мастер и Маргарита (2024) This is a loose adaptation of Russian classical novel "The Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov. I genuinely hate this book, but the adaptation reinterprets it, divides it into very interesting layers and makes it understandable and beautiful.

It`s layered, so it will probably be hard to understand what layer are we currently on if you are not familiar with the original story. The first layer is an ugly Soviet reality, the second layer is a plot of the novel that the main hero is writing, a story within a story. The third layer is the insane intertwining of the first two layers. On the reality layer the Master loses his job and freedom because of friend's denunciation and becomes star-crossed lovers with a married woman. On the novel level he meets devil, who visits Moscow by chance, and the devil gives him and his woman opportunity to live their lives being free from everything that usually tortures people IRL. Somewhere among those layers is a little plot about Jesus and Pontius Pilate.

The movie is visually beautiful. Although it feels pretty anti-Soviet, Soviet visuals of the movie are gorgeous. There were used the Stalin-times concepts of Moscow of the Future, the CGI buildings in frame came from the real architecture projects of those times. The Stalin Empire architecture style and views are typical for Moscow (but as I know, ironically, this all was shot in Saint Petersburg). It seems to me that this movie is heavily stuffed with visual allusions to the Western works: devil's escort looks like bunch of Pennywises, Margarita is Enchantress from Suicide Squad I, the scene of blood dripping is from Blade I etc. Usually, when I see it in Russian movies, it feels like plagiarism because I can recognize the reference but there is nothing except for these references . But here we have got the plot, so the allusions work as allusions and don`t irritate me.

The movie is dark, disturbing, uncomfortable. It really makes you feel as if you watch devil and his escort marching around you; they ravage, kill and destroy everything and you can only breathlessly, helplessly and in fear watch them. The German actor playing devil is insanely good. He stole the movie and I understand why it should have been named Woland (the devil's name) instead of the current movie's name. You may want to watch it, because it's very unusual in terms of plot and visuals experience, especially when you are not familiar with the book.

Ok so I was trying to ignore my finals and decided to watch a movie called " i am dragon/dragon inside me" and ITS THE BEST THING IVE EVER SEEN IN MY PITIFUL WHOLE LIFE

Do you see this pretty little face here? He is the cutest sad boy you'll ever know of.

The way he cares abt Miroslava made me feel so so so so happy for them while sad for being singles as fuck.

OH AND

That's what I thought in the beginning, I had the feeling that she was going to be one of those princess from old movies who just sit and wait for help. But I couldn't be more wrong abt it! She is strong, brave, smart and so beautiful that I don't know if I want to be her or be hers

While talking about pretty people let's see another angle of our man, Arman.

If you aren't convinced to watch this, i must say that the movie talks about Russian folklore in a beauty and the beast kind of way (I'm sorry it's the only thing that I found to compare with😭)

I am very interested in Russian fairytales and movies, do you have any recomendation of a russian movie with theme similar to Beauty and the Beast? Or any good russian fairytale movie that you'd reccomend. I can't be realistic like RAIUNO Bella y la Bestia or Fantasy. I like fantasy as well ^-^. Thanks in advance!

Beauty and the Beast plot in Russia is known by Sergey Timofeyevich Aksakov's tale The Scarlet Flower (published in 1858). The story is recognizable - a merchant goes far from home and asks his three daughters what gifts they want, the youngest one, Nasten'ka, asks for a scarlet flower. Her father finds it in a garden of a mysterious beast who turns out to be a cursed prince. In 1952 the tale was made into an animated film (here English subtitles are available) - highly recommend watching. Btw, in Italian version the cursed prince is voiced by Massimo Wertmüller (Maurice Dubois in La Bella e La Bestia). Here are some of my favorite fairy tale films/cartoons: Sadko (1952) - based on a Russian bylina (epic tale); Morozko (1964); The Frog Princess (1954) - cartoon; The Tale of the Dead Tsarevna and of the Seven Bogatyrs (1951) - cartoon based on 1833 poem by Aleksandr Pushkin. A romance film "I am Dragon" (2015) also has Beauty and the Beast plot and a fairy tale-like feeling. It's beautifully made and worth watching.

Ahaha, I'm glad my silly little doodles could be of service to introduce you to the book! Unfortunately, I didn't read the Ritual in English and the translation is curently not available anywhere, or so I was told by other fans looking to read the source material.

BUT! There’s a group of fans currently working on an unofficial English translation on AO3, with three chapters out so far! So that's where I can point your attention and I sincerely hope eventually the whole book gets translated or finally gets an official translation because it's needed dearly!

Recently I've seen a movie called Damsel (2024) and wow, it's a pretty good movie. And I really like it.😁

I decided to watch it after my cousin told me that in her opinion it has the same energy as the movie On - Drakon/Он – дракон (2015), in English I Am Dragon/He's a Dragon/He is Dragon.

And indeed, both these movies are similar in some way.

After watching Damsel, I felt like watching On - Drakon again! 😆

Аквапарк The Ho Thuy Tien открылся в 2004 году на окраине города Хюэ, что в центральном Вьетнаме. На момент открытия он был ещё не достроен. Н�� из-за своей нерентабельности аквапарк был вскоре закрыт.

За какие-то 10 лет парк развлечений пришел в упадок. Полопавшаяся краска, гостевые домики остались без крыш, горки, затянутые лианами - и над всем этим возвышается мрачная трехэтажная фигура дракона, который обвил куполообразное сооружение посреди озера. Раньше там были аквариумы, а сейчас - ржавчина, граффити и отвалившаяся краска. Бывший аквапарк нынче зарос травой и деревьями, и на его территории одно время водились крокодилы. Одно время проходила информация о том, что аквапарк хотели отреставрировать к 2013-2014 году, однако из этого так ничего и не вышло и обещания остались лишь обещаниями.

The Ho Thuy Tien water park opened in 2004 on the outskirts of the city of Hue, in central Vietnam. At the time of opening it was not yet completed. But due to its unprofitability, the water park was soon closed.

In just 10 years, the amusement park fell into disrepair. Peeled paint, guest houses left without roofs, slides covered with vines - and above all this rises the gloomy three-story figure of a dragon, which has entwined a domed structure in the middle of the lake. There used to be aquariums there, but now there is rust, graffiti and peeling paint. The former water park is now overgrown with grass and trees, and at one time there were crocodiles on its territory. At one time there was information that they wanted to restore the water park by 2013-2014, but nothing came of it and the promises remained just promises.

Мой последний одинокий выходной подходит к концу) как классическая плохая жена кайфовала эти дни одна 😀надо было наверное отдыхать по инструкции кота, он весь день спит, ближе к ночи захочет поиграть

Но я почти весь день убиралась, надо было по хорошему ещё в магазин сходить, но было уже лень

Сейчас кайфую с пачкой чипсов и смотрю "он дракон". Забьем на сюжет и диалоги, у нашего кино часто с этим проблема) но фильм такой красивый, что лично я всё остальное прощаю 😀

Очень красивая часть с ритуалом передачи девушек дракону, этот же ритуал потом стали использовать для выдачи девчонок замуж😀 ну да, почему бы нет

Короче смотрю фильм второй раз, ни о чем не жалею 😀

Хотела я сделать пост на тему символа года. Конечно же забыла снова, пока зима не напомнила о том, что часики тикают. А я ещё не украсила квартиру до сих пор. (Кошмар какой-то😮‍💨)

И так, 2024 год - это "Зеленый Деревянный Дракон". (Зелененький, мой любимый цвет *верещит от восторга*).

В свои права вступает одно из самых могущественных и ярких животных восточного календаря. Зелёный цвет символизирует гибкость и податливость. В восточной культуре он обозначает спокойствие, гибкость, умение подстраиваться под обстоятельства без ущерба для себя. Кроме того, зелёный цвет символизирует народ. А это значит, что Дракон проявит к простым жителям планеты особую благосклонность. Но не смотря на символику цвета, сам Дракон — это авторитетное животное, символ императорской власти Китая. Его изображение можно увидеть в Поднебесной на многих строениях и предметах быта.

В прошлом простолюдины не могли «прикасаться» к божественному Дракону, за это могло последовать серьёзное наказание. Но как символ года Дракон — вовсе не такой уж суровый. Считается, что под его покровительством всегда проходят едва ли не самые удачные времена. Так что, будем надеться на приход приятных встреч, положительных перемен и решения многих проблем.

Как же лучше всего встретить символ года?

Так как Дракон вольное существо, встретить его, как хозяина года, желательно на улице, а не в тесной квартире. Для многих это вряд ли составит проблему. Даже если вы находитесь в городе, выпить первый бокал шампанского под бой курантов можно, выйдя во двор или на балкон, а уже потом приступить к трапезе за столом.

Тем, кто будет встречать грядущий год в частном доме с камином, необходимо следить за тем, чтобы огонь в нём пылал на протяжении всей ночи, чтобы не разгневать Дракона. Унылое застолье, которое не сопровождается танцами, плясками, играми и всевозможным весельем, недопустимо. Дракон веселое существо и такое поведение ему явно не понравится. Даже если вы не любите запускать петарды, подготовьте хотя бы хлопушки, новогодняя ночь должна быть шумной. Это требование Дракона. Хорошо, если вы составите сценарий праздника, в котором будет фигурировать Дракон в положительном ключе.

Какие цвета и наряды понравятся дракону?

В грядущем году будут господствовать цвета, которые любит Дракон, это все оттенки зелёного и золотого. Эти цвета отлично комбинируются между собой.

Не возбраняется наряд красного цвета, так как символ года любит всё яркое и жизнеутверждающее, не даром в Китае даже невесты часто выбирают красное платье.

Не желательно использовать в своём образе коричневый, темно-желтый и белый. Что касается материи, отдавайте предпочтения натуральной, избегайте синтетических тканей. Дракон известный аристократ, поэтому, наряды, которые бросаются в глаза, как дешевая подделка, не подойдут. Лучше разоритесь и купите стильную и хорошую вещь.

Что можно, а что нельзя подавать к столу?

Всё, что будет на столе, должно состоять только из натуральных продуктов. Как известно с древних времён, Дракон любит полакомиться свежатиной, т.е., сырым мясом или только свежеприготовленным. Подойдут сырокопченые колбасы, буженина, окорока, курица, перепела, индейка, говядина, рыба. Не допустимо покупать к Новому году полуфабрикаты, а в котлеты нельзя добавлять хлеб, чтобы не разгневать его хозяина. Приправьте блюда огненными специями, ведь Дракон существо огнедышащее.

Консервы на празднестве запрещены, как и блюда из замороженных мясных продуктов. Если сомневаетесь в сроке годности продуктов, лучше их не использовать, Дракон не любит «вчерашнюю свежесть». Постарайтесь сделать покупки накануне Нового года. Разнообразие на столе обязательно понравится Дракону, всевозможные сладости и десерты, любые салаты можете подавать, соблюдая вышеупомянутые условия.

Какие подарки лучше не дарить?

Первое правило, это запрет на предметы, связанные с огнём, к ним относятся свечи и зажигалки. Так же, не следует дарить картины, постеры, на которых изображено пламя. Китайцы считают, что подобные подарки только разозлят Дракона, так как, всё огненное может производить только он. Ведь все знают, что, когда это существо открывает пасть, он изрыгает пламя.

Ещё один предмет негодный для новогоднего подарка, это часы, потому что на китайском это слово звучит почти так же, как проводы в последний путь человека. Все острые предметы в качестве подарка недопустимы, например ножи. Пусть даже это будет эксклюзив или ручная работа, преподнося подобный презент, вы отпугнете удачу от того, кому дарите.

Не покупайте в подарок зонтик, он символизирует распад чего-либо, особенно важно соблюдать это правило при выборе презента людям, которые состоят в отношениях. Не годится дарить шляпу зелёного цвета, это верх неуважения к Дракону. Считается, что одевший её, напоминает черепаху и будет всегда прятаться от проблем (как черепаха в панцирь) и их решения. Так же, под запрет попадает обувь (на китайском слово является омонимом зла) и носо��ые платки (прощальный привет).

Основные рекомендации:

Ублажить дракона можно очень просто, нужно украсить дом различными деревянными предметами, один из которых, должен изображать зелёного Дракона. Если этого не сделать, часть удачи вы потеряете.

Тем парам, которые планируют родить ребёнка, следует знать, что Драконов год самый подходящий для этого. Дети, появившиеся на свет, будут обладать очень хорошими качествами — рассудительностью, спокойствием, целеустремленностью, лидерскими качествами. Безусловно, ребёнок добьётся в жизни многого.

Сны, которые приснятся в новогоднюю ночь, станут вещими. Обязательно запомните, что вам довелось увидеть. Если приснилось что-то неприятное, у вас будет возможность подкорректировать свою жизнь.

К Новому году мы все стремимся одарить своих близких и друзей подарками, купить что-нибудь вкусненькое на стол. Но, следует помнить, что нельзя тратить абсолютно все деньги, в вашем кошельке обязательно должна греметь хоть какая-то мелочь.

Встречая Драконов год, позаботьтесь о том, чтобы в доме были чистота и порядок. Всё, что у вас накопилось за предыдущий год, весь хлам, ненужные вещи, рваное белье, отнесите на помойку. Символ года увидит ваше прилежание, поймет, что вы его ждёте и будет стараться как можно быстрее исполнить ваши желания.
