Inji Aflatoun was an Egyptian painter and activist in the women's movement. She was a "leading spokesman for the Marxist-progressive-nationalist-feminist spokeswoman in the late 1940s and 1950s", as well as a "pioneer of modern Egyptian art" and "one of the important Egyptian visual artists"

Here we see two paintings by Arab artists that depict Angela Davis--activist, abolitionist, professor of philosophy--and respond to her example of principled survival in the face of the carceral state. Between 1970 and 1972, Angela Davis was incarcerated for 18 months. During that time, the Free Angela Davis campaign became a worldwide cause. 

On top, Tunisian artist Sadek Kamesch (الصادق قمش)’s The Freedom Fighter Angela Davis, which was exhibited in Damascus in 1972 as part of a First Arab Festival of National Plastic Art, organized by the Syrian fine arts syndicate. Kamesch had sent a series of graphic, pop-art inspired paintings depicting class struggle against banks, bureaucrats, and other figures of oppression to the exhibition.

Below, Egyptian artist Inji Efflatoun (إنجي أفلاطون‎)’s portrait of Davis, completed around 1973. Efflatoun is said to have presented the painting to Davis in Egypt, in the context of Davis’s post-prison world tour. Efflatoun had herself served time as a prisoner of conscience (1959 until 1963, for her ties to the Communist Party) and in the 1970s was a recognized leader of internationally-organized feminist activity in Egypt. See Sara Salem’s work on Davis’s visit to Egypt, and the particular possibilities and limits of transnational feminist solidarity it illuminated. The existence of the portrait was known, but an image of it was only recently located by art historian Nadine Atallah.
