Today I was more productive than I expected to be. I have been struggling a lot with focusing, and today it wasn't an exception, but I still crossed out all the tasks of my daily to do list. Autumn is definitely here, the temperatures got very low, and we also got the first rain today. Tomorrow it's going to be a bit annoying to commute if it will rain again, but I am not too mad at finally having proper autumnal weather. I am walking around the house wrapped in a blanket at all times, but that is my regular form for most of the year. I am still feeling a bit stuck with my crochet project, so I am trying not to force myself, because it's a hobby and not a job, but at the same time I would like to pick it up again because since my energies are so low I am spending more of my free time watching digital screens and it's not ideal. The thing is that I would normally read in my free time to shut off my brain and relax, but right now I am way too tired to also read in my free time. I end up listening to podcasts which are fun, but if I am not crocheting while doing that I am either playing some mindlss games or coloring on my tablet, which is still a digital screen, and my eyes aren't happy about it. I am thankfully getting a bit of reading done with graphic novels since I have decided to reread the first five volumes of Something Is KIlling The Children, but I feel like I haven't found the right balance for my free time yet.

daily Irish practice on duolingo (after creating yet again a review plan to go alongside the units I have not worked on yet. Because of course right after I was done with my big review they changed everything and now everything looks different and there is some vocab I never worked on)

listened and wrote notes for a lecture of my power practices and men theories class

finished reading and highlighting the article I had to read about The Merchant Of Venice

updated my reading journal

worked on a series of future bookish posts

continued listening to the mistholme museum podcast (which I am really enjoying! I found out about it quite randomly because it was recommended to me on spotify, but now I am really invested in it)

packed my backpack for class tomorrow and picked out an outfit already (being nice to future me so they won't have to worry about it tomorrow)

What are those apps you usually post in your productivity updates?

hi! here's a breakdown of apps i use, as well as websites and other resources i've used/use for my learning (mainly chinese, though some of these resources can be used for other languages as well).

apps i use every day:

dot languages: this is a chinese-specific app where you select your hsk level, and then read articles at that level. there's a pop-up dictionary, an option to show pinyin, post-article vocab practice (audio, matching, translation, and writing), and the option to have your articles either in simplified or traditional.

TOFU learn: a blend between flashcards and writing, you can find decks for various things, including hsk level-specific decks, and you learn new vocab with the stroke order and then write each new term three times—once with an overlay (so the term is visible), and then two times from memory. there's also a review function, which helps you practice terms you've already learnt, and each term has audio that goes with it. i use it for chinese, but there's decks for esperanto, french, german, italian, japanese, korean, norweigian, portuguese, russian, spanish, swedish, and turkish.

the pleco dictionary app: my favourite chinese dictionary app; allows you to translate from english to chinese or chinese to english, has options for writing, radical, vocal, and keyboard entry, and has both traditional and simplified characters.

ankiapp: this one's not particularly complicated; it's a flashcard app, where you can make your own decks or download decks other people have made. it uses a spaced repetition system to help you remember terms—you rate yourself from worst to best on how well you remembered the term, and that determines how many times it'll pop up afterwards. it also gives you an overall grade for each deck, which is a nice way to measure your progress.

duolingo: probably my least favourite of all of the apps i use; the chinese course isn't the best, and now that they've removed the notes/grammar information option, there's no way for people who aren't already fairly familiar with the language and its inner workings to learn them if they exclusively use duolingo. it's okay for maintenance practice, though, but i'm already almost finished with the entire course and i would say it barely reaches to lower hsk 4, so i wouldn't say it's a good tool if you're more advanced.

apps i have but use less often:

readibu: this is sort of like dot in that it's an app for reading in chinese with a pop-up dictionary. however, that's where the similarities end; readibu has novels, short stories, and articles aimed at children, and each of those are further split into genres. readibu also lets you add your own web-pages and read them on the app, so you can use its pop-up dictionary with them. it's aimed more to intermediate and upper intermediate learners, with hsk levels ranging from hsk 4 to hsk 6. the only reason i rate dot above readibu is because dot has a larger range of levels (hsk 1 through hsk 6 i believe? but it may go higher) and exercises built in to help you learn the vocab.

the chairman's bao: also a chinese reading app, though if you use the free version, you only get one sample article per hsk level (hsk 1 - hsk 6). i believe that every so often you get a new sample article for each level, but i'm not sure what the interval on that is. it also has a pop-up dictionary and a flashcard option for saved vocab.

du chinese: another chinese reading app; it has articles divided into newbie through master (six levels in total, though they don't line up perfectly with the hsk in my experience), and new articles are free for a certain period of time before becoming locked behind a paywall. there's a pop-up dictionary and a vocab review/test option for vocab you save.

memrise: flashcards with audio, depending on whether you're using an official course or a user-generated deck. decent, but it can get repetitive.

hellotalk: not exclusively chinese, but i believe it started off mainly aimed that way. you set your language, and then your target language, and then you can talk to native speakers who have your language as their target language. potentially incredibly useful, but if you're like me and extremely introverted you may have a hard time using this app, since it requires a lot of one-on-one interaction.

slowly: i haven't actually gotten around to using this, but it's sort of like a digital penpal app, as i understand it. you can learn more about it here.

websites and other miscellanea:

the integrated chinese textbooks by cheng and tsui, which are the textbooks i use for self-study—there's textbooks and workbooks, as well as character workbooks (though these can easily be cut out without suffering from the loss).

mandarinbean: graded readers, hsk 1 - hsk 6, with a pop-up dictionary and the option to read in traditional or simplified

chinese reading practice: reading, beginner through advanced (three levels), with a pop-up dictionary and some additional notes included on vocab and language-specific things non-native speakers might struggle with or not know.

hsk reading: graded readers, hsk 1 - hsk 6, divided into three sections (beginner, intermediate, advanced). does not have a pop-up dictionary, but does have an option to translate the text, post-reading quizzes, and notes on important vocab with example sentences.

my chinese reading: reading from beginner to advanced (four levels); has a pop-up dictionary, the option to play an audio recording of the passage you're reading, notes on key words, things that are difficult to translate, grammar, and post-reading comprehension questions.

the heavenly path notion website, which i would say is one of the best resources i've ever found, with a massive number of guides, lists of chinese media in a variety of forms, and general resources.

chinese character stroke order dictionary: what it says on the tin; will show you the stroke order for a given character.

hanzigrids: allows you to generate your own character worksheets. i use this very frequently, and can recommend it. the only downside is if you want to create multiple pages at once, you have to pay; however this can easily be circumnavigated by creating only one sheet at a time. you can download the sheet as a pdf and print it out for personal use.

21st century chinese poety: a resource i only came across recently; has a massive collection of contemporary chinese poetry, including translations; much more approachable than classical poetry, which can often be incredibly dense and hard to parse due to the writing style.

zhongwen pop-up dictionary: if you're reading something in chinese on a website that doesn't have a pop-up dictionary, this is a must. i've never encountered any words that it doesn't have a translation for so far, including colloquialisms/slang. i use it to read webnovels, and it's been a fantastic tool. you can also save vocab by hitting the r key when you're hovering over a word/phrase, making it easy to go back and add terms to your flashcard deck(s).

chinese reading world: a website put together by the university of iowa; split into three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), with thirty units per level, and ten modules per unit, as well as multiple proficiency tests per level. each module is split into three parts: a pre-reading vocab quiz, the reading with a number of comprehension questions based on it, and a post-vocab reading quiz. it also rates you in relation to someone with a native proficiency based on how quickly you read and answer the comprehension questions, and how many vocab questions you get right.

jiaoyu baike: an extensive chinese-to-chinese dictionary, put out by the taiwanese ministry of education. you can find an extensive write-up on it here, by @linghxr.

qianpian: another chinese-to-chinese dictionary; @ruhua-langblr has a write-up on it here.

tv/film: youtube is a great place to find chinese tv shows and films, and they often have english subtitles. if you can't find something on there, though, you can probably find it either on iqiyi or asianvote, which have both chinese and other asian shows and films (though you'll want an adblock if you're going to use the latter). i use these a lot to watch things, and have discovered a lot of media through these, and then novels through those when i went searching to see what they were adapted from.

polylogger: a website for logging the amount of time/type of language study you do. has a wide variety of languages, and the option to follow other people. still, it's a fairly basic site.

hello i have a question about learning korean ^^

i started ( self ) studying it about two years ago but discontinued due to college and all, but now i want to pick it up again and i don't know where to start from? i know how to read and write, but i have issues reading in one go— basically i lack fluency in reading and i often stutter. is there any way to improve?

secondly, i do know some basic stuff however my vocabulary isn't vast enough. besides, i would like to understand the sentence structure, or how they write phrases and sentences since it's very different from english. i've referred to so many sites but there's always a question— do i work on vocabulary first or sentence / phrasing structure first? or do i study both of them along side?

this sounds like such a mess and it is because i'm so lost ┬┬﹏┬┬ my main goal is to understand korean shows without subtitles and i do pick up a few words and phrases here and there but there's a lot still left to learn and idk where to start from. moreover, i've noticed that the textbook korean and the one that's spoken in everyday life is way different ( this applies to almost all the languages tbh ) and i'm having a bit of a trouble trying to figure out how a native would say it?

or example, do this thing where i come up with a sentence and try to translate it just to check what it would be in korean and check in the translator to see if i'm right, and most of the time im not. whether it's about the formalities or the conjugations. basically a whole lot of issues so please if u can help ＞︿＜

Hello! If your goal is to be able to understand Korean content without subtitles, then I think self-studying grammar and vocabulary is a good idea. I know you said you already have some knowledge of Korean, so I would refer to my masterlist and start from wherever you feel appropriate. I also recommend diversifying your study material and looking at other resources on Tumblr, YouTube, and on the Internet elsewhere. There's a lot out there!

As for your second question, I think it makes more sense to study vocab and grammar at the same time. As I've said before in previous asks, I was never that disciplined with my studying, so I can't really give you concrete study techniques. I think I got where I am today by regular exposure (on top of taking Korean courses and studying abroad lol). But if you don't have those opportunities, using whatever resources on the Internet can get you far. As you get comfortable with both grammar and vocab, I recommend exposing yourself to content like webtoons in Korean and K-dramas. These will help you with your reading and listening comprehension. There are plenty of webtoons at varying levels of difficulty, and K-drama actors have clear diction that is easy to understand. Again, I don't exactly have concrete techniques for how to eventually ween yourself off of subtitles/translations (since I myself still use them), but in my experience, exposure alone is enough to at least allow me to read webtoons and watch K-dramas without relying super heavily on the translations. Consuming this content will also teach you how natural Korean is spoken by natives. I hope that makes sense!

If you're concerned about speaking, the best way to get better is to converse with others. You might not know other people who speak Korean, but you can still practice with others for free on Hilokal, where I used to teach live lessons. It's a nice, low-pressure environment that can help you get more comfortable with speaking and learn alongside other people just like you!

Also, I generally don't recommend using translators to help you learn a language, especially if you're an English speaker learning Korean. It's more useful for you to understand the meaning of the Korean itself than it is for you to get the perfect translation. Korean is especially difficult to translate into English (in my opinion), so a translator might not give you a clean, accurate, and natural translation. Unfortunately, I can't think of other ways to fact-check your sentences otherwise lol. But I think that looking at enough sample sentences will help you become better at constructing your own. And something that helped me feel more comfortable writing and speaking when I was abroad is that, even if I make minor mistakes, chances are that other people can still understand me. Maybe keeping that in mind can make the learning process a little less stressful :)

hi!! where did you learn Japanese? 🥺 ive only just started so im trying to improve as i go. any tips?

hello! so, i self-studied for about 8 months before i started studying it at university!

my tips are!

-learn hiragana and katakana make sure they’re solid! probably take about 3 weeks! but you might’ve already learnt them.

-increase input of the language! so watch and listen to more japanese, music etc. when i first started studying i would play this city pop playlist and this one, so now whenever i play it i can focus on japanese and study cos my brain is used to hearing it when studying it if that makes sense!

-i used memrise for a few months but Duolingo is good too, just to slowly implement the language before learning any grammar! in this time i suggest starting to learn some light vocab, like Quizlet>> N5 japanese vocabulary.

- to start learning grammar i started with the app, tae kim’s guide to japanese and then some minna no nigongo books, i also used an italki tutor for a few months (quite cheap language teacher online over video call).

- my other tips are make sheets of basic things like hello, how are you, the weather is nice etc, i feel like it really helps you get used to the basic structure of sentences and i felt like memrise was really good at this and that’s why i suggest using it over Duolingo because it teaches you things like “he likes books etc.” “cherry blossoms are pretty etc etc.”

- then when you’re feeling good with the basics start with some kanji! i was lucky enough to study japanese in lockdown where I could study 2-4 hours a day.

i will now show you all the resources i used like apps and books!

-best app for learning katakana and kanji!

-the Japanese app is great and I still use it now! so, i input kanji I’ve learnt onto a list and you can study it in flash cards! i even have a list for words and phrases i hear in anime and dramas and films, and interesting dictionary sentence examples.

-the grammar guide i used loosely at first and the vocab stack i used!

- the yellow textbook is the most important bc it has the grammar summarised

No but i was thinking what are your thoughts on Neige being given nicknames in different languages (like how Casper calls him Zima ect.)? Bc ive been thinking about possible Neige nicknames in my native language (latvian!) And its been quite fun!

I even have some ideas:

- Ziema (means winter and is already very close to Zima so not really that unique)

- Sniegs (means snow and sounds pretty nice, can be turned into a pet name "sniedziņš" lol)

- Ledus (means ice and sounds very cold and brutal, doesnt exactly fit the character but still good)

- Sals (it means like frost or frostbite im pretty sure, sounds nice tho)

So yeah from now on i will be reffering to Neige as sniedziņš sometimes and no one can stop me.

(Also i love love love how you bring other languages into the podcast i speak literally no french but its nice to see it used so casually and just aagghhh its amazing <3. I love the representation of languages XD)

I am glad you are having fun gnawing on this prehistoric boy. And yeah!! So, without getting too much into canon, anything wintery or cold themed is an appropriate thing to call Neige, based on the conventions used to name him elsewhere. It's all based on the 'cold' reputation of his blood.

I LOVE the idea of nicknaming him something to do with frostbite, bc he DOES bite, it's a very important thing about him. He's a lover and a biter. No bark, all bite, and so on and so forth.

Anyway YES you are absolutely right in the way you're nicknaming him!!

I really love playing with languages. English is my first language, Welsh is my second, and I also speak a handful of French and Russian. I also know a little grab-bag of words in Italian and Spanish, but not much, and a few words here and there of Czech, but like. VERY scant. Like I know stray bits of vocab, and that is all.

Languages are so fun, I love how they work and relate to each other, I love how when you start learning a new language it's like 'oh the whole way I think about using words is not the default, there are other structures, other systems, different ways to communicate about these objects and this world'. I love how languages are alive and fluid and they borrow and share and steal and give and change and exchange. I love how it's all about connecting with other people and even when the language barrier is a wall, eventually you will find a way to speak with each other, because that's what people do.

Since you asked nicely. :) Here's everyone's voice claims I got for my OC's in one video!

Sorry I had to post one hefty video and not four separate ones! Tumblr can't let me do that.

Some more details about the voice claims under the read more! Because I love voice claim stuff and I am a rambling mess about it.

ISO is the only character I for sure have one voice claim for as of right now and that's Ashley Johnson. The most spot on comparison is definitely Lake from Infinity Train. Checks off all the right marks from the slight metallic sound in her voice to a lot of personality and characterization bits that I can see in ISO. Picked some extra juicy voice lines in this video that hit almost too hard with how relevant they are to their character. :') Wanted to pick some lines from Pike and Terra too since both of them have lines that I could see ISO saying as well!

I already posted Chopper's voice claim video and a little explanation earlier, but I recently updated it to include one more voice I had in mind! Essentially, Jesse Harnell is perfect for an overall smooth and humorous tone while Lance Henrikson is someone I can see for Chopper if I want him to be more intimidating.

Last one I cannot for the life of me find the name of the voice actor since it's from old video game material (cast is listed, but they don't say who voices who), but I really wanted to include it since this character and his overall theme and voice were someone I looked to for inspiration for Chopper!

Spark L was both tricky and fun for me! Being a pop star meant I also needed to find someone with a singing voice, so her reel is a smidge longer than the other ones here. :')

Nikki Simmons was the first actress that came to mind since her role in NSR is a really nice comparison to both Spark L's bubbly personality and singing voice. Buuuut. Part of me also says this kind of voice is both too on the nose and has too much energy. I wanted roles that sounded more natural in tone so I snagged some voice lines from Brenda Song and Kody Kavitha!

I'm started to lean more and more towards Brenda Song for Spark L since a lot of her sassy and enthusiastic energy are perfect for Spark L! Also I don't have any lines here, but an extra bonus to Brenda Song is her role as London Tipton because a lot of her lines are way too fitting for this girl. :]

Kody Kavitha is another I look to because her fast and peppy performance is also perfect for Spark L's personality!

Claw Jaw's voice situation is REALLY similar to Spark L's. All three voices I picked for him are all tones and deliveries I can picture for him!

Patrick Seitz was a voice claim I had in mind for the longest time when it came to CJ since he's got a really good guttural voice in a lot of his roles. I could have picked many others that he's done, but I went with Bluddflagg since his tone and use of that fun, pirate vocab are nice things to look to for CJ! Like Spark L's first voice though, I was afraid this was too much energy so I looked to two other roles to be on the safe side.

I'm debating whether or not I want to give Claw Jaw an accent, so in case he doesn't (or at least if it isn't as heavy), Clancy Brown is a nice voice to turn to! He's still got the perfect energy and deliveries for CJ when it comes to both a goofy character but also a tough sounding voice.

Grog is a character I really looked at when getting CJ's energy pinpointed, so I had to include Travis Willingham. Like Clancy Brown, a combo of silliness and seriousness is perfect for the guy!

Hi! Sorry if you dont answer this kinda question and feel free to delete if you dont wanna answer but how would one go about learning Chinese? Are there any tips or sources you could direct to? I want to surprise my dad one day by learning Chinese since I grew up without learning it (been Americanized 😔) but I have no idea where to start at all. I would greatly appreciate the help if you provide any.

I'm not reaaally a good person to ask since I'm not truly actively pursuing language studies. You'd be better off searching up language resources/communities or looking for Chinese langblrs tbh. I think they'll probably have a lot more actual learning resources that you can check out. If you're real serious, I'd look up getting into HSK levels (standardised testing levels basically)

However, my general advice is to probably just immerse yourself more if you're already a little bit familiar with Chinese. It sounds like your parents or at least your dad is Chinese, so you must know a little bit already. I've said as much in previous asks before, but my current Chinese language skills are basically all from just getting more into watching dramas/movies/web videos (like douyins) over the last ~2 years. Personally, my listening skills are still better than speaking/reading, but I used to be practically illiterate and now I can indulge more in my love of reading comment sections and forum drama lol.

There's tons of drama/movie recs out there including from me (check my FAQ/answered asks) so I won't bother with that here.

Everything I link below is just going to be based on my own experience/some resources I use/have used. Idk how helpful it will be to what you're trying to achieve.

If your goal is only to get better at speaking Chinese, I'd say learning songs might help? Or just when you're watching any language videos, repeating things out loud helps. I also just mutter out loud to myself anytime I find myself thinking in Chinese these days, since I don't really talk to anybody but I still want to improve my speaking skills.

Video channels:

The Mandarin Corner - a language youtube channel has varying levels language videos on various topics as well as vocab.

每日中文课Free To Learn is also a nice language youtube channel, though it may be a little bit more intermediate learning. 唐真探【唐唐說-每週更新】- True crime channel in Chinese. If you have interest in true crime, I think watching ones in Chinese are interesting because they offer more diverse case coverage, including cases from China and other Asian countries that you typically just don't find in western true crime channels. Subtitles are in Traditional so if you're like me, you'll probably rely mostly on listening. I think these channels also help me learn some modern vocab. 英大吉來了 - another true crime channel in Chinese. Subtitles are in Traditional. 脑弟说电影 - movie/drama recap channel in Chinese. Subtitles are in Simplified.

Some apps that might be helpful (based on my experience only):

Mobile:

Pleco - a Chinese-English dictionary). I would install a Chinese pinyin keyboard and handwriting keyboard on your phone in order to look up words or phrases. A similiar app I've heard people talk about before is called Anki, I think?

HelloChinese - This can take you up to HSK 4 or something like that for free. It's better than DuoLingo, I hear. I haven't actually used DuoLingo before but I'm told their Chinese program is a little bullshit. I used to use HelloChinese reading/writing practice on and off but since I'm not interested in paying for stuff, I don't really use it anymore. However, I think the practices that are available are pretty good and the example sentences and whatnot actually make sense.

Desktop:

Zhongwen pop-up dictionary - browser extension. This is pretty useful extension that lets you look up words by hovering over them (unless it does that thing where it just tells you to look up a different entry 🙄). When I encounter words I don't know while reading, I'll turn this on.

Yellowbridge - an online Chinese-English dictionary. I honestly just use this to double check brush stroke orders sometimes but it's a good dictionary for desktop.

Again, probably not that helpful but that's all I really have personally!

Let's Learn Natively (TL :Japanese) | Reading

Why it's important to read as much native materials as you possibly can in your target language and where/how to start.

※ When learners first embark on their journey of picking up a new language, the first thing we do is familiarize ourselves with the alphabet, pronunciation, and other important innerworkings on the language. With Japanese, the first step is to learn hiragana and katakana. A lot of people stop in the middle of that because they feel that it's not worth learning the language if they have to learn that many letters. But what if you've made it past that point? Where do you go from there? Of course, we move on to basic grammar and sentence structure so that you can begin to understand why sentences are formed the way that they are. (and, of course, vocab words).

※ However, while textbooks and workbooks do teach us the way that sentences are formed, it's stiff. Of course, the purpose behind that is to make sure that you understand the basics before you move on to more native/nuanced versions of the structures. Rex is def Ahsoka's wingman and covers for her much like he does for Anakin. Poor man has a notebook full of excuses for them. But he adores their relationship and is happy Ahsoka could find solace in someone during a miserable war.

Gree loves how Barriss seems looser and more relaxed when Ahsoka is around so he is all for it and gives Barriss all the tips for the best places in town to take a lady out.

13. Who is more likely to give the "shovel talk," Luminara or Anakin and how?

Oh def Luminara. Anakin doesn't care enough to. Luminara however, knows how deeply Barriss feels and what it takes for her to open up to someone so she absolutely will want to make sure her girl is safe.

She would do it inviting Ahsoka to her room to "have a cup of tea" (Headcanon that the Jedi who know Luminara well know that the cup of tea means a beat down). She would use plenty of high vocab and innuendo for what she would do to a person who makes Barriss cry.

18. How would Ahsoka express her affection to Barriss?

I feel like Ahsoka would be very physical so she would love touching Barriss's hair, playing with it, learning to style it. She's a big cuddler and whine if Barriss gets too far away in bed.

She'd also love doing tasks like fixing, building, running errands, driving the speeder, etc. cuz she is THAT dyke.

In my and @jedimasterbailey's headcanon, Luminara loves speeder bikes. Ahsoka loves tinkering so naturally they basically car gals together and Barriss gets so bored when they nerd out over this.

I do think their bond started with Cloak of Darkness though even before Barriss.

33. What do the other Jedi think of their relationship?

Yoda would ADORE them together and non stop affectionately troll them. Plo Koon is happy that Ahsoka found someone to calm her restless spirit. Mace is glad the Luminous Lineage may tame the Disaster Lineage. Obi Wan at first is confused and worries about the two girls in a war situation and how that could affect them but in the supportive protective dad way.

45. Share your Barrissoka headcanon.

Ok so not a unique one I'm sure but I have this headcanon that it's Barriss who gives Ahsoka her diamond choker she wears in her second Clone Wars outfit and even though she doesn't wear it anymore, she kept it or maybe used it to make her new white lightsabers back when she didn't know if Barriss survived Order 66 as a way to comfort herself.

@eirenical I looked up gyadl difficulty ToT. Looks like it IS same difficulty level to dmbj. Though I'd personally add that it being a romance makes it slightly easier, since romance genre stuff is typically always more words that are learned earlier (daily life and I like X I hate X words tend to be earlier words learners focus on). Dmbj has very few unique words per chapter (~2000 hanzi per chapter but usually only ~500 unique hanzi per chapter) which makes it less daunting to read with click-dictionary word lookup just because it has more limited unique words per section.

Granting You a Dreamlike Life novel is 1.922 in zhtoolkit for difficulty rating. Smaller number is harder, bigger number is easier. So 1.5 is hard, 2.0 is easy. This puts gyadl closer to the easy range.

Dmbj is also on the easier side, chapters usually falling into the 1.9 range.

Stories like 小王子 are 2.0, which are doable to extensively read in 1-2 years and read with a click-dictionary tool (like Pleco, Readibu, Mandarinspot.com, Zhongwen Chrome extension etc) in under 1 year. (In this comparison I'm using 1 year to mean about ~2000 common words learned and maybe 1200-1500 hanzi recognized since that was my level at the time, so around HSK 4 level knowledge).

So dmbj and gyadl would be doable to read with a click dictionary at the end of study year 1 to the beginning of study year 2. Readable extensively at year 3 or a bit before (this was just my personal experience). ALSO worth noting: gyadl is mainly romance genre, which significantly lowers its reading difficulty as romance genre tends toward more romance and daily life oriented conversations. The drama gyadl was watchable without English subtitles or word lookup in about 6 months of learning for me (so around ~1000 words I at least recognized and ~500 hanzi I at least recognized), I think partly that was because it's romance genre and those tend to be easier to follow. Dmbj is action horror, so it's difficulty depends on how familiar one already is with those genres common words... if you watch/read other Chinese horror action then the vocabulary will be less of a hurdle, if it's a new genre for you then initially there will be a new genre vocab chunk to learn before it gets easier. (Similar with SVSSS which is also around 1.9, and has an initial difficulty spike due to xianxia and transmigration genre words then eases in difficulty).

Today is going to be difficult but I am going to be difficulter!

I was not super productive over the weekend, so I had a lot of homework that spilled over into this week.

H's dogs woke me up at 6 am yesterday, so I had a bad headache yesterday afternoon so I did the barest of minimums yesterday night.

The power went out.

I don't know where the flashlights are.

I got to feed the dogs in the dark.

My breakfast was a glass of milk and a single strawberry, because I couldn't cook.

I have an extra long Greek translation assignment and my usual preferred lexicon is already in use.

I haven't started my Greek vocab study and we have a quiz today.

I haven't started watching the Hebrew lectures and I have homework due tomorrow morning.

I have a chapter writeup due for 2nd Temple lit at 5 pm.

I haven't done any work on my research job or prep for my term paper yet this week.

Okay, I think that's everything I have to complain about right now! Some nice things:

Greek is actually my favorite class and the material for today is enjoyable.

Because I can't cook right now, I have the perfect excuse to go to a restaurant today.

KTAW | DAY 3 – DIPLOMAT/POLYGLOT

Tagging @kiaratheronappreciationweek, @lizzybeth1986, and @sazanes for KTAW.

For this day, I'd like to focus on my headcanons for how Kiara acquires her diplomatic and language skills. Obviously, she has a good starting point, being the daughter of a diplomat and being at least bilingual by birth in canon. But her brother Ezekiel is also both these things, and his talents lie in veterinary medicine.

The key to Kiara understanding all the knowledge she has at her fingertips is a personal knowledge management system. I think her system is set up into four main parts: her book organization system, her reading journal, her language notebooks, and her commonplace book. Yes, it's about to get very nerdy in here.

We know from that really unnecessary scene in TRR 2.17 where Drake and MC can invade Kiara's privacy and prank her, that she canonically has a book organization system and owns at least one book on Macedonian history and one on Belarusian history. She has way more. She's rich, she can afford to have a history book on basically every country in the world. Her books are organized using a paired down version of the Universal Decimal Classification because its system was designed to be used internationally and has been translated into many different languages. What's unique to Kiara is that she often has multiple translations of the same text to compare and contrast how they feel. After all, translation is an art, not a science. Post her marriage to fellow book lover Hana Lee, the two of them make home library checkout cards and stamps to keep track of which estate a book is in and to make reading more fun for their kids.

Kiara has her books, but how is she going to process all the information she reads? With a reading journal of course. Kiara strikes me as an A5 notebook type girl. Any bigger and it would be cumbersome to take with her while traveling. In the notebook goes what she wants to read, what she has read, and her thoughts and analysis. Her journal is very minimalist, typically black, and she favors a nice black ballpoint pen. Her handwriting is immaculate.

Kiara has a separate notebook for language learning. Each language gets a notebook, even ones she's already fluent in. She never knows when she might come across a phrase or a grammatical convention she's never seen or heard before. Linguistics is very close to her heart. These notebooks are a little more colorful. She likes to get custom notebooks that have an untranslatable phrase from the language she's learning on the front. Inside are exercises, vocab lists, study schedules, and travel plans so she can practice with other people.

And finally we have Kiara's commonplace book. She got this idea from Hakim and Joëlle, who always have a quote handy for any situation. This notebook has seen the most changes, as Kiara's kept one since she was small. It started out as a small lined notebook, but by now has transformed into a traveler's notebook style leather cover with three paper inserts inside. What quotes go in which inserts are known only to her.

Im currently just memorizing da basics; hiragana and katakana before i continue off where i left off in grammar and vocab (i'll most likely start over since its been arounf half a year and i have goldfish memory 🥲) Ive already memorized hiragana, now im going with katakana but im focusing on art lately since i just got my stylus back so im prob not gonna do it for awhile but i'll try to before may >:DD I currently only use 'Write it Japanese!' app on mobile, its REALLY useful, idk anything to help with grammar but my jp speaking friend recommends da book 'Minna no nihongo'. She used to be my jp study buddy but shes been VERY busy with uni lately so :'''D AND YES BBG (can i call u dat??) I think I’ve already made this post but growing up androgyny in characters and people made me just assume that gender and gender roles are something you can mess with from the get go.

I heard about gay and lesbian before I heard about transness- well by that term. See I remember in elementary school I wasent homophobic persea but I was more confused why there was a need for a difference between gay and lesbian. Also I treated “homo” basically like a slur but like a few notches less. I never called anyone it but in my head I liked how it sounded but was like “sadly the word can’t be used it’s a shame it’s a nice word” and I thought it was fascinating in my dyslexic mind that it felt similar to “hobo”.

But back to my original idea, androgyny I thought was the coolest thing ever, but in my young mind this was all kinds of gender queer concepts and outside concepts. Like in my head I associate this one veggie tales character who wasent given a name as not being androgynous but being unique.

One character I remember very strongly about is

Doris from shrek, I don’t remember thinking “this Isant a girl it’s just some dude” but I also didn’t think “this is just a manly women” or “this is someone who transitioned to being more feminine”

Instead my head interpreted basically her as being bigender, and I know this because the term I came up with for her was “he she” now I was 5 and I didn’t like the other term I heard her be called “hermaphodite” so see I came up with that by using what little vocab I had in 2005 or whatever

Honestly I remember hearing “herm-“ a lot but I don’t remember why. Then agian I’m talking about the 2000s

Some other things that I group in here is just general ‘breaking of gender roles’ Tom boys, female actors playing boys, and just designs that I couldn’t tell their gender

I still can’t tell you if charlie is a boy or a girl they just are chill.

Weirdly lily from Hannah Montana is strangely just the textbook example of a tomboy….weirdly I want to say I saw her as a lesbian but I don’t remember

I growing up only got a little exposure to sonic and so to me tails was just this genderless character to me and it made me think they were the coolest

Weirdly also junior from veggie tales like that boy I swear was a girl and that’s really probably because they make female vas to child voices, same as tails. It’s a hard voice to do, but when I’m little it just drew me in since I saw them as androgynous

Also in shrek 2 there is dialogue that confirms that Doris is trans
