old man chowder loves fishing (feeding his fish), blowing bubbles on his pipe, and taking care of rare plants. he needs a little morning tea to help him become less sleepy. 💤

Photographer Willis Chung was at Yellowstone, when he had an unusual encounter with a bison he was photographing. After snapping the Bison enjoying a dust bath the bull suddenly turned and charges directly at Willis, who snapped one quick picture and ran like hell!

The bull stops looking for Mr. Chung and seems to be thinking...

What'cha runnin' for Willis? I'm ready for my close-up.
Tumblr media
Shit, I can't believe I took a bath and fixed my hair for that...

Idk I think if you're depicting any animal semi-seriously in media the least you can do for it is to try searching for some references in a natural setting. Especially in a medium like animation, referencing behavior is just as important as physiology. Sometimes the clearest photos of a species are in a very distressing context for the animal. Some people only know certain animals for how they look/behave under extreme stress. This is why I love camera trap footage so much as reference.
What I'm saying is if you're tasked with designing and animating an otter or a fox and your only videos referencing them in motion where captive pet videos I'm gonna be disappointed
You can tell when someone's put thought and effort into their depiction of a species, no amount of rigging or polygons can create believable animal behaviour*. Like to me the aristocats is a really cute movie because despite being anthropomorphized the kittens still behave like cute kittens!!
Tumblr media
It's hard to find modern animation with great animal acting similar to Kahl's. It's either fully anthro movement or behaves like a dog, and I do think this oversaturation has some negative effects on our relationship with animals. Our society has become so based in narratives and stories and so many of our stories have misleading or fabricated beliefs about animals and how they behave
*except for that guy who made a program in C++ to simulate starling murmurations

Bison at Yellowstone National Park.
📸 by Jack Bell Photography
Bison are able to withstand extreme cold temperatures. They can tolerate temperatures as low as -50°F. During winter storms, bison will turn toward the storm, hunker down, and wait for it to pass. With thick coats and a low profile, bison can survive the same storm that would kill many domestic livestock.

Worst-written TV shows I’ve seen in my short life so far:
-Girls (HBO)
(only for a few episodes, I had raw hatred for every single character in it)
-Hannibal (NBC)
(I sat through all of that godawful AO3 fanfic -Michael Mann, Jonathan Demme, & Ridley Scott movies are superior adaptations)
-Yellowstone
(Only for a few episodes, mighty Christ, how I hate the Dutton family except for their abused lawyer/ slave)
-Death Note
(the first show I regretted watching as I got older, not a single likable or interesting character in there- kill em all)
-American Horror Story after HOTEL
(only the teasers & intros are good after that)
Shows like Velma & Big Mouth were way too obvious- those shows are so bad that it’s not even worth making fun of ‘em.
…Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel are on the thinnest ice you can imagine.
Watch Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Fargo (the movie & the show), The Sopranos, True Detective (seasons 1 & 4), I Think You Should Leave, The Boys, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Cuphead Show, & The Regular Show instead.

“Snow bison”
Location: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA
“Max Waugh catches sight of a plains bison kicking up flurries of snow over its bulky frame.
From his vehicle, Max saw the bison start to head downhill towards the road, gathering momentum, and he drew up to give them space to cross. Max framed the bison tightly to create this original composition. Once abundant and wide-ranging across most of North America, bison were hunted to near extinction by the late 1800s. Numbers are slowly increasing, but they are confined to discrete populations, dependent on conservation management and constrained by land-use changes and land ownership.”
by Max Waugh, USA.
