01 | on teaching. lon'qu doesn't think of himself as a teacher and he knows he is not well-suited to be one. he prefers to defer to the instruction and direction of others and to teach as few students as possible. though this is partly motivated by the fact that he does have a general aversion to large groups of people and to female students in particular, it's also because he is conscious of his own shortcomings as a teacher. that is to say, his method of instruction is not one that suits the temperaments of most people and he knows it.
i'm just going to list some details of what his classes are typically like just in case you need know only for flavor, but further explanations are included beneath the cut!
his classes are small and quiet. very show, don't tell. instructs without speaking aloud most of the time. classes start with a line-up, in which lon'qu will swing a training sword against his students and see if they've learned how to defend themselves adequately. ( not a full-fledged sparring match, brief. ) prone to dismissing people if he does not feel they have adequately improved. has a very individualized approach to teaching. will not move onto the next lesson with a student he does not feel is prepared enough. doesn’t repeat himself.
lon'qu describes himself as inexperienced, "raw" in comparison to basilio in his b support with m!robin and doesn't think highly of his skill, though he knows he is more capable than the average sellsword. ( which, you'd have to be, given he was the champion of the west khan for a time! ) certainly more capable than the literal children he's been entrusted with, too. but, i don't think he really thinks he's better than any of the other instructors. in fact, i'm inclined to say he thinks he's the weakest of them — both, in teaching and in mettle.
lon'qu's likely never received formal instruction on how to fight given his background and picked up the tricks of the trade through experience alone. because of that, i think that carries over into the way he teaches. he obviously isn't someone who's very chatty and though i've written him to be particularly impatient with people who ask him theory questions or the differences between combat styles, the truth is he wouldn't know how to explain them even if he tried to.
his method of teaching is very action-oriented, i think.
he's learned through watching and repetition, not through thought-out discussions on the differences and semantics between things. i think he has a rudimentary understanding of differing combat styles and gambits that people play in battle, but he wouldn't really know how to place a name to them. he's very show, don't tell in the way that he teaches, so most of his classes are fairly quiet with the exception of clashing swords. it's important to know that lon'qu is constantly learning while in combat, a trait that he hopes to impress upon his students.
he is always watching his opponents to see how they move, their tics and works to make sense of that in a way that he knows how to respond all while in the midst of a battle. he's learning about his students, from his students as they move, rather than hearing them list off what they think are their strengths and weaknesses. this is important to understand why it is that he teaches the way he does. he expects his students to slowly pick up that he is doing this through their observations and try to do the same without him ever mentioning it because to him, it won’t matter if you know all the names and terms if you can’t put them into action. and given the fluidity of battle, you have to be able to change at the drop of a hat.
his classes are small because he has a very individualized approach to instruction. again in robin's support, he says, 'strength is everything [in regna ferox]. weakness is weeded out and eliminated.' i don’t think he’s cruel enough to tell someone to get the fuck out of his class or anything because he thinks they’re weak, but i think he’s of the mind that if he feels a student isn't at an adequate level to move to the next step/lesson, he just won't teach them. he'll wait until they've learned what they did wrong and correct it because it’ll make them stronger.
all this said and done and even with good intentions, it's quite difficult to want to put up with lon'qu as an instructor when there are so many other options available which i think he realizes. he's not nice and tends to come off as impatient or rude because it’s not like he goes out of his way to explain how he thinks nor is he ever going to feel the need to defend himself. patience is a virtue, but if you're willing to put in the work with him then he's willing to teach. or at least try.
( the good news is that he's learning slowly that you can't always teach this way. now, if only someone could teach him how to read. )

A : AFFECTION. how does your muse show affection?
valentine's day asks.
08 | on affection. lon'qu shows his affection in the things he does for people or in his criticism, lmao. he isn't great with his words and usually bungles it when he tries to be affectionate. he's even worse with pda. like, he'll debate it, then decide it's stupid and then back out. or more embarrassingly, he'll end up half-executing it and then chicken out halfway through so he'd rather just not do it all together knowing what he does know. ( it's worse with any woman because he'll be 10000% more likely to just not even look at you. )
he's not outwardly affectionate intentionally, but he will make a point to go out of his way to do certain things for you that he otherwise wouldn't bother to with other people. like, he'll save you an extra slice of cake or something even though he hates sweets. he'll let you borrow his coat or help you step over a puddle or the like. i do think, also, that he can show his affection through his words if he isn't consciously thinking about it.
exhibit a, in his future past 2 dialogue with inigo:
LON'QU: ......INIGO: Father? Is that you? But...how can you be here? You're dead... Oh no... You've come from the afterlife to collect me, haven't you? I'm finished.LON'QU: ...Finished, you say? If you're that ready to die, I won't bother with any speeches.INIGO: Huh?LON'QU: Inigo... I sentence you to death here and now... Prepare to die.INIGO: Ack! Wait!LON'QU: What's the matter? Come at me. I'll make it painless for you.INIGO: But... I don't want to die...LON'QU: You don't? ...Then don't let me ever hear you say you're "finished." If the afterlife sends someone to collect you, you put that messenger in the ground.
lon'qu speaks similarly with his other potential children. ( i'm quite fond of his dialogue with owain, particularly this line: if you want to keep your friends safe, then fight. live to keep defending them. look at what happened to your father. he died to save you. but he also lost his chance to ever save you again. ) he's not critical aimlessly, but he's also not going to let you put yourself down or give up because the going gets tough / beat around the bush really either. i think he's very much like that in normal contexts as well.
in that, he won't let you talk yourself down or talk in possibilities like they're definites. he's very roundabout, essentially. but, tl;dr he's basically just a very actions-oriented person because he's awkward and doesn't know how to say things straightforward when it comes to expressing concern / affection and pda makes him want to spontaneously combust.

02 | on his ducks. no, really. lon'qu is currently harboring an entire duck family at garreg mach and he will absolutely refuse to admit it. it was an accident. in saving some very small ducklings from being bowled over or trampled in any number of odd incidents that seem to always happen at the monastery, both the mother duck and her ducklings seem to have situated themselves at the fishing pond where they'll largely remain — all with the exception of eating and occasionally flying — until lon'qu happens to come into sight.
after which, they'll just waddle after him. they never appear to follow him into the dining hall or out of the immediate garden-slash-fishing pond plaza.
it doesn't help that lon'qu often absconds from said dining hall with seeds and torn greens to feed the ducks, which of course, just makes them stay longer and attach to him more.
he won't admit that he's quite fond of them, but he noticeably will be in less of a good mood ( which is saying something ) when passing through the area in the winter when the ducklings age and leave for warmer temperatures. he's named all of them and can recognize each individual duck without much difficulty. not that he ever admits this in the company of others. he will eventually probably end up taking care of more ducks when the next spring comes.
his ducks are, as follows: duckchess ( mother ), shelly ( oldest, has a nick in her beak ), yolko ( second, tail feathers always fluffed ), ducklas ( third, wobbles when waddling ), waddle ( fourth, feathers poofy all around ), mallory ( fifth, spooks easily ) and goose ( sixth, honks ).

44 and 45 baybee
excessively detailed headcanons.
07 | on religion and superstitions. there's really no indication of there being any religious baseline in chron'sin, but that's largely because of the fact it's kind of a one-off mention in a game that otherwise focuses largely on ylisse and minorly on regna ferox and plegia. for that reason, it's kind of hard to say if lon'qu really has any context to say he feels one way or another. i don't think he's particularly reverent of the dragon gods and he's seen at least one of them, but i do think he sort of holds himself accountable to the philosophic tenaments of buddhism ( or the fantasy equivalent therein ) given what we do know about chron'sin.
basic teachings are that life is inherently full of suffering and to learn how to free yourself from the conditioned existence. every action has a consequence and things are because of previous lives and conditions. by following the eight-fold path and practicing the four noble truths ( all of which are as previously stated ), the path to nirvana will reveal itself to the practioner. the eight-fold path draws back to three principles: wisdom, morality and concentration. while again, it's not really clear in awakening and buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion; i do think he reflects a lot of these beliefs.
wisdom composes two of these branches, focusing on having the right understanding and the right intention. right understanding refers to the knowledge of suffering, where that comes from and knowing how to stop it. the right intention, however, refers to being at peace with the formal rejection of ill will and the intent to be harmless. this ties into the second branch focused on morality — abstaining from lying, divisive speech, abusive speech and idle chatter. while curt, lon'qu doesn't appear to really ever lie about anything and doesn't intentionally try to hurt anyone when he does speak to them.
even when it would be more convenient to lie to people ( even about his fears at the expense of his pride ), he doesn't. that said, he doesn't abide by all those rules. the most obvious of these being that he shouldn't take lives, though i do believe he abstained from stealing and tries mostly to abide by the right rules. don't steal, try to keep an honest livelihood. beyond that, he shouldn't have corrupt motivations, avoiding greed and withdraw from useless mental qualities. he doesn't have a particularly apparent sense of justice, but he doesn't really appear to use his skills or talents to gain wealth or notoriety.
even though, he's literally the champion of the west-khan. he's just kind of like ' WELL, WHATEVER ' to it and just kind of quickly dismisses any actual troubles. he seems to view his suffering as kind of a vessel to enlightenment. if he suffers or is patient now in this life, it will eventually end if he continues moving forward.
as far as superstitions, i think he doesn't particularly have many since buddhism similarly rejects it by nature. did y'all need a quick run-by lesson on buddhism? no, but i occasionally like to flex what little i learned from sunday school at temples. this all said and done, i don't think he thinks much about this like actively. lon'qu only lived in chron'sin for his childhood before he eventually fled following ke'ri's death.
but, i think he would have had these basic principles indoctrinated on him. he was allegedly a homeless child from the slums and most temples will offer aid to the poor, so i think the monks would have impressed these teachings upon him though he doesn't actively register that he has. i also feel this probably shaped his food palate, given the food offered at temples are similarly plain or leans sweet in its taste.

ways your muse says i love you. :3c
character headcanons!
03 | on expression of love and lack thereof. It'll come as no surprise to anyone that Lon'qu is not the most expressive person in the world when it comes to expressing his feelings. Good or bad, it doesn't come easily to him and part of that is just because he's unused to it. That isn't to say that he doesn't care or can't experience love. Just that he's clumsy. Lon'qu's kind of a 'sugar does not help make the medicine go down' kinda guy. He often sounds critical, condescending even, but it comes from a place of expectation.
He expects the people he cares about to know better than to slack off on their training or to blow off important things like making sure that people eat and rest adequately. So, while he'll make a verbal jab at how you're slower than usual, he's speaking to a point of 'Are you fatigued? Is that making you slower?' or, to his students, 'I know you can be better than this. Why are you not putting your best foot forward?' ( Although, this is not always true. Especially towards people he knows through observation will never improve or don't care to grow. )
That said, he's pretty upfront about giving compliments where compliments are due. It's only when people ask him to fluff their egos that he's quick to dismiss them or just ignore them.
Essentially, Lon'qu doesn't say his feelings aloud and he isn't partial to typical affectionate gestures. Anything like that is an immediate no, but he shows it in other ways — checking in on you to make sure you go to bed at a reasonable hour, keeping snacks on-hand, making sure there's enough water around. He often walks along the side of the street while keeping others on the inside. Depending, he sometimes will play along with extended jokes if it makes people happy or if he can get something out of it ( re: Vaike and Nowi supports ).

V : VALENTINE ; how does your muse feel about valentine’s day?
valentine's day asks.
08 | on valentine's days and others. he doesn't really have any strong feelings about valentine's day ( or whatever the fantasy equivalent of this would be )! he doesn't really care if people do or don't celebrate it. he doesn't himself, though he can kind of understand the reason why people do. he's pretty unlikely to be the kind to make a big show of it given to the fact he just isn't That Kinda Person, but he'll definitely go out of his way to get flowers or something at least nice if his partner makes it known that they want to celebrate it.

stained apron, sea tea, crab apple
undertale headcanon asks.
04 | on cooking habits. For the most part, Lon'qu's pretty clean but it's largely because he makes very simple meals that don't require a lot of work ( and not a lot of dishes for that same reason ). It's kind of 'well, I don't want to have to clean up after my mess so I don't see any reason to make anyone else do it.' Generally, he won't cook at all if given the opportunity.
But if he has to, it'll always be something that he can eat very cleanly and quickly without thinking about it too much. Can't get real messy if all you ever eat and therefore cook is boiled meat, boiled or pickled vegetables and rice.
05 | on patience. Lon'qu is actually pretty patient, though it very rarely comes off that way. Anything he does, he kind of does it for the long haul and that largely comes out of just how his life has ended up. He had to play the long game to get out of the slums of Chron'sin, had to be patient while he was training to get stronger, had to wait until the Ylisse-Plegian War was over, so on. His whole life has been waiting, so he's just used to it.
He's impatient when it comes to people who are openly lazy or feel the need to consistently prod at him even after he's told them not to.
06 | on sour and bitter foods. He'll eat pretty much everything, though he has very plain tastes. As far as sour foods are concerned, he'll eat pickled vegetables as a side dish to what he normally eats and doesn't really mind the bitterness of other things like coffee and the like. Generally, anything with a really strong taste or smell to it is the kind of foods he'll avoid otherwise. So as long as it doesn't lean too far into one direction or the other, he'll eat it.
