Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:

In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.

A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.

In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.

a less than teeny life update??

Hello to anybody that might be reading this! I know I’ve left this blog alone for a little over a year now, so to anyone still here I wanted to give an update- as well as mention that I plan on coming back! I’ll put it under the cut if anyone wants to read, I don’t wanna flood anybody’s timeline with personal info lol

So!! A lot happens in the span of a year. I moved out again, back to the town I lived in before I had to live with my family, and I’m doing a lot better! But it wasn’t that way for awhile. I had to move out because things came to a head with my stepdad, and I had to come to terms with a lot of the emotional abuse and religious trauma I’d been dealing with throughout my lifetime. 

I won’t go into details since it isn’t necessary- and as I’ve said before, I don’t want to trauma dump too hard on the timeline. But because of the divorce I learned a lot of bad things about my childhood and upbringing, so I’ve spent the last year coping and healing from a lot of stuff. I’ve got a therapist and a psychiatrist now, so things are looking up! I’m starting to be myself again, and I’m hoping to get back into my old hobbies! As a coping mechanism I think about my characters a lot, so I’ve been dying to write and develop them again just like I used to. I’m gonna update some stuff in the next few days and hopefully make a more official post and jump into some inboxes of people that might still be interested.

;v; Honestly, thank you to anyone that stuck it out. And if ur still here because you forgot I existed, that’s fine too! Maybe that’ll be good for a fresh start lmao~ I know I can’t excuse just up and disappearing, but putting my mental and physical health first has been doing wonders for me, so I hope you can understand and forgive me! I just hope my writing hasn’t gotten too rusty TvT
