The small troupe of elves made their way into Lothlorien, bows at their sides. Haldir, the head of the group, took an adjacent route towards his queen to present his findings.
His face remained still and serene as he kept his steady pace, but instinct told him that he wasn’t alone. Maintaining his stance, he waited for his guest to make their move. Turning a corner, a sudden tension in the air signaled to Haldir to lift a defense.
In one solid, confident motion, Haldir blocked the blow given by the mysterious suspect hiding down the hall. He knocked down every advance of the person, taking steps until he was ahead in the combat. With a swipe at their legs he was able to knock them onto the ground.
“One day…” the feminine voice spoke, “I will figure how to surprise you properly.”
Haldir knelt by his attacker, taking a calming breath, “And on that day you shall be deemed the new head marchwarden of Lothlorien.”
He extended a hand to lift her to her feet, knowing full well that she would try to knock him down again. And just as before, his instincts told him to hold her hand away before she even decided to launch herself on his back.
“How do you do that?” she questioned, more surprise entering her gaze as he dropped his grip on her arm. “It’s as if you know my actions before I even decide to execute them.”
“It is my duty to know the potential of my soldiers.” He stepped closer to her, moving a hand to the side of her face, holding the back of her neck and running a thumb across her cheekbone.
She smiled softly and closed the small gap between them, placing a hand on his chest, “You’ve been gone for so long.”
“We discovered a fellowship in the northern borders, near the river Nimrodel. They had a dwarf in their midst, but also the prince of The Woodland Realm. We escorted them into our kingdom blind…”
A sudden voice filled his conscious, one that was all too familiar, “You led a fellowship into our borders?”
A hoard of elves appeared nearby, Lady Galadriel leading them along.
(Y/N) immediately fell away from Haldir, moving her hands to behind her back. Her head remained bowed as their queen addressed her trusted marchwarden.
Haldir glanced towards (Y/N), refraining from placing a smile on his face, “Yes, Legolas of Mirkwood, Gimli of The Lonely Mountain, Aragorn the Ranger, and many Hobbits of the Shire.”
Lady Galadriel peered from Haldir to (Y/N) before addressing her court of followers, “We shall greet these newcomers. I expect them to be waiting in the main hall?”
She already knew the answer, but Haldir acknowledged her question before bowing and stating that he would meet the fellowship before her appearance.
“Enjoy your time together,” Galadriel muttered, holding the long drapes of her gown and lightly smirking as she descended more steps.
(Y/N) snuck a glance from her downtrodden eyes and shyly adjusted her already perfect hair as Haldir stiffly smiled; them ignoring the snickering faces of the rest of group following their queen.
Once they were finally alone once more, (Y/N) sighed deeply and shook away the stiffness of her limbs, “I suppose you should meet the rest of the company now.”
He turned to her and gave a sympathetic gaze, softening his strict stance, “I will go once you’ve calmed down.”
She turned her eyes to him and smiled bashfully, “You know I hate when you neglect your duties for…”
“My duties include the well-being of my soldiers, and that includes you.” He advanced her, making sure her gaze was on him, “You do realize you’re incredibly important to me? A company of strangers can wait.”
She lightly punched him in the shoulder, “This is why you’re marchwarden and I’m on the front lines.”
He pushed her hair aside and rubbed his hands up and down her arms, “I find your shyness around others to be adorable.”
“Is that supposed to be funny?”
“Not even in the slightest.” He pulled her close and leaned in for a kiss, but in that moment of weakness she took her chance.
Throwing herself around his torso, she wrapped her legs around his chest and pulled him into a headlock.
Laughing, she whispered in his ear, “I got you this time.”
Haldir smirked before grasping her arms around his neck and throwing her over his shoulder and onto the ground. He knelt over her and pinned her hands above her head, catching his breath at being slightly strangled.
“You best not let anyone know that – you’ll be made head marchwarden before too long. Then you’ll have to actually talk to…”
She lifted her head just enough to shut his mouth with a kiss.
