Daily Ray Fact:
The Panther Electric Stingray are one of the few species of stingray that can produce electricity. Under their skin, they have specially developed muscle cells called electrocytes. In this species, these muscle cells are located at the base of the right and left pectoral fins. This allows them to generate biogenic electricity, which they can discharge as surges to defend themselves from attack or to stun their prey.

Daily Ray Fact:(Featuring Me!)
*As always, it was a catch and release. This ray and other specimens were not harmed.*
The Lesser Electric Ray is a non-aggressive species and poses little danger to humans. This species of electric ray can discharge a shock between 14 and 37 volts, which is primarily used for defense. Any contact with the disc in the pectoral region can produce a mild electric shock, but it is not enough to injure a human. (Thank goodness, otherwise I probably would have never chosen to hold it.)
