Beauty Standards

I live in a country with fucked up beauty standards, so not India, but right below India. And Sri lanka is a beautiful country, the flora and fauna is just *chefs kiss* perfect, like you can see so much diversity in wildlife, peacocks, elephants, actual morons running the country, it’s just beautiful!!

But like I grew up watching commercials that kept saying “the whiter the better”. And these commercials were just targeted at girls. Like you’d see these female models who would have dark skin and they’d apply ‘fair and lovely’ and automatically go through a Photoshop filter in real life in the span of 5 seconds. Which was fucked up, because then u’d have all these aunties burning their face off trying to turn “more pretty” and obviously it doesn’t work, so they’d try another brand. Cause I guess fuck genetics? Your skin is only dark because u haven’t tried the new ‘fair and lovely glow up’ cream.

And the weird thing in Sri Lanka is that the phrase “omg, you’ve become white” is a compliment, which is fucking absurd. Like if you know a Sri Lankan auntie and u tell her that, she’ll blush and make you like- I dunno fucking potato curry or something. Which is a nice gesture u know, hospitality is key.

Like the other day my mom was “aww, my son, u’ve turned whiter” with a proud look in her eyes, like it’s a fucking accomplishment, and I just looked at her and smiled. Like how the hell am I supposed to reply to that? Just be like: “omggg thank youuu, u know the key is to get depressed, turn suicidal and not leave your room”.
