Gilded Wings brothel is where mxy ends up almost immediately after he finds himself waking up dazed and disoriented in the old practice array in Lanling that he forgot to break. Most of the courtesans there have adopted names of birds or names related to birds; mxy becomes Cang Jinse, the Golden Oriole
Gilden Wings is a... special kind of brothel.
Very, very popular among the higher ups in regards to sect hierarchy and government officials. The courtesans of the Gilded Wing know a lot, probably too much, but that’s not surprising since the brothel is secretly a front for an assassin organization that does it’s business beneath the brothel in the basement.
But it’s not only special in that regard. Some of the courtesans and patrons are completely normal humans. Some are decidedly... not. There might just be some spooky ooky supernatural vibes that are within the undercurrent. Mxy— now as Cang Jinse, can technically be counted among that. Technically, he died in the shed of Mo Manor and returned to life in a completely different city. Now he’s a bit of a magnet for the strange and supernatural— which is how he was brought to Gilded Wings in the first place. He’s different now, changed because he dabbled in something he likely wasn’t supposed to.

just a few Thots about shl scorpion king. under a cut for ~spoilers~
most of this is based on a twitter post i saw about an interview with xie’er’s (scorpion king) actor. basically, he explained that xie’er was envious/jealous of wkx because wkx was able to find his “light” and xie’er was still struggling to find his/stuck on the dark path.
zhao jing plays a huge role in the actions that xie’er takes throughout the show. he’s always clamoring for validation and acceptance from his yifu, willing to do anything to get his approval. it’s very reminiscent of jin guangyao, to me. except xie’er isn’t able to kill zhao jing. his yifu is all that he has. his own ambitions aren’t entirely formed, and though he can work outside of the realm of his yifu’s influence, a lot of what he does always circles back to zhao jing.
it’s a cycle that xie’er can’t seem to escape from. it’s an unhealthy, manipulative, toxic relationship. zhao jing no doubt groomed xie’er, and the other godsons in his care. zhao jing has surrounded himself with very pretty young men all willing to do his bidding, and absolutely pits them against each other so they’ll a) stay loyal to him and b) do anything he wants them to so that they can continue to earn his favor.
zhao jing’s love for xie’er is conditional. it’s constant emotional manipulation, constant gaslighting. once xie’er fell under zhao jing’s spell, he never stood a chance. Until the very end, when zhao jing’s actions came back to bite him.
it’s really only when xie’er begins to become suspicious of zhao jing calling on other godsons that the hold his yifu has on him starts to break. once beauty ghost and tragicomic fall into xie’er’s hands, he begins to actually form bonds with them— something he hasn’t really done with anyone other that zhao jing. zhao jing no doubt kept him isolated to keep him loyal.
xie’er always thought that zhao jing was his light. after meeting beauty ghost, after meeting wkx, everything he knew was essentially turned upside down. he allows the revenge to happen. he makes sure zhao jing can never speak again, knowing that if he could, he’d fall back under.
it’s my belief that xie’er survived the avalanche and zhao jing didn’t. once he survived, he had a choice: go back to the Scorpions and continue on a dark path, or leave it all and go looking for his light. he chose the latter— allowed himself to be assumed dead and finally shook off the chains zhao jing had on him.
i’m sure that du pusa and pretty arhat know he survived, and stay in contact with him, and likely help support his new wandering lifestyle— they inherited whatever businesses he owned and left the Scorpions to run them full time.
tldr; xie’er didn’t die and zhao jing is garbage. also xie’er’s on the hunt for a new rich Daddy.

Just some notes on my version of Meishan Yu:
*The Yu Sect turned down the offer to send disciples to Gusu. Yu Huian was once a classmate of Lan Qiren once upon a time. She didn’t like him then and she certainly doesn’t like him now, nor how Gusu’s three thousand rules have become more strict and enforced under his reign. She refuses to send her disciples to a place where they will be split between genders to learn and where the boys’ education is seemingly more important than the girls’.
*Because of Yu Yanmei’s marriage to Wen Xu, the Yu Sect was harassed far less than the other sects during Wen Ruohan’s reign of terror. While the Yu Sect were still forced to send disciples, their disciples were not in the hands of Wen Chao, rather set up in a class like setting with Wen disciples. However, when things began to go downhill, Yu Yanmei sent the disciples home.
*There is one other major family within the Yu Sect: The Xia Family. The original leader of the Yu Sect was married to a man of the Xia Family, in the beginning before children of Yu women began to take their mothers’ Yu surname. Thus, the Xia Family holds a very important place within the Yu Sect. Yu Daiyu is a direct descendant of Xia Caihong, the Silver Snake whom became a God. The Xia Family is known for the rare trait that pops up now and again in the Yu Sect: white blond hair.

being completely and incandescently in love with lwj doesn’t mean wwx’s depression, his guilt/regrets, his alcoholism, his insecurities, and his ptsd all magically disappear looking @ u mxtx. he still battles his demons, maybe even more so because he’s a man dumped into a time where it’s 13 years later and nightless city still seems like a day ago to him.
he can say “leave it all in the past” to jc, but it’s more to help jc move on than something he actually lives by himself.
he’ll laugh at himself for being forgetful to brush it off so people won’t worry, but his memory loss is tied completely to his terrible depression and anyone who knows him will know THAT.
postcanon, though he undoubtedly has a good life with his husband and all of the juniors that flock to him like imprinted ducklings, he still gets into funks, still has bad days, still has rock bottom days. But unlike in the burial mounds, he’s in a situation that’s better equipped to deal with this.

boy am i on a roll today with the metas.
this one is brought to you by @jiangswanyin due to a discord discussion.
On Golden Cores ( and why it’s bullshit that you can’t create a new one )
So, I admittedly haven’t done research on this, it’s just my own opinion and ideas, so here we go!
In mdzs, in all of it’s media, there is a whole arc dedicated to jc losing his golden core, and wwx secretly giving his brother his own, leaving himself defenseless and coreless against the wens.
this is something that was really unfair to both of them– the idea that it’s drilled into the minds of cultivators that you’re nothing without your core and the fact that jc was unable to shine in an attempt to do the impossible, and in wwx’s case, the fact that madam yu had made him feel that he was less than jc, that his life meant less, that he was only just a servant and should make sure that jc is safe above all else, even his own health and well being.
there’s really nothing in the series to perpetuate that losing your core was even a thing that could happen before core melting hand technique came along (that i can remember, anyway). so, in that context, this could be a very recent thing, something that hadn’t been researched at all. of course, in cql, there’s the old scroll where wwx finds a core transfer surgery, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was made for someone who had a core and then lost it.
if it is indeed a recent thing, and cultivators are made to think they’re nothing without a core, and believe the idea that an adult can’t form one, of course there’s going to be no research on it to see if it can, in fact, be done.
i think a lot of it is honestly psychological. with how hopeless and distraught they are, not to mention how depressed and empty they feel, their mind tricks their body into thinking it can’t be done. however, i would like to point out that in scum villain, if you consider all of the works to be in the same universe, shen jiu actually forms a golden core a while after the “cut off” age.
with a good teacher or just out of sheer stubbornness, jc could’ve very well formed a new golden core on his own. however, their situation was dire, and wwx as brilliant as he was, didn’t have many options or the time to come up with a different plan. and i do believe if wwx’s body would’ve been strong enough (the stress, resentful energy and severe malnutrition had taken a huge toll on him), he could’ve formed a new golden core as the yiling patriarch
tdlr; forming a new golden core is absolutely possible with hard work and sheer stubbornness, it’s just that no one has really tried it yet.

On Twin Prides and Yunmeng—
Not all soulmates are romantic.
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are two halves of a whole, twin souls split apart somewhere along the way. There’s a reason JC can’t tell that the golden core inside him isn’t his own, that he can still wield Sandu and Zidian so effortlessly, that they still recognize him as their Master despite it all. It’s the same reason that he could unsheathe a sealed Suiban— their energies are so synced that they likely could wield each other’s weapons all along.
This is likely why jgs was determined to rip them apart in the first place: together they were a danger to his position as chief cultivator. Despite the Jiang Sect being decimated, it rebuilt quickly because of how good and popular the family was in Yunmeng and that was bolstered by the Twin Prides’ deeds in the Sunshot Campaign. Together, the Twin Prides were unstoppable, and jgs underestimated jc by going after wwx first.
Everything they do seems to be for each other, even if it’s to their own detriment: wwx giving up his golden core to his brother so Jiang Cheng would live and flourish, jc giving himself to the wens so that wwx wouldn’t be caught. wwx defected from the Jiang Sect because he knew how jgs and politics were breathing down jc’s throat, even though he himself was the weaker link.
Their love for each other is unshakable.
Even with jc’s anger at jyl’s death, he still loved his brother. He searched high and low for him, interrogated every demonic cultivator for a decade still searching for him. Since he was small, wwx has always been attached to his hip, and jc can’t let go of the fact that his brother is just GONE. The narrative tries to tell us that jc hated demonic cultivators, killed them, but it shows us something else.
Like his threats of breaking jl’s legs, it’s likely the telling is nothing but rumors, since that’s a big, big theme in the series. Don’t believe everything you hear. The narrative shows us he still cares so much for his brother, that he longs to be close to him again even if he’s not sure how to say it, or even if his words come out too harsh or too angry.
With wwx, he values jc’s life over his own. It isn’t a healthy thing, but it’s been drilled into him since he first stepped foot into Lotus Pier. Despite that, he’s determined to protect jc no matter what. This causes friction and fraying in their relationship, as wwx lied about jc’s core and jc never revealed he gave himself up in the first place, but with how deep their bond goes, it’s something that can be repaired through words.
This is most apparent in CQL, where they finally talk, finally cry together and come to terms with things. It’s a start, a good one, and CQL gives us something the original refuses to— hope of reconciliation. That talk, wwx’s earlier whisper of wanting to return to yunmeng when he gets caught by jc in qinghe, jc’s reflecting and inner “take care” when they make it out of the temple, lwj’s and wwx’s brief separation at the end of the show.
There’s little doubt to me where wwx went after they parted— he returned home, back to Yunmeng. After the temple, I doubt either of them could leave things hanging like they were. It’s apparent to both of them they miss each other, miss being brothers. They’ve both built their own found families, but there’s still a void where each other should be.
Of course it was likely awkward at first— wwx didn’t want to overstep his bounds so he stayed in an inn, and the original disciples from the rebuilding likely pestered jc about why senior brother wei wasn’t staying with them. But they talked, they kept talking, they finally say all the words they should’ve said before, what they were too stubborn or afraid to say. in the end, wwx gives jc a jade token of gusu lan, and jc gives wwx another clarity bell of yunmeng jiang.
They grow, renew. Like the lotus of their home, they push through the mud and murky waters— together this time.
Though wwx is married and living in Gusu, and is technically is now of Gusu Lan by marriage, in his heart he’ll always belong to Yunmeng Jiang. It’s a place he’ll always return to, sometimes with his husband, sometimes alone while lwj is busy with chief cultivator business, or sometimes just when gusu lan gets to be too cold in the winter or too strict because of lqr’s influence.
Yunmeng will always be wwx’s home, there’s always a place for him there, jc makes sure of that.

Just some general headcanons about the way i see meishan yu, largely based on how madam yu is portrayed in the different mdzs media formats.
*meishan yu is a matriarchal sect. this means the heir of the sect will be female, regardless of the gender of the eldest child. instead of taking their father’s surnames if the father isn’t of the yu family, daughters of the yu family will take the yu surname to continue the family line.
*all children regardless of gender are taught cultivation and to build strong cores, though it’s the girls that usually shine.
*their main weapon of choice is the whip, but they often have lightweight swords and daggers as well.
*elder daughters of the yu family are often highly regarded. younger daughters are thought just as highly of, but they are the ones who are most often sent off to other sects to forge alliances through high ranking marriages and blood, a sneaky way to make sure that alliances can’t easily be severed.
*the sect motif is a snake circling a flower.
*meishan yu, due to an alliance with the wens through marriage, kept their noses out of the sunshot campaign. However, once the war was won, they poured supplies and money into lotus pier to help rebuild it. meishan yu also kept out of the ‘war’ against wwx, having no desire to fight a (former) disciple of yunmeng jiang.

this is gonna be a little bit rambley, but bear with me.
i know cql gets a lot of flack for wwx not being the founder of demonic cultivation, but i’m here to propose that he actually still was.
so, with the yin iron, things are a little murky, and i probably should’ve rewatched those episodes before i wrote this but anyway. if i remember correctly, it was a special metal and once upon a time, it was a “normal” spiritual artifact. however, it fell into the wrong hands and got corrupted.
but, i don’t think what it was corrupted with is the same thing as demonic cultivation. yes, there are some similarities in the energies used, but the yin iron focuses on making LIVE people puppets, whereas demonic cultivation doesn’t.
wwx’s demonic cultivation gets lumped in with the yin iron in cql because both are considered by the cultivation world to be “wicked tricks”. however, wwx’s demonic cultivation focuses on the dead. he uses demonic cultivation to summon spirits, mostly resentful spirits, along with (in the novel and donghua) corpses by making them zombiefied.
Not only does he do this via his flute, but he also seems to have created several talismans for summoning spirits, along with spiritual flags and arrays. of course, he also created things like the spiritual compass and unfortunately, the Stygian Tiger Seal. in cql it’s especially dangerous, because he didn’t realize at the time that it was made from a piece of the yin iron.
the yin iron used by the wens in cql is just an evil artifact. it isn’t demonic cultivation, and wwx is STILL the grandmaster of it.

⤷ OOC meme / @jiangswanyin / accepting
          yiling wei verse au headcanons
these are all mixed into the same verse so here we go....
Wei Wuxian
*Two years after he and the Wens hole themselves up at the Burial Mounds, he leaves them in the care of Wen Qing and seeks out Baoshan Sanren. It isn’t an easy task, and it’s one that takes him nearly a year and unnumbered favors to those few who’ve left the mountain to accomplish, but he finds her and asks for her help. Though she isn’t sure if even she can help him, she puts him through a rigorous spiritual training. His body in stasis, he trains day and night and finally— a spark blooms in his chest, filling the void of what used to be. With that new spark, a new sword is forged. Like his mother before him, he leaves her care and the mountain.
*Upon his return, he often disguised himself as a rouge cultivator and took care of problems as a way to earn money for the sect. He never had to do this in Yiling, as people would often leave food and other things at the bottom of the Burial Mounds as peace offerings, since with wwx there, they haven’t had problems with the Burial Mounds nor been plagued by anything else.
*He didn’t start accepting disciples until he was able to procure and fix up Yiling’s former Supervisory Office. He renames it Crows Cave and the crow becomes their Sect’s motif. Once Crows Cave is fixed up properly, his first disciples are the street children of Yiling, along with A-Yuan and Xinyi.
*When he isn’t teaching or busy running his sect or inventing new ideas for cultivation, wwx enjoys painting and drawing, just like he did when he was young. He designed their sect’s symbol himself, and he has dozens of drawings of rabbits strewn across his messy office space. He still jokingly refers to his home as the Demon Subdue Cave.
*He kept in touch with Jiang Cheng through secret letters and packages. Some of these letters were purely business, others were just family feels. On Jin Ling’s birthday, he would send gifts for him and ask JC to give them to him. They weren’t able to meet in person often, so he would often draw little portraits or doodles and include them in his letters
Wen Ning
*After returning to consciousness, he did his best to help around the Burial Mounds; from selling to helping farm to doing all of the heavy lifting. He also turns into the unofficial cook, since his sister is terrible at it, granny is too old, and the others are too tired. Even as they move to Crows Cave, he keeps this up, finding joy in it.
*To make money, he becomes something of Yiling’s doctor, since his sister is often too busy. It helps him feel useful, and slowly but surely he’s accepted in Yiling despite his undead appearance. That spreads to the surrounding villages, as he often takes them medicines.
*While helping WWX teach, he himself learns to harness his resentful energy and control it. He begins to use chains as a spiritual tool
*Wen Ning has a hard time taking care of himself since he’s always busy helping take care of others. His robes are often ratty, hair messy and sometimes dusty. Now that he’s undead, he’s very insecure, but still very eager to help people. When he gets in these states, his sister has to make him take care of himself
*He’s very fond of Yiling’s stray cats and often lures them to Crows Cave to feed them and take care of them. It isn’t unusual for Crows Cave to have an abundance of cats basking in the sun or see them pour out of Wen Ning’s room in the winter.
Mo Xuanyu
*Came to Crows Cave at seventeen. He was a shy thing; pale and skinny, very dainty and delicate and all in gold. He would often flinch if anyone went to touch him. He was spirited away from Koi Tower as his father’s abuse grew, since he refused to give him any dirt on either of his brothers or on Yanli.
*It took over a year for him to finally come out of his shell and finally trust again. Even so, during the time he was clammed up, he worked diligently with his training, far more than he ever did at Jin Sect, strengthening his golden core and blossoming into demonic cultivation.
*He’s one of the few who can understand wwx’s rambling notes about inventions and arrays. wwx may have invented all of them, but mxy is the one who turned all of the ramblings in something cohesive, literally writing books and pamphlets for disciples to study.
*He’s in charge of keeping inventory. He’s smart as a whip and wwx knows this, which is why he trusts mxy for these sorts of jobs. He also keeps the records room clean and in perfect order. At one point, he rearranged all the records to make everything easier to find. He also has a running catalog of everything,
*Though he was never ‘officially’ adopted by wwx, he often gets lumped in with the wei siblings, given how close he and his mentor are. Though he never officially changed his family name, he often goes by wei xuanyu. wwx very much likes to flaunt that, especially in ways that it might get back to jin guangshan. mxy doesn’t mind this one bit.

Okay but hear me out.
So He Xuan murders the og Earthmaster not long after he ascends. What if He Xuan chose Ming Yi not only because he’d recently ascended, but because they looked similar too.
It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, but I was thinking on the way home from work of an interesting scenario— what if the og Ming Yi was around long enough for him to have developed the most darling crush on Lady Windmaster, but he was always a little too shy to speak with her.
Maybe after He Xuan devours him, he wonders if the feelings he starts to develop are from Ming Yi. Except then he begins to compare her to his old fiancé— she was the moon; soft and shimmering, reserved and quiet. A proper lady. But Qingxuan is like the sun, bright and shining, giving all she meets a bright smile and excited greeting. She’s wild and flits about, she’s loud and warm as summer. She laughs and grabs his hand with no hesitation, giving her affection to him so freely.
He Xuan can see why Ming Yi was so infatuated with her. It doesn’t take much time before he slowly starts down the same road, even if he tries to deny it by telling himself that he’s only pretending, because Ming Yi was the one with the crush and he’s “Ming Yi” so the crush goes along with that.
