Wuxing – the connections between the Five Dragon Kings (Ref) and the Five Elements philosophy

To better understand the origins of the Five Dragon Kings and the ancient Chinese legend, it is worth mentioning the wuxing of natural philosophy, which states that all things are composed of five elements: fire, water, wood, metal and earth.

The underlying idea is that the five elements 'influence each other, and that through their birth and death, heaven and earth change and circulate'.

The five elements are described as followed:

Wood/Spring: a period of growth, which generates abundant vitality, movement and wind.

Fire/Summer: a period of swelling, flowering, expanding with heat.

Earth is associated with ripening of grains in the yellow fields of late summer.

Metal/Autumn: a period of harvesting, collecting and dryness.

Water/Winter: a period of retreat, stillness, contracting and coolness.

The wuxing system, in use since the Han dynasty (2nd century BCE), appears in many seemingly disparate fields of early Chinese thought, including music, feng shui, alchemy, astrology, martial arts, military strategy, I Ching divination, and traditional medicine, serving as a metaphysics based on cosmic analogy.

The wuxing originally referred to the five major planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Mars and Venus), which were thought of as the five forces that create life on earth. Wu Xing litterally means moving star and describes the five types of Qi (all the vital substances) cycles through various stages of transformation. As yin and yang continuously adjust to one another and transform into one another in a never-ending dance of harmony, they tend to do so in a predictable pattern.

The lists of correlations for the five elements are diverse, but there are two cycles explaining the major interaction. The yin-yang interaction, which by increasing or decreasing the qualities and functions associated with a particular phase, it may either nourish a phase that is in deficiency or drain a phase that is in excess or restrain a phase that is exerting too much influence (see below):

The Huainanzi (2nd BCE) describes the five colored dragons (azure/green, red, white, black, yellow) and their associations (Chapter 4: Terrestrial Forms), as well as the placement of sacred beasts in the five directions (the Four Symbols beasts, dragon, tiger, bird, tortoise in the four cardinal directions and the yellow dragon.

五方龍王（参照）と五行思想の関連性

ここで、五方龍王の起源、そして古代中国の伝説をよく理解するために、万物は火・水・木・金・土の5種類の元素からなる、という自然哲学の五行思想について触れておきましょう。 5種類の元素は「互いに影響を与え合い、その生滅盛衰によって天地万物が変化し、循環する」という考えが根底に存在する。

五行は次のように��明されている：

木は、春の豊かな生命力、動き、風を生み出す成長期。

火は、夏の太陽の暖かさの下で行われる成熟の過程、熱で膨張する時期。

土は、晩夏の黄色い野原での穀物の成熟に関連している。

金は、秋の収穫、収集、乾燥の時期。

水は、冬の雪に覆われた暗い大地の中に潜む新しい生命の可能性と静寂の時期。漢の時代 (紀元前2世紀頃) から使用されてきた五行説は、音楽、風水、錬金術、占星術、武術、軍事戦略、易経、伝統医学など、中国初期の思想の一見バラバラに見える多くの分野に登場し、宇宙の類推に基づく形而上学として機能している。

五行とは文字通り「動く星」を意味し、五種類の気（生命維持に必要なすべての物質）が様々な変容の段階を経て循環することを表している。陰と陽は絶え間なく互いに調整し合い、調和の終わりのないダンスで互いに変化していくため、予測可能なパターンで変化する傾向がある。

五行の相関関係は多様だが、主要な相互作用を説明する2つのサイクルがある。陰陽の相互作用は、特定の相に関連する資質や機能を増減させることで、不足している相に栄養を与えたり、過剰な相を排出したり、影響力を及ぼしすぎている相を抑制したりする (以下参照):

相生（陽）のサイクル

木は燃えて火を生む

火が土 (灰) をつくる

土は金属を産出する

金属は表面に水を集める

水は木を育てる

相克（陰）のサイクル

木は大地を構成する

土は水を堰き止める

水は火を消す

火は金属を溶かす

金属が木を切る

『淮南子』（紀元前2世紀）には、五色の龍（紺碧・緑、赤、白、黒、黄）とその関連性 (第4章: 地の形)、五方位への聖獣の配置（四枢の四象徴獣、龍、虎、鳥、亀、黄龍）が記述されている。

5社の就職試験を受け、なんと5社すべてから内定をいただきました。誰にでもできるシンプルな作戦ではあるのですが、実際にやるとなるとすこし大変かもしれません。けれど、どうしてもコピーライターになりたかった私は、自分が編み出したこの方法を実践することで、内定がもらえるだろうという自信のようなものがありました。なぜならその方法は、日本中の誰も（きっと）やったことがない方法だと思っていたからです。ということでさっそく、その手の内を明かしますね。こたえは簡単。「写経」です。わかりますでしょうか？　一般的にはお坊さんがお経をひたすら写し取る作業のことを指しますよね？　コピーライターの場合もほぼ同じ意味です。「過去の（名作といわれる）コピーを手で書き写すこと」。これだけです。本当にこれだけのことを行うだけで、試験を受けたすべての会社から内定をもらうことができました。ちなみにこの写経、コピーライターを志す人や、若いコピーライターなら、経験済みという人も多いと思いますし、上司から「やれ」と言われることもありますよね。それほど“ベタ”な方法なわけです。それでもこの方法で内定がもらえると自信があったのは、人とはちがうやり方を発見したからです。前置きが長くなってしまいましたが、さっそく具体的な方法をお伝えします。それは“圧倒的な量”をこなすことです。あまりにも単純でしょうか？　がっかりしたでしょうか？　すみません…　けれどもなぜわたしが、そんなサルでも思いつくような方法を実践しようと思ったのか。その経緯も説明しておきますね。わたしは当時、宣伝会議が主催する『コピーライター養成講座』に通っていました。（…）さまざまな講師の方に、“定点観��をするように”、尋ねました。「コピーライターになるために今やっておいたほうがいいいちばんの練習ってなんですか？」シンプルな質問です。答えの中でもっとも多かったのが、さきほど紹介した「写経」だったのです。さらに偶然なのですが、当時読んだ広告業界への就職に関するの書籍の中で、ある人がこう言っていました。「コピー年鑑の1年分のすべての文字を書き写しました」。よし、これだ！　未経験のじぶんがコピーライターになるための方法はこれしかない！そのときそう思ったんです。けれど1年分じゃその人の真似で終わってしまいます。倍の2年分にしようか？　いやいや、それだとインパクトは弱いかな…。思いきって5年分！　うーん…中途半端？　ということで結論、 10年分のコピー年鑑を写経しました。これがわたし流の、すべての会社から内定をゲットした方法です。さて、やるべきことは決めたものの、そのためにはコピー年鑑を入手しないといけません。ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、コピー年鑑といえば1冊約2万円！もする高額書籍です。若かったジブンが簡単に購入できる書籍ではありません。そこで近所の図書館を何件かはしごして、10年分を手元に入手しました。10冊すべてを自宅のデスクに積み上げると壮観でしたが、これをすべて写すのかと思うと、果てしない道のりにも感じました。（…）さて、準備が整いました。コピー年鑑は最初から写していきます。TCC賞、審査委員賞、部門別コピー、新人賞という流れだったかと思います（現在の年鑑では新人賞が前の方に来ていますね）。とくに新人賞の受賞者は年齢や作品が大きく取り上げられていたので、勝手にライバル視していました。また、ひとつの広告に絞ると、キャッチコピー⇒リードコピー⇒ボディコピー⇒そして小さな文字で書かれた注釈まですべてを写します。肉眼で見えない部分は、“100均”で購入した虫眼鏡を使って読み取りました。コピーの良し悪しなんて当時はまったくわかりません。それでもコピー年鑑に掲載されている時点ですべてお手本だと思ってひたすら作業を続けました。（…）写経の過程でたくさんの発見もありました。コピーを写すことでいいとされるコピーを知識として知ったということはもちろんですが、それ以外にも、毎年掲載されているコピーライターの名前は嫌でも覚えます。また、その人の文体までなんとなくわかってきます。細かい点でいうと、「ボディコピーってこれくらいの長さが一般的なんだな」など、そういった感覚もついてきます。10年分を通して見ると、じつは毎年同じような作品が掲載されていることも知りました。そのため作業に飽きてしまう日もありましたが、言葉を変えれば“飽きるほどやる”ということは、覚えてしまったということでもあありますよね。とにかくとても大切な経験だったと思っています。さて、作業自体は楽しかったのですが、困ったこともありました。朝から晩まで写経を続けていると、8時間くらい経過したところで、目の前がチカチカして、軽い眩暈のような状態になるんです。遠近感がつかめず、立ち眩みがするのです。心ではもっと書きたいと思うのですが、その症状が発症したら作業は終了と決めました。1日約8時間。1冊を写し終えるのに5日くらいかかっていたと思います。 10年分を3か月で写経完了！写経したコピーが書かれたプロジェクトペーパーは、さきほども言ったようにパンチ穴をあけて、リングファイルのいちばん背幅が厚いものに綴じていきます。10年分ですから相当の厚さになります。重量も5kgくらいはあったでしょうか。ちょうどその頃、養成講座も修了するタイミングでしたので、就職活動も開始しました。養成講座の受講生だけが見られる求人票や、マスメディアンのサービスを利用しました。当時は地方在住だったため、面接のためには上京の必要がありました。交通費をなるべく抑えたかったので、なるべく面接は1日にまとめるようにして、その結果、5社を1日で受けられるようにスケジュールを組みました。 ※書類選考は半分ほどの割合で通過しました。 “写経ファイル”は、キャリーバッグに入れないと持ち運びができないほどの大きさにふくれあがっていました。ですが、面接で毎回そのファイルを見てもらうと、必ずといっていいほどウケます。若干ひかれていたかもしれません。「なにそれ？」「こんなヤツ初めて見た」「誰もやったことないんじゃない？」「うちで決めちゃえば？」などなど…。手ごたえを感じるたくさんの言葉をいただくことができました。未経験者がコピーライターという肩書きを手に入れるためには、どうすればいいのか。内定から逆算して行動できたことがよかったと思います。元々、学生時代に行った就職活動もけっこう好きでした。いろんな会社にタダで葉入れて、話が聞ける。そしてもちろんたくさん落ちました。そんななかで自分をアピールする方法を考えないといけないということも学びました。どうすれば、「人と差別化できて」「インパクトを残せて」「いっしょに働いてみたい」と思ってもらえるか。そういった視点で準備をすることが重要です。しょせん私自身は、実際としては“経験ゼロの若造”なわけですから。それでも「おもしろいヤツだな」と思っていただけると、次のステップに進めるのではないかと考えていました。結果としてすべての会社から内定をいただくことができましたが、正直そこまでの結果は予想していませんでしたけど。この方法を実践すれば、すべての会社とは言わないまでも、ある程度の確率でいいところまで行けるのではないでしょうか。もちろんもっと楽でスマートな方法もあるかもしれません。でも、本当にかなえたい夢のためなら、努力はできると思います。逆に、これくらいの努力ができないのであれば、あなたはあまりコピーライターには向いていないかもしれません。ちなみにわたしの場合は、電通や博報堂に入社することよりも、コピーライターになる方が重要でした。結果として10年以上がたった今も、毎日楽しく働くことができていますし、「会社行くの嫌だなぁ」と思ったことは一度もありません！

Note

how common is it for adaptations to give stone monkey a (usually female) friend on flowerfruit mountain? i've noticed it in a couple adaptations and wonder if it comes from a specific adaptation

Funny enough YES!

At least I think we can all think of one man in particular for the common grey-fur monkey companion that Shihou/Wukong has...

And that is Tezuka Osamu!

I think it starts with his manga My SonGoku ぼくの孫悟空.

This was first published in 1952 and has been quite influential in Japanese interpretations of Sun Wukong.

He was actually influenced by Tessen Koshu who made the Princess Iron Fan cartoon 铁扇公主 in 1941 with that kind of rubber hose kind of art style.

Anyway, the main point is that this guy made a certain character at the start of his manga before Wukong left for his training.

"While Biko, a monkey born from a stone, starts as a shy crybaby, he becomes the king of the monkeys with the encouragement of a gentle sister monkey, LinLin. He learns Senjutsu, becomes Son Goku, and goes on a rampage in Heaven...

Sister edition of "Boku no Son Goku", girls' manga version "Journey to the West"."

Otherwise known as RinRin depending on how you translate it. Or even DeeDee or Reina. Depends on what you are looking at.

"RinRin-chan" The tomboyish monkey to the main character. She names the stone monkey Biko and takes care of him as an older sister."

I haven't read the manga (I don't know Japanese) nor do I understand how manga history in how this is both a "Hitomi" (Akita Shoten) 1960 serialization but I do know she is credited to Tezuka Osamu. And her influence has been in serial more of a couple of Japanese Xiyouji iterations.

Her next appearance being in ALAKAZAN THE GREAT Saiyuki ぼくの孫悟空 which was made in 1960. This was written by Baku Yumemakura who was a fan of Tezuka Osamu's works where she goes by RinRin. A pretty one-to-one look from what she looked like in the manga

This is also some inspiration in the 1967 Goku's Great Adventures 悟空の大冒険 but any female side character was replaced with a fairy-like person Tatsuko. She isn't Rinrin of course but I think that since this was also credited to Tezuka Osamu that having a pink-themed older sister character was what inspired her.

There was also a female monkey by the name of Fanya from the 1999 Magic Monkey モンキーマジックTV series that is more well-known for its video game. Not named Rinrin at all but... look at her. She gets TWO flowers in her hair and a pink theme. I know flowers and pink aren't the most creative choice for a girl monkey but that is a clear inspiration.

She wasn't really seen by name until the 2003 movie, My Son Goku ぼくの孫悟空 where she was brought back by where she goes by Reina in the eng subs! Here her name is slightly different but I think that this might be my favorite version of her thus far! She is such a caring person and while he isn't in the movie that long she plays such an impactful role!

These are mostly Japanese interpretations because of their tie with the My SonGoku manga but there are a few more giving Wukong a grey monkey friend in his Shihou phase in Chinese interpretations.

The only one I can think of that can be a real nod of acknowledgment is really 1999 Legends of the Monkey King 西游记 with an unnamed girl monkey (if she does have a name please let me know I've never learned it!) Love the change from pink to yellow, we are getting creative here.

These are all the examples I can think of at least in the media I've personally seen!

The only grey-furred sidekick thus far was LiuEr Mihou from Monkey King 2009 美猴王. I think this one might be more coincidental with the grey fur and the pink theme but that would be hilarious if it was to fit the 'childhood best friend' card that Rinrin, a completely different character, has set.

I do find some comments on how LiuEr in this version took RINRIN'S place as the childhood best friend trope. Like that idea of Wukong in his Stone Monkey phase of life having a Best friend is now tied to the image of Rinrin! It is funny to think that out of all the interactions of giving Wukong sidekicks, this one seems to be a re-occurring one consistently. Sadly I haven't seen another version in nearly 20 years!! We've been deprived!

Will we see this character again soon? Hard to say considering it's been so long but I love that in at least 3 different Japanese Xiyouji interactions and a general nod in acknowledgment in 2 as well.

The Gintama Sound Ultra Soul 24 set list.

It's made up of the top 10 songs as decided by fans via a survey conducted last year, with some fun surprises sprinkled here and there. For each song, video would play of the scenes or characters related to the song. This week’s initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.
