Wuxing – the connections between the Five Dragon Kings (Ref) and the Five Elements philosophy 

To better understand the origins of the Five Dragon Kings and the ancient Chinese legend, it is worth mentioning the wuxing of natural philosophy, which states that all things are composed of five elements: fire, water, wood, metal and earth.

The underlying idea is that the five elements 'influence each other, and that through their birth and death, heaven and earth change and circulate'.  

The five elements are described as followed:

Wood/Spring: a period of growth, which generates abundant vitality, movement and wind.

Fire/Summer: a period of swelling, flowering, expanding with heat.

Earth is associated with ripening of grains in the yellow fields of late summer.

Metal/Autumn: a period of harvesting, collecting and dryness.

Water/Winter: a period of retreat, stillness, contracting and coolness.

The wuxing system, in use since the Han dynasty (2nd century BCE), appears in many seemingly disparate fields of early Chinese thought, including music, feng shui, alchemy, astrology, martial arts, military strategy, I Ching divination, and traditional medicine, serving as a metaphysics based on cosmic analogy.

The wuxing originally referred to the five major planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Mars and Venus), which were thought of as the five forces that create life on earth. Wu Xing litterally means moving star and describes the five types of Qi (all the vital substances) cycles through various stages of transformation. As yin and yang continuously adjust to one another and transform into one another in a never-ending dance of harmony, they tend to do so in a predictable pattern.

The lists of correlations for the five elements are diverse, but there are two cycles explaining the major interaction. The yin-yang interaction, which by increasing or decreasing the qualities and functions associated with a particular phase, it may either nourish a phase that is in deficiency or drain a phase that is in excess or restrain a phase that is exerting too much influence (see below):

The Destruction Cycle (Yin)

Earth dams (or absorbs) Water

The Huainanzi (2nd BCE) describes the five colored dragons (azure/green, red, white, black, yellow) and their associations (Chapter 4: Terrestrial Forms), as well as the placement of sacred beasts in the five directions (the Four Symbols beasts, dragon, tiger, bird, tortoise in the four cardinal directions and the yellow dragon.

ここで、五方龍王の起源、そして古代中国の伝説をよく理解するために、万物は火・水・木・金・土の5種類の元素からなる、という自然哲学の五行思想について触れておきましょう。 5種類の元素は「互いに影響を与え合い、その生滅盛衰によって天地万物が変化し、循環する」という考えが根底に存在する。 

五行は次のように説明されている：

木は、春の豊かな生命力、動き、風を生み出す成長期。

火は、夏の太陽の暖かさの下で行われる成熟の過程、熱で膨張する時期。

土は、晩夏の黄色い野原での穀物の成熟に関連している。

金は、秋の収穫、収集、乾燥の時期。

水は、冬の雪に覆われた暗い大地の中に潜む新しい生命の可能性と静寂の時期。 漢の時代 (紀元前2世紀頃) から使用されてきた五行説は、音楽、風水、錬金術、占星術、武術、軍事戦略、易経、伝統医学など、中国初期の思想の一見バラバラに見える多くの分野に登場し、宇宙の類推に基づく形而上学として機能している。 

五行とは文字通り「動く星」を意味し、五種類の気（生命維持に必要なすべての物質）が様々な変容の段階を経て循環することを表している。陰と陽は絶え間なく互いに調整し合い、調和の終わりのないダンスで互いに変化していくため、予測可能なパターンで変化する傾向がある。

五行の相関関係は多様だが、主要な相互作用を説明する2つのサイクルがある。陰陽の相互作用は、特定の相に関連する資質や機能を増減させることで、不足している相に栄養を与えたり、過剰な相を排出したり、影響力を及ぼしすぎている相を抑制したりする (以下参照):

相生（陽）のサイクル

木は燃えて火を生む

火が土 (灰) をつくる

土は金属を産出する

金属は表面に水を集める

水は木を育てる

相克（陰）のサイクル

木は大地を構成する

土は水を堰き止める

水は火を消す

火は金属を溶かす

金属が木を切る

『淮南子』（紀元前2世紀）には、五色の龍（紺碧・緑、赤、白、黒、黄）とその関連性 (第4章: 地の形)、五方位への聖獣の配置（四枢の四象徴獣、龍、虎、鳥、亀、黄龍）が記述されている。

So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.

４月１２日は、恩師が企画し、演奏したコンツェルトを聴きに行ってきました。

音響があまり良くないと噂の愛知県芸術劇場コンサートホールでしたが、その中でも、比較的良いとされる場所を知っているので（２回の最前列）確保しました。日本最大級のパイプオルガンがあり、それで、ちと話題はあるものの、残響やエンハンスされる音域など、気になる部分も多々ありかと。まぁ、それは置いておいて、名フィルが、大コケしなくなった事が、この日最大の驚きでした。毎年「不安」しかなかったからなぁ。ジョイントするピアノ、フルート、バリトンなど、まずまずの出来で、これも安心できたかな。恩師のピアノ（モーツアルト）も、無事に。オケとのギクシャク感は各所で見られたものの、総じて良かった。

で、客演のミキエロン女史。ショパンのP-Conだったので、曲はあまり好きではなかったけれど、堂々とした演奏だった。そして、私と解釈が違うところも含めて、全体的に良かった。アンコールもショパンのピアノソロだったけれど、こちらでは、ペダリングの美しさに、まさに陶酔してしまったわ。低音（単音）を、ものすごく良いタイミングで、ペダルを。うねる事なく、まっすぐに伸びた音に感動！

On April 12th, I went to listen to a concert planned and performed by my teacher. The Aichi Prefectural Art Theater Concert Hall was rumored to have poor acoustics, but I knew of a place that was said to have relatively good acoustics, so I secured a spot (front row for both concerts). It has one of the largest pipe organs in Japan, and although it has been talked about a lot, there are also many things that are of concern, such as the reverberation and the enhanced range. Well, putting that aside, the biggest surprise of the day was that the Nagoya Philharmonic didn't make a big deal of it. Every year I felt nothing but anxiety. The joint piano, flute, baritone, etc. were all pretty good, so I guess I was relieved. My teacher's piano (Mozart) is also safe. There were some awkward moments with the orchestra, but overall it was good. And Ms. Michieron was a guest performer. It was Chopin's P-Con, so I didn't really like the piece, but it was a dignified performance. And it was good overall, including the parts where my interpretation was different. The encore was Chopin's piano solo, but here I was truly mesmerized by the beauty of the pedaling. Pedal a bass note (single note) at a very good timing. I was impressed by the straight sound without any undulations!

"miss"が合いたいと思う気持ち/懐かしむ気持ち/後ろを振り返って惹かれるような気持ちを表すものだとは知っているんですけど、"I really missed ART."を翻訳機にかけると"ARTが本当に恋しいです"になるんですね。

I know that "miss" expresses a feeling of wanting to be together, a feeling of nostalgia, a feeling of looking back and being attracted to someone, but when I put "I really missed ART." through a translator, it becomes "ARTが本当に恋しいです".

また説明が難しいんですけど……

日本語の｢恋しい｣は、a long for.../miss...の意味と、dear/dearest/sweet/darling/belovedの意味、両方を持ちます。

つまり、めちゃくちゃmurderbotがARTのことだいすきじゃん！？どうした！？？とすごいビックリしたんですね。

「だいすき」にも色々あるのでDeepLの前で唸っているのですが。love,like,favor,intimate,affection,care about...

Dragon King – the god of water and dragons in Chinese mythology

Many dragons appear in Chinese folklore, of which the Dragon King is the leader. Also known as the Dragon God, the Dragon King is a prominent figure in Chinese art and religion. He is adopted by both Taoism and Buddhism and is the ruler of all water. Known as Long Wang in China, he has both human and dragon forms and can switch between dragon and human forms. Despite his intimidating and ferocious nature, Long Wan is regarded as a benevolent deity who brings good luck and chi energy to people living near the sea.

The Dragon King is a Chinese water and weather god. He is regarded as the dispenser of rain, commanding over all bodies of water. He is the collective personification of the ancient concept of the lóng in Chinese culture.

In East Asian cultures, dragons are most often shown as large, colorful snakelike creatures. While the dragons sometimes have qualities of a turtle or fish, they are most likely seen as enormous serpents.

While some named dragons are associated with specific colors, the dragon king can be shown in any shade. Like other Chinese dragons, he has a “horse-like” head, sharp horns and claws, and a hair-like beard.

Like many weather gods around the world, Long Wang was known for his fierce temper. It was said that he was so ferocious and uncontrollable that only the Jade Emperor, the supreme deity in Chinese Taoism, could command him. His human form reflects this ferocity. He is shown as a noble warrior in elaborate bright red robes. He usually has a fierce expression and poses with a sword.

During the Tang dynasty, the Dragon King was also associated with the worship of landowners and was seen as a guardian deity to protect homes and subdue tombs. Buddhist rain-making rituals were learnt in Tang dynasty China. The concept was introduced to Japan with esoteric Buddhism and was also practised as a ritual of the Yin-Yang path (Onmyōdō) in the Heian period.
