大晦日に彼氏と別れた。いつか絶対別れるという結末はかなり前から決めていたのだけれど、往生際悪くズルズルと引き伸ばしてしまった。別れ話を切り出したら揉めるのはわかっていた。どうせ皮肉を言われ、不機嫌になられ、嫌な気持ちにさせられるのだろうと思っていた。案の定、そうだった。年末に会う友人に片っ端から「早く別れなよ」とそれぞれ毎晩毎晩怒られに行き、「2022年に彼氏置いていくぜ！」みたいなふざけた啖呵を毎晩毎晩切らなければ別れ切れなかった。彼との毎日は、小匙のスプーンから毎日砂糖をすり切っているみたいだった。溢れそうな感情はすり切って見えないようにする。けれど、誰も掃除しない床で感情は腐っていく。

不満ばかり心擦り切られる毎日だと言ってみても、嫌いだったわけではないのだ。前々から友人らには別れを勧められていたが、別れなかったのはわたし自身だ。目を凝らしてみれば、ふたりで息止まるほど笑い合うことも沢山あったし、楽しい瞬間が沢山あった。いつか彼とわたしが馴染んで、笑いばかりの生活になってほしいと思っていた。だが、生活が馴染む前に、些細なことで頻繁に喧嘩するように関係が変化した。私たちは笑い合う時と喧嘩とで浮き沈みが激しい関係で摩耗してしまっていた。ひとは幸せを透かして不幸ばかり見てしまうと知っててもなお、離れるべきだったと思う。

2023年、気持ちが晴れ晴れしている。周りにも別れて良かったと言われる。気持ちは晴れ晴れしている。ずっと悩んでいたから、日の目を見た気分だ。晴れ晴れしている。晴れ晴れしている。でも今度は別れたら別れたで、夜になれば、どことない孤独が部屋の隅からじわじわ滲み出てくるようになる。彼の家に半同棲していたから、彼の家に行かずに毎日自分の家に帰る自分に慣れない。怠惰な彼は合鍵を最後までつくらなかったが、インターフォンを鳴らすと出迎えてくれる彼があの家にはいた。年末年始の慌ただしさが過ぎ去ってしまってより一種の喪失感のようなそれが輪郭をもつ。あんな人だったのに、もう2度とヨリを戻してたまるかと思うのに、ツーショットのアイコンが変わっていないのを見て、手の届くところに彼がまだいると勝手に解釈して安堵してしまう自分がいる。

付き合うってただの口約束なのに、どうしてこうもややこしくなるのだ。ややこしくさせているのは当事者のふたりでしかないことはわかっているのだけれど。
