(This was originally an ask received through Twitter)
"Hello! Can you please elaborate on the time loop theory in book 2 that you mentioned in the tweet where you talked about your favourite theories?"
I am wary about discussing this theory as there are many others who have put much more thought into it than I have, but I can certainly try with what I was able to find :>
(The information in this thread was combined from here, here, here, and here)
The basic theory is that everything we know is repeating in a loop in an attempt to either stop something from happening or to make something happen.
Tumblr media
The game’s tagline of “I will show you a true happy ending” (EN: “Let us show you the real happily-ever-after”) could be insinuating that there have already been less than happy endings, and we may have already seen one: while some theorize that the events of the prologue are showing us what is going to happen in the future, others say that it is both that and something that has already happened.
Tumblr media
The theory goes that the battle with the chimera (who may or may not be an overblotted Grim) was lost and everyone (or just the prefect) is sent back to try again, thus the opening lines of the game narrated in Crowley’s voice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Note: I would have translated this as “I—they—you—only have a little time left. Whatever you do, don’t let go”, but the situation is so vague that anything is possible.)
(Here is a short comic insinuating that this time loop is Crowley’s unique magic (warning: blood, death, a Yuu design))
This theory seems to be largely inspired by Mickey’s comment that he has seen the same dream three times but he also says “your voice gets clearer and clearer every time.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Mickey also shows up in Books 2 and 3 but we were not able to speak with him, it is possible that this is not actually hinting at two earlier loops, just earlier events within the same timeline. This does not dismiss the time loop theory and might mean that this is Mickey’s first time interacting with the loop, but there have been far more than just two or three timelines.
(This account pretends that Book 7 does not exist yet, so that is about as specific as I can get.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The theory gets kind of wild with references to STYX’s simulation system, supposed inconsistencies with Ace and Epel, Crowley’s potential connection to STYX, etc, but one thing that everyone seems to agree on is: Leona knows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leona is extremely powerful and extremely private.
He has had a number of contracts with Azul who is also a powerful mage, and according to Idia he seems like “the kind of guy who always knows he’s dreaming.”
Yana has confirmed that Idia has a part in Book 7 and, with both him and Leona halfway out of their coffins in promotional art, people are wondering if Leona will be stepping up as well.
We know that Riddle’s current personality is a 180 degree change from original plans and that this change was made pretty far into development, after everything had already been approved.
There are also rumors that Leona’s Book 2 was the original Book 6, looking at older promotional information (Book 2 was originally listed between Ignihyde and Diasomnia on the official website).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is possible that—much like Riddle’s situation—Yana came up with a better idea than what had originally been decided, and it required shoehorning Leona’s drama into an earlier Book in order to make it work.
This would mean that Book 7 used to have significant space for Leona (there is a pattern of the previous Overblotter having a role in the next Book).
That space may have been rewritten for Idia, but it is also possible that Idia’s role was added separately and a role for Leona remains to some extent, which is why they went out of their way to say that Leona knows when he is in a dream.
Theories vary from “Leona is 100% aware of what is going on, broke free from the loop and he is the only one getting older as he tries to save the world” to “Leona knows something isn’t right but not exactly what.”
The proof that people usually point to is his comment where he is unsurprised by Grim “always” eating black stones (which he shouldn’t know anything about), but the phrasing is so vague that he could just be making the connection between the stones and a potential blot-risk.
Another scene that is often referenced in the “Leona knows” conversation is an interaction with Jamil where he accurately predicts Jamil’s attack on Kalim despite how rarely they interact before Book 6.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are also the three white chess pieces on the chessboard in Leona’s bedroom that seem to correspond to the only three characters in the game with light cosmic magic: a white rook for Rook, a white knight for Silver and a white pawn for Kalim, whom Leona literally refers to as a pawn piece in chess during Tamashima-Mina (these three chess pieces are also displayed prominently in Leona's first Birthday groovy).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leona also seems suspicious of Crowley, suspects what really happened in Book 5 and is able to literally sniff out magic, which we have seen no other character capable of doing.
Leona is very perceptive in general: he is suspicious of Lilia in Spectral Soiree, calls him an old man when no other character outside of Diasomnia knows his true age, is the first to figure out that Malleus is pretending to be possessed and is able to tell when someone becomes injured and is trying to hide it in both Book 6 and an event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is not proof that Leona knows what is happening, but it may be an argument for why it is likely that he knows more than he is willing to let on.
Some versions of the time loop theory say that the same prefect is being sent back over and over again to try and save everyone (which ties into the game’s opening), while other versions say that this is the prefect’s first time being summoned into a loop that has been going on for a long time without them, in an effort by someone (Crowley?) to change the ending of the story.
While not technically part of the game, the Twst novelization supports the first pattern while the manga series supports the second, with new prefects showing up after the previous prefect presumably fails.
Knowing Yana it is possible that the game is actually a third, entirely different pattern with the novel and manga exploring alternatives that were considered for the game but not used.

Hey! I love your art a lot, and you've helped me learn a lot about other things aswell. I just wanted to thank you for all that! ❤️
(This part is optional: I was wondering if you have any process videos of the full body character designs, you do? Like with the different outfits? I love the texture of that particular style of yours so much and would love to learn to integrate some aspects into my own art, If you would allow for that?)
Hi and thank you! It's much appreciated and I'm glad you stuck around :)
That's totally fine! Unfortunately, I don't think I have any process videos of the character designs (they take me a while and I go back and forth a lot with outfits so I never have space for them on my computer) but I can give a run-through of what I do!
- this is only applicable for CSP -
Step One:
First Image: So I start with the base, I go about these like those paper dolls. I sketch these out, line them, and color them in as I would any other lineart - however I merge the layers after I'm done. They are always bald because if I'm going for an outfit lineup I can change up the hairstyle depending on the clothes. Second Image: After I merge all the layers and lower the opacity, I can sketch the outfits on a different layer - If there are smaller details I want to include I usually sketch them in a different color so I can see it clearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step Two:
First Image: after sketching out what I want, I turn down the opacity for the sketch layer and line over that. I use a really high stabilization because I have shakey hands and it always looks clean with a high stabilization. For things like jewelry, I don't always do line art (mostly depends on how small it is) but I save it for later. Second Image: I don't always do hair as a solid color but In this case, I painted the hair on a layer above both the lineart, base, and coloring layer. Coloring the lineart is pretty standard, nothing fancy (I use the fill tool to speed up time often). Just make sure the colors are differentiated enough so you can use the color gamut tool in the next step.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step Three:
Images One & Two: With the lineart fully colored, you can select individual colors and add or draw patterns. Most of the patterns I use are from the Csp gallery (bunabi has good ones up I use often). If you have the selection on a different layer, you can change up the layer filter or even do another select color gamut on the pattern and shade/color it yourself (this is how I do metallic fabrics). Once you're done adding patterns, merge everything except the base layer and lineart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step Four:
Images One & Two: For things like jewelry that would be too small to line, I freehand a silhouette of the jewelry with a bright neon color, then select the color gamut on the neon color, and then select the color outline so it has the appearance of me doing itty bitty lineart for it. I go back in on the color layer, shade it, and color it as metal, and then bam. You are all done!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Smaller things: After everything is done sometimes I'll go back in with a dark pen and go over some of the lineart where fabric creases just to give it more depth or I'll put a color filter over the final drawing just to make it all a bit more cohesive.
This is the brush I use for softer lineart:
And this is the brush I use for more thin, detailed, lineart:
Hope this helped a little, happy drawing!

[Comic] Mafia Sitter
I started writing in mid-January to submit to the Global Comic Award 2024 and finally completed it. Continuing from there is a long feedback.
The working time is two months for the main text and two weeks for the cover. Around January 11th, I received a DM from a friend saying, "There's a contest like this," and thought, "The deadline is the end of March... it's impossible for me (I've never drawn a completed comic before)." But it's a comic contest aimed at the world... My art style is only recognized in this contest... I couldn't ignore this contest. I was in the middle of making another piece, but I interrupted it, and I was full of anxiety about whether I could draw a comic in just two and a half months. However, the thought, "Instead of worrying, I should act quickly," came to my mind, and I started writing from January 13th, changing my mindset.
I spent 1 day on the script, plus 1 day typing the dialogue, and started the "completed 1 page per day" lifestyle from January 16th.
The goal was to complete 45 pages, but at the plotting stage, it was about 56 pages. When I actually started drawing the manuscript, the planned page allocation didn't match, and the total number of pages increased to 65. (I learned the importance of page allocation.) At a pace of 1 page per day, I wondered if I would make it by March... (I'm easily bored, I didn't think I could do 1 page per day.) So, I rearranged my schedule to make 3 pages on weekends, which would give me some leeway. This idea turned out to be a big success.
As a result, I achieved 1 page per day and was able to finish drawing all the pages by early March, leaving the remaining time to work on the cover, which is like the face of the comic.
Since I work as a company employee, I had to finish work by 8:00 p.m. to make time for the manuscript, which was a daily pressure. There were times when I finished the manuscript at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. on weekdays. I fell ill. At that time, I felt like giving up. (On the day I fell ill, I slept for about two hours and resumed manuscript production after my condition improved a bit.)
It was truly a life of "pushing myself to the limit", but accomplishing it gave me confidence. 'Oh, I can make a 65-page full-color comic in 2 months.' It became an advantage for me. (I don't want to push myself like this anymore, though... haha.)
Thank you for participating in the survey for the title logo! The survey results leaned towards the left logo. While the left logo was packed with concept, its font style and thickness varied, resulting in imbalance when aligned in a row and making it difficult to use in monochrome. If the left logo had overwhelmingly won the votes, I would have chosen it. However, since the right logo also received a considerable number of votes, I decided to adopt the right logo.
Now all that's left is to see the results on Global Comic Award. I'm really aiming to win. Both the script and the art are amateur-level when viewed separately, but I balanced them out to make them good enough.
It's my first comic work... I really want a lot of people to read it! *If enough people like the comic and want to get a copy of the comic book, I can make and sell it:)

what are, in your opinion, the best ships involving Sannyo? I'm easily influenced by canon so I'd say mamizou is pretty good. i saw what you said about seiga and while it's true i hate seiga with a passion
[All art used is sited with the reliant link at the bottom]
Truth be told, I'm not much of a shipper personally, but I have a lot of fun seeing it from different people and thinking about where it comes from.
But this will be fun. So fun, that im going to take this thought way further than i need to. Hopefully I'll have a good number of ships by the time I'm done over analyzing this.
(I actually mentioned that about Seiga because its the only time I've ever seen that ship before, let alone seen any art for it, and was thinking up how it happened, it was cute art after all)
There's actually a much more common ship with a similar character chemistry pairing Sannyo with Yachie,
Tumblr media
but this ship makes a bit more sense because not only is Sannyo a dragon fangirl, Yachie even looks a lot like her pipe. In fact, if you used her tail with its length in Touhou 19 you could probably even stretch Yachie into its exact shape, plus a bonus shell.
Tumblr media
(A pretty fun mental picture)
Anyway, the over analysis starts here
______________________
Obligatory Disclaimer:
[Any Readers keep in mind, that even though I said you can think these up using canonical sources as a basis, that does not mean I'm claiming any of them are canonical relationships beyond possible friendships. There are also plenty of other ships that are possible with characters shes not likely to interact with that have just as much potential for cute dynamics]
Ships that can be thought up from the canonical sources.:
Well, first I'll do the ones from Lotus Eaters.
The easiest one to pick is definitely Mamizou. The entirety of Lotus Eaters Chapter 30 was more or less them having a fun and cheeky back and forth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is also Miyoi if you want to think of it that way since they are business partners and it's cute seeing her get both encouraged and picked on by Sannyo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want to really be funny, and really stretch the imagination, you can joke about the Ponytailed Yamawaro with the surprising amount of screen time, since Sannyo helped her cool off when she was yelling, and more or less helped her when she was crying.
Tumblr media
I mean look at that sad face
Tumblr media
Those are the ones from Lotus Eaters.
Now Unconnected Marketeers gives us a few more things to build off of,
Sannyo has a funny back and forth with Sanae, and they both knew about each other before the incident, so that could be interesting.
Tumblr media
(Though people can understandably find interactions with any protagonist to build off of if they see it that way)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next one is since Sannyo lives at Heavens Shelf right beside rainbow dragon cave, Sannyo therefore lives very close by the dragon eater Momoyo too, which is definitely funny.
Tumblr media
A surprisingly popular one is Sannyo with Misumaru, this one makes more sense then you might initially think, it comes from Sannyo's dialog implying she's been asked to keep humans out of rainbow dragon cave by someone. That person could only have been Misumaru. Idk how she'd have met her though. One particular artist really loves this ship
Misumaru doesn't technically live in the dragon cave but she definitely uses it sometimes and they both have some mentor energy going for them. My impression of Misumaru just from in game is she has some really proud but also no nonsense aspects to her personality. So it might be fun to see how she could interact with Sannyo.
Tumblr media
For the same reason of being nearby, people could potentially ship her with Takane. She lives nearby the Yamawaro and they are both business ladies after all. I think the reason I haven't seen that one is Takane is a bit more hard professional and might not have as good of a back and forth with Sannyo. Especially when Takane has the far more obvious option of Nitori.
She lives nearby the Tengu too, so if someone decided that was enough to go on then they could ship her with any Tengu.
She even says "it's no wonder That Tengu has a high opinion of you" to Sanae.
[We can assume "That Tengu" is Megumu but people can definitely interpret that as someone else if they want. I think ive seen someone assume she was talking about Aya back during the Demo even]
Making it possible to have an argument for Megumu, Aya, Hatate, maybe even Momiji. But given Sannyo's : "you don't need to know about that......., actually i don't know either" flavor interactions with protagonists, it might be hilarious to see her interact with the Tengu.
Unfortunately there is no Sannyo x All Tengu picture to use so have the Megumu laugh Scene from Lotus Eaters:
Tumblr media
Thats it for the ships you could extrapolate from UM interactions.
The last ship based on canon sources is Nemuno, they are different versions of the same Yokai species, Nemuno being a Yamanba, and Sannyo being a Yamajorou, a more outgoing version of the species. They both live in the mountains so it's possible for Sannyo to give her a visit if she wants, but Nemuno probably wouldn't travel too far personally.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion:
_________________________________
Finally I'll actually list my favorites:
My favorite ship though is easily with Mamizou. Mamizou and Sannyo had some really fun interactions.
Despite generally not often thinking about Misumaru, I've seen so much cute art of this ship on Pixiv that it makes me kinda like it. They do have compatible personalities so I can't say it's unreasonable.
I feel like she could have potential with Megumu. A Daitengu might be above Sannyo's metaphorical pay grade, but it could be fun. And they apparently are on speaking terms. Plus, you can read Megumu Iizunamaru as Dragon, and thats fun.
[But that's a tough sell, Megumu already is pretty cute with Chimata, has Tsukasa Mythology, and that great running dragon joke with Momoyo]
I think the mental picture of stretching Yachie out into a pipe shape might have sold me on that ship just now too.
So anyway, that's what I came up with for favorites.
Sannyo x Yachie art by: stank
Nemuno fish art by :0-DEN
Nemuno soy sauce by: atoki
Mamizou x Sannyo art by Biyon

An Irani girl named Fatima who’s a captive of the Mongol Empire and uses her education to her advantage???
Hello, my name is Fatimah, I’m half Irani, and it’s finally my time >:)
Tumblr media
I hope you guys are ready for history and cultural lessons! I worked really hard on this post and she’s a long one... I literally just came back from an Iran trip and got some books, took pictures, and consulted people who know more than me for this post (the trip wasn't for the post, that was a coincidence lolllll).
This series won first place in the オンナ編 (Female Category) for the このマンガがすごい!2023 / Kono Manga ga Sugoi 2023 / “This Manga is Amazing! 2023″ which is a rather prestigious award. I’ve talked about the Male Category’s 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners (2nd place will have a dedicated post one day), and plan to talk about the Female Category’s 4th and 6th place winners eventually. I guess I have good taste, what can I say? Jk, jk, but check the links if you’re interested :)
Tumblr media
This post will be broken up into the following sections - What's It About? - Some Background - Representation - My Localization Choices - Story - Art - Culture Time! - Let's Talk Religion - The First Word From God, "Read".
Enjoy!
What's It About?
I usually don't like to go into plot details too much so you can discover the story for yourself. But since it isn't currently accessible in English at all, I figured I’d summarize the first chapter so you at least know what it’s about. Then I’ll summarize the rest of the chapters in a spoiler section for those who are interested. That way, we can all be informed enough to discuss it. I might touch on themes or other things outside the first chapter in the discussion, but I’ll try to do it in a way that doesn’t spoil for those of you who want to wait and read it for yourselves.
Tumblr media
Chapter 1
We kick off with a rather poetic reference to scholars using geometry to measure the earth and the idea of trying to quantify fate. In 13th-century Iran/Persia, in the city of Tous, we meet a family looking for a domestic worker. The family is a woman, Fatima, who is newly widowed, her son, Mohamed, and her brother. A slave trader offers her some options, but they are rather pricey. So he suggests she take a little girl, Sitara, for a heavily discounted price. The slave trader asks Fatima to educate Sitara since they are a scholarly family, so she does.
However, Sitara plays dumb to ensure her value as a slave stays low. That way, no one would bother taking her to faraway lands to sell her for higher prices as she wants to stay close to her home to try and go back. Sitara tries to sneak out and runs into Mohamed, who talks to her about why he thinks learning is so great. He inspires her to pursue an education so she can have the tools to handle whatever life throws at her. Mohamed wants to travel and learn from others to find the "truth" for himself. He promises Sitara that he'll write letters to her and his mother, which further inspires her to learn to read.
The chapter ends with Mohamed leaving Tous, and the narrator tells us it was the last time Mohamed and Sitara ever saw each other.
Chapters 2-5
I'm going to speed through the rest now that we got the setup out of the way.
***SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 2-5***
*
*
*
8 years have passed since Mohamed left and Sitara has been pursuing an education under the direction of Fatima and her brother. While the Tous army is investigating strange activity near their borders, Fatima shows Sitara some things her late husband left behind such as books and astrology tools.
As the Mongols are closing in on Tous, Fatima and Sitara hunker down in a cellar to wait the threat out. Unfortunately, they're found, and one of the Mongol princes takes a book that belonged to Fatima's late husband. Sitara tries to stand up to him, causing her to be attacked. Fatima takes the blow, saying, "Don't touch my daughter," before passing away.
Tous is razed to the ground, and its citizens killed or driven out and forced to march to the Mongol camp. Sitara finds out that the city of Neyshabur, the city Mohamed is studying at, was also attacked. His whereabouts are unknown.
Interestingly, the Mongol prince was specifically looking for the book he took since his fiance had asked him for it. However, the book is in Persian and they are unable to read it. Sitara meets a boy who is interpreting for the Mongols in an effort to make himself more useful to avoid becoming a meat shield in battles for them. While he can speak Mongolian and Persian, he can't read. But, Sitara can. He asks her to team up with him to help each other become more valuable to their capturers. Sitara will read the stolen book, and the boy will translate. He suggests she come up with a more "elegant" or "majestic" name before presenting herself to the Mongol princes. She steps into their tent and introduces herself as "Fatima".

***END OF SPOILERS FOR CHAPTERS 2-5***
Some Background
Quick disclaimer, I'm by no means an expert. A lot of this is what I know and what I've experienced. I might have to make some generalizations or else we're gonna be here all day.
I feel like I’m about to overshare but I want to offer my perspective on this series. I don’t get to do this often so indulge me please lol. This background is so you have an idea of some things that influenced my perspective on this story.
For those of you new around here, I'm a Kuwaiti/Irani-American, Japanese to English translator (I speak English, Arabic, and Japanese).
What that means more specifically is that I've grown up/lived in America my whole life, visiting Kuwait when we could, until I moved to Japan after college. My parents are both Kuwaiti with Kuwaiti fathers, born and raised, but both of their mothers are Irani. They know Farsi to varying degrees of fluency as a second language. I never learned it since their first language is Arabic and that was the language they focused on teaching me while living in America. They usually spoke Farsi if they wanted to keep me and my brother out of a conversation between adults, rude. But I can sometimes pick up on some things being said. One of my best friends is Irani-American (Her name is also Fatimah! It's a ridiculously popular name) and our experiences are quite different, but there's overlap as well!
Tumblr media
For those of you who don't know where Kuwait is. It's a tiny little country in the northern end of the Persian Gulf in Western Asia. FYI "Mina" in "Mina Al Ahmadi," which you can see on the map, means "port".
Most of our Kuwaiti relatives have Irani roots and some Turkish. There are a lot of ethnic groups in Kuwait because it started out as a port city that was a part of the Silk Road network. (I actually wanna study the Silk Road more!) So lots of people from all over gathered there. There are black Kuwaitis, those with blonde hair and blue eyes (my mom's relatives are like this), those with more East Asian features (my cousins), those with darker features (my dad's side), etc.
Tumblr media
The Silk Road in the 1st century, courtesy of Wikipedia. You can see the route going through Kuwait. It was specifically part of the Maritime Silk Road route.
Because of all the trade, you can see the influences of many other regions in the food, clothes, language, culture, and so on.
But, yeah! History is cool.
Representation
I am indeed one of those people who is annoyingly passionate about representation. Like, I could write a whole Master’s dissertation on why it’s so important, but I’ll spare you… for now. More eloquent people have already done so anyways.
As you can imagine, I’m not used to seeing myself represented in media. And any representation I did get, was… well, how do I put this… not great? Bad™ actually. Beyond racist tbh. So can you blame me for being excited? I’m still mad about that one episode of Grey’s Anatomy when that girl whipped off her scarf/hijab to save a patient IN A FULLY STOCKED HOSPITAL!!! That would never fucking happen ;_; like imagine if you pulled your pants off to put pressure on a wound when the gauze is literally right there. I CAN’T, where do I even begin??? But I digress.
And even if I wasn’t a person from this culture, it’s just cool to see rep we don’t usually get! For example, Requiem of the Rose King is fresh in my mind right now, but having an intersex main character is not something I recall seeing. While not intersex myself, nor a noble from ye olde times, I related to Richard a lot and appreciate what the story did. I can see people from other cultures relating to Tenmaku no Jadoogar, or simply just learning new things about a culture we don’t get to see a lot of rep about. (I plan to write a follow-up post after I finish the series and talk about the rep in Rose King a bit more.)
My Localization Choices
There are no official spellings for this manga, so some explanations as to why I wrote things the way I did. Thankfully, these are all real-world names with context, so I'm not pulling nonsense out of thin air. Localizing uncommon/made-up names is... hard... traumatic flashbacks to when I had to look up official spellings for Gundam and Kamen Rider and the client didn't give me glossaries... Literally did research about Sypha Belnandes' name localization being all over the place for this blog post. Spoiler, I don’t think it was supposed to be Belnandes.
Tumblr media
It really be like that...
Sitara - シタラ "Shitara". This isn't a name I was familiar with, so I asked my mom and Irani-American friend if it sounded like a name they knew. I wanted to say "Sitra" sounds like something that has a more "West Asian pronunciation" than the Japanese pronunciation in the manga. I was wrong and it's "Sitara" which means "star" just like what they said in the story.
Fatima - ファーティマ "Fātima". Same as my name! It's a super popular name. I katakana-fied my name as ファティーマ, which is the same, I just put the dash that elongates the sound in a different place. Why? Fatima is an Arabic name فَاطِمَة. In classical Arabic, it's pronounced like Fā-dtee-ma or Fadt-ma in Kuwaiti Arabic (the letter طِ doesn't exist in EN/JP and the best way I can describe it is it's like D+T sound.) An Irani pronunciation is more like Fā-teh-meh, which is what my grandma and Irani-American friends call me. In English, I personally pronounce my name like Fa-tee-ma, but people have various preferences. So basically, I took the Arabic and English pronunciations and katakana-fied it how I thought it would sound best in Japanese. And no one has ever pronounced my name wrong in Japan since katakana is phonetic and is actually pronounced how it's spelled. Wild I know. Meanwhile in America... *cries* I have a half-Irani-half-Japanese acquaintance who doesn't put any elongated sound in her name like ファティマ, and it's all just preference tbh. There are also different ways you can spell it in English, but "Fatima" is the most common way.
Mohamed - モハンマド "Mohanmado". This one is pretty straightforward. I think most people are familiar with this name. Also super popular. There are various English spellings as well, so I just went with a common, shorter spelling.
The title, 天幕のジャードゥーガル Tenmaku no Jadougal (this is how it's romanized on anilist), also doesn't have an official translation. It basically translates to Witch of the Marquee. Tenmaku="tent/marquee" in Japanese. ジャードゥーガル comes from جادوگر "jadoogar" meaning "witch" in Farsi. The romanization of the title should actually be Tenmaku no Jadoogar. There is no "L" in Japanese, so it often becomes "R". In Japanese, ジャードゥーガル is "Jādoogaru". Without context, it's often hard to tell if it's supposed to be "L" or "R" so I don't blame them for the mistake. But yeah, that's why I wrote it as Tenmaku no Jadoogar for the title at the top of the post. How do I contact the anilist admins about correcting that? Lol. The way my brain is short-circuiting trying to combine Japanese, English, my nonexistent Arabic reading skills since Farsi uses basically the same alphabet, and consulting my Farsi "sources"... my brain can only handle two of the three languages I speak at the same time...
1/7/23 EDIT: I asked anilist to fix the spelling of the title and it's been changed!
Tumblr media
Shout out to Fatimah #2 for putting up with all my questions <3 Farsi has some extra letters that aren't in Arabic and I didn't know about that one...
Story
I’m starting to realize that I really dig historical fiction. Things like Requiem of the Rose King (current read, I'm obsessed), Vinland Saga, Bride’s Story (a priority TBR of mine), and Ertugrul (this one is a Turkish drama, highly recommend!) are so fascinating because we get to take a peek at what life used to be like, especially if the author did their homework. This story reminds me of Ertugrul at times since they both take place in West Asia during the 13th century, and the characters in both had run-ins with the Mongols.
Tumblr media
This baddie took out three Mongolian soldiers on her own!!! Well, her horse helped. Horses are great. I'm a horse girl, literally took riding lessons for ~4 years.
I found out while researching for this post that this story is in fact based on a real person in history! Here's the Wikipedia page, more info here by Dr. Jack Weatherford who wrote a book that I'm totally going to read once I can get my hands on it. I think this manga is going in a similar vein as Vinland Saga where the events are real historical events, and some characters were actual people in history, but the author is going to take creative liberties. (Check out Merphy Napier and Philip Chase's Vinland Saga discussions. They're great and Philip has a lot of historical knowledge relevant to that series that's super informative!)
The characters are lovable and interesting. I like Sitara's spunk, Mohamed's thoughtfulness, and Fatima's gentle nature, just to name a few. The relationship Sitara has with Mohamed and Fatima was very sweet. I'm interested to see how the relationship that I mentioned at the end of chapter 5 goes. Also intrigued by the bits of relationship dynamics with the Mongolian characters we have so far.
I got super excited when the theme of "learning/education" came up. Seeing how that looked back in 13th-century Persia, which was a hotspot for advances in many fields, is so cool! This story led me to do some research and asking around on topics I was familiar with, but not an expert on, and I learned things about my own culture/religion. More on learning and education later. But overall, a strong start and I can't wait to read more!
Art
Tumblr media
My twitter reading thread for this series
The art is very stylized, like a chibi-esque style with Persian art influences. I like the contrast between the simplified shapes and the detailed bits. I’m a big fan of inky blacks and white whites. I know all manga is black and white but this one feels like it has more contrast due to the simplified shapes. It's got tons of charm!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shoujo-esque flowery background, but make it Irani-flavored✨ It looks like the rug we got in Iran!

Some pictures I took at historical sites in Tehran with more examples of flowery imagery. Sorry if the image quality sucks, I didn't have my good camera :(
Culture Time!
As soon as I saw this cover, I felt a sense of familiarity. Particularly, the style of henna on her hands made me go, “Hey! That’s similar to how we do our henna!” While we also do the mehndi style henna (Is that the right term? Help) in Kuwait because of Indian influences due to longtime trade, we have another kind as well. You take the paste and hold it in your hands while curling your fingertips into it.
I had such a hard time finding pics that weren’t the intricate mehndi design ones. I would’ve just put henna on my own hands and taken a pic to show what I’m talking about, but it’s winter and it’s not good to use henna in winter because it has a cooling effect. I put henna on in winter once, and it made me so much colder. But makes you feel nice and cool in the summer! That’s why it’s traditionally applied to the head, hands, and feet, which are places you have a lot of heat dissipate from and it saps the heat away. I remember my mom doing that for me and my brother all the time when we were little during summer.
But! With the help of my mom, she helped me narrow it down. I didn't know the actual name of this style of henna. I just called it Kuwaiti-style henna lol. Apparently, it's حنه قصعة henna gasa'a, and bingo!
Tumblr media
It doesn't show super well here, but the tops of the fingertips are also dyed like on the cover of the manga. Love that nazar ring though, so cute! 🧿
Tumblr media
This is the mehndi style henna that people are most familiar with.
Tumblr media
When I was little, I assumed that henna was made from soil because there are soils that can dye things a reddish color. But it's actually from a plant! The leaves are ground into a powder and then made into a paste when you want to use it.
Health, cleanliness, and hygiene are big deals in Islam. Other than being used for beauty and it’s cooling effect, henna is also used to keep oneself clean and smelling nice. It’s said that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) utilized henna as well.
I actually didn't know much about Iran's henna culture. When I asked my Irani-American friend whose family is from Tehran (northern Iran), she said she wasn't familiar with any. But like Kuwait, Iran has a lot of ethnic groups. It's also a large region (it used to be a whole empire and all that, too), so there are definitely people who do use it!
Tumblr media
Turkmen Iranis, dying their fingertips with henna, exactly like in the manga! My family are Turk, too! (From a book I picked up a few days ago in Iran, "Nomads: Migrating with Swallows". What a pretty title...)
The clothing of the characters also felt very familiar. The cover of volume one reminded me of this picture:
Tumblr media
Maku Kurd girl ("Nomads: Migrating with Swallows")
Iran grows tons of fruit, herbs, and flowers, famously roses! Rose water is a staple we pretty much always had at home.
Rose water is used for medicinal purposes and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities. People often wash up with it since it has a lovely fragrance and makes you smell nice. It's also used in foods and desserts or added to drinking water for flavor and health benefits.
Tumblr media
Sitara bringing Fatima rose water. It looks just like this 12th-century rose water container. We still have containers like this nowadays and I actually used one to wash my hands recently.
Tumblr media
Faloodeh (Persian Lime and Rose Water Granita With Rice Noodles), Bastani Sonati (Saffron and Rose Water Ice Cream), in Kuwait we say Sharbat Nimil but apparently, it's Tokhm-e Sharbatie in Iran (Rose Water and Basil Seed Drink) Fun fact: Sharbat Nimil means "ant drink" because the seeds look like... ants... and the thought freaked me out as a kid, I never wanted to drink it. I thought my aunt was messing with me but my parents said, "Yeah, no, that's actually what it's called."
Dates! Another staple. Always have some in the house.
Tumblr media
These are ripe dates. We call them "tamar". Sweet, delicious, amazing.
Tumblr media
These are fresh dates! We call them "khalal". Sweet, crunchy, amazing.
The architecture was also, you guessed it, familiar as well. Particularly the courtyards! It really took me back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Courtyards! My Irani grandma (also Fatima, I told you it was a popular name...) had a courtyard home in Kuwait too, but less fancy, and she had a huge date tree instead of a fountain. We would play there all the time when we visited. Also reminds me of the houses in some of the Irani movies I've seen.
Let's Talk Religion
I know religion is historically always a fun and totally not divisive topic, but we're all going to be civil and discuss stuff like adults. I'm not trying to convert anyone, I swear. Chasing after people and forcing religion down their throats is actually frowned upon in Islam believe it or not. I’m also not saying it’s a better religion than others or anything of the sort so don’t come for me. It's just relevant to the story and I'm hoping we can interact in good faith, so let's talk.
I am NOT a scholar, this is just what I know and my understanding so please don't quote me. I probably have to gloss over and simplify a lot because there's... too much.
There are various interpretations of Islam. The Quran, to my understanding, is meant to have its interpretations evolve over time to address the issues of people no matter the time or place. Issues faced centuries ago might not be as pressing now, or we might have new issues today that weren't a thing back in the day. Iranians mainly practice Shia Islam, which is also the sect I know most about so that's what we're focusing on.
Islam is the fastest-growing religion. It's also quite misunderstood due to hate/misinformation, AND — I'm gonna just say it, there are Muslims who have skewed interpretations of Islam's teachings. Am I the perfect Muslim and my interpretations are law? I didn't say that, obviously not. But I'm going to call it how I see it. I don't take sides and I'm not going to defend someone just because they identify as Muslim if they're doing stuff that doesn't make sense (that would be un-Islamic and just... dumb imo). But anyways, there are a few points I’d like to touch on so we all have a base understanding.
Many people think that Allah (SWT) is “the Muslim god” but actually, he’s the same god that brought down the Bible and Torah. He's just... God. This is why you’ll see a lot of crossover between these religions. And Christian Arabs, for example, say Allah because that’s just God in Arabic.
Why did God come up with different religions? It’s my understanding each religion was what the people needed at the time. (Also because of the next point)
Muslims DO believe in the original Bible and Torah, but historically there's evidence that these books have been altered by people over the years. (Again, I'm not saying your religion is wrong if you're Christian or Jewish. You do you.) Then what about the Quran? I’ll actually address that later.
Muslims DO believe in Jesus. We just think he's a prophet instead of the son of God or God.
Cool? Cool.
Now to address some religion-related things that came up in the story.
The part where there is the selling of slaves made me raise an eyebrow since slavery is not allowed in Islam, because, duh.
Tumblr media
I did some research and asked around. I was able to talk to my Irani-American friend's aunt when I visited them during my Iran trip last week since she's studied this kind of stuff. She joked that I should save myself the trouble and not touch the slavery topic, especially with Americans since it's... like... a super touchy topic. But this is an important topic and we should talk about important topics instead of shying away from them — respectfully, of course. And maybe we can all learn something. It was a perspective on slavery that was very different from what I'm used to hearing about in America. She essentially confirmed what I was thinking.
The Quran envisions the ideal society as one in which slavery no longer exists. Since slavery was such a widespread issue around the whole world back in the olden days, (it still is an issue today, but I'm assuming it was worse back then) it was unfortunately unrealistic to try and abolish it in one fell swoop. Again, this isn’t just abolishing in one country or region, but tackling the issue worldwide. So, in Islam, the idea is that there are steps in place to phase it out. For example:
No free people can be enslaved, duh.
People cannot be enslaved due to debt or crime.
You are encouraged to help slaves buy their way to freedom by giving them money to do so or buying them to free them.
If you are in possession of a slave, you should free them.
If you house a slave, you must treat them well.
This last one is just an interesting thing I didn’t know about that I saw in my research and it came up in the story — Slaves get half the punishment for a sin than if the same sin was committed by a free person.
I wondered why then, did Fatima's family, not free Sitara and the other slaves? It didn’t look like they had anything stopping them from running away either. Sure, Sitara got scolded by another slave for trying to leave, but she could have tried again and run away. The other slaves in the story seemed like they wanted to/were okay with staying, even though they did wish they could go home and felt homesick. So what’s up?
It's my understanding that back then, it was common for people to take slaves into their families, offer shelter and educate them. It was a way to take them off the streets, away from the slave traders, and keep them safe.
Why not just take everyone back to their homes? Various reasons. They might be in danger if they try to go back. They might not have anywhere to go back to. Also, this was the 13th century. It's not like they could just hop on a plane and go home. There's also no law enforcement the way we have today. Hell, even with all the local and international law enforcement of today, slavery is still a major issue.
Tumblr media
Sitara wants to go home but has no home to go back to.
Is this ideal? As I mentioned, ideally slavery wouldn't even be a thing. I’m pretty sure we can all agree slavery=bad. I'm not here to argue that. But I also think it's important to try and understand what things were like back then and why people did what they did. A lot of times I see people measure things with their standards that were developed in modern day, with their own life experience. You need to be careful when doing that. I'm sure in the future, people will look back at us like, "Damn, y'all lived like that???"
Perhaps, this was the best the average person could do. Try to protect them and offer them shelter and an education. As long as we don’t live in an ideal world, we need to consider various solutions to issues. So this was an interesting way to try and tackle the issue given the time and circumstances. It’s rather different from what I think most Americans know about this subject.
Did everyone do this? I'm going to say probably not. Terrible people always exist. Plus there are plenty of people who say they practice a religion, but cherry-pick what they want to follow, do the opposite, have distorted understandings of its teachings, or just downright weaponize religion to suit them. That's a whole other discussion though, so I'll leave it there.
I would like to read more about this topic though, so if anyone knows any sources, let me know!
The First Word From God - "Read"
Tumblr media
"Slave or not, it is a Muslim's duty to seek knowledge, as stated in the hadiths."
Tumblr media
What's a hadith? Here you go. Also, this is the OG Fatima, Lady Fatima (PBUH).
When God first sent the angel Gabriel down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his first word to him was, "read". Education and seeking knowledge are SUPER important in Islam, and should not be kept from anyone regardless of race, gender, etc. Seeking knowledge will make you a more rational, well-rounded person. Knowledge in this context is broad and all-encompassing. It doesn't only mean religion, math, and science, but philosophy, art, and so on. Literally anything. I hope I don't really need to convince anyone that education is a human right and empowering and all that stuff, so let's keep it moving.
Tumblr media
"Isn't that what learning is all about?"
To address this earlier point:
Muslims DO believe in the original Bible and Torah, but historically there's evidence that these books have been altered by people over the years. Then what about the Quran?
Tbh, I hesitated to include this part because people might misinterpret or take offense. To reiterate for the umpteenth time, I'm not saying your religion is wrong if you're Christian or Jewish. You do you. We’re actually told to respect believers of these religions. I swear!
So, yeah. Moving on.
Another reason seeking knowledge is an obligation in Islam is so that you are able to read the Quran for yourself. When loads of people read it, memorize it, and are familiar with it, any changes will not go unnoticed. This is to stop people from weaponizing and distorting the Quran's teachings. And this is why there is only ONE Quran, and not multiple versions (I’m not talking about translated Qurans).
In general, having knowledge about things makes you less susceptible to being lied to or misled, regardless of the topic. Unfortunately, I'm in the camp where I believe not enough people do their own research and reading. And again, I don't just mean religion, but everything. That kind of thing takes effort, and effort is hard.
Go read!
You're Still Here?
Like the first-place winner for the Male Category, The Summer Hikaru Died, which I’ve been pushing on anyone who will listen since volume one hit bookstores in Japan, Tenmaku no Jadoogar: A Witch's Life in Mongol deserves to win the Female Category. From what I can see so far, it’s well researched and written with love. I'm looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds and I may add more thoughts as we go.
Volume 2 is due to come out February 16th, so I’ll be tweeting my thoughts on my reading thread. The link to this post is on Twitter here if you want to share it there. EDIT: Volume 2 post is up!
If there's anything else you'd like to see me discuss or expand on, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I'd love to hear what others think!

Where it all started...
Platypus, the preserver of manga history, showed this page he scanned from a 1978 issue of Monthly Manga Shounen (月刊マンガ少年) to me. It was great seeing a manga artist, Minamoto Tarou, acknowledged the importance of Fire! even back then, and hailed it as the grandmother of the 70s bishounen manga.
Here's a quick translation for you.
Tumblr media
Monthly Manga Shounen, issue no. 1978/8
Minamoto Tarou
Speaking of show business, when I was watching Yamaguchi Momoe sing “Playback” on TV the other day, I was suddenly reminded of Takakura Ken’s youth. Her dreamy gaze when she sings, how she looks slightly bashful when her song ends... She was almost the spitting image of Ken-san of the past. Is it that there’s something "manly" in a woman’s charm? Or does a man’s masculinity has something akin to femininity? ...And it brings me to the topic of male-male romance manga drawn by women. Things took off after manga like Mo-sama’s “Gymnasium” or “Thomas”, and Takemiya Keiko-shi’s “Yuki to Hoshi to Tenshi to.” And until now, there has been a plethora of works in that vein, and every magazine you pick up today sure to be full of such works. But when did it really start? When I think about it, Mizuno Hideko-shi shines bright. Yes, I'm talking about “Fire!” “For the first time in my life, I loved someone more than I did my mother: Fire Wolf.” Didn’t this whole world came to be in young Aaron’s cries as he was breaking down in tears  before the flames of the explosion that killed Wolf? This is what I think.

I've been updating my site and reorganizing some shorter comics. Decided to collect a bunch into one set... putting this on pixiv for now while I try to get the site finished. These are from 2020-2022. I've had these online for a while but didn't really tell anyone and didn't really like the way I set them up originally.

(Voted 10th-most-popular-character on the jpn server in a combination of seven different character-ranking surveys held throughout 2021)
Silver is often at Malleus’ side as his bodyguard, but just as often loses track of him. Unlike Sebek, Silver believes that it is important to give Malleus time to be on his own without a chaperone, which is a point that the two disagree on and about which they often argue.
In his school uniform, Silver stresses over a represent he receives from Sebek and his potential “failure to understand Malleus-sama’s feelings” when he recommends that he and Sebek allow Malleus to move from one class to another without an escort, as he thinks that being constantly at his side “within the campus grounds is going too far, personally. Malleus-sama deserves some time to himself, does he not?”
For this, Sebek scolds him for suggesting such an “act of supreme negligence”. Worried that he has hurt Malleus’ feelings, Silver confides in Kalim, saying he wasn’t even able to eat his favorite risotto at lunch because he was so worried about having offended Malleus. When Kalim reveals that he is unable to keep track of his own classes, textbooks or homework without notes and constant reminders from Jamil, Silver thanks him, saying, “You’ve made me see that indeed, being overprotective must be avoided at all costs.”
He is not talkative. He is comfortable with listening while others share their opinions, rarely ever speaking negatively. He is calm and careful when judging a situation, and can be depended upon to make the most level-headed decisions in an emergency. When asked if he has a favorite flower he says “Not particularly. There is good in everything.”
He wishes to, one day, become even stronger than his father, Lilia: capable of protecting the people he needs to protect, however and wherever they may need him. For this reason he is strict with himself about his physical training, swordsmanship and whatever other forms of training he decides will help him achieve this goal.
Tumblr media
Silver’s magical pen is somewhat different from that of other magic users: it is large and detailed with black horns and thorns. He carries his pen strapped to a belt at his waist, as it is too large to fit into the jacket pocket of his uniform, where other students carry theirs. At a glance, it is easy to mistake it for a sword.
While he tries to avoid doing so in public, he refers to Lilia as “Father” in private, and he rarely smiles when he isn’t with (or talking about) Lilia. Lilia adopted Silver after finding him alone in the forest and named him for his hair color (there is some debate as to whether his birthday is the actual date of his birth, or the day that Lilia found him).
In his birthday vignette, Silver says that he and Sebek have been undergoing strict training regimes together since they were small, so “it wouldn’t be incorrect to refer to us as siblings”, and that they have known one another for ten years.
Sebek does have his own parents and siblings who are his blood-relations, unlike orphan Silver, but Silver tells is that Sebek’s grandfather and Lilia are close friends and, one day, Lilia showed up with a young Sebek, saying he and Silver were to be pupils together going forward. It seems it was often just the three of them together, with Malleus occasionally sneaking a visit.
Silver says he never went to school, being tutored entirely by Lilia, with visits from Sebek and Malleus being his only opportunities to meet people besides Lilia himself before enrolling at NRC.
He often speaks of Lilia, whom he adores. Silver explains that he originally thought that Lilia was his biological father, until he realized that their ears are different. When he asked about it, Lilia responded, “You hadn’t noticed?” and began to laugh. Confused, Silver immediately ran away, and Lilia had to search in the rain to find him. When they finally returned home, Silver collapsed with a fever. Lilia nursed him back to health, always smiling, and from that day Silver no longer cared about blood ties, happy to be his father’s only son.
Silver is not particularly concerned with his appearance, but he is always certain to be presentable and dressed appropriately. Lilia cuts his hair (when he does not cut it himself).
Silver is constantly falling asleep during his classes and even his physical training, no matter how much black coffee he drinks. He claims it’s not because he wants to sleep and, while he wishes to overcome the issue, he does not know why it happens. He says that he has seen doctors who have been unable to identify the source of his sudden sleepiness.
Tumblr media
In his labwear vignette, when Jamil points out how very odd he is, Silver agrees, saying, “What am I?” This was changed on ENG-server to “if only I could figure out what that means”.
Animals are very fond of him. When looking for a plant to use in a potion to keep himself awake, birds and rabbits hurry to give Silver the plant he seeks. Silver explains, “Ever since I was a kid, any time I got lost or just felt discouraged when training went poorly, animals would come up and help me.”
Floyd refers to him as “Kurage-chan”, meaning jellyfish, and Rook calls him “Monsieur O-nebou”, meaning sleepyhead.
Tumblr media
Silver can be naive, taking the things he’s told at face-value and interpreting them in a positive light, which can result in communication issues with those around him. In Leona’s ceremonial robes vignette (seen above), Ruggie explains that when Silver and Kalim are together, they create an “irritating fluffy space” (いらふわ空間) where the two of them are so optimistic and air-headed that it annoys everyone nearby.
Silver and Kalim are fairly close friends, and their personalities mesh well (they have a lot in common, such as both having a lot of cosmic-based magic attacks*).
Silver is grateful to Kalim for teaching him things that everyone else seems to know, that Silver—as someone with an unconventional upbringing away from the influence of the outside world—does not.
Idia refers to Silver as “a rare type in this school”.
Tumblr media
While growing up in the Valley of Thorns, Lilia would take a commemorative photo of him every year on his birthday, alongside Malleus and Sebek (who would visit to celebrate with them). They continued this tradition upon enrolling in Night Raven College, and Silver has the picture on display on the desk in his dorm room. Silver describes the photograph as “a wonderful birthday present. I wouldn’t trade it for anything”. He also has several clocks in his room to help keep him from oversleeping, as well as a bag of bird seed on his desk.
Silver first noticed when Sebek surpassed him in height when standing for a commemorative birthday picture together, but he does not particularly care.
Sebek, on the other hand, is very proud of being asked to fetch objects from high shelves that Silver cannot reach.
Silver assumes that this is because Sebek genuinely enjoys getting things down from high places, so even though Silver can fetch things from up high by himself via magic, he is always certain to ask for Sebek’s help, as it seems to make Sebek so happy.
Tumblr media
When asked “How is life at the school different from your home?”, Silver expresses surprise at all the electrical appliances, which are rare in the Valley of Thorns, where most homes do not have electrical outlets. He says in his master chef vignette that he has never used any electronic appliances in cooking before and, in his birthday vignette, that he is “amazed at how brightly lit everything is after the sun sets. It was pitch dark in the woods where I’m from.”
He also explains that he was surprised by how good the food tastes, as—growing up—he had no choice but to eat Lila’s cooking. “Father…Lilia-senpai’s cooking is creative. He will look up a recipe, but not follow it as he cooks.”
Tumblr media
Silver is not a picky eater and he is an accomplished cook, so long as he doesn’t attempt any cuisine (like stews) that require a significant investment of time, as he will fall asleep in the middle of the process.
He has said he often receives bedding on his birthday, as people tend to assume that the reason he falls asleep throughout the day is because he does not sleep well enough at night. As a result, he has become familiar with many different variations and brands of pillows.
He has a naturally stern-looking expression, but this is unintentional and he is unaware of it. In-game, Vil refers to his eyes as “the color of the aurora”.
Tumblr media
Rumor While unconfirmed, there is a rumor that he may be based on Prince Philip’s “Sword of Truth”, from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (his icon on the loading screen is a sword), but he also has characteristics of Aurora herself, such as falling asleep against his will and attracting small woodland creatures. It is possible that Silver is in fact the only “Disney princess” enrolled at Night Raven College (as opposed to Royal Sword Academy, where the rest of them congregate).
This raises the question, however, of why he was chosen by the mirror for the world of villains--or even if he was chosen at all, or if Lilia convinced Crowley in one way or another to allow his enrollment.
Which brings us to another point The other two characters with a plethora of cosmic attacks are related to characters who were not true villains in their respective movies. Kalim, presumably based on the sultan, was hypnotized in the Aladdin movie by the villain to perform evil deeds, but was not, himself, maliciously villainous. Similarly, the hunter in Snow White—the basis for Rook—was employed by the movie’s villain and commanded to perform evil deeds, but ultimately refused and redeemed himself.
This illustrates that having a dotted-line association with the movie’s villain seems to be good enough for the mirror, or at least for Crowley, who has overridden the Mirror's decisions in the past (re: Kalim's enrollment, Rook's dorm assignment).
But that doesn’t help explain Silver, as neither the Sword of Truth nor Aurora can be associated—indirectly or otherwise—with aiding in a villain’s scheme. A certain live-action Disney movie insinuates that it is indeed Aurora who can be proven to have a deeper relationship to her movie’s villain than one would think, but while the game’s connections to the original animated movies are obvious, the amount of influence from the live action remakes is more unclear.
Tumblr media
And for further puzzling: In January of 2020, part of the early promotion for the game involve the official twst_jp account on Twitter posting short videos introducing the characters of each dorm. You had to retweet the video in order to play it, and it listed a still image of each character in the chosen dorm, one by one, and played a line of dialogue by that character.
I found the original promotional tweet, played the video and Silver’s line of dialogue is “That’s strange…I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before”.
Tumblr media
We already know that the player character sees Disney movies in their sleep. If this is a “I’ve walked with you once upon a dream” reference, it seems pretty safe to say that Silver might be 1/4th sword, but he’s easily 3/4ths Aurora.
Some great artists for Silver fan-art and more (SFW, no story spoilers) ・One cute comic and
Another cute comic about Lilia and Silver during Silver’s childhood (including the “forest in the rain” scene described above)
A mixed bag of illustrations including characters from all dorms, but heavily Silver/Sebek/Lilia
Outfit designs for Silver and Sebek
Lilia is the most supportive dad
Voice Silver is voiced by Shimazaki Nobunaga (島﨑 信長), whose other work includes Free! (2013 - 2018), Ace of Diamond (2013 - 2020), World Trigger (2015 - 2022), Fate/Grand Order (2016 - 2020), Assassination Classroom (2016), Lupin the 3rd (2018, 2019, 2021), Sword Art Online (2018) and Fruits Basket (2019 - 2022)

I've always thought it was strange there wasn't any manga about Elisabeth giving how popular she (or at least the musical) is in Japan. Well it turns out THERE ARE. Like, many, in fact.
First we have Elisabeth by Kumi Morikawa! A single volume adaptation of the musical, published in 1996 (I think?). There seem to be two editions of it:

Then we have Tomoko Naka's two volumes-long Uruwashi no Kouhi Elisabeth, published also in 1996 (right and middle pictures). I couldn't find the plot of this series, but I suppose it's just an adaptation of Elisabeth's life. There is also a single volume edition that came out in the early 2000s (left picture):

The art looks pretty!!

Leaving the 90s shoujo behind, in 2017 the empress was once again depicted in a manga (a seinen this time): Cuvie's Erzsébet!

Swords?? Guns??? Yuri vibes???? Whatever this is sign me up!
In this story we follow Ida (not Ferenczy but clearly inspired in her), a Hungarian independentist infiltrated in Elisabeth's entourage to reclute her for the cause. The series ended at the beginning of 2020, closing with a total of three volumes The first chapter is available for free (in Japanese) so I might do a live reading blog of it because just the first four pages are absolutely BONKERS.
And lastly as a bonus, let's go back to the 90s with Hideko Mizuno's Elisabeth!
Tumblr media
Now this Elisabeth isn't the Empress, but her granddaughter Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Austria, Crown Prince Rudolf's daughter. Published between 1993 and 1996, this series covers the infamous life of the "Red Archduchess". Mizuno had years before written a manga series about Ludwig II that sadly got cancelled after only two volumes, so for her this was a comeback to a familiar era.
Now this is the sad part in which I tell you that none of these mangas has an English translation, not even fan translations. The fact that I had not even come across these until I searched "マンガ 皇妃エリザベート " shows how little diffusion these works had outside Japan, which is such a pity. Let's hope that at least a scanlation group gets interested in any of these one day!

Where to buy raws and manga
Hi fellow Raise fans! Thank you for the follows and reblogs. Can't say enough how much we appreciate knowing our work, however imperfect, is appreciated. We will keep doing our best!
Tumblr media
While you wait for the next update, and if you can afford to do so, we hope you'll consider purchasing the raws or physicals of the manga. It's so good that it's worth owning, we think, and if you can afford it you won't regret it!
With that in mind, we have some resources for you.
Please note: These are not affiliate links and clicking on them does not benefit us in anyway, nor should it (because that would be very illegal, fam). This is for you in case you are inclined or are able to buy this fantastic manga!
Digital
For Japanese: Click on the bold underlined text links and enable your browser to translate. If you are using Chrome there is a free translation extension in the Microsoft store.
For a monthly manga subscription: Kodansha Afternoon has a really nice monthly magazine which includes Raise and other manga.
For single chapters: Kodansha has the COMIC DAYS site. New members get 100 coins to start-- each chapter is between 60 and 80 coins. Chapter 1 is free and more recent chapters are free for a short time a few months after their release.
For ENG (US only):
For single chapters: Kodansha's app K MANGA. One of our friends on the RWTGI fandom Discord tested it and you can get the first 9 chapters for free, another 3 for free around 13-14, and every month or so they unlock another chapter. For $1 you get 99 tickets to 'rent' a chapter (like you own it but you can only read it on the app, isn't Digital Rights Management fun?), you can also 'earn' tickets each time you log in, and currently they have a promotion going.
Unfortunately this is only available to US residents as of this writing. If you have Twitter, give Kodansha a shout and let them know what complete bollocks/bullshit this is: KMANGA_KODANSHA
Physicals
Please note:
Volumes 1-6 are now available for purchase
Volume 7 releasing 4/2/2024
Volume 8 TBD
Earlier volumes are often discounted up to 25%. Click bolded text to be taken directly to RWTGI book pages or other helpful information as noted.
Barnes & Noble Amazon Seven Seas Publishing (the license owner) Penguin Random House
Kinokuniya is a Japanese bookseller with locations in 12 countries (includes the UK, southeast Asia, Australia, and the US). They carry Japanese and licensed English volumes. Pre-orders can sometimes come with a premium like an art sketch. Click for locations worldwide. They ship!
Secondhand volumes are available on Walmart's site, Thriftbooks, and Alibris. They are also availble from various eBay sellers.
While you're at it, consider getting a copy of Konishi's first work, Haru no Noroi. It's a great story and a heartstring-tugging read.
Here's where we cover our asses: Don't repost our work, don't retranslate it, don't make us another casualty of copyright law. Be chill so we can just enjoy this thing together. Thanks!
Happy shopping and thanks for your support! 💞
