Video time-lapse (from sketch to finish): https://youtu.be/9QhzdAtgZv0
Since last week was about "cute", and the week before was "crazy", today is all about "cool".
The character for this week is Millia Rage from Guilty Gear, whom I played extensively when Xrd Sign dropped (super cheap).
I went for a very high contast, back-lit scenario (with some reflected light from the sky giving the slight form changes), something I've never tried before. I was soul searching for some time trying a bunch of different ideas but none of them really stuck. Either they were too close to something I've painted before, too muddy or not visually interesting enough.
Something I always find hard is to know "when something is finished", and I had to do a lot of back-tracking on this one because I had polished it in a direction that I really didn't like.
Richard Schmidt writes in his book Alla Prima:
"One of the most frustrating, but genuine truths I have learned in my 50 years of painting is this -- that beyond a given point, usually just past the block-in, most additional work tends to weaken the strength of my painting. That clear fact argues soundly for getting it right at the start"
Now, obviously, I don't get it "right at the start" and I'm no Schmidt, but it's still a quote I very much agree with. Polishing to death is a very real thing, and while a lot of people like the super clean look I rebel against it. I want to mention that I am not using this as an excuse or "clutch" to try and explain away my deficiencies -- they are very much there and plain in sight.
