RD 3-11: Just Cause

a.k.a. the infamous “I had to tie him to the bed” scene.

summary:

both convey a similar feeling; the exact words are different

unfortunately the Japanese does not confirm Reybarn BDSM; the tying to the bed is entirely in the English. Tibarn does force Reyson into a bed, though, and unlike in the English, he doesn’t say “I’m just kidding”

Ike is very confused when Tibarn shows up without Reyson.

“Rafiel is a proper heron” - Tibarn

Ike shows us a bit of his opinions about what’s important in life, and it jibes with Reyson pretty well

(disclaimer: Tibarn has the most annoying speech to read of any Tellius character, and I don’t understand half of what he says sometimes. It’s so riddled with slang and is Extremely Masculine and that tends not to be the Japanese I hear irl. there are ** around the lines I was unsure about.)

English localization:

Tibarn: Hey, sorry to keep you waiting. I had a little thing back at camp that I had to deal with.

Ike: No problem, Tibarn. What kind of thing? Oh, and hey, where’s Reyson?

Tibarn: He was exhausted, but he insisted on coming with me. I had to tie him down to a bed to keep him there.

Ike: Really?

Tibarn: Nah, I’m just kidding. He passed out earlier. So I have a different anchor slowing me down this time.

Leanne: (Tibarn! You’re horrible! I am not an anchor!)

Ike: Leanne?

Leanne: I...um, I will...fight. Yes?

Tibarn: She’s Reyson’s sister, for sure. The girl is as stubborn as he is! ▼Listen up, young lady. You herons are supposed to be more like Rafiel. Quiet and graceful and all that.

Ike: Don’t mind Tibarn, Leanne. We’re honored to have you here.

▼[アイク] ……リュシオンは、一緒じゃないのか？......Reyson’s not with you?

▼[ティバーン]もういいかげん、やばい状態だったんでな。無理やり寝台に押し込んできた。**He wanted to, but he was in no condition to come.** I had to force him into to bed.

▼[ティバーン]で、代わりについて来ちまったおまけがこれだ。Well, instead of him, I’ve got a different extra [weight] with me.

▼[アイク]リアーネ！？Leanne!?

▼[リアーネ]((((((アイク様！Lord Ike!))))))▼え…と……わたし…がんば、ます！よ…しく。Lord Ike! Um... I... do best! Yes?

▼[アイク]あ、あぁ……いいのか、本当に？Ah... Is that really okay?

▼[ティバーン](((((まったく… ))))))リュシオンと同じで言いだしたらきかねえんだよ。▼鷺の民は本来、ラフィエルみたいな奴が正当なんだがなあ…… (((((Seriously...))))) She’s exactly like Reyson. You of the heron tribe are supposed to be like Rafiel. He’s a proper heron.

▼[アイク]まあ、いいんじゃないか？はかなく頼りないより、活きがいいほうが。Well, isn’t it good? Being active in life is better than being helpless and ephemeral...

Ike’s last sentence amuses me because it’s said with a hedging tone of, “I know I’m going against what you’re saying and you’re the expert, but I think this way.” as in, “you’re the expert on herons and I don’t want to tell you how to take care of your boyfriend, but also, I think Reyson and Leanne know what they’re doing and I respect them.”

my only question is why did the localizers have Tibarn say “just kidding”? we could have had the best of both worlds. when I remake RD it’s gonna take the best from the English and the best from the Japanese and it’ll be god tier dialogue, mark my words
