some quick queer fossil fighters headcanons
-Several vivosaurs have been treated throughout the ages as queer icons. Generally, dromaeosauridae, particularly Dilopho, Breme, and Nychus, are seen as representative of all forms of queerness. Moreover, Aopteryx, Proto, and Guam, who are gifted with the ability to transform into yet more glorious iterations of themselves, are commonly used in trans iconography. Shanshan tends to be used as a transmasc icon solely, while Guam is usually used for transfem iconography. Aopteryx is used dually as a generalised trans icon and as a representation of nonbinary Fossil Fighters. Also; Sinopteryx is often incorporated into lesbian iconography.
-Most assume that Holt, for his love of V-raptor, would be gay. They're not wrong that he's queer, but his specific brand of queerness is asexuality.
-Dinaurians have more complex chromosomes than humans, so have their own approach to classifying both sex and gender. While there exist both female and male Dinaurian phenotypes, these phenotypes don't always match with their BC/CC chromosome distributions—environmental influence plays a far greater part in Dinaurian than human puberty, so BC males and females both exist, as do CC males and females, and BC and CC intersex Dinaurians. While Dinaurian standards of masculinity and femininity exist, they present more guidelines than cultural imperatives—as such, many Dinaurians fit into neither box socially or biologically, and this is broadly considered normative. Human ideas of straightness, gayness, and bisexuality thus don't always translate well into Dinaurian culture, as the idea of inherently being attracted to especially stringent expressions of certain chromosomal phenotypes just doesn't compute when those phenotypes aren't straightforward. Dinaurians might mention preferring masculinity or femininity somewhat if asked about their sexualities, but are more likely to emphasise personality, intellect, or specific nondimorphic physical characteristics. That is, most dinaurians are sapiosexual and pansexual to some degree, but pansexuality doesn't tend to entirely translate as a cultural construct.
-Near the Hare Club, Cranial Isle has a small hangout room labelled 'the Aopteryx Club'. It's a de facto space for trans Fossil Fighters to meet up and trade anecdotes, and Terry insists on setting aside a portion of the Fighter Station housekeeping budget to make sure the Aopteryx Club is furnished as well as possible.
-Terry is gay, and Cole is a bisexual who long assumed himself to be the sole queer man worth his own attention. The two attended highschool together, and slowly, ever so slowly, have been seen becoming more and more affectionate with each other in public.
-Lola is nonbinary and aroace, but doesn't tend to mention her gender identity unless asked. She's seldom felt quite comfortable with they/them pronouns, but considers herself human before she considers herself in any way female. Though she's ace, she absolutely adores gossiping about others' love lives, and has made every effort possible to nudge Cole closer to Terry.
-Lester is nonbinary and transmasc (he/they pronouns). He and Lola spend a great deal of time making music after hours at the Aopteryx club.
-Pauleen and Dina are lesbian. Oh so very lesbian. Dina is usually entirely oblivious to any male expressions of attraction towards her. Pauleen is not oblivious when men adore her, but tends to be upfront about seldom returning feelings.
-Rupert and Dino are gay. Oh so very gay. From a marketing perspective, Rupert's father didn't disapprove of his son's sexuality—rather, he despised his son's choice in partner, and feared that Rupert and Dino's public affection for each other would drive away potential clients for FossilDig. Rupert managed to allay most of his father's worries by pointing out that FossilDig could likely buy into rainbow capitalism more now, but look less conspicuous doing so. Nevertheless, Rupert's father remained too stuffy to follow through on such a business venture, and pride month sales remain anodyne. Joe Wildwest, meanwhile, not only dotes on his son, but has been absolutely vocal about LGBT rights since he noticed that Dino was gay. 'Noticed', rather than 'was told', since Dino never really came out—he just happened to have a first crush on a male, rather than female, classmate, and the family rolled with it from there.
-In the Patrol Team, Todd is the token straight on thin ice.
-P. A. Leon is gloriously and gorgeously aroace. Though she dated as a young woman, she came to realise she better enjoyed time spent alone with her Kraftwerk and Gary Numan records than time spent together with partners. Her team comprises solely dromaesauridae, and as such, long before she used the term 'asexual' on radio, many celebrated her apparent queerness.
-Diggins and Beth are both trans, and Diggins was the first person to popularise Aopteryx as a symbol of transness.
-Joe describes himself as straight, but also swoons over 70s & 80s rockstars. He's as straight as a 70s rockstar can be—that is, functionally bicurious at minimum. An, uh, 'extremely devoted ally'.
-Though Stryker gives extremely little away to the press, he's always been openly gay. It's not something he's ever wished to conceal; as such, he's the first openly queer head of the Wardens.
-Dahlia and Penny are probably the most prominent resident sapphic couple at INTERFOL.

So Much for My Happy Ending by WishUponADragon
Vivosaur Island is a small community, other than the tourists that flock to the digsites day in and day out. Everyone knows everything about everyone else, or at least Keigo thought he did.

A quick little Fossil Fighters scenario I dreamed up last night
A few hours before Hunter went to battle with Guhnash’s brains, Diggins called an old friend over on Caliosteo.
That old friend: *answers the phone* Well, howdy, Diggins! Did I tell you-
Diggins: Not now, Joe - we have a huge problem!
So a mere five minutes later, Joe simply dropped everything and started riding over on Ptera to Vivosaur Island. That fast. He cared for Diggins enough that he came, even though this was before Diggins could even explain the whole ‘aliens and planet-eating monsters’ shebang. By the time he’d arrived, Hunter had already recklessly teleported into Guhnash’s gullet (Diggins had intended to summon Joe for the fight), but that didn’t stop him being of use. With his nothing but his charisma and big, loud mouth, he managed to convince the entirety of the Guild Area to get onto the starship in the massive timespan of three hours.
When he first arrived, his initial reaction was: ‘Diggins? Whaddya doin’ dressed like a caveman?’ The mammoth-hide toga soon lost his focus in favour of a far more interesting matter:
Joe: *sidles up a chair and tips his hat courteously* are you two (*looking at Duna and Dynal*) that pair of aliens?
In spite of the fairly abrupt introduction, he was extremely polite to them, and they ended up on fairly good terms. Dynal liked him far more than Duna did - if you’ll permit some head-hopping, she was likely far busier processing the events leading up to the final battle than Dynal was. Joe is the only human who bothers to address Dynal by the title of ‘king’, as most other humans who know of his existence simply avoid him or keep to themselves.
Later, when Joe was headed back to Caliosteo to explore Zongazonga’s tomb, Diggins (still in the mammoth-hide toga) pleaded like a man with his life on the line that Joe reconsider. He’d read more into the lore than Joe had, though neither of them anticipated Joe getting possessed. Joe laughed it off, and sorely regretted it later.
Following the possession, Dynal (unaware) found himself in need of accommodation briefly on Caliosteo. Zongazonga, knowing that the relationship would be too eclectic to fake, decided he’d blow his cover if he accepted him, so he refused. Dynal lost most of his respect for Joe, though interestingly, Zonga did get the ‘addressing him as “king” thing’ right.
When word got back to Joe (after he’d been returned to his body), he was mortified. He promptly shot off an email (which could not have been longer than three lines) and dropped everything (again) to get on Ptera and fly to Vivosaur Island. Dynal was surprised by the visit, but (with great restraint) allowed him in. Joe apologised and explained everything at once, before saying that no matter what the price, he’d repay him. Dynal was so shocked that he couldn’t help that forgive him.

Frontier Branch Leaders, pt. 3: Drake and Liu Ren
Pt. 1: Background Information
Pt. 2: Sean
Drake
-I stated in an earlier post on this blog that he's 27. Please forget that. He's probably on the cusp of 39 (circa 2015, at the beginning of Frontier).
-Originally from Sweden; moved to Copenhagen a few years before Frontier started.
-Absolutely hates the sensation that occurs when he enters his ancestral battle trance. To him, it's as being possessed, not to mention being utterly exhausting. Starting in his teens, he'd often have periods of abruptly losing control of this trance, and lashing out, sometimes violently, against tormentors and, in worse cases, family. Violet's interest in mysticism allowed her to help him work out what was going on, and slowly learn to detect when a wave of possession was imminent.
-Loves his Ankylo BO because he needn't fear injuring it during one of his trances. He feels most comfortable around padded and armoured vivosaurs.
-For a long time, he tried, desperately, to minimise the length of time he had to spend around children and, by extension, the youngest of the Wardens. He's terrified of hurting people accidentally. Moreover, he finds most people too loud, too much, too extraverted to deal with.
-Has a surprisingly excellent relationship with Sean, who quickly worked out that Drake was intensely sensitive to Sean's typical loudness. As such, Sean usually drops his volume around Drake, and where possible, emails or texts him, instead of talking, on bad days. When Drake's overloaded trying to handle the caseload that comes with managing not only Europe, but also cases in Africa, Sean will often offer to take over some of Drake's more menial duties. Drake, in return, bakes for him, and brings him odd fossil trinkets and weird rocks.
-Despite how much he hates loud people, he loves Scandinavian death metal.
-Known to abuse the World Gate to conveniently escape people. ('Sorry I can't come to your birthday, friend. I'm in Chile right now.')
-Suffered significantly with OCD from childhood, being at his worst in his teens and mid-twenties. He waited for almost 15 years before finally seeking help. While he still has intrusive thoughts and compulsions, they're far better managed now. His social anxiety is also significantly better than it once was.
-Was diagnosed with autism at age 4. Will scream if someone enters his office unexpectedly.
-Has some of the same powers as Violet—however, while she can communicate with spirits and occasionally see the future, he can merely hear spirits and detect psychic energy, but can't actually manipulate them well. Generally, if he can hear his ancestors chattering, he knows his bloodthirsty side is about to take over.
-Blows off frustration by punching pillows. If he punches walls instead, he will leave cracks in the plaster.
-Speaks Swedish and Danish fluently, as well as German and English proficiently. Has a very, very strong accent.
-Visits Switzerland all too often for the sole sake of buying too much Toblerone. Violet can and will raid his supply if there's any left by the time he returns to Fossil Park Europe, so he has about three days to consume everything he buys before she can find him.
-INTP 6w5 sp/sx.
Liu Ren
-Originally from Shanxi. Swears he's forty-eight years old, but Drake and Violet both detect a particular spiritual energy coming from him that's far too immense for him to be a normal forty-something. Writes exclusively in traditional Chinese, never mind that simplified characters have been in use since well before the 80s. Moreover, he's clearly far smarter than he lets on. Violet and Drake are both absolutely certain he's at least a century old, and aren't entirely sure he's human.
-Writes his name as 劉仁, but Violet swears that certain Qing-dynasty documents by 劉陽磊, a mystic and self-proclaimed witch, give off the same energy as Liu Ren's own writings.
-Fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, six other Chinese dialects, English, and Portuguese.
-Tends to playfully rib Tria for her extremely strong Sichuan accent.
-Consumes obscene amounts of Sprite and Coca-Cola. Nobody knows how his teeth are still intact.
-When other Wardens get injured, he'll tell them to cheer up, and inevitably have a story of a similar injury. As such, he's been poisoned, burned, bruised, and broken over and over. Nobody knows how he's had time to suffer all these abuses, let alone recover.
-Drake and Sean both overtly dislike him. In part, it's that Fossil Park Asia has a longstanding rivalry with Fossil Park America, and that rivalry means that Sean tends to interpret Liu Ren's gestures as patronising, instead of circumspect, and Liu Ren thinks Sean to be green and overconfident. Drake's suspicions about Liu Ren's history remind him of his own supernatural tendencies, leading him to deeply distrust Liu Ren. Stryker is the only one at HQ who isn't concealing some kind of misgivings about Liu Ren, and even then, Stryker is notoriously unwilling to take orders. While Liu Ren has been there far longer than Stryker, and Stryker owes some success to Liu Ren, they exasperate each other.
-He's been in the job for over 25 years, and looked the same then as now. Though few people like him well, he's still impossible to boot from the position, as he's never actually done anything overtly wrong. Fossil Park America claim that he's overpowered and obsolete; Fossil Park Asia claim that he's done more for INTERFOL than Fossil Park America has in the last three decades combined. He's possibly the most experienced person in INTERFOL, and doesn't seem to be running out of momentum; as such, he's invaluable, even if he's incomparably ill-liked.
-Though he's not overtly frayed at the edges in the same way that many, many Wardens are, he can and will go very, very quiet if someone mentions anything to do with Cosmonium, and when he touches the stuff, he claims that it burns. Drake is starting to wonder if Liu Ren's apparent agelessness might have something to do with Cosmonium, and if there may be some awful incident at the heart of what drove him into contact with it.
-Occasionally takes partners for a night, but doesn't appear to be seeking companionship. Has a portrait of a wife in his office, but it's old-fashioned, in black-and-white, and nobody has ever met the woman herself. Mei Lian once worked up the courage to ask her name. Zha Youjing. When Mei Lian looked at the photo of Youjing and called her gorgeous, Liu Ren looked as if he'd seen a ghost.
-ENTP 3w4 sp/so.

Interviewing Famous Fossil Fighters
Saurhead: Intense, but not forthcoming in the least about his personal life. Extroverted, but antisocially. Gladly states his opinions on other fighters, but maintains his legend by keeping mum on any details that could humanise him. Was known to have drunk heavily back in the day; has since gone straight edge, substituting exercise for alcohol. That's the extent of what's known. Used to be a little more open in his 20s, but has gotten more and more reluctant to give away pieces of himself since.
Joe: Overshares, unless his family is involved, in which case he tries to keep things quiet. The media knew for a long time that he had a son, but didn't even know said son's name until Dino was 10—Joe endeavoured to give him a 'normal' upbringing, and failed spectacularly at the 'normal' bit by giving him inflated, miraculous versions of the things most kids get ('wanna go for a holiday in Switzerland next week? Easy done!'). However, he tried as best as he could to keep the media out of Dino's life, and managed relatively successfully until Dino started to take fossil fighting seriously.
Otherwise, Joe will discuss almost any part of his life in an interview. As polite as he is, he lacks a filter, and can bounce haphazardly between topics. He's fun to watch, in that he's a very good actor, so can easily assume whatever guise will be most enjoyable for a viewer. Moreover, his acting skills mean that he can usually manipulate interviewers into asking more or less about certain topics, and he can generally control how he comes across emotionally. Since being possessed, he's grown somewhat more honest with interviewers, and has started being comfortable to show discomfort on camera. Has a supercharged, super-magnetic stage presence.
Stryker: Extremely circumspect. Never boring to interview, in that he's an excellent storyteller, so can often explain what he needs to with perfect narrative timing. However, he plays his cards extremely close to his chest. Over the years, he's become a little more open, perhaps as a product of growing more comfortable with himself, but he makes an effort to be as succinct and unemotional as possible. That said, he's very funny, and has a laconic gift for summarising events that makes him a brilliant guest on talk shows. Was very visibly nervous on camera until he was about 25, at which point he both matured and learnt that beta-blockers are an excellent treatment for stage fright.

Most of Dina's playlists are a mix of 2nd-generation kpop and bubblegum girl groups; however, every five tracks or so, an oddly sombre number emerges. 'Hyper-ballad', Björk. 'Ice Age', How to Destroy Angels. 'Love is a Losing Game', Amy Winehouse.
A few months after meeting Joe Wildwest for the first time, Dina and Todd ended up packed together on a road trip through the Blue Mountains. Dina wrested control of the aux cord. For half an hour, Todd complained irreverently. Then Mitski's 'I Want You' broke through the car. In those timid three minutes, he wondered what on earth Dina had been through to draw her to such. Often, angst doesn't necessarily have an identifiable cause, especially at that age, when emotions cast broad strokes like bloodstains over rationality. It's easy enough to feel estranged from oneself in those years, and to feel rage for the peace that was once taken for granted. But he wasn't wrong. Dina never explicitly told him she'd been bullied badly some years prior, but it wasn't overly difficult to piece together. The way she smiled and looked away whenever the last couple of years came up in conversation. The way she laughed, forcing the noise deeper into her torso than it would comfortably descend, at meek-seeming students in the halls. The way she eyed the pavers when Auto Counter came up in conversation. Her inexplicable dislike of thyreophora such as Ankylo, Goyle, and Perso, no matter how he tried to exhort their strength. How she chewed the air when she read about the prodigy on Vivosaur Island. She always brushed these things off as her being somehow weak, and imploded, unveiling an impermeable shell of silence, whenever her past came up. Todd tried to praise her throughout the Caliosteo Cup. When she bristled, and said she didn't really feel her victories were anything but flukes, he felt a whorl of envy. If luck could carry her this far, why, why, why did he keep losing? Both carried a measure of shame. For her, as far as he could tell, it seemed arbitrary. For him, it burned, brighter and brighter for every effort she made to reach out to him. They didn't interact much throughout those final rounds of the Cup. And when Zongazonga gave him impetus to let his months' worth of amorphous fury take shape, it billowed through him.
Todd only saw Dina interact with Hunter Buckland once; he'd come as a spectator to the Battle Royale. He was ganglier than Todd had expected, too tall to be comfortable in his movements, which halted and started like split-ended wood. Dina noticed him in the Ribular fighter station, and lowered her gaze. He said 'hello', and after an eternity, she responded. 'Hello.' They attempted phatic talk, and the conversation withered. Eventually, he asked if they could talk sometime. She smiled, laughed through her teeth. 'I'll think about it.' As Dina watched Hunter walk away, Todd swore he heard her humming 'Ice Age'.
