What fans say:
WALL-E:
This is definitely my favourite Pixar movie, it's absolutely gorgeous. The first half of the movie has literally no dialogue but still manages to be so cute and expressive, WALL-E is a wonderful protagonist and his romance with EVE is adorable, the environmental message is very strong. S tier movie, I adore it.
Robots <3 it's a beautiful story about humanity and joy and robots finding love and how having consumerism be the main controlling factor in life is awful shallow and miserable and you have to have passion and enjoy the small things in life.
Your Name:
Beautiful animation and scenery, great characters, brilliant plot, new and imaginative love story, and lovely music.
Best musical score in the universe, and a beautiful story.
The animation is gorgeous and the storyline is so unlike anything else! the big plot twist of the movie is done perfectly and it's just sooo good. Also the music is just amazing.

I saw Makoto Shinkai’s new film “Suzume” in IMAX during its opening weekend 🚪
It was not as great as “Your name.” However, I liked it more than Shinkai’s previous film, “Weathering with You.”
“Suzume” looks beautiful as expected with a couple stand-out moments and character animations.
Yet it feels lacking in fresh, impressive visual surprises. Shinkai (and his team) mostly stick close to what he knows. What’s here are the sort of sights you pretty much have seen before if you’ve watched his previous works. It’s pretty, but familiar.
Storywise, it’s much more about the titular character’s journey than the romance (which feels underdeveloped). It’s a pretty fun adventure with road trip-like moments.
I found the themes of loss and past tragedy to be moving. Having certain parts more fleshed out / more depth would’ve made more of an emotional impact though.
The music is notably pretty great, with a lot less use of lyrical songs and instead more instrumental tracks. Solid performances from the vocal cast, too.
Likewise, the audio team did a good job with the sound design bringing Suzume’s world to life.
I’ve been anticipating “Suzume” to be somewhat divisive. So far, reception seems pretty split among my friends and acquaintances who’ve seen it.
Suzume was an enjoyable and emotional experience, despite certain elements being undercooked.
🪑 3.5 out of 5.

(Photo: [Left] In Japan, for almost every movie, you can buy a “pamphlet,” a book that has information, interviews, concept art, and/or scenes from the movie. [Right] Some movies come with a freebie. In Suzume’s case, it’s a booklet with notes, interviews, and concept art. [Center] Japanese theaters have a gift shop selling movie merch. It’s cool but can be dangerous. I bought a keychain.)

Changing Desktop Background From Your Name
「君の名は」から変わるパソコン/デスクトップ壁紙
In light of the new film by Makoto Shinkai, Suzume (スズメの戸締まり) being released, I thought that I would make something based on one of his previous films. Although personally I did not enjoy it as much as many other fans, Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 film, Your Name (君の名は) was released to great acclaim both in Japan and internationally. Despite my lackluster enjoyment of the film, I have to commend the studio, CoMix Wave Films, for their incredible animation. To me, the animation and art alone make it a movie worth watching. There is one moment which I personally find really cool in the film, which is the time lapse which plays as Zenzenzense (前前前世) by RADWIMPS plays in the background. This time lapse depicts the setting and rising of the sun in the countryside and Tokyo, which I think looks really pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incidentally, nother thing I have an interest in is desktop customization. I was initially searching for a background that would change in line with the rising and setting of the sun. Of course, this is somewhat of a tall order, as I also did not want to download too many wallpaper engines or other software that I would have a harder time learning. I settled on a wallpaper engine that seemed easy to use called Rainmeter, an open source desktop customizer.
Due to the fact that I could not find any desktop backgrounds I wanted to use and paired with my enjoyment of that time lapse scene, I decided to make a changing background using that scene from the movie. The project admittedly took a lot of time, as I had to screenshot all the frames of the time lapse, rename all the nearly 400 images, then I had to code a massive line of if elses (please don’t hate me comp sci kids) that would change the background based on the time. In any case, the final product looks pretty good, at least in my opinion. The code is set in stone so the sunset and sunrise in the background pictures won’t perfectly line up wherever you happen to be in the world but it follows roughly the pattern of the sunrise and sunset. I based the sunrise and sunset times on Gifu time around September 2013 as that seems to be around when the film is set, based on the dates shown on their phones. Although it's weird because one of them is in Tokyo 2016 while the other one is back in time by three years.
In any case, to use this wallpaper, you will need to download Rainmeter, which you can do so through this link below. It’s only available on Windows, so very sorry my Mac friends. You will also have to download this file below with the images and the code. The file is 1 GB in size which is the largest file that I’ve had so far so sorry about that but there are like 360 images and each is 1920 by 1080 so yeah. Once you have the file downloaded, you’ll want to unzip it, then move it to the Skins folder in your Rainmeter folder. Once you have that done, you can open the application and then click on the .ini file, and then load the skin. The images change every 4 minutes so you can check if it works by a) checking if the file loads properly, and then b) if the image changes. Once you have that setup it should be good to go!

I hope you enjoy the Your Name changing background!

So one theme I keep seeing in the psych of romantic love is that there is always an element of chasing the Beloved that is repeated.
Tumblr media
Exhibit A: Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name that comes to mind with Taki wishing he could have told Mitsuha that “wherever you may end up in this world, I will be searching for you.”
But what is it compels us to search for an absent Beloved that we should want to chase?
For this, Jungian Analyst, John Haule's quote stayed with me: “the goal of love appears to be nothing less than a loss of ego.”
And I feel like Taki and Mitsuha capture the dilemma of loss of ego for the sake of the Beloved really well.
Your Name has it’s flaws--starting with the fact that if you’ve seen it as many times as I have, you start to see the plot holes are like 100 miles deep.
But Your Name, just like love, is not logical, it belongs to the irrational world of the heart where even comets can bring soulmates together in complete ego death.
When both Taki and Mitsuha fail to give an offering when they exit the underworld, their memory of each other is taken from them.
Now, this is where it gets mental gymnastics because memory is nothing but the story the ego tells itself to define its sense of self in the space time continuum.
But Mitsuha and Taki’s bond is of the soul, not the mind. So even if they lost the mind’s memory of each other, their hearts still yearned for each other.
It was this yearning that compelled them to chase in search of the Other.
Which is how we have Taki and Mitsuha both express that they don’t know why they cry.
Tumblr media
Their heart yearns, but their mind does not have memory of why.
And that’s exactly what I love about Your Name--Taki and Mitsuha recognized each other’s soul and each other’s yearning.
So when they both cry in the end, their tears are tears of joy at having reunited after so much unnameable yearning.
Tumblr media
It’s their hearts recognizing each other after all this time and even after forgetting each other’s name.
Also I have to admit that I love that Shinkai finally gave us an otp that might actually work out considering how his other movies end in unresolved and unrequited love.
Seriously, Taki and Mitsuha are my poster children for “soulmate bonds are real”.

4/1 Your Name
I have endlessly heard this movie raved about so I was excited to actually watch it.
Overall I was really touched by how wholesome a love story this is. I feel that really often looks especially but circumstances also play a huge role in how people are brought together (i.e you sit next to that one kid whose been in your math class for 4 years straight at lunch) but for two completely separate and different people to find their fates intertwined I felt was more meaningful.
I also really liked the way in which they got to know each other through the interactions that had with the people close to the "true" them and felt it to be really fitting that they were both what the other needed. Taki was overly masculine and struggling to make a connection with the girl he liked and though I'm not 100% sure, I get the impression that Mitsuha was much more quiet and reserved. The people around each of them repeatedly mention that the "new" them is great or awesome or somehow better than before.
The analogy of a braided cord representing time and the musubi was also repeatedly emphasized. About half way in is when we start getting into the multiple timelines merging but the braided cord repeatedly reappears. As for the multiple timelines, I read online that the inspiration for the comet wiping out itomori came a lot from interstellar as well as the the real life 9.0 earthquake that hit Japan back in 2011.
When I was in Japan the musubi omamori was my favorite and a Japanese person I met actually got me one. He explained that it represents good relationships with people over time, not just in a romantic way. This kind of interconnectedness definitely plays a role both implicitly and explicitly for Taki and Mitsuha.
