Kenji Muto's Twitter Posts: Part 1

Before and while Tristamp was airing, Kenji Muto made some amazing Twitter posts giving us lore and production tidbits along the way. And while I don't speak Japanese (so I'm going to have to use Google Translate for this, so take everything you read here with a grain of salt because it may be skewed by mistranslation), there was some fantastic art and really cool concepts shared, and I want to archive anything Trigun-related. If I miss anything, let me know!) It starts a little slow with stuff we already know, but there are some interesting tidbits! If anyone who knows Japanese wants to correct anything, please feel free! For some reason, most of the official concept art released is from the boyhood version. In the original manga, Nai plays an organ-like or piano-like instrument. How do you feel when you play, and who do you have in mind when you play? Come to think of it, when will that concept art be released? When will it be lifted? #TRIGUN

The European Ivy (hedera helix, common ivy, or English ivy) is a evergreen tree, generally regarded as a 'entwining plant', and can be seen crawling up trees and brick walls, as well as on the ground in woodland. Ivy stems attach to the host tree by entangling with each other, with adhesive buds are attached to their roots. They creep up to a maximum height of nearly 30 m (about 9 ft). It grows ivy, like vines, but neither ivy nor vines are parasitic plants and nutrients are absorbed not from the host, but from roots that reach the ground and extend into the ground. The host merely provides 'support'.

People have long believed that Ivy has latent magical powers, which are closely related to the grapevine. Ivy has the power to bind, but it also gives birth to a deep darkness, showing us that life is with death. It represents the wandering soul in search of enlightenment and cautions us not to let the trap of desire save our feet.

Interview with Dai Sato, Series Composer A Guide to the Shining Night

シリーズ構成・佐藤大氏○インタビュー輝く夜への案内状

What did you keep in mind when composing the series?

When I first met director Yukiyo Teramoto, she told me that she wanted to depict Joker and his friends' lives and relationships, not to mention their charm as phantom thieves. With this in mind, we started work on the series structure, but as the TV animation had to be summarised in 26 episodes for seasons 1 and 2, it was not possible to visualise all the episodes from the original story. So, after consulting with Director Teramoto, we introduced Queen and Silver Heart, who appear in the middle of the original story, from the beginning of Season 1. I wanted to depict a story centered on Joker and Hachi, but also a story involving Joker, Spade and Queen all together. So I moved the episodes of the original story forward and made them up as I went along. However, both Teramoto and I love the original story, so we adapted the way and order of the characters' appearances to the original story. We also had an order for Joker and his team to confront a major enemy throughout the 26 episodes of the anime, so we placed Professor C and Shadow Joker as the most suitable characters for the enemy. With Shadow by Professor C's side, I think you get a better sense of the relationship between Joker and Silver Heart as a master-disciple duo.

The original story is a treasure trove of fascinating scenarios, how did you decide which to make into an anime? I had a list of all the stories up to volume 16, and me, director Teramoto and the producers chose the episodes we absolutely wanted to do. The episodes we decided on first were episode 1, "The Miracle Maker Appears", and episode 5, "Journey into the Shining Night". The episodes to be broadcast in the future include episode 19 "Crash! The Idol Stage" and episode 22, "The Burning Inspector and the Wicked Foxes". I wanted to tell these stories in Season 1 after all the main characters had come together and the relationships between the phantom thieves had been established, so I decided to do them in Season 2.

Finally, a message to all the fans! The brilliant tricks of the phantom thieves. The days when the phantom thief, his assistant and his master spend together like a family, and the stories and settings of the original work are important to the production of all the staff. The last few episodes are more epic than ever, so I hope you enjoy them.

シリーズ構成をされる際に、意識されたことは? 初めて寺本幸代監督にお会いした時に、怪盗としての魅力はもちろん、ジョーカーたちの生活の様子や関係性を描きたいという話を伺いました。その思いを念頭にシリーズ構成の作業に入ったのですが、 TVアニメとしてシーズン1・2の26話にまとめなくてはいけないので、原作のエピソードをすべて映像化することはできないんですよね。そこで寺本監督とも相談して、原作では中盤から登場するクイーンやシルバーハートを、シーズン1の初期から登場させました。ジョーカーとハチが中心のお話はもちろん、ジョーカー、スペード、クイーンの3人がそろって巻き起こるお話も描きたかったんです。なので、原作のエピソードを前倒しして、構成していきました。ただ、僕も寺本監督も原作が大好きなので、各キャラクターの登場の仕方と順番は、原作にあわせました。かつ、アニメ26 話を通して、ジョーカーたちが大きな敵に立ち向かっていく形にしたいとのオーダーもあったので、敵として一番ふさわしいキャラクターとして、プロフェッサ・Cとシャドウ・ジョーカーを配置しました。プロフェッサー・Cの傍にシャドウもいることで、ジョーカー&シルバーハートの師弟コンビとの対の関係性を、より感じとっていただけているかなと思います。

原作は魅力的なお話の宝庫ですが、どのようにアアニメ化するエピソードを決めていったのでしょうか? 16巻までのお話をすべてリストにしてもらって、僕と寺本監督とプロデューサー陣で、絶対にやりたいエピソードを選んでいきました。真っ先に決まったのは、第1話の「奇跡の怪盗あらわる」や、第5話の「輝く夜への旅立ち」です。今後放送されるエピソードですと、第19話「激突!! アイドルステージ」や第 22話の「炎の警部と邪悪な狐」ですね。これらのお話はシーズン1でメインキャラクターが全員そろって、怪盗同士の関係性が構築されてから描きたかったので、シーズン2でやる運びとなりました。

最後に、ファンの皆様へメッセージを! 怪盗たちの華麗なトリック。そして、怪盗と助手、師匠が家族のように過ごす日々と、原作の物語や設定を大切にスタッフ一同、制作しています。最後の何話かは、今まで以上に壮大なストーリーになっているので、ぜひ楽しんでいただけたら嬉しいです。

Are you interested in reading books in Japanese with other language learners? Do you enjoy light novels? 別次元の図書館 (Library from Another Dimension) is a Discord based book club made by and for Japanese learners. This book club was made to encourage learners to read light novels, but the definition can be stretched for book selection.

Book club books are submitted and voted on bimonthly by book club members, so if you have a light novel series you’re interested in, don’t hesitate to give it a shout out!

There is no reading schedule! Feel free to read at your own pace, join in on older discussions, and read without fear of not being able to keep up. Typically, a large number of volumes will be officially part of the book club for each series chosen, but no one is under any obligation to read more than what you want, or are comfortable with.

All participation is text based. Don’t worry if you aren’t comfortable reading aloud, no one will expect you to!

アホウドリのうんこでできたリン鉱石で潤いかつては世界一の金持ち国と言われた太平洋の島国ナウル。将来の資源枯渇を見越して、鹿児島空港に就航するなど太平洋のハブ空港を目指したり、不動産投資や株式投資など様々な挑戦を行うもことごとく失敗して借金漬けに。航空会社が運行できなくなりネットも途絶して国自体が遭難、ナウル国籍を2.5万USDで販売、タックスヘイブンとなるべく資金洗浄銀行を作成、お金をもらって難民を受け入れるなどして現在も奮闘中。もはや伝説となったこのナウルへ行く方法を調べてビザ発給を試みたところ、それは困難を極めた。ナウルはいつか行きたい国として2010年代にたびたび情報を集めていた。当時からよく言われていたのは「真っ先にホテルを押さえろ」ということ。工事や難民関連の職員が泊まる需要があるからか、ナウルの限られたホテルの客室は常に不足しており、空室を探すのはビザの申請より難しいと言われていた。仮に航空券を先に買っても滞在先がなければビザが取れず無駄になってしまうので、とにかくホテルを最優先で押さえるというのはナウル渡航者の間では常識となっていたのだ。これが2010年代後半になると民泊仲介のAirbnbが出現してナウルでも利用できるようになり、選択肢が増えて安く滞在することもできるため以前よりはハードルが下がっていた。しかし、コロナ禍により状況は一変した。ネットの途絶が原因なのか詳細はわからないが、ホテルの予約にExpediaやagodaといった宿泊予約サイトOTAやAirbnbが一切使えなくなってしまったのだ。そうなると、電話やメールで宿に直接連絡するしかない。南太平洋への国際電話は1分1USDくらいして高すぎるので、メールアドレスを探してメールで連絡することになる。なお、WhatsAppを使っている人もほぼいないようで、電話番号でWhatsAppアカウントを検索してもヒットしなかった(バヌアツで重宝した)。ナウルには4軒くらいホテルがあるのでウェブを検索して調べたアドレスにメールを送ってみたものの、ドメインが失効しているのか「MAILER-DAEMON」で届かなかったり、音沙汰のないアドレスばかりだった。南太平洋で人気のないキリバスやナウルといった国は、「地球の歩き方」も売れないので出版されない。そこで重宝するのは「国際機関太平洋諸島センター」のウェブサイトで無料ダウンロードできる日本語ガイドpdfなのだが、ナウルが発行されたのは2017年。掲載されていたブダペストホテル、オドゥン・アイ・ウォ・ホテル、エワロッジはいずれも返信がなかった(エワロッジは連絡先が変わっていたことを後で知る)。

伝説の国ナウルに行く方法がコロナで完全に変わったのでまとめた。苦労の末に日本語で検索してはダメという真理にたどり着く : さざなみ壊変

　半年前に考えてたハロウィン・お盆ネタで使った設定を描いてみた。このネタは小説で描いてみようと思ったけど、視点が写りすぎるし説明口調だしで挫折したのです。挫折はしたけど一応話自体は完結してるから、酷い内容のプロットをそのままここに移植できたらなと思ってる。

　顔の痣や目の色が常に変化する者だったら面白いなって。

　自分で考えたネタだけど、そういえば宝石の国のユークレースとか夏目友人帳の誰だっけ、ヤモリの痣がある人とかが同じような設定だった気がする。チャンと色を塗ろうと思ったんだけど、「顔の痣が分からなくても服の色で分かるじゃん！」と漫画が成り立たなかったため、単色で塗りつぶしてごまかした。会うたびに謝必安・范無咎どっちでしょうか二分の一クイズをしてほしい。

　まだ続きがあるんです実は。

　たまにかわいい模様になってたりするといいな。

「今日はまた……かわいらしい模様になっているな」

「なんですか」

「痣が肉球のようになっている」

「！……」（溜息をして頭を抱える）

「……なんだ、そんなに嫌なのか？」

「私に関してはどうでもいいですが、私だけ肉球が付いた范無咎を見ることができないなんてとこの身を恨んでいるのですよ。あぁ、彼の姿を見られる貴方がうらやましい。」

（ココで切ってもいい）

「そうだな……あの御曹司にも頼めばいいじゃないか」

「彼は人物画を好みませんから……描いてくれませんよ」

「じゃあリッパーに頼むんだな」

「！その手があった！探してきます。どこにいるんですかね……いつも隠れているようで見当たらないんですよね」

～ひゅーあわーずれいたー～

「やあ必安。描いてもらえたか？」

「頼もうとしたらもう既に模様の形が変わってると言われました」

「残念だったね」

（この世界線の無常さんはお互い表裏一体の関係だと知ってる＋写真にも写らない）

　それから、しっかり色も塗ってみたんだけど、心なしか別のホセ推しの方の様な塗り方になってしまい……わざとじゃないんだ、ほんとうにたまたまそうなってしまったんだ。透明感がある色の塗り方は肌色を残すとかはっきりぱっきり塗らないって感じかなって思って塗ったらこうなったんだ。でもパクってるよって言われたら釈明できないと思うのでTwitterには載せずこっちにだけ。あとイソップも話が唐突過ぎるのと文字起こしが面倒なのでこっちだけに載せる。

主人公

ネットで話題になっている、復讐代行サイト。そこに依頼を書き込むと、復讐がなされるという噂が流れている。この復讐代行屋の正体は、シャドウに精神を喰われることもなく平然と影時間を闊歩する3人組だった。どうやら、影時間に復讐を行っているらしい。彼らがこんなことをしているのは、なぜなのだろうか？

グループのリーダーらしき男。この界隈では有名な、"不気味"で、"イッている"集団をまとめている。ほかのふたりと比べて、不気味さは際立っている。その言動から、何か狂信的な思想を持っているようにも感じられるが、詳細は不明だ。

ダンジョン探索や戦闘に関するシステムについて、これまで明らかにされていなかった部分が一挙に判明！さっそく、これの要素について紹介していこう。どうやら探索、戦闘の両面で計画性を持った行動が求められるようだ。事前に戦略をしっかり立てよう！

パーティーを編成して突入！

ダンジョン"タルタロス"の探索に入るまえに、パーティーメンバーを編成する。探索に挑めるのは、主人公を含め最大4人。出現する敵の属性や、仲間が持っているスキルなどをよく考えて編成しよう。

←攻撃、回復という区別だけではなく、所持ペルソナの属性も考慮したパーティー編成を心がけよう。

ダンジョンを手分けして探索

ダンジョン内で"散開"コマンドを選択すると、パーティーが個別行動に移る。主人公以外の仲間は、自動で探索を行ってくれるぞ。ダンジョンの全体像を把握したり、宝箱を捜す際に便利なコマンドだ。

破間中に戦闘になることもある。この場合、当然ながら主人公はひとりで敵と戦うことになるわけだ。もし苦戦を強いられそうなら、迷わず"救援要請"を指示しよう。歌会していた仲間が、続々と駆けつけてくれるぞ。ひとりで無理せず、緊急時には仲間の助けを求めるのも勇気だ。

→危ないと思ったら、迷わず放後要請を出すべき。あとは仲間がやってくるまで、なんとか持ちこたえろ！

ペルソナが成長していく！

主人公たちだけではなく、ベルソナも敵との戦いで経験値を積み、レベルアップしていく。レベルが上がるとパラメーターが上昇するほか、新たなスキルも覚えるのだ。覚えるスキルの上限まで育てるのもあり。ぺルソナ合体・育成ともに自由度高し!！

→こうして地道にペルソナを強化していけば、ペルソナ合体の際に、より強力なぺルソナが生み出せるぞ。
