could you elaborate on the censorship of superstition? as in: what qualifies; what is the line between that and belief?

It's sort of a broad umbrella of 封建迷信 ("feudal superstition") content so superstitious belief but especially in the realm of religious zealotry/fanaticism in a way that would disrupt public order, e.g, cults, etc. Falun gong would be a specific and well known example, as they're basically the scientology of China.

Generally what qualifies is anything that promotes can obviously lead to mental/physical harm or social disorder. To make it more clear, let's just go to actual content policies. I think reading those will make it a little clearer, although the rules remain broad and are subject to the platform's human censors' judgement (this is why douyins will often have explicit disclaimers in the corners of videos).

Let's examine the policies of Bilibili (youtube like platform) and Douyin (tiktok) surrounding their rules on superstition:

Bilibili

Regarding feudalistic, superstitious content

bilibili prohibits the publication and promotion of feudalistic, superstitious content. The following behaviors are prohibited content, including but not limited to: 1. Using the promotion of superstitious activities to obtain benefits (profit); 2. Receiving disciples, opening classes 3. Promoting alternative medicine 4. Spreading conspiracy theories and rumors regarding incidents of public safety

bilibili will take factors under consideration regarding the following:

1. Whether the video was made with the intent of opposing feudal superstition 2. Whether there is enough background information to clearly inform the viewer that the superstition content is not true; 3. Whether the related content is being used for education, scientific research, or artistic purposes. Examples of prohibited content: Promoting tiaodashen ("jumping of gods"; type of folk religion/shamanistic ceremony), potaisui ("breaking Tai Sui"; folk religious practice/belief), wuguism (type of ancient Chinese witchcraft revolving around poison), [voodooism/voodoo doll pricking], Daoist or Buddhist rites, etc, involving feudalistic, superstitious behaviors

Taking potaisui for example, this is a belief that would be considered fanatical superstition because the practice can involve the belief in a disastrous amount of bad luck occurring at certain times, resulting in mental distress and potentially leading to the harm of oneself or others. Therefore promotion of it is censored content, although information about it can still be found online.

Full douyin content policy (ZH)

The site policy mentions superstition in two places:

平台禁止发布、传播描绘、展示或宣扬未成年人实施的以下不良行为的内容：

29. Harming or influencing the mental and physical health of minors

In an effort to protect the legal rights of minors, and prevent triggering or provoking minors to copy [these behaviors], excluding legitimate religious preaching, the Platform prohibits the publication, dissemination/portrayal, or proclamation of content with unhealthy behaviors that could harm or influence the physical and mental health of minors. All these referred to unhealthy behaviors or content are those which are not conducive to the health or maturity of minors, including to the point of constituting illegal activities.

The Platform prohibits the publication, dissemination/portrayal, or proclamation of content with unhealthy behaviors:

- Minors smoking, drinking alcohol, cutting class, playing truant, [having an] online addiction, participating in gambling, [participating in] feudal superstition and evil cult (etc) activities;

The other mention of superstition is under a section forbidding the intentional spread of disinformation, including information that "破坏国家宗教政策，宣扬邪教和封建迷信的；"Undermines the Nation's religious policy, and promotes cults and feudal superstitions;"

China's religious policy per the constitution is freedom of religion so long as that religion does not infringe the legal rights of other citizens or force others to believe in religion (i.e, no proselytizing in public). Religions must adhere to a principle of independence and self-administration and the religious affairs cannot be dominated by foreign powers (related: the Vatican and China have had a pretty tense relationship for literally hundreds of years now). Regarding superstition in particular, "feudal superstition" is prohibited.

Anyway, hope this gives some insight. Film censorship of ghosts or demons as real (outside the realm of the fantasy/wuxia, or monster mutation b-movie stuff) follows a similar pattern of thought, generally speaking, but it's dumber and less rational given that films are stories and not real.
