The name 書上 is usually read Kakiage,* but could also be Shogami, Kakigami, or Kakiue.

書 was one of the first kanji I learned when I started my Japanese degree back in twenty-dickety-five, but I had no idea it could be used in names until now! It means to write, of course, and it can be read ka.ku, gaki, ga.ki, or sho.

Also interesting about this name is that the same characters in the same order can make a verb! 書き上げる kakiageru can mean to finish writing or complete, or to write out a list. So we get to add this to two of my favorite tags: #names that are also common words and #names that don't look like names.

*Yes, pronounced like the fritter on top of your soba, except that's written in hiragana or, rarely, 掻き揚げ, with 掻 meaning to scrape, as in "after we were done cooking everything else, we scraped all the scraps off the cutting board to make this for you!"
