The two show are using the same cast (zhang yunlong and Hu Yitian). The new show called “Checkmate” released for awhile but it’s seems like I prefer the old one more than this show. Lol. But I still happy to see them on the same screen!

Checkmate!
Our boys are back for round two of playing detectives in Republican Shanghai!!
Hu Yitian will play a lawyer-turned-detective named Si Tu Yan 司徒颜 and Leon Zhang will play a rich policeman named Luo Shao Chuan 骆少川.
I swear the producers are more than totally aware of all the ChuYao 楚垚 that exists, because why else give us LuoSi 骆司 (”screw”)???
(Guess who’s the Gong now?)
Or LuoSitu 骆司徒 (”students who screw” or “only screw”)
...
Oh, and if you’re curious, their official Weibo CP is allegedly 沉鱼骆颜 from the phrase 落雁沉鱼.

crown prince!Lu Yao x assassin!Qiao Chusheng AU
part ii
“Ge! You’re back!”
Qiao Chusheng sees a flutter of green robes before a bundle of speed and mass crashes promptly against him in what cannot be considered an embrace.
Bai Youning pulls back to frown at him. “You said you wouldn’t be back till summer. What happened?”
Qiao Chusheng smiles and ruffles her hair, receiving an irritated yelp and a slap on his hand as she reaches to pat down the mess of her hair. “I took way too long on this, don’t you dare mess it up,” she threatens with her silver hairpin waving maliciously at him.
“Alright, alright,” Qiao Chusheng concedes, lifting his hands up and edging further away from the pointed tip. “I’ll go and meet Bai laoye first.”
Bai Youning rolls her eyes and gestures to her father’s study. “Of course. What does he want from you this time?”
“Just the usual report on how the mission went, A-Ning.”
“When are you going to stop spying for him? One day you’re going to lose your life in another country and we wouldn’t even know!”
“Youning.” Her father warns as he steps through the threshold to stare disapprovingly at her.
“I’m leaving!” she declares and leaves without sparing him a look.
Master Bai meets Qiao Chusheng’s eyes and sighs. “How do you expect this old man to marry her off when she’s still so immature?”
Qiao Chusheng bows his head. “I have heard on my way back.” Then, with a softer tone, “How did she take it?”
“She turned the house inside out and threatened to leave. But even she knows not to defy His Majesty’s orders. She hasn’t spoken a single word to me since,” Master Bai turns with eyebrows drawn down with worry and settles back into his seat.
“Is she aware that it was not your wishes to marry her to the Crown Prince?”
“With that sort of temper, do you think she will listen to anything I say?”
Qiao Chusheng nods in agreement. “You’re right.”
“His Majesty is insistent on this arrangement.” He lifts his hand to gesture for Qiao Chusheng to shut the doors to his study. When Qiao Chusheng makes his way back, he sees the tell-tale glint in Master Bai’s eyes. “I want you to get rid of the Crown Prince. Make it look like suicide.”
Qiao Chusheng feels his blood run cold and his heart freezes over.
“He’s lazy and selfish. The country will do better without an Emperor like this. And he’s a cutsleeve. Youning will never find happiness with a man like him.” His tone holds finality in it.
Qiao Chusheng ensures no hesitation when he holds his fist over his heart and bows. “Yes, sir. I will make necessary preparations immediately.”
Master Bai laughs heartily and nods. “Good, good. I await your good news.”
Qiao Chusheng smiles and rises. “I will take my leave now,” he says, bowing in respect. When he steps out of the Bai Manor, he wills that the slight tremor in his hands had went unnoticed.
-
It is several weeks later when Qiao Chusheng—regrettably—finds Lu Yao. Much to Chusheng’s relief, Lu Yao had packed his belongings and left the palace the very night that Chusheng had received the order to kill him.
The people praised their Crown Prince for his intelligence, and Lu Yao did not disappoint. He is clever in covering his tracks, and it takes Chusheng almost an entire month before he catches sight of him on the streets, in a small town bordering the country.
He is dressed in plain commoner attire, standing on the street with a scroll in his hand. His hands wave animatedly around as he narrates a story of a woman who was abducted by a god of the river to become his bride. The people were enraptured by his tale but when he finishes, only two copper coins fell onto the ground before him.
“Hey! I told a great story!” Lu Yao exclaims, staring forlornly at the two measly coins.
The people shook their head and waved their hands. “It wasn’t the god that took the bride, but her housekeeper! What kind of story is that?”
“Yeah, it was bad!”
“Let’s go. Let’s go.”
The crowd dissipated as the villagers returned to their daily activities. Lu Yao sighs and bends down to take the two copper coins. A strand of hair had escaped his bun and fell into his eyes, and he groans, tucking it behind his ear.
Qiao Chusheng’s fingers itches for no apparent reason.
With that money, Lu Yao affords to buy a meat bun. As he settles down to bite into the bun, he catches sight of a skinny child rummaging through a heap of trash.
“Xiao didi, what are you doing?” he asks.
The child turns and lifts a fruit peel. “Looking for food!”
“Where is your family?”
“I don’t have a family,” the child replies.
Lu Yao feels his heart clench at the sight, and his hand wavers. Then, ignoring the pang in his stomach, he stands and presses the bun into the child’s hand. “Here, take this. The fruit peel will give you a stomach ache.”
The child stares down at the bun and hesitates, before breaking the bun into two. “Let’s share,” he says, handing Lu Yao the bigger piece. Lu Yao smiles and gently switches the halves and bites in on the smaller piece.
“You are growing so you need more food,” he says with his mouth full, his eyes smiling bright.
Qiao Chusheng feels his memories stir at the sight, and the image of the child blurs into that of a young Chusheng, several steps away from starving to death.
He recalls the same hand, dipping the bun clumsily into hot broth to soften it enough that Chusheng could swallow down his parched throat. The boy dressed in royal robes, feeding him piece by piece until he finishes both the pork rib soup and the bun. His fist tightens around the bottle of sleeping draught that he was supposed to drug Lu Yao with.
With a crack, the bottle shatters within his grip, and the shards stick deep into his palm. He leaves, hardly registering the pain.

What about this, you go back and tell his father, that Lu Yao is living quite happily here. If he misses him, he is welcome to come and visit him. But if he wants to bully him, then he is welcome to come and fight.

The Lu Family - Naming Tradition
So I’m not sure if the show actually names Lu Yao’s brothers at any point, and Lu Yao’s older sister is called Irene in by Anderson (her Eng name), but during episode 36, their Dad calls her 三水 (San Shui) - and this is very interesting:
1. Lu Yao 路垚 - Lu San Tu -because it’s 3 x 土 to form the word [yáo 垚] ⇥ [土] means earth
2. Lu Miao 路淼 - Lu San Shui - because it’s 3 x 水 to form the word [miǎo 淼] ⇥ [水] means water
And the Chinese are very fond of using earth, water, wood and fire as the four common elements? So I’m just wondering if Lu Yao’s brothers are called:
3. Lu Sen 路森 - Lu San Mu -because it’s 3 x 木 to form the word [sēn 森] ⇥ [木] means wood
4. Lu Yan 路焱 - Lu San Huo -because it’s 3 x 火 to form the word [yàn 焱] ⇥ [火] means fire
I mean, Dad has four kids, and might as well go for all four elements right?!
I might have missed something, but don’t think Lu Yao’s brothers are ever named. This style of words are called 三叠字 San Die Zi, which means a character made by stacking up the another character three times in two rows.
It’s really quite interesting! You can take a look at other words like these here:  https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%89%E5%8F%A0%E5%AD%97

Hi Sarah! Can you please explain why Lu Yao goes by San Tu? I think Qiao and Youning both call him that sometimes. Is it a courtesy name thing like with MDZS?
Lu Yao is written as 路垚 in Chinese. The character 垚 (Yao) is made up of three 土 (Tu). Three is 三 (San) in Chinese.
So San Tu is a play on Lu Yao’s name, like an affectionate nickname? :)

hi idk if this is a dumb question but i recently started watching my roomate is a detective and lu yao is also called lu san tu and then i see some people referring to him as yao yao or a - yao. and idk what these different names i guess means ?? im aware that yao yao and a-yao are like pet names? i just wanted to understand the context more could you help me?
Hi Anon!
It’s not a dumb question. These sorts of pet names like A-Yao, Yao Yao, or Santu/San Tu (depending on which way you prefer to write it) require a bit of context and knowledge of Chinese culture and language to understand. You shouldn’t feel bad about asking for help understanding them.
Full disclaimer, I am American Chinese, but a lot of this has been picked up over time and fandom and bugging people more fluent in Chinese than me. If there are any inaccuracies, I apologize and hope someone can help correct them.
So Lu Yao (路垚) is his name. When addressing someone you’re very close with, you might add the particle/sound A- (阿) to denote that familiarity. So in this case, calling him A-Yao is an affectionate pet name that would be said by close friends, family, maybe even a lover. If Lu Yao’s given name had two parts, like Chusheng or Youning do, you would add the A- to the second part which is the “personal” name. (The first part is usually the “generation” name that is decided by the family elders.) So for ex, Chusheng would be A-Sheng and Youning would be A-Ning. We see examples of this in The Untamed (when Jiang Yanli calls WWX “A-Xian” and Jiang Cheng as “A-Cheng”) and in HIStory3 Trapped (when Zhao Zi calls Meng Shaofei “A-Fei”).
If you repeat a part of a name, as in Yao Yao, this is also a pet name, but it’s also a bit more childish. Usually it’s used for children because it’s cute. It can also, if I remember correctly, be sort of diminutive. But basically, the reason why you would do this is to very cutely address someone you’re familiar with. If you do it to someone you’re not very close to, it would probably be very mocking!
The same can be said of childhood pet names. In one episode, we find out Lu Yao’s child pet name with his aunt was Mao Mao (毛毛) and that Bai Youning’s was Heinan (黑囡). These would really only be used by family or others when you’re very very young. Or by people a lot older than you because then they get to do whatever the fuck they want. (Filial piety am I rite?)
Then we get to Santu/San Tu. This is a play on Lu Yao’s name. Yao (垚) is written by writing the character for earth/dirt Tu (土) three times stacked on top of each other. Subs, I’ve noticed, translate this or “Lu San Tu” as “Silly Lu” because the literal translation is “Three Earth” or “Three Dirt” and doesn’t really make sense. Really, it’s just a nickname, similar to how people might call someone named Richard “Dick.” Or even having your name, but then you get a nickname based on some weird quirk of yours or something you said, EX McCoy being called Bones. I could understand though that they don’t want to make it sound like a proper name because then we get into birth names and courtesy names, and I’m not sure, but I feel like that practice was falling out by the 1920s.
I hope this helped Anon!

‘Review’ of My Roommate is a Detective
Firstly, not a professional reviewer or even a good critic of anything, this is just more of my thoughts and stuff so yeah.
Do note that I watch the drama with Chinese subtitles, I know iQiyi has 4 episodes on YouTube with English subtitles and 18 with premium subscription but not too sure where you can watch all the episodes with English subtitles.
Next, I did not have much idea of what the drama would be like as I discovered when I was looking for some dramas that Hu Yi Tian had acted in and this was one of the few that I could find. I did see some pages that said that it was based on a BL novel but not much else.
Also, after watching the drama, I did try to find the novel and did read one that seems like the original but I really cannot confirm since it was not BL as I thought it was based on what other pages have said. The novel I read is also in Chinese and I doubt there are translations of it in English as of now.
***After some googling, apparently it’s just bromance so the novel I read should be the original.***
It’s set in the mid 1920s from what I read off from other pages. I myself am not too sure as I’m not familiar with Chinese history at all. From the drama, there are British and opium which I felt would be more of the early 1900s but that is just based on my vague understanding of the opium wars. There is definitely a contrast I would say as there are building that are really old, regular folks who dress ‘traditionally’ like woman in 旗袍 (qipao or cheungsam or long dress) while there are also more modern Western looking architecture with the main characters in suits.
Next, we have the three main people.
Lu Yao or San Tu (portrayed by Hu Yi Tian)
Qiao Chu Sheng or Qiao Si (portrayed by Leon Zhang Yun Long)
Bai You Ning (portrayed by Xiao Yan)
By the way, why Lu Yao is called San Tu is due to the Chinese character 垚 (Yao) is written with three (三 san) mud (土 tu), this is the same with this sister who is 路淼 (Lu Miao)  that is three water (水 shui).
Anyway, the drama itself is pretty interesting with how they solve mysteries. I do think it’s logical but there are still certain things that I do not really understand.
THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FROM HERE
First of all, Lu Yao or Henry which is his Chinese name that I found out after like 20 episodes, speaks perfect English since he studied in Cambridge, and most of the non-Chinese characters speak Chinese too like Salimo and Norman but why the heck does Lu Yao speak in English and Norman speak in Chinese for the same conversation?? Like I really hope that they stick with one for one conversation since this is unusual for a professional situation.
By the way, Hu Yi Tian is definitely dubbed over, but one thing I noticed is that he is not mouthing the English words at all, like the script just decided to let him talk for this duration and they dubbed it over. Hopefully other dramas can take note? At the very least let them mouth the words.
On the other hand, the non-Chinese characters when speaking in English, I would say they actually are speaking in English.
***After some googling since I was interested to know if the non-Chinese actors could actually speak Chinese, and yes, they can. Most of them seem to have established their acting careers in China so I assume they would be able to speak in Chinese to a certain extent.*** Source
Next, I really like the chemistry between the three of them. You really can tell that they are brothers/sisters. HOWEVER, I do not really see myself pairing Lu Yao and You Ning together, like I would really see them more as close friends (not really brother/sister like You Ning and Chu Sheng) so when they kissed in episode 30, I was really really surprised since I did not expect any romance to really come through this drama but since it did, it’s kind of done.
A lot of pages mentioned disliking You Ning and I actually agreed initially but as the drama goes on, I think she toned down much more and definitely became more likeable. Roughly from the time that her teacher in Xin Yue Daily Paper was murdered. I could also understand why she disliked her father so much which is largely due to her mother who, roughly from the drama, was caged up by his father and smoked opium, causing her death. I do think that she did treat her father better as things progressed from episode 30 where the Bai Leader discovered Zhou Ying(?) was caught producing heroine and he really did his best to protect Lu Yao and her.
The ending was a little ambiguous for me and I really thought Lu Yao went back to Shanghai but based on the novel, Lu Yao didn’t and likely decided to really let Chu Sheng do the crime solving for the case. I might interpret it wrongly but that was how I was it.
The part where Lu Yao’s father insisting that he leave Shanghai and then finally decided to let him do what he wanted was also blurry for me. I just took it as Lu Miao was happy enough with what she saw with Lu Yao and persuaded their father to let him go.
There is one thing that became more and more obvious to me as the drama went. That is who the murderer was. It always seemed to be the first person they would interview/see in a sense so as the drama went on, I could predict who the killer was.
There isn’t really much difference between the drama and novel for the cases and such, though the one with the lady killed in the bathtub full of roses is not in the novel if I remember correctly, along with the male teacher shot dead at the piano (it was mentioned that there was a case but it was just handled by the station separately I think).
The translation of the title is a bad one by the way. 民国奇探 is more of Detective of Mysterious Cases in Shanghai kind of title than My Roommate is a Detective which really does not represent this drama well, like yeah You Ning and Lu Yao are roommates and he is a detective but that title makes it hint more of how your roommate behaves given that he work as a detective than you guys solving the crimes ‘together’.
So, would I rec this? Yes, the plot and acting was good for me. Opening song is one that I really like and have been listening on repeat. Should you read the novel after the drama? I would say yeah if you have time, you would notice that some of the lines for the characters have been switched, some cases are not there, and that the drama does stick with the novel consistently which is good.

crown prince!Lu Yao x assassin!Qiao Chusheng AU
“Yao-er, you have already grown so much,” the Emperor says with a chuckle, his hand absentmindedly twirling the wine cup in his hand.
Lu Yao suppresses a fearful gulp as he kneels respectfully on the ground, head bowed, eyes trained on a speck of dust on the ground. It is never a good thing to be called to his father’s private study, and he wonders which of his brothers had snitched on him again. He lets out a string of curses in his mind, but keeps the even smile on his face, betraying none of his thoughts.
The Emperor sighs deliberately, and the sound of the wine cup placed onto the marble table echoes across the room.
“Yao-er, you are no longer young,” he starts. “Your mother and I have been turning a blind eye to your—activities, because we thought that you would come to your senses as you grow up.”
Ah. Lu Yao thinks. They found out that he sneaked out to visit the brothel again. Must be his second brother then, that bastard met him while he himself was also visiting the establishment.
“We have decided that we should not indulge you in your harmful lifestyle any further, to prevent any damages to our reputation.”
Lu Yao knows more paths to sneak out of the palace than anyone else. If his father thinks that a simple sentence like this is going to deter—
“We have decided on your engagement with the only daughter of Minister Bai, Bai Youning. She is well-raised and—”
“No,” Lu Yao croaks hoarsely, whipping his head up to stare incredulously at his father. “No,” he repeats.
His father’s face twists in barely concealed anger as he stares coldly down at his son. “No?” He smiles a humourless grin. “We have painstakingly chosen someone of such high status for you, are you still ungrateful?”
“Fuwang,” Lu Yao pleads, desperate, “Yao-er does not wish to be married to a woman—”
“Ridiculous!” the Emperor hollers, throwing the wine cup across the room. It shatters on the floor just several steps before Lu Yao. He looks at the familiar pattern, it is one of the cups he had personally made for his father when he was young.
“Fuwang, Yao-er has tried to explain—”
“Your engagement is settled. You are not allowed to visit that establishment anymore. The prostitute will also be executed for committing such a heinous crime with the Crown Prince.”
Xi-er.
No. He can’t. He can’t just execute someone who committed no crimes.
Lu Yao’s hands clench into fists as he tries his best to keep himself together. “Fuwang, please let Xi-er go.”
“At this point you still want to care about a mere prostitute?” his father yells, slamming onto the armrest of his chair and standing up. His face is flushed red in anger, the finger pointing at him shaking.
“It is not his fault! I was the one who went to him! He does not know that I am the Crown Prince!” Lu Yao yells, fighting back tears.
“Well, you should’ve thought of that when you decided to visit places like these,” his father sneers.
“Please, fuwang, I will marry Bai Youning. Please just let Xi-er go.”
The Emperor laughs and turns away to settle back into his chair. “You will marry Bai Youning either way. The execution will serve as a reminder for you, to prevent future mistakes.”
Lu Yao opens his mouth to plead again when his father raises his hand.
“Guards! Escort the Crown Prince back to his sleeping quarters, and ensures that he stays there.” His father smiles, fishing out another wine cup, pouring more wine into it. “Bring him to witness the execution tomorrow morning.”
“NO!!!” The word tears from his throat as he fights against the strong grips of the guards. “No! Let me go! LET! ME! GO!” he yells, struggling futilely. Lu Yao had never felt so helpless in his life. Had never hated himself more for being so weak, so cowardly. How can he be the future Emperor if he is unable to even protect someone innocent?
So useless.
He cried his throat hoarse the entire night and passed out when the guards arrived to drag him to witness the execution.

My Roommate is a Detective

Tumblr media
