So
痛いのは嫌なので防御力に極振りしたいと思います/I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense at first feels like your usual gaming half-isekai SAO rip-off. Obviously from a light novel source, with a title like that. With a main cast of two girls, sure, but that’s nothing we haven’t seen before either. The art style is the generic clean and sparkly fare, with little to differentiate it from all the other VR gaming (or VR gaming like isekai) anime.
I am, however, enjoying it immensely, much more so than I would’ve expected at the beginning of the season, where I was just looking into it to be able to say I did and to discard it quickly. Most of it comes down to the pretty awesome dynamic of the two main characters, Kaede (Maple in-game) and Risa (Sally in-game). I’m not a big MMORPG player, but the world feels as if the production team must have done quite a bit of research regarding balancing stats and the continuous development that needs to happen with those games to retain players. Maple, as the protagonist, is a bit overpowered by taking advantage of an early in-game inbalance wrt defensive stats and skills, but she’s not overshadowing the other main part (or indeed all other characters) like a godlike Kirito, Rimuru Tempest or Overlord do.
Which doesn’t mean those others are necessarily all bad – I enjoyed both Tensura and Overlord quite a bit –, but it does immediately return a little bit of depth to the supporting roles by not hyperfocusing on just the hero’s story. Both the short glimpses of their real-world friendship and most of their in-game interactions make the relationship between Maple and Sally feel pretty realistic and natural. It’s like an unholy amalgam of a CGDCT shounen fighting anime I didn’t think I needed but now don’t want to live without.
It also goes to show that you don’t really need loads of unnatural drama to depict a deep friendship. While Kaede is a bit more emotionally driven in the beginning, that doesn’t mean that she isn’t learning about her strengths and weaknesses along the way in leaps and bounds (which is probably a fairly natural learning curve for games like this) and becomes more strategically adept at wielding her advantages even after a rebalancing after the first in-game event. And neither does Risa’s more methodical approach to gaming take away any of the fun she has, nor does she think Kaede’s way of doing things is laughable, other than some subtle jabs which sometimes even elicit a response by the more mellow of the two. They just work well together as a team, and other than Kaede’s initial solo run I can’t really see either of them doing what they’re doing down the stretch without the other. So, a top-notch dynamic between two not romantically involved main characters (now, everybody can ship what they want, but I think it’s not the show for you if you’re looking for explicit yuri-bait). Not too often we see something like that, so I’d recommend giving Bifuri a try.
