Hey can you backwards engineer some gender neutral version of sir/ma'am

I can! And I will. But I’m going to walk you through it because you guys can do this too. I have no special skills other than having taken Latin 20 years ago. :D

Bit of a plug first: this is a technique that I am using to de-gender a number of royal ranks in my books -- for example, the retired king has declared his nonbinary partner “Caez”, shortened from Caesar, to replace king/queen. In a book not yet published, his granddaughter is offered prince, princess, or the gender-neutral princeps when she’s adopted, and although she identifies as female, she chooses princeps because she doesn’t like the word princess. Ledan came about because I was trying to decide what one character, a duke known for his irreverence, might call a person at the rank of lord or lady if he wanted to make fun of himself a bit for not knowing their gender.

Okay, now that I’ve got the obligatory “Hey look, queer romance novels” out of the way, let’s dive in...

So, what you want to know is the origins of the words Sir and Madam. With Lord and Lady they came from the same general place -- Old English derived from the Germanic -- so it was easy to just go “Bread watcher? Bread maker? Sure let’s find something else you can do with bread” and go from there. This will not always be the case, and it isn’t here, but that makes things extra-interesting.

What you’re going to do is go to Wiktionary.org and search the terms you want to work backward from. In this case we want to search Sir, and we also want to search Madam, which is what Ma’am comes from.

On the page for Sir, we click “etymology” under English or scroll down to it, and we get the history of the word. How far back you go in this history can vary by what kind of word you’d like to use. In this case we know the history goes sir > sire > French Sire (master, sir, lord) > Latin senior (elder) > Latin Senex (old). I like to go all the way back to the Latin, but let’s hold that thought.

Now that we have Sir identified, we’ll check out Madam, from which we get the history ma’am > madam > madame > Old French madame (”my” and “lady”) > post-classical Latin mea domina, which also means generally “my lady” although it has a more specific meaning we’ll get to shortly.

So we have a couple of options!

We can take “Senex” which is more closely related to the masculine “Sir” but is in itself generally neutral, and come up with “Sen”, which has no meaning in Latin on its own but we’re not speaking Latin, we’re speaking English, which shortens everything anyway.

We can also look at “ma domina” and take that apart -- domina and dominus concern the home, the physical building, using the same root we get “domicile” and “domain”. So you could click through from domina to dominus to domus, and go with “ma domus”, since domus has connotations of household, family, etc. Ma Domus might shorten to M’us. It could also shorten to “ma’do”, but that’s two syllables and I like to retain the syllable count of the original words. And also M’us or even just Mus sounds like you’re saying Moose. Which, Moose is a pretty cool name to call a nonbinary friend, but may be taken amiss by strangers. It strikes me that M’us could be used as a term of respect specifically for someone in your family -- a parent or grandparent, a cousin or zaza. There’s a hint of familiarity there.

We could go one step further and look at the implications of the word origins -- both are addressing a superior in rank, but “sir” emphasizes age, while “ma’am” emphasizes economic power. Now, if we want to break away from both of those we could decide that instead we want to respect a different kind of power -- say, the power of a teacher we trust and look up to. Wiktionary tells us that teacher derives from the verb “teach”, and at the etymology of teach we find several variants including techen, taecan, taikijan, taikijana, and deyk (as a prefix). I rather like Deyk, because a) it shortens nicely to Dey, b) if you’re talking to someone you respect it’s sincere but if you’re talking to someone you don’t respect it’s easily sarcastic, and c) if you’re talking to someone you don’t respect you can throw a little k in, so that it sounds like you’re calling them Dey but you’re actually calling them Dick.

Of these options I really do prefer Sen. It sounds nice, it’s not a homophone for anything weird, and it implies respect for the person’s experience. If I were writing a novel with a nonbinary honorific I might go with Dey just because there’s more scope for wordplay and nuance, but in actual life I think Sen’s quite nice.

So yeah it’s fun and interesting and you get to learn the weird-ass histories of weird-ass words. I encourage everyone to make their own!

Me again! What's your favorite ship for Disney's Hook? I personally like Hook/Smee because old gay couple/friends to lovers. But I also want to know your fav ships

So, here’s the thing… I do understand why some people ship Hook and Smee, but to me, Mr. Smee’s relationship to Hook is more paternal. Disney Smee in particular is just like…that old man who is universally accepted by the neighborhood kids to be everyone’s adoptive grandpa. And truthfully, I feel like Smee is probably aro/ace and just…doesn’t really think much about romantic love or anything like that. Given the age difference, I headcanon that he has known Hook since the captain was a boy and was probably the only safe male role model in his life. Smee feels like he really dropped the ball by not doing more to get young James away from his abusive father when he was little and so makes up for it now by looking out for him and trying to always continue to see the little sparks of goodness in him despite everything.

As far as who I DO ship Hook with…I guess it depends on WHICH version of Disney we’re talking about, lol. Personally, I consider there to be three different “variants” of Disney Hook: (1) The OG “canon” Hook from the films, (2) Jake and the Neverland Pirates Hook AU, and (3) Pirate Fairy Cabin Boy James AU. The latter two have some fairly obvious canon or nearly canon ships which I am totally onboard for. I mean, Red Jessica has Jake-verse Hook blushing like a schoolboy and stumbling over his words and how can you NOT love them together?! They’re just SO CUTE!! Zarina and James are…more complicated, but just…I wanted them to be friends (or more) so badly throughout the whole film, even knowing how it would inevitably end. Seeing him actually fly in that film and be happy…I need more of that in my life. As for the original Disney Hook…okay, hear me out…I know this is a weird one but I was pretty young when I started shipping it and it just…stuck. I love the idea of all Disney characters just existing in one giant crossover universe like in House of Mouse (which I grew up on), so like…the villains all hang out together, right? And while Hook is my favorite male Disney villain, my favorite female villain is Cruella so…. It was kinda inevitable that I ended up shipping them. The two of them just seem like they’d suit each other… Both posh, well-dressed British villains whose nemeses are children and animals. They also often show up together along with Jafar in villain groupings. (And which my younger self decided meant there was some kind of love triangle going on that probably eventually soured the friendship.) They could be a villain power couple! Or…I could headcanon a redemption arc story for the both of them which might sound ridiculous but which 13 year-old me managed to do. So yeah… here I am 20+ years later still shipping it. 😅

A Spider-woman named Billie!

Miles 2020 turns over to the direction then saw a young teenager girl running towards him giving him a big hug. "I've miss you!" She cries.

Everyone froze until they got a good look at the teenager, it was a variant of Billie Mariana Morales, Miles' little sister. She's a Spider-woman in her own world instead of Miles Gonzalo Morales.

Miles 2020 had heard through Mariana, a female version of himself telling him about this Spider-woman. He softly smile, let his hand rub her back, "I'm sorry. I'm not him, but it's okay. You can hug me as along as you want." He hugs her back, she needed the closure.

From what he heard, she been through a lot. So much so, she fit the category of a canon Spider-hero. He wants to give her the closure.

Billie sniffling, "Thank you."

"Who's hugging my daddy!" Mariana sitting on Miguel's right shoulder spoke out loud breaking the moment.

The teenager Spider-woman quickly pulled away being embarrassed, "I'm sorry. I know, you're not my brother... it's just- I dunno what came over me. I overreacted and didn't respond or be a smart-" Peter 616 quickly calm her down, "Hey, easy kid. Easy. Your good. It's okay. We get it. We been there. I know this must mean a lot."

"Thanks, Peter." She noticed children around and Miguel 928, she felt more embarrassed she was crying in front of them. And over a variant of her brother, too.

"Peter is right, sweetheart. It's okay." Jess went to comfort the teenager. They all seem to know about her since she had a massive panic attack and strong emotions when she saw Miles 1048. It felt raw so surreal for her that it got her to burst out crying. Mariana from Earth 1022 did informed them about this experience and to be easy on her. She made sure of it.

"Isn't Mariana supposed to be with you?" Miguel asked being worried to find the teenager alone by herself. He saw her breathing changing and body shivering as if she's living through a traumatic experience. "Do you need Med-bay?"

"No-no. Um, I was looking for her but got lost." Billie wrapped her arms around herself, she wants to protect herself, "Sorry..."

"No-no, nena. It's alright." Miguel being a protective fatherly figure went over to comfort her, while one hand hold onto Mariana's small body on his shoulder. Aaron got off as he went to his daddy to be carried. "This must be a big deal, you haven't met any other Miles in person. It's normal to react this way."

Billie sniffs having tears in her eyes as she cries into Miguel's arms, "It's so hard trying to be okay!" Peter 616 frowns at the young girl just like the rest of the adults. They saw how the curse of being a Spider-man can take a toll, especially when they lost a love one.

Miguel could relate, his left arm strokes the teenager's back trying to calm her down. The other children looks down at the crying teenager, it made them sad. All except for one little bugger, Marian leans over her tiny body to pat on Billie's head, "Crying gets you no where! Suck it up!"

"Mariana!" Miles 2020 gasps in shock at his toddler's comment.

"What! Papí always say to push through!" The toddler huffed, "No crying! Don't be a big baby! No one likes a big baby!"

"Esta niña," Miles 2020 went to grab his daughter from Miguel's shoulder and have Aaron be on the large man's shoulder instead. "How many times I told you that's very rude?" He began to lecture his daughter.

"NO! Papà always say crying helps no one!" The toddler shouted out loud.

"Well, it's okay to cry!"

"Then why when I cry for an extra cookie, he said no!"

Miles 2020 groans, "That's different, Mari!"

"No it's isn't!"

"Yes it is!"

"No, it isn't!" Miles 2020 turns to Billie, "I am so sorry. She's always speaking her mind."

Mariana struggles to get away from her daddy wanting to roam free. "I wanna be free, daddy! Let me go!"

"No, this is your punishment! Being right here with me! Mwah, Kisses and snuggles!" The twenty seven year old snuggles with his three year old baby girl, who is trying to get away.

"No! I don't want it! I wanna be free." She whines!

"Nuh-uh."

Billie wipes her tears having to smile at the funny toddler with her daddy. It's cute to see this variant being a dad, She looks up at Miguel, "Thank you, sir. I need that."

"It's okay, chiquita. I'll inform Mariana that you're here. I'm sure she will come by."

Peter 616 said, "Who's Mariana?"

Jess said, "That's Miles' female variant. Surprised you haven't met her."

"There are so many Spider-heroes... it's hard to keep up." Peter said, having Karl in his arms, the toddler chilling in the Spider-man's arm.

Petie nodded, "Oh yeah, Just the other day I saw like ten Miguels and they were all to different yet... oddly familiar. I couldn't remember most of them."

"You remember them? I just use my watch to scan their number and keep notes. Not gonna break my brain for ten of Jess Drews." Jess snorted with an amazing laughter in her throat.

"Or 100 Peter B. Parkers." Miles 2020 groans, while he tries to hold onto to his daughter, who's squirming around his hands, "Cookie, stop moving!"

"No!" Mariana scowls at her daddy, she didn't want to be held. She rubs her face against her daddy's neck almost crying, "Nuuuhhh, da-ddy!"

The Teenage Spider-woman had already pulled away from Miguel's arms, she stood watching Miles 2020 and his daughter arguing.

Billie giggles, "Hahaha, I'm surprised you're a dad... my brother never saw himself having a family." She watches her brother's variant holding the little girl, "I wonder how her mom would feel taking care of all three all the time."

"I gots no mommy, lady! I only got daddies!" Mariana spoke up before any adult could say anything.

Miles 2020 saw Petie giggling, then sighs, "Mariana, you need to use your inside voice."

"I don't wanna!"

Billie looks worried, "Did I say something wrong?"

"No. No! It's just Miles 2020 is from the Omegaverse and he's an Omega-" Billie gasps out loud cutting off Petie. "Oh my god, that explains so much! I didn't know that world existed." No wonder Miles 2020 had this rosy pink glow around him, he's much softer and she could smell sweetness from him.

"You know about the Omegaverse?" Jess asked.

"Yeah, who doesn't?" Billie asked out loud, "I've read a few stories about them."

"Well, me and Petie are both Omegas. We gave birth to our children." Miles 2020 briefly stated, "We are both married to our Alphas."

"And girls can be Alphas, too!" Gabriella happily pitched in.

Billies blink at the girl, "Oh this is another Gabriella variant, isn't it?"

"Yes, I heard you are friends with Gabriel from Earth 3000?" Miguel said, he knew Lyla had other Gabriellas appeared in this place from time to time. He only met a few and a couple of Gabriels. Gabriel from Earth 3000 is son of Miguel O'Hara and Tempest in another world.

"Yeah, we work together on missions with Mariana sometimes."

"Gabriel? Like my tío?" Gabriella asked.

"No, nena. It's another Spider-man..." Billie said, "He's another you."

"Another me! Wow. When will I meet more me?" Gabriella turns to her dad.

"It depends... they come and go whenever they are needed, mi vida." Miguel tries to explain.

"Awe, no fair!" Gabriella pouts. Just when she thought she will meet another her.

Then Mariana, the toddler shouted, "Down with the establishment!" With her hands raised up high in a fist and her brothers did the same thing.

"Shh, nena!" His daddy tries to hush her.

"But Papí said to always fight for the unjust!" The little brown girl pouted at her daddy.

"Not when you can't control someone's time management!"

"Papá doesn't believe in time!" She said out loud.

Miles 2020 could only sigh while Jess and Peter were cracking up. "Must be nice to have triplets, huh?" Jess jokes.

"Wonderful!" Miles 2020 forced a smile, sometimes his triplets be so much. He's lucky none of his hair fall out from all the stress.

"Daddy, I wanna walk!" Mariana whines almost about to cry.

"Nope. You're gonna stay here with me." He uses his web to have Mariana stick on his stomach creating a baby carrier which got the three year old mad!

"NOO! WAHHHH!" She began fuming and struggling to be free, her Alpha canines appeared.

"Mariana, your papí wouldn't like you misbehaving like this." Miles said in a serious tone, "Look how quiet your brothers are and they are living their best lives." His sons were busy in the Spider-men arms. Peter had Karl chilling in his arms while Aaron is happily crawling around Miguel.

"HMPH!" Mariana's round face red, angry eyes made her look so cute.

Billie giggles, "She's so cute when she's mad." She got close to study Mariana's face, who turns her face away from the Spider-woman. "Awe, don't be so mad. Your daddy want you to be safe. What would I give to be with my big bro." Her own honey brown eyes sadden thinking about her brother, she misses him.

Mariana looks back with her own big honey eyes, then place her hand on Billie's face. "Don't be sad lady! It's okay!"

Miles 2020 smiles at his daughter. "Billie, would you like to join us for lunch? It'll be nice for you to get to know all of us."

"Yeah, it'll be great, kid. Mig, me and Jess are always around so if you're ever scared, you can come see us." Peter 616 said.

Miguel nodded, "Yes! You are free to come by." He placed his hand on his own daughter's shoulder trying to show affection. His other hand holding onto to Aaron, who's sitting on his shoulder just vibing.

"I can be your big sister!" Gabriella holds Billie's hand, "In have so much wisdom to teach!"

Billie giggles at how cute the little girl is, "Oh really? What advice you can give me?"

"Being sad always leads to chicken nuggets!" Gabriella proudly said out loud.

"Yeah, that's so true!" Mayday happily said. "I wanna be your big sister too. Number one rule, everything I say is facts!"

Gabriella giggles, "May, I'm the oldest so I'm her big sister."

"No, I am!" Mariana shouted still being upset she's trapped in her web baby carrier her daddy made. "First, rule! Free me!" She struggles.

"Este niña." Miles 2020 groans, "Callmàte, cookie! That's it I'm calling your papì"

"NO! FREEDOM!" She wiggles around trying to loosen the web. The adults chuckles at the little girl still wish to be free from her daddy's web.

"OH BILLIE! There you are!" Hearing a familiar voice. The group look over to find a Marian, a Spider-woman and Miles' female variant. Surprisingly she was followed by a group of Miles and the Punks plus Gwen with Pavtri.

uhhh, Maria, Doll, Annalise, Henriett, Gratia, Queen Yharnam, Ebrietas, Rom, Flora, Kos, Arianna, Adella, Eileen, white church doctor, black church doctor, Fausefka, Iosefka, Old Lady lol, Viola, Gascoigne’s daughters, Mergo’s Wet Nurse, Vicar Amelia, Witches of Hemwick, uhhhhhhh, Yurie, Bell Women, Cainhurst portrait women, Dores, Adeline,…..uhhhh….well….dammit if I have forgotten someone very important then I apologize to all women.

48) What’s your favorite physical/design feature for this character?

ATTENTION: for some of these characters I might use my own headcanons on their appearances as an answer!

Maria and Doll: their lovely super pale eyelashes! As usual, common Fromsoft W putting effort into a detail that is hard to notice by normal means!

As for the distinct design elements (which in their case their clothes), for Maria I love the cute smaller broches by either side of her main one, and for the Doll I love her cute floral-patterned gloves!

Annalise: I love her big forehead. I am worried that I miss out this feature on accident sometimes in my drawings of her (just need more art skill), but I am mindful about it!

Henriett: I love that she either 1) is implied to wear a makeup (gotta stay class no matter what) or 2) just has naturally different color for brows and eyelashes? Common Fromsoft W on details no sane person would detect yet AGAIN. Close second is her awesome top hat that no one wears like her.

Gratia: I love her red hair so much. She has the most red hair in the setting. I love this so much. Hers is more red than Cainhurst red, even.

Queen Yharnam: This is exclusive for her pregnant/boss variant, the one we interact with peacefully doesn't have them. But I love cute rose-themed decorations around her gown! Adorable detail!

Ebrietas: Her big anime girl green eyes, what else I can say? x) The very distinct feature, and they look like there are green cosmic nebulas shining inside them!

Rom: This is hard to choose because this IS the perfect female body, I think her existence alone should prove how useless beauty standards are dhfsdh I will never be her 😔 Her adorable tails is the close second, but I love that she is a forest. What grows on her back is more resembling of tree branches with glowing buds! This is not lumenweed, this is lumenWOOD! XD

Flora: The small wings. Of the 'skinny' type and not birdlike type, same as Ebrietas' and celestial children, but kinda damaged, or undeveloped? These wings tell a story. Feels similar to how Amygdalae have just lump of flesh in the place of wings, but their Kin, Gardens of Eyes, do have beautiful butterfly wings! It feels like a theme of needing humanity (?) to be truly fulfilled. Jealous Moon, eh?

Kos: I love her fins, especially the fin on her back! Well, it doesn't look very fin-like anymore, and there is clearly better look at it on the concept art! Just...... fish

Arianna: I love her purple eyes! Really stands out! I was really excited to find out she had such unusual feature!

Adella: Similarly to Henriett, I love how her brows and eyelashes color has a contrast with her hair color! Hers is paler!

Eileen: The only truly notable feature about her design is her unique mask, as Bloody Crow wears the same garb, and I feel like it won't really say anything.. The girl doesn't even have canon face data! So let me pull my own out uhhh..

I am quite happy with her beak! x) I needed the resemblance of 'crow' in her visual design, you don't understand! My initial idea for her design, though, was making her blonde in earlier life and then have silver, basically white hair in her old age, while still having skin dark because contrast is so good. It would be to symbolise a change, from "sunshine" to "moonlight".. I got discouraged when I was told it was 'unrealistic' feature for dark skinned people (and should not have listened, because Bloodborne already has two characters canonically who are blondes with dark skin). If I ever backtrack on that idea for her, consider the beautiful white hair and how it contrasts to be the answer!

White Church Doctor: In this case I will go for the obvious answer. This is her cute mole! I am so happy when other people notice it too!! When someone draws this character and does feature the mole, I am so happy ;-;

Black Church Doctor: I love the shape of her eyes! Interestingly though, she uses the same sliders as female preset hunter (in initial character creation), and her eyes are green like Brador's and have a similar shape, also her eyelashes are same color as his. Both Brador and Paleblood Hunter come from the same foreign land as their clothes lore suggest, so... same country? Or even relation to Brador? Hello....?

Fauxsefka and Iosefka: Eyelashes. Eyelashes. They use the especially long variant of eyelashes. I always enjoy drawing them, especially Fauxsefka's!

Lonely Old Dear: This is the hardest one yet, because there is nothing particular to point out. There are no other distinct old female characters we are shown in the game, nor her outfit is unique as there are many corpses in this outfit in Yahar'gul (and one in the woods). I do like the cute setting-appropriate hat, but I think a more fair one is to say that they bothered showing her eyes condition!

Viola: I love her red brooch! ...that we never do see on her in the game. But I think it is a really good detail for her design, and the best color to contrast with both her hair and clothes!

Older Daughter: This is an interpretation liberty, since this can and likely is a blood drop, but I like to think she has a spot on her forehead!

Younger daughter: Another case where I gotta use my own design! I like how her appearance mixes that of both parents rather than resembling one or another x) Gascoigne used to have auburn hair and green eyes, so hers mix those colors with Viola's blonde hair and blue eyes!

Mergo's Wet Nurse: Uhhhhh everything?? She is so incredibly stylish? fdsjfdshfd I fucking LOVE the absurd amount of heavily detalized trinkets all over her body! Get it.... because crows love shinies...... haha....

Amelia: Her very tiny tail. :3

Witches of Hemwick 1 and 2: The fact that!!!!! the eyes are all different colors??? How sick is this??? Look at this! Some also have iris whitening, same as what happened with Djura's eyes, and others have fully enlargened pupil!

Witch of Hemwick 3: Okay, you absolutely saw this one coming lol. I love how wide is her nasal bridge! Very distinct feature! (Also coming clear with my skill issue, as I do not give a justice to her eyes; in reality they're smaller and located wider from each other!)

Yurie: I really like her lips shape, actually! Very full, very smoochable.

Bell-Ringing Women: I love the decoration circling around their cape! This really adds to the design, it looks so much better this way than if it was just plain cape as is!

Cainhurst portrait women: Damn, they are all so beautiful! I guess as for Bell-Ringer resembling one, the previous point applies! Though she looks like she could be mother of Iosefka and Fauxsefka? And the knight woman has a very distinct nose shape! With Annalise's mother (I am not sure who else would wear a crown on portrait whereas not being Annalise..), I of course love how long her neck is x) Her posture is so regal, and this emphasises it!

Similar feature shared with the one who wears silver variant of the Noble Dress (basically Arianna's dress, and even identical shoes, but a bit more detailed in a couple of places). I'm gonna say though, I do love the silver variant more than burgundy one, especially with Forsaken Castle Ghosts whose hair became platinum! And the old lady has not only the necklaces, but also earrings and the bracelet which are quite modest and harder to see, but they are here! I love this attention to small details!

Dores: As iconic as her wearing a scalp of Pthumerian face like a mask is, but my favourite bit is, actually, the ungodly amount of tools dangling from her belt! My Mico in his Research Hall surgeon era can only dream about the same level of unsettling x)

Adeline: Again, she has the appearance of a Research Hall patient with the exception of larger amount of belts (she is feral!) and unique bandana around her neck! It feels unfair to point out either of these, because... yeah, sure. They just make her distinct. So I'll refer to my version of her and say that I love her hair buns and want to squeeze them every time I draw her. x) The bandana IS precious, though!

Okay that was WILD, thank you for letting me go mad dfhahds You HAVE forgotten Hemwick Gravewomen, Evil Labyrinth Spirits, Snail/Slug Women, Mergo's Chief Attendants and female Beast Patients though XD I've met Tumblr images limit so I have to combine into one image.

But, Hemwick Gravewomen have strangely elongated skulls, and I love this bit. Considering the bandage over their forehead, perhaps, they've found their own way to place eyes on their brain? With statue behind Memory Altar and in the dungeons featuring a stitch over forehead and Rune Tool being found in Hemwick, would not be surprising. With Slug Women, I guess the only thing I can tell is which variant I like more... And it is the shell one, of course x) Or simply red eyes with female Beast Patients! But with Chief Attendants, the plate on their bellies features upturned wings, and this is my favourite detail! They could represent wings of Wet Nurse or Flora! I love the mystery hidden on the plain sight so much!! Why could not Bloodborne give us a way to farm armour from mobs so we could read the description that would explain... ;-;

Okay, now my brain is OFFICIALLY fried (in a good way), and this post definitely will help me as a good self-reference! This is, however, now one of my favourite posts by myself, because.. many women.

Origins of legendary Pokemon: Gen III

I am doing a series of posts exploring the real-life inspirations for various Pokémon. Previously I have covered all fish Pokémon, all other aquatic Pokémon, and all starters. Currently I am working through all legendary and mythical Pokémon. It has been a few months since I last updated this series but I’m back now. Today I’m covering gen III. For previous posts see gen I and gen II.

Starting off with the legendary golems, I decided I’ll cover the gen III and gen XIII golems together. All of them are based on, well, golems. In Jewish folklore, a golem is a creature made of inanimate material that has been magically animated. The most famous story about golems, and the one that most modern depictions draw from is the golem of Prague. Dating back to the 16th century, the story goes that Rabbi Loew (a real person) built the golem out of clay and animated it by inserting a clay tablet inscribed with the name of God (a shem) into its mouth. The golem protected the Prague ghetto from pogroms. Every Friday, the Rabbi took the shem out of the golem’s mouth to deactivate it for the sabbath. Eventually the golem went on a violent rampage for reasons that vary depending on who tells the story. Sometimes the Rabbi forgot to take the shem out before the sabbath, other times the golem fell in love and was rejected. Either way, the rabbi eventually managed to pull the shem out, causing the golem to fall apart. The pieces were then stored in the attic of the synagogue, where it can be revived if ever needed again. The attic does exist, but is closed to the public. The idea that golems are animated through certain words either held in the mouth or inscribed on the forehead is common. In some stories (including some variants of the Prague story), the word used is “emét” (אמת) meaning “truth” and the golem can be deactivated by removing the final letter, changing the word to “mét” (מת) meaning “dead”. All of the regis are golems made from some mind of inanimate material: stone for Regirock, ice for Regice, metal for Registeel, electricity for Regieleki, and crystallized dragon energy for Regidrago. Like golems, they needed to be made by an already exiting being, in this case Regigigas. The unique sequence of dots on each regi represents the word carved on a golem’s head to bring it to life. Each regi also represents a historical time period. Regirock represents the stone age, Regice the ice age, Registeel the iron age, and Regieleki the moderm or electric age. Regidrago is harder to pin down since the only dragon age is a series of video games. It could represent the middle ages, with medieval Europe having plenty of dragon legends, or maybe a more general age of myths.

The eon duo are weird. They’re dragons with elements of birds and airplanes (the latter more visible in their mega evolutions). The biggest hint to what they’re supposed to represent might come from both being the eon Pokémon and explicitly brothers and sisters. Eon could just indicate they’ve been around for eons, but it also could come from aeon, a concept in Gnosticism. Gnosticism was a group of early Christian sects that were very different from modern Christianity and are pretty much extinct now. In Gnostocism, aeons were divine beings that were emanations from the true God. You can think of the as the Gnostic version of angels except they’re more like less perfect derivations of God who can in turn make their own even less pure derivations and so on. It’s weird and complicated. In one of the most popular Gnostic sects, Valentinianism, aeons come in complementary male/female pairs called syzygies.

Latias and Latios being male and female counterparts could make them a syzygy of two (a)eons. They might also draw from the Chinese concept of yin and yang, opposing but complimentary forces. Yin is usually associated with femininity and passivity and fits Latias while yang is masculine and more passionate, fitting Latias. The pair’s ability to levitate and bird-like feathers may draw from the martlet, a legendary bird with no legs that spends its entire life flying. Martlets are often depicted with tufts in place of legs like the two tufts that the latis have. Finally, the name of the latis comes from the latin “lateō” which means “I conceal” or “I am hidden”, which fits both the two using illusions to stay hidden.

The big names of gen III are of course the super-ancient weather trio of Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza. They each represent one of the “spheres” of Earth. Groudon represents the lithosphere, the outer layer of rock that makes up the planet’s crust. Kyogre represents the hydrosphere, all of the planet’s water in solid, liquid, and gas forms. Finally, Rayquaza represents the atmosphere, the gasses that are trapped on the planet by its gravity. As mythical beasts representing the land, sea, and sky, the trio draw from a trio of creatures in Jewish mythology that were passed down to Christianity and Islam. These creatures are behemoth, leviathan, and ziz, who were primordial beasts that dwelled in and represented land, sea, and sky. Of the three, behemoth and leviathan get most of the representation while ziz remains fairly obscure. This is likely because they are both described in the old testament/Tanakh’s Book of Job as part of what is essentially God spending several passages bragging about how powerful he is and saying therefore he can be as much of an asshole as he likes. Behemoth is a grass-eating swamp-dweller likely inspired by a hippo or elephant while leviathan is a scaly, armored carnivore that (once you strip away all the fantastical elements) was probably inspired by a crocodile. Ziz is usually depicted as a colossal bird or griffon. Behemoth and leviathan are often depicted as mortal enemies who will kill each other in a battle at the end of time, fitting with Groudon and Kyogre being enemies that nearly destroyed the world with their battle.

The designs of the three Pokemon draw from animals or mythical creatures who live in their associated biome. The lines covering them may also draw from the Nazca lines of Peru, though only Kyogre has a direct counterpart in the lines with the whale geoglyph.

Kyogre is based on an orca. It’s fitting that the Pokémon who created the ocean is based on the ocean’s most badass animal. Leviathan is usually depicted as a sea serpent nowadays, but it has historically been depicted as a fish or whale (and a lot of ancient cultures didn’t realize that whales aren’t fish). Groudon is based on outdated depictions of theropod dinosaurs that had them standing upright and dragging their tails on the ground like Godzilla. The spikes on its side and tail may come from dinosaurs like Ankylosaurus. It also visually resembles molten or superheated rock (moreso in its primal reversion), a reference to volcanoes and their role in raising islands out of the ocean. Rayquaza is based off of the serpentine, wingless eastern dragons while it having front legs but no hind legs comes from the European lindworm dragons (though lindworms being strictly serpentine dragons with only front legs is a more recent thing). Asian dragons often had power over weather, which Rayquaza has with its ability to negate all weather conditions. it being specifically a dragon that lives in the upper atmosphere and occasionally comes down to earth might come from the draconid meteor shower, which itself is named after the constellation Draco. Oh, and to keep the ancient Judaism origins going, Rayquaza’s name might come from the Hebrew word “rāqī́aʿ”which means “firmament”. The firmament is a giant crystal dome that covers the earth and makes up the sky, found in many different mythologies including ancient Judaism.

Moving over to the mythicals we have this generation’s Mew clone: Jirachi. It being associated with a certain comet and having the ability to grant wishes is a big shout-out to the idea of wishing on a star. Its head is shaped like a star and shooting stars (the ones you usually wish on) are actually meteors. Many meteors are composed of iron, likely why Jirachi is steel-type. Jirachi is also based on Tanabata, a Japanese festival based on mythology and astrology where two deities, represented by the stars Vega and Altair, are only allowed to meet once a year. During Tanabata, people will write wishes on pieces of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo or trees. Three tanzaku are present on Jirachi’s head.

The connection to Tanabata is more explicit in the anime, where the movie featuring Jirachi has a festival celebrating the return of the comet that awakens Jirachi every thousand years. Lots of comets have very elliptical orbits that only bring them to the inner solar system once every several decades or even centuries. While comets are usually depicted with one tail, they actually have two, generated by the sun’s heat and solar wind. One tail is formed from dust while the other is formed from gas. The two streamer or tail like things coming from Jirachi’s back probably represents the two tails of a comet.

Deoxys is the first mythical to be un-mythicaled when it showed up in ORAS as a normally-catchable mon in the postgame. Shame they didn’t keep that up. Anyway, Deoxys is an alien, specifically a virus that mutated while falling into Earth’s atmosphere. The idea of a virus or alien falling from the sky is common in science fiction. Think The Andromeda Strain (book and movie, not the shitty miniseries) or The Blob, or if you want a Japanese example, Space Amoeba. Deoxys is also heavily associated with DNA. Its name comes from the full name of DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid and its tentacles in normal form take the same double helix shape that DNA strands do. Its original 3 forms also come DNA: defense, normal, and attack. Speed form messed this up when it came out. I would have called it rapid form so at least it can reference RNA. The x-shaped silhouette of Deoxys also looks like a chromosome. Deoxys also draws from the idea of mutation, which is the result of changes in the structure of DNA. It is a mutated virus and it can mutate itself into specialized forms. The crystal in its chest (which in the movie continuity is the real Deoxys, with the body being an extension of the crystal) probably comes from the sci-fi trope of silicon-based alien life. Silicon is the next element down from Carbon on the periodic table and also has 4 valence electrons, leading to speculation that alien life could use silicon as a basis instead of carbon. Silicon-based aliens are often depicted as living crystals.

Ptah-Naunet

In the US, trans people are being cruelly used as a highly visible internal enemy by people who can only be described as fascists. This is, of course, affecting Australia too. I don't know what to do about it. One thing I can do is to try and discredit the lie that gender diverse* people are a recent Western invention. I will come back to this; in the meantime you can read about it at my Dreamwidth.

Right now, though, I wanted to mention an Egyptian deity, Ptah-Naunet. It was very rare for the Ancient Egyptians to combine a male god, Ptah, and a female god, Naunet (the female counterpart of Nun, the primordial ocean), in this way. Ptah-Naunet appears in the Memphite Theology, a document which explains that Ptah is the real creator deity. Even the great god Amun is the child of Ptah-Nun and Ptah-Naunet. I guess by combining these gods in this way, Ptah, a male god, becomes capable of giving birth.

Ptah-Naunet has been stuck in my head ever since I thought of writing something about gender variance. Maybe he-she is just a male god with a female capability stuck on; maybe the whole thing is just propaganda. But possibly, by combining two primal, powerful gods of creation, there is a symbol here for the relentlessly susprising, creative nature of human gender and sexuality, which is no modern invention but dates from the beginning of time.

(I have never been more disappointed not to be an artist. I imagine Ptah-Naunet as a figure combining aspects of both gods; but if the Egyptians had wanted to represent him-her they wouldn't have felt limited by Ptah or Naunet and would have drawn or sculpted whatever they felt best represented the deity.)

*By "gender diverse" I mean trans, non-binary, gender non-confirming -- everyone who doesn't fit into the neat pink and blue boxes and is therefore under attack. If you're not sure if I'm including you, I am. ("Gender diverse" gets used a lot in Australia. Hi! I hope you're well! I recently came across the term guślarz in the context of Slavic pre-christian practices and I was wondering if you know of any information/sources that discuss them? Thank you!

Honestly I do not know any sources that discuss guślarze specifically but I can convey to you what little I am aware of regarding the use of this word.

So firstly, guślarz is a Polish word. Similar words no doubt exist in other Slavic languages but I am only focusing on the role of this term in Polish language because that’s what I know.

The word guślarz is derived from gusła meaning magical rituals of some sort. Guślarz is a man who practices magic, performs rituals, a folk healer, a sorcerer. His feminine counterpart is guślarka (historically this one was used much less often but still can be found). The word gusła took the meaning of „magical rituals” and „fortune telling” in XVth century - so pretty late. My sources on this are two Polish philologists, linguists and slavists Franciszek Sławski (as relayed to us by Krzysztof Bilica and PWN dictionary of Polish language) and Andrzej Bańkowski (as relayed to us by Monika Grotek). Word guślarz is first found in Polish language in XVIIth century, evolving from earlier words gusłarz and guślnik dating back to XVIth and XVth century.

I will try my best to translate what Monika Grotek has to say on the subject of guślarz in her article Etymologia polskich nazw postaci ludzkich rodzaju żeńskiego i męskiego parających się magią (Etymology of Polish names for people, male and female, who practice magic):

However, the authors of etymological dictionaries argue about the origin and original meaning of the word gusła. Bańkowski conservatively recognizes the difficulty in unambiguously determining the etymology of, in his opinion, the Polish relic word †guslo, which was probably in the form †gud-slo and meant 'ways to ward off evil powers', and derived from the verb gud-i-ti, which in Old Russian meant as much as 'to blame, to condemn' and is related to the synonymous common Slavic †gad-i-ti 'to make disgusting, to disgust' (hence, e.g. the word gad) and the later †gyd-i-ti derived from it, 'to repulse' (hence hydzić and ohyda). Thus, a sorcerer is likely a man dealing with protection against disgusting and socially condemned evil powers, expelling hideous demons or counteracting charms. On the other hand, Wiesław Boryś notes that the word gusła may come from *gud-slo or *gǫd-slo (plural *gudsla or *gǫdsla), in which we can find the name of an activity with the suffix *- slo originating from the Proto-Slavic *gǫsti, *gǫdǫ 'to play a stringed instrument' (hence e.g. the instrument gusle), or from the variant †gusti, †gudǫ (with the old alternation *u/*ǫ), which is also indicated by the Bulgarian gùsla/gъsla, meaning 'stringed instrument, gusle'. Therefore, the original meaning of the word guslo is 'playing a stringed instrument', 'playing gusle' - and music, with its ability to induce a state of trance could be used in magical ceremonies performed by a sorcerer who, thanks to music and through music, was able to make contact with the supernatural world like a shaman in the native cultures of the peoples of Africa or America.

Here you have two sound theories on the role and conception of guślarz.

The modern associations of the word guślarz in Polish language originate from much later times - the Romanticism and Dziady (eng. Forefathers Eve) a XIXth century poetic drama written by Adam Mickiewicz. The drama describes in it’s second part a folk ritual known as dziady, typically a feast commemorating the ancestors. In the drama however guślarz accompanied by a crowd of villagers summons ghosts of people who for some reason cannot enter heaven and tries to help them access it.

Funnily enough originally the character conducting the ceremony was a priest. Mickiewicz changed it to guślarz at a later stage of his work. The later version also includes a line about how the priest forbade people from conducting the ritual. It is speculated that the character of guślarz was added specifically to include more magical and folkloric motifs that Romanticism was all about.

This is where we get the dominant view of guślarz as a man who works with the souls of the dead, this is also quite literally where we get guślarz as seen in The Witcher 3 (Pellar), since quests connected to him are heavily inspired by the drama Dziady and some of his incantations draw directly from its text.

In modern Polish the words gusła and guślarz are slightly archaic and have a pejorative undertone, with gusła being used as something synonymous with „superstitions”.

When it comes to pre-Christian Slavic traditions you might have more luck researching words such as zhrets (pl. żerca) or volkhv (pl. wołchw) which I believe are a bit better explored than guślarz.

Corrins in FEH: Distinctions between the Male and the Female

Preface

Firstly, congratulations to Female Corrin in winning this year’s CYL. Though I’m more of a Male Corrin fan so I would be lying that I am not a bit sad with the results. But hey at least he’s top 15 (for Men). Anyways…

Something interesting of all the “avatars” is that Corrin, in each gender, represents the two main paths, Female from Conquest and Male from Birthright. As it is illustrated in their respective box art. I won’t argue if this makes it canon or not, however their portrayal beyond their games have also followed suit. For example, from what I heard about Warriors, correct me if I am wrong, is that Male by default gets Hoshidan noble and whereas Female has Nohrian noble. But I’ll focus on FEH as it’s the game I’m more familiar with and accessible for me.

Let’s talk about their portrayal in FEH. In their base alt(i.e., OG) it is ambiguous which route each took but in their seasonal alts, it’s pretty obvious that male does come from BR and whereas Female from CQ. I attempted to take notes of some of the differences between the two , from castle quotes, voice-lines ,Lv 40 confession and meet the heroes page. I noticed that they do have contrasting differences. Here’s a table of summary:

Brief Discussions

Both of them have mostly the same lines and even the same Meet the heroes entry but interestingly, they have some differences in their castle, voice lines and even confessions. Male emphasizes about choices and road taken has a somewhat serious tone while Female more on bonds and cheery. Though it is vague which route each took so it is on you how to interpret it.

(However one may say as what male Corrin’s Yato sprite looks like the Omega variant meaning he’s from Revelations. But I argue that it’s contradicting with his art and weapon name that has the standard Yato. I think IS that time just gave him the Omega Yato sprite that early as they didn’t think FEH would last long.)

Ninja

Of all the Corrin alts that have both male and female versions, so far the Ninja alts are the most different and their lines are very different and it isn't vague which route each represents. If you read all their lines and the Meet the heroes page, definitely Ninja Male Corrin is definitely from Birthright and the Female one is from Conquest, the closely associated characters is a big hint. And it’s neat that they had encountered each other.

Another note, this line also intrigued me from their paralogue:

“It's definitely a bit shocking, at least you still get along with your siblings! Oh, Elise... As upbeat as ever, I see.”

-Ninja Male Corrin Paralogue 65-1

I find this intriguing because it references about his experience from Birthright and he had a reaction when he saw Elise. However in his voice lines and castle lines he mentions sending Ninja clothes to Elise, there are two theories I could think of—One, she survived in that reality, or Two, it is some sort of in honor of her loving memory.

Fallen and Adrift

These alts don’t have much indication of which road was taken since fallen are presumed from the pre route split and adrift ones are just Young Azura’s imagination.

The Fallen lines seem similar for both of them—about them suffering , anxious and trying to contain their powers and rephrasing one another. From what I could tell, Fallen Male Corrin seems more unstable than Female. While in their Adrift forms, Male Corrin is very concerned more with Azura while Female is more concerned with the summoner.

Another note is no indication about Revelations of all the alts except these alts. In the Meet the Heroes Page of Fallen(both), there’s a mention of Valla while the rest of Corrin entries none. And for Adrift, the paralogue takes place in Valla.

Halloween

Of all the Corrin seasonal alts, this is the most similar for the both of them, they almost say exactly the same lines or rephrasing in both castle and voice, even confession. Though I found some nuances that implies Male Corrin is from Hoshido while Female is from Nohr. Just like in Ninja Paralogue, they meet too and they’re BFF’s, literally “friends with myself”.

Unique Alts

Meaning that these alts have no counterpart in respective gender (yet) like New Years is exclusively for Male while Summer for Female. Despite that, it’s pretty obvious which one is from, Male again from Hoshido—voice-lines and the paralogue takes place in Hoshido, together with his Hoshidan brother Takumi, (though Camilla is there for some reason). And Female, no need for explanation as it is explicit in the title in her paralogue “Nohrian summer” and as Anna stated that this takes place in the world of Conquest.

As for Legendary Female Corrin, it’s very explicit that she’s from Conquest. In all her lines talks about the events in the CQ route. By following this precedent, it’s pretty obvious that in the near future Legendary Male Corrin will be from Birthright. And I can’t wait to hear his thoughts about the BR route too. And that would be a huge help too in my analysis I’m writing—“Lord Corrin, Second Prince of Hoshido”. It’s still WIP.

Resplendent

Recently Female got her too so I guess I’ll include this but I couldn’t find something notable. They just both doing role-play with the realm that their resplendent represent— Male talks about future as he represent Askr while Female like a dark fairy as she represents the fairy land (sorry can’t remember the hard to pronounce Norse name). So far there has been a pattern Askr for Hoshidans (Takumi is a fitting exemption and his resplendent makes sense) while Fairyland for Nohrians.

Side note, I just love Male Corrin’s special line “This is the end!”, I like this aggressive side of him.

Quick comparisons with other “Avatars”

Before I’ll conclude, I did some quick checks with other avatars: Kris, Robin,and Byleth, if they also exhibit some differences between Male and Female too. ( I only checked the ones having counterparts, unique seasonals I didn’t because I won’t have something to compare with. I didn’t include Shez and Alear since they’re new and I’m not very familiar with them yet.)

Kris’: They both say the same but Male emphasizes on training, while Female about serving and loyalty to Marth.

Robins: Same with Kris. They say the same or rephrasing some lines however in their confessions and some lines Male is about bonds and partnership while Female reminds of herself about the summoner. As for the Grimas, meh. Personally not a fan, can’t finish reading their condescending lines. “Worm this, worm that.”

Byleths: Kid you not, all lines are exactly the same, not even rephrasing, even exactly same confessions, literally copy-pasting.I may know the reason. As far as I know, they’re supposed to be emotionless for lore reasons which gives them a little variety.

Conclusion

Of all the “avatars” Corrins provide variety with their alts and there are distinctions between Male and Female, not just simply copy-pasting most lines for each gender unlike other avatars most especially Byleth.

By nature, they are the same—kind, trusting, endearing and optimistic, but by nurture (i.e., taking different paths and experiences) makes them a bit different. From what I could tell in their overall portrayal in FEH, Male Corrin seems to be somewhat serious, low-key melancholic, emphasizes choices and path to peace while his Female counterpart who is easy going, cutesy and emphasizes bonds. With these distinctions between the two, the notion that “they’re just the same person but different gender” could be challenged, for FEH at least.

( Wanted to recheck and compare their lines in their own games too but so many lines to read and I won’t have much spare time soon. So far I’ve noticed they have different support lines for Gen 2. For example, with Male Corrin support with Kiragi, they’re doing hide and seek, while Female, they had a conversation about Kiragi’s role as a royal)

In their seasonal alts, they act goofy and a kid at heart. This can be said to all seasonal alts too. But this really makes sense to them due to their locked in a tower childhood. They would naturally act this way as they enjoy to the fullest of their freedom and be mesmerized with new things.

As we have seen, it has been consistent which route represents who. Male for Birthright and Female for Conquest. Even their kid: Kana hints which road was taken from by their refined weapons. I’m certain that Male Corrin will get Hoshido Noble from his legendary to mirror the female counterpart. I haven’t found one that heavily implies from Revelations yet. It is very likely that Brave Female Corrin will break this pattern or IS will throw a curveball at us as usual.

I am glad that the characterization of Corrin in FEH is surprisingly good and gave them some depth and nuances despite how much the fandom loves to make them into overly peaceful, naïve and silly caricatures, and especially Female Corrin who is reduced to fan-service. I hope this will make people warm up more to Corrin.

And with that concludes my attempt of doing “”analysis””. I’ve put more effort into writing this than I ever did with my school essays. Like this has ~1800 words and I didn’t resort to using redundant word extending techniques. This shows how interest and passion would make you do. I did my best with all my abilities and limits and I hope I didn’t miss something. If something was overlooked, please politely correct me and please don’t kill me…

About Arianna’s dress

Also I might be a complete dunce, but I only today noticed that Forsaken Castle Spirit mobs are wearing same shoes as Arianna:

But also, to think of it, their dresses likewise are VERY similar? Arianna’s is less detailed, but the structure is definitely the same:

They are definitely very similar, Arianna’s just lacking some decorations on the fringes and ruffles where the long part of the sleeves starts, but it does feel like they essentially just made grey and crimson variant of the same attire?

Interestingly, but despite Arianna’s dress being that of a noble line, there is no person with her variant of the dress on the portrait; there is only one in that of Spirits’ grey variant! Besides, seeing how Spirit enemies are basically... well, spirits... and do have their throats slit, it is more likely that they were decapitated right on the spot and... well, there is no enemy variant wearing crimson dress like Arianna’s either. Of course it could be that developers wasted their variations steam on Huntsmen BUT, this reminded me:

Bell-Ringing Women do normally wear black/dull clothes, and they ring the bell to summon spirits of the dead, but there is a special variant with red hood instead of black with Bell-Ringing Women that summon One Reborn (so, a quite different connotation from ordinary necromancy - a rebirth!). I am not sure how well that bellringer-like portrait repeats it, seems to not even have the hood and colors are typically red + golden for Cainhurst, but what if the idea of wearing a red (or red-ish) variant of the normal wear for a special occasion persisted?

So, Arianna’s dress easily might be not a typical dress for Cainhurst, but rather a variant of the typical dress! At first I thought maybe the crimson variant was for the balls/meetings/celebrations/etc, but it is LESS pomp and detailed than grey variant as you can see, so maybe that’s not the case? Rather, whatever the occasion for wearing crimson variant was didn’t require the same amount of beauty (although still needed to match the level close enough!), and was a bit more spare? To think of it, female Cainhurst nobles DO tend to dress sorta dull:

And, notice how the baby that this previous queen is holding is dressed in red too? So, typically female Cainhurst nobles were wearing same as Arianna but dull-colored and more elaborate in some places, and red color in this line is (fairly enough) associated with birth?

So what if Arianna’s variant of the dress had to do something with it too? I for example like the idea that average female noble would wear crimson variant of the dress while expecting a child! Like what if her mother ran away during Cainhurst massacre not with her, but while being pregnant with her! And it could explain how this dress apparently stretches well enough to give the space for the belly; there is a pregnant variant of Arianna’s dress that player cannot equip normally that she gets, seen well only through save-editing:

So, dress that allows enough freedom when belly starts to grow, while also marking the woman’s current status, while meeting the color symbolism they probably like, while also still looking beautiful enough to meet Cainhurst standards! I think I like that idea for what is the purpose for this less common variant! And then Arianna, of course, inherited the dress from her mom! would’ve been ironic through the prism of this idea, since she DID end up being pregnant after all, hah;

These are just my thoughts on the matter, though! Description of her dress simply says it is that of the nobles and I just come from how no one but Arianna wears it, meanwhile the (murdered) women of Cainhurst + that on the portrait all wear grey variant and it just FEELS like it has to mean something for me personally!

I was initially convinced it was the other way around (crimson is regular, grey is special) because I’ve been mandella’d into thinking mobs were called ‘Bound Widows’ but, nope! Apparently they are ‘Forsaken Castle Spirits’ and since portrait (that I suppose depicts NOT a spirit) has grey dress too, I feel like the other way around is more likely. Thought it’d be hilarious in a messed up way if there simply were THIS many widowed women in the castle..

hey mary, do you like Loki? Did you watch the finale?

(this ask has spoilers)

Before the show, no. I didn't like Loki at all. This is funny because MCU Loki was the only version of the character I couldn't stand, while in Assassins Creed, Loki easily became one of my favorite video-game characters. Of course, that's on Disney and the way they poorly wrote the characters as this sociopath genocide who envies his brother and never tried to reconnect with his original race or anything. Even after Ragnarok, with Loki stealing the Stone, he was just off for me. And then the first season came, and he was still showing dictator behaviors, acting like he had the right to control everybody else, and I was like "Ugh white man" - Yes, MCU Loki is a white cisgender dude, and this is from a critical point of view. Disney never worked with the possibility of him being genderfluid, and a fucking 1-inch note on the side of the screen during the credits doesn't change the way Tom Hiddleston has portrayed the character as a cisgender man. And don't get me started on how problematic the whole Sylvie Female Loki is okay- Do you wanna see a true genderfluid Loki? Go watch the Netflix "Ragnarok" Show. That said, I obv pretend Disney never wrote shit and Loki has always been explicitly genderfluid, and try to write him like that as well.

Anyway, I really liked the finale, especially if you compare the overall quality of this season with the first one; The show got better. Really better. it's way funnier, the rhythm is finer, and the dynamics between the characters work well. Even the photography is prettier. Of course, nothing is perfect. They got rid of the self-incest part (thank god) but somehow brought misogyny back on. Where did Sylvie's development go? Renslayer's? B-15's? Every female character is either evil or unimportant. Sylvie was literally the main in the first season but we barely got to see her now, only for her to be left with no ending. And the fact that even Kang's new variant got more screen time than Renslayer is a crime. At least we got a lot of Mobius, he's such a sweetheart.

But yes, I do like Loki. I didn't adore the finale, but I liked it a lot. Excluding the issues I mentioned before, Loki finally got his well-deserved development and GLORIOUS PURPOSE. I was so happy I got the reference and then I got so sad. He's alone, that poor soul. And I was left speechless, for a good moment I literally had to pause the show, when we got the "centuries later" logo. His willpower and determination to do the right thing after so long? Amazing. Two words to show the most unique and incredible growth a character ever had in the MCU before. Loki really became the master of time to save his friends, only in the end for his purpose to be alone without them. I AM NOT OKAY

btw, I would love to know what you guys thought about the ending, the whole god of stories being a thing now; did you guys like the show, I think it had one of the best endings for Marvel, just behind Wandavision (both shared the same problems, open holes in the narrative for future projects probably).

Good news for anyone who actually read to the end, this means I finally get to write my TVA!Reader x Wanda series, the most slow burn, enemies to lovers, ride-or-die couple ever wrote it; yay!

What Bloody Crow and Maria USED TO wear before?

Honestly, @heraldofcrow made a very good point ( x ) that Cainhurst Knights are not "real" hunters - they dispose of their nobles that got too blood-drunk! We do, however, know what their warriors used to wear thanks to a link between portrait and Chalice Dungeons:

(The 'display' one is unused, I saw it first in Lance's video about some unused items here ( x ), at 5:40)

And now I am thinking about the fact that Cainhurst Guardians (what Bloody Crow and Leo are) hunt specifically for Blood Dregs, that are said to be discovered within hunters first and foremost, and that lore bit that Vilebloods clan, was (re)born after Byrgenwerth discovered (more like brought back) the holy blood! It is possible that THE reason why Cainhurst warriors were hunting in Chalice Dungeons to begin with WAS to restore their 'legacy'.

So, basically, the Guardian type might have been a later invention, as they're 1) associated with the 'clan' (consanguineous contract with the blood queen) 2) NEED hunters' bodies for their quest and 3) found as hostile NPCs in dungeons but there are no corpses of THIS type of hunter scattered like this, so they simply could have dived in later

^^^ There is an armour of warriors on horses in Annalise's throne room specifically that is very similar, though! If anything, looks like the same armour but a silver variant instead of golden one! Within the lore, both silver and gold are believed to repel beasthood!

It is hard to say for sure which is which! Cainhurst seems to be more particular on silver in the end, though, whereas Healing Church picked gold as THEIR trademark, especially manifesting in Gold Ardeo of Executioners. But.... yeah, you know, THAT theory:

I would think that initially, Cainhurst had the golden heavy armor, but soon enough they started to prefer silver instead! Maybe to further distance from the Church as the tension between was growing, or maybe to connect with their ancestry more (Pthumerian ancestors DO seem to wear mostly silver things, Mergo's servants and Labyrinth Warrior off the top of my head). Maybe both! Or maybe 'golden' warriors were the army - diving into dungeons, travelling lands, etc, but 'silver' warriors were bodyguards specifically, with attached presence to the castle and the queen! I think I like this one!

My point is? If Bloody Crow and Leo were guardians of the queen from the start, this might have been their armour before adopting the new style as hunters of Blood Dregs.

And maybe Maria also used to wear a set like this? Beasts (and undead Pthumerians in the dungeons, for that matter) are very agile, and heavy armour would not be effective. You need to jump and roll and run with these fuckers, you'd need a lighter armour! We can see confirmation of it with just how many warriors are dead in the dungeons. So, Gehrman and other Old Hunters appeared and helped Cainhurst to adopt different tactics with clothing and maybe weapons?

Alternatively, just like heraldofcrow said, maybe Maria WAS a Knight and not the warrior; but, again, Knights are basically internal staff with their clothes and unnecessarily elegant fancy weapons x) Their forte is killing their peers that went cringe and fail, not so much the beasts! So, again, a training to become stronger and go out there to protect the city from "plague of beasts" was needed.

Male Knights specifically have shoes of horse riders (with sharp metal plates to them, you know) and the name of the weapon Reiterpallasch means 'horse rider's sword' in German. So yeah, like I said before, it is expected that male Knights would prefer riding horses and using Reiterpallasch and rely more on their physical capacity; meanwhile, female Knights would likely rely more on bloody sword Chikage, that is also then used by Guardians! Interestingly, transformation of Chikage doesn't include stabbing oneself like in Maria's battle, but instead, you slide it in the sheath and it comes out bloodied.

Maria's weapon is also interesting, as it is not simply Chikage but without blood, of course! I feel like typically male Knights would use Reiterpallasch that is a sword, but also a gun, meanwhile female Knights (and later, Guardians) would use Chikage and Evelyn, and Evelyn Maria is pretty familiar with too!

Basically, she could have already been a unique Knight on her own, maybe already had her unusual weapon, or maybe she used Chikage + Evelyn combo but never used Chikage's bloody state. But Cainhurst seems to be the most gender-roles place, and if Cainhurst Knights had certain "norms" within them (with men being more dex and women being more blood), I can imagine Maria being 'your angle or yuor devil' with her style and clothes x)

Yet I just..... keep thinking about the possibility that guns using silver bullets were Old Hunters' invention entirely, that Cainhurst OWES Evelyn to Gehrman, and that Knights became a thing after holy blood was brought back. Because now the vampires could drink it like that! In that case? Maria and Crow could wear that cool metal armour, then Maria would adopt new style from Gehrman and Cainhurst would be the one to steal the drip for themselves! @fantomette22 made a good point that Knights on the portraits are depicted WITHOUT the ribbon; meanwhile, Knight's Wig is not only the ribbon itself but a... well, wig. It has a piece of silver hair attached to it! So maybe not Maria imitated the look of the Knights as a hunter, but THEY imitated her look in honor of her being the most important warrior amongst themselves?

Yeah it largerly depends on how long one wants to make the timeline, but what do you guys think? Was Maria wearing that cool silver armour before becoming Gehrman's student, as a guardian of the queen before they became something else? Or maybe what Crow's armour is actually DID exist for a while, and Maria was wearing that one before departing as a hunter? Or was she wearing just male Knight outfit but with fighting style more common for female Knights? Or she had unique look entirely? (But yeah also please consider..... Bloody Crow in alternative armour...)

Viral Paradox (TVA Loki Part 2)

Here is part 2! View part 1 here. Yall know I love my slow burn sicknesses. Here we have everyone slowly falling ill and I couldn't help having a little fun with genderfluid Loki. What you'll find in this chapter:

-Loki pulling party pranks and being absolutely chaotic good

-Tony being sick and drunk and sarcastic

-Big gay feels

-Loki getting punched in the face for being an asshole

Part 2:

Friday

Loki trudges into the Avenger’s Tower, absolutely exhausted. It’s early--or late? 3 AM, dark in the tower, but at least Stark provided him with a room to sleep in. He has been awake all night, time hopping into various moments of Asgard’s past to piece together the materials for an antidote. He gathered enough ingredients (hopefully) for several vials of it. But it takes 24 hours to brew. He brought the ingredients to his place at the TVA, using his kitchen counter to stamp it all together and simmer. He’ll have to wait for it--time works differently at the TVA. He can’t just hop forward in time there.

Hopefully he can prevent the spread until then.

Yes, he determined that this is indeed the virus. Don’t ask what he had to do to figure that out. It wasn’t pleasant. But at least now, Loki can curb it here.

He makes sure to enchant the scepter room to alert him if anyone enters it. Stark has peppered the room with sentires as well. On top of that security, another precaution Loki too was to magick half a dozen fake scepters, all hidden throughout the room. If the Variant comes after it again, it will give Loki and Stark enough time to react.

Overkill? Possibly. But Stark was adamant about not only having the party, but of keeping Loki out of the scepter room during it. He still doesn’t trust the trickster.

The day of the party, preparation is a minimum. Mostly because Stark already owns a fully stocked bar with enough liquor to serve a gathering on Asgard.

Loki chooses to don a female form for these revels. He is less likely to be recognized, and besides, it has been too long since he has been a woman.

She magicks herself a black slit dress, flashing a smooth thigh, nails printed with black and green polish. She can’t help accenting her dark curls with a few emerald highlights.

Damn, she looks fabulous. She plans to make sure the guests take drinks from her. That’s the plan to prevent the spread of the virus--spike everyone’s drink with magic that will prevent infection. Ensure minimal damage to the humans attending. The problem is, if someone is already infected, her magic will do nothing. That’s what the antidote is for.

On her way to the bar, Loki is intercepted by the host himself. Tony gives Loki a once-over. “Do I know you?”

“I’m your bartender today, Mister Stark.” Loki surprises herself by the husky tone in her voice. The low hum of heat follows Stark’s eyes, making the gaze feel like a brush across a canvas.

“That so?” Tony taps his lips with a finger. “I don’t remember hiring you. And I definitely feel like I should have.”

Oh Hel, Stark is flirting with her. It’s so obvious, even though his tone is casual. When Tony Stark flirts, people in Kansas can lick their fingers, hold it up to the wind, and know exactly where he’s fixed his gaze.

“If I own the bar, does that mean I’m buying you all the drinks?” Tony’s lips tilt up.

Loki chuckles. “Hm, here for less than an hour and you’re already propositioning me.”

Tony blinks, nice and slow. Loki savors the seconds it takes him to realize who she is. Tony’s face deadpans once he does.

“That’s funny,” he frowns. “I’m laughing, on the inside.”

Loki gestures to her body, “Do I look fabulous enough for your gathering?”

“Your face is prettier but that doesn’t mean I won’t punch it.”

“Don’t get rattled just because you find me attractive, Stark.”

“Oh, no problem there, now that I know it’s you.”

“Hm, are the breasts not enough to seduce you?”

“It’s not about the body--I can work with anything. But you specifically?” he snorts. He gets two steps away before he loses himself in the crook of his elbow, Hh’SHHH-eh!” He drinks in a wet sniff and points at Loki. “I’m keeping an eye on you, dust bunny.”

Loki rolls her eyes. “I quiver in fear.”

Guests start to fill the room. At first, Tony greets everyone individually, but he grows more distracted as the throng deepens.

Loki sashays through the crowd, washing the guests with charm and glamour. They all eventually allow her to ‘refill’ their drinks. She takes more than a little pleasure in this: deceit for a purpose other than mischief. Tipping dribbles of magic into each patron’s glass, ensuring their continued existence.

It’s hard not to notice Stark around the party, his voice pitching louder with every drink, pausing often to sneeze messily into his elbow. At least he’s covering them. Idiot.

Now it’s time to target the less vulnerable members of the party: the Avengers themselves. Loki’s sharp eyes skim the room, landing on Rogers leaning against a railing upstairs. He’s chatting with his foxy falcon friend. Perfect.

Loki doesn’t want to approach them at the same time. She hangs back, preening, smoothing her dress. When Rogers departs, Loki glides up to Sam, a smooth smile playing across her red lips.

“Hey there,” she pulls her tray down, bottles ricketing. “Top you off?”

Sam gives her an easy, if disinterested nod. “Sure, why not.” He holds out his tumbler and Loki pours liquor through a magic-coated finger.

“Don’t you look handsome tonight,” Loki winks at him. “Do you always radiate such charm?”

Sam chuckles, easing his elbows against the railing. “You’re nice, but I have a girlfriend.”

Liar. Loki can smell the tang of falsehoods.

“Oh?” she presses her lips into a pout.

“Yeah,” Sam dodges her gaze by taking a gulp of his drink.

“Too bad,” Loki squeezes his bicep. “Enjoy your drink~” she heads back to the bar.

Pity. She chose the wrong form to seduce him.

Stark’s friend Rhodey seems quite pleased as he regales other guests with war stories. Loki makes sure to listen intently and gives him a nice throaty laugh during the punchline.

“You’re a riot, Mister Rhodes.” It’s easy to slip magic into his cup. Parties make humans so unawares.

On to Barton, who is manspreading on an otherwise vacant couch, nose buried in a novel. Loki leans over the back of the seat, offering the bottle. “Refill?” she asks.

Barton doesn’t take his eyes off the text, hand fluttering over his empty glass. This man clearly isn’t here to mingle. It’s not his style.

Loki mixes the liquor, unable to resist adding a dash of Asgardian’s finest. Barton will enjoy that hangover tomorrow. Perhaps that was malicious, but Loki couldn’t help a bit of revenge for that arrow years ago.

A laugh bubbles up and Loki realizes she’s having fun. Ridiculous, perhaps, but this task is the perfect excuse to smother herself in chaos and mischief. It makes her feel as tipsy as if she had a drink herself.

She can’t help testing her luck with the rush of manic glee. She sidles up to Thor, who is chanting a variation of an Asgardian drinking song to a group of guests.

Loki serves them all, grinning and tossing her hair. All of them like what they see--save for her brother.

Not surprising. Thor has always been less physically lustful, his interest more geared toward the mind, not the body.

She swings her way toward Banner who clutches what looks like a soda in a glass. “Refill?” Loki asks.

Banner shakes his head, “No, sorry.”

“It’s almost empty! Just let me--”

Bruce snatches Loki’s thin wrist before she can touch the glass. “Sorry. I don’t like people touching my drinks.” He releases her and softens his words, “Bad history.”

“Ah…” Loki tries not to show her disappointment. She’ll have to come up with another way to magick him.

Back at the bar, Natasha has taken to serving drinks in a more stationary arena. Loki sets her tray down on the counter to refill the liquors.

Nat nods kindly to a guest who plucks the drink she just made for him. When he departs, she begins to wipe the counter.

She stiffens mid-reach, squeezing the cloth as her head bobs, “Hht-XSh!” her body jolts with effort. She remains clenched over the counter, nose buried in her arm.

Finally, she decides to stand, wicking a thumb under her nose as subtly as possible.

Is it spreading already? Loki was sure she had a lid on it all. But, really, it isn’t surprising. If any of them have had contact with Stark before the party, the virus would be working its way through the group. If it’s the same as when Loki had it decades ago, it moves fast and hits hard.

Loki twists her wrist, manifesting a silk handkerchief and hands it to Natasha.

The Widow quirks her brow at Loki. “Interesting choice of accessories.” She plucks the cloth and dabs at her nose. “I thought these went out of style when we discovered germs.”

Loki snorts. Not if you’re magic. She tinkles a fake laugh, “I do a lot of laundry.” She makes sure to enchant it nice and clean before taking it back from Natasha.

“Are you feeling ill?” Loki asks.

“I’m fine, ignore me,” Nat says, voice pitching lower the more she speaks. She leans her rear against the back of the counter and pulls out her phone. Her face crimps as she reads the screen. She sniffles as she types furiously, shoulders strung and hard with the weight of her task.

Loki snatches the opportunity to reach out and graze Natasha’s temple with two fingers.

The Widow’s mind resembles an in-depth to-do list, constantly ticking off tasks and filing away information for later use. But under the surface, something pulses. Loki senses the familiar spear of self-hatred. It surprises her, almost infects her thoughts, memories of a childhood in Thor’s shadow dribbling over his vision…

Loki grunts as her arm is wrenched back, Natasha instinctively defending herself. Loki has to fight the urge to retaliate in kind.

Nat pops back to reality and releases her, “Sorry. I--hpTSCH!” she barely catches her nose in her wrist. “Mn..” She lets out a throaty cough that alerts passersby.

“Hey Nat, you ok?” Maria Hill slides onto a barstool, martini glass in her forked fingers.

Nat brushes her nose with the heel of her palm. “Fine. I swear.”

“You’d say that no matter what,” Maria frowns.

“Drink?” Loki holds out a goblet filled with swirling orange liquid.

“No,” Maria says, pushing her own drink away, “Not if she’s sick.”

Natasha pinches her lips at her.

“What? I’m serious. You should rest. You’re always so worked up--”

“Actually, I will, thanks.” Natasha grabs the cocktail and turns. “I’ll be in my office.” She glides out of the bar and heads down the hall, hips swaying as she sips the drink.

Maria bites her lip as she watches Nat leave. Loki snags Maria’s drink, quickly drizzling magic into the glass. “Want to join her?”

“Yeah…” Hill mumbles, eyes still following Natasha.

Loki holds out the glass. Maria snaps out of her trance and blinks at the drink. “Um,” she plucks it by the stem, “I guess.” Her lips roll and she gives the hall a faraway stare. “I gotta…” she clips away, hurrying after Nat.

No mistaking that look in her eyes. Hopefully she will drink at least half. Loki will have to track down the Widow later. She turns to scan the room, her gaze withering as she sees the guests emptying from the party.

Loki swipes her brow, feeling sweaty and slightly shaky. The euphoria from earlier is crashing and she feels the weight of her magic pressing down on her shoulders. It’s a different kind of exhaustion, one that can only be repent with rest.

She winds her way around the party, ticking off guests who have left and letting the drapes of enchantment fall away gradually. She can keep this in check.

Something glints out of the window. A green gash of light, arcing across the black sky. A shooting star…humans do so love the romance of them.

“Dust bunny!” An arm winds around Loki’s neck and Tony grins at her, cheeks rosy and dimpled. “You,” he points at Loki with the hand curled around his tumbler, “need to relax. You’re killing the vibe, man. Lady.” He tips the drink, “Whatever you are.”

“Are you drunk?” Loki asks, but his ripe breath answers the question for her.

“You bet.”

Loki peels herself out of his grasp. “Are you mad? What about the scepter?”

“We got a whole tower full of people who kick ass for a living. Lighten up.”

“Are you not even a little concerned?”

“I’m always concerned, Mr. Bunny.” Tony takes a glug. “In fact, I--” he blinks, face popping to life. He wrenches his arm up, spilling into the crook of his elbow, “HmSHH!” his steps stutter forward and his drink sloshes over the rim, “IehGSchh-nn!”

Loki steadies him with a glare. “Lovely. Really. Now that you’ve infected the town, I believe it’s time for you to retire.”

“You’re not the boss of me.”

“Well, you obviously cannot handle being responsible yourself.”

“Honestly? That’s your fault,” Tony growls.

“Excuse me? How is your imprudence my doing?”

“The portal,” Tony slurs, “I can’t…” he shunts his gaze down into his drink, staring intently as if the ice will dance.

Loki frowns, curiosity overtaking her. She reaches out, the tips of her fingers caressing Tony’s temple.

Mark 4 Mark 7 Mark 9 all in lab--

What if he’s lying--could all be a trick--

it’s gonna be ok

No it’s not--scepter--danger--do something! Do something now!

Suns and Stars, even a dumptruck full of liquor can’t calm this man’s mind. No wonder he has so many vices.

Tony slaps Loki’s hand away. “Do you look both ways before getting on my fucking nerves, dust bunny?”

Loki’s lips twist in a glare. Tony finishes his drink and nods. “I gotta go. It’s VIP time.” He wanders away, gathering up the remaining guests. VIP time seems to be for Avengers only.

Loki sighs, a headache budding. Did she get everyone? Where is Romanoff? She’s certain she got every guest who left. All of this magic has left her feeling drained. She can feel the energy whirlpooling out of her.

Who is left? She ticks off her fingers, frowning.

The men are all gathered around a table, playing ‘Who can lift Thor’s hammer?’ Loki tsks. Humans. They’ll never wrap their minds around the workings of gods.

Loki winds around the room, hoping to lure someone out of the group when a sound stills her cold.

“Heh-EKXSSHH-ew!!” the loud expulsion startles everyone to silence. It’s a commanding sneeze--the type that demands attention. And it came from Rogers.

“Whoa,” Steve gives his head a tiny shake. “Haven’t done that in a while.”

Loki feels her blood ice. Shit! She’s losing the advantage here. If they’ve all been in contact with the virus, her protection spell won’t do a damn thing.

“Hrrshh-eh!” Steve burrows down, spine bending, “Ehshhh-ieu! HiehSSHHK!”

“Steve, jesus, are you--” Sam throws himself onto his feet.

Steve pulls himself up and wipes his nose. “What…” his eyes gloss when he sees the blood coating his fingers.

“You have a nosebleed?” Bruce asks, alarmed.

“This…never happ--” Steve presses a palm to his forehead and groans.

Sam folds a clump of tissues under his nose, brow pinching as hard as his fingers. Bruce leans down and tests his forehead.

“He’s warm, not feverish yet.”

“What the hell…”

Loki hasn't moved from her statuesque position. She is startled out of her daze when Tony stomps drunkenly toward her.

“Stark, I--”

He slams her against a pillar, arm pressed to her throat.

“Tony!” someone gasps.

“Did you do this?” Tony growls.

“Why yes, I am in the habit of giving people random nosebleeds. I’m kinky like that.”

There it is. The snark. Loki can’t seem to help sliding in the sass, even when the read of the room begs for sincerity.

And she gets what she deserves. Tony punches her clean in the face.

Loki wasn’t expecting it. She lashes out with a blast of green, summoning the dregs of magic left in her. Tony is tugged away by the others, and the room goes completely still.

“What in the…”

They are all staring at Loki. Loki starts to speak but instead of his disguised voice, he sounds as he usually does.

Shit. He pats himself down, peering at his clothes and body. He’s himself again, wearing his TVA uniform. He is no longer disguised.

He looks up at the furious faces of the Avengers, feeling a slap of deja vu.

Well. Shit.

7:26 - “like me being born the Goddess of Mischief” - Sylvie is arrested by the TVA for having been born a girl, and presumably that later meaning that if she wanted to she could become a Valkyrie if she wanted to - which i'm fairly certain it's mentioned that Loki wanted to be a Valkyrie when he was younger. This is actually so fucking stupid. The file on our Loki variant states that they were born with a “fluid” sex (whatever the fuck that means), and we are to assume that a lot of parts of variants are intrinsically the same between each other, so you’d assume that Sylvie would also be born with a “fluid” sex

10:07 - Loki and Sylvie are finally bonding by discussing what “makes a Loki a Loki” and Loki insisting that its their collective ability to survive - of course they have to be fucking weird about it which causes a Nexus event, because plot i guess

11:00 - i hate that we don't get to actually see Loki and Sylvie get picked up

12:39 - isn't it a little fun, a little silly, that the bad memory Loki is stuck in is Sif saying “I hope you know you deserve to be alone and you always will be”

17:17 - it's interesting however that it doesn't really hit for Loki until after hes admitted that he does things for attention because he's scared of being alone - BUT i don't like that that is probably reason that the writers had for him falling for Sylvie, him thinking that because she is like him that she has similar fears and thus wouldn't do something to lose that companionship, rather instead it would have been interesting in its use to how Loki has inexplicably grown attached to Mobius of all people (especially because it is immediately followed by Mobius coming in)

15:27 - “aren’t you supposed to be interrogating your variant pet?” r15 to Mobius

19:11 - “I'm going to miss these little tete-a-tetes.” “Me too.” mocking from Mobius, a bit more genuine from Loki

20:59 - “you like her.” Mobius to Loki about Sylvie - im going to kill myself

22:14 - “your female self” good god im going to drown myself its so bad - neither Loki nor Sylvie should be considered a male or female version of the other, because they are both NEITHER male or female, they are both “fluid” in sex - the writers clearly did not know, nor give a fuck about the queerness of Loki and the character it actually makes me want to tear my own head off

34:26 - okok, i think it's fun and a little silly that Loki has a big reaction to Mobius being pruned, one that's harder for him to conceal than the one when he's told that Sylvie’s been pruned - but also, a bit nitpicky here i know, it's really dumb that he's just standing there, he doesn't even try to reach out to Mobius to move him out of the way or anything

41:18 - the “No, i have to tell you something” & “back on lamentis…. This is new for me.” & grabbing Sylvie’s shoulders - clearly supposed to set up the idea that Loki has some-fucking-how fallen for Sylvie (which is dumb as even worse written than most straight relationships) and wants to tell her now? For some reason? HOWEVER, it could have so easily been (and would have been better) instead, him trying to tell her that he trusts her and sees her as a partner in crime and a friend. Because that's the whole thing, right? Loki is scared of being alone, and yet doesn't do friends, and doesn't do partners, because he knows that he will always be alone anyways. The nexus event is him finding solace in the fact that he will die beside a friend rather than alone like he's always known he would. But nooo selfcest is definitely better than meaningful friendships, why dont you fucking kill me for thinking otherwise. Anyways he gets pruned here anyways so L Loki, fucking loser.

Episode 5

Unrelated but where the hell did the Lokis get their clothes - like, i get Sylvie because shes been fucking off all over the timeline for a long time, but everyone in the void? Why do they have their clothes

Again it seriously kills me that Sylvie has no character - no likes, no goals outside of destroying the TVA, no self-reflection, she's the woman character that is smarter and cooler than her male counterparts because they need to be looked after in order to not be killed

Another note on this, we can get a vague idea of what Loki will want when everything is over - he jokes about wanting to rule an entire universe/timeline, but in reality everyone knows he will just want to go somewhere where he's cared about and seen as equal, somewhere where he won't be alone - but we don't know what Sylvie will want, we cant even conceive an idea, because all we know is that she wants the TVA and whoever controls it gone, and we can assume that she wanted to be a valkyrie when she was little, but we know literally nothing else about her, so we have to assume either her and Loki are going to figure out their paths together, or that she will go off to figure it out on her own and we won't hear or see her again until she has a dumb cameo I think i would respect how little we know about Sylvie if it were a “i've spent so much of my life surviving and fixated on this one thing that i haven't had time to figure out who i am as a person and what i like and what i want after its all over”, but we never get anything like this, at least in any kind of depth that would make it good The Strong Woman trope is what I was looking for

16:04 - “Have any of you met a woman variant of us?” “Sounds terrifying.” i'm going to bash my head against the wall until my brains are crawling out the other side

Whoo president Loki, aka the only version of Loki selfcest i can stand behind, because at least commit to the bit if you're gonna do it

The one black Loki is the overly aggressive one that betrays everyone first, because what else should we expect from hollywood. Fucks sake

I do adore that the Lokis have so easily adopted Mobius within their little group and how good he is at understanding all of them

30:18 - “Mobius isn't so bad” “or so good. I think that's why we get along.” “he cares about you” Sylvie and Loki

okay, I'm not saying that they should have made Mobius the love interest, however I absolutely am saying that. I personally think that would be far more compelling than the selfcest plot, it wouldn't be out of nowhere like i'm sure some may argue because so much of this show was spent on showing that Mobius is the only person that's been able to truly understand Loki and get a good read on them and Loki views him as a friend despite it all, on the other hand i think the selfcest plotline is absolutely out of nowhere, but its not viewed as such because its portrayed as straight and thus expected, they have little to no romantic chemistry, they have had very very very few scenes where they are interacting positively with each other that aren't surrounded with the fact that they are working together because they have the same goal and are trying to survive and most of those interactions are sandwiched between arguing. I just think this scene could have easily been about Loki acknowledging that he cares about Mobius in a way that he doesn't think he has anyone else before, Sylvie could make a call back to her mailman, and then Loki can go quiet and amongst that have the blanket thing w/o the strange glances and awkward pauses and then they can discuss betrayal and what they want to do once everything is all over

31:48 - “i dont have friends. I don't have… anyone.” Sylvie - well now you do because thats all that this will be right? :D ← the face of denial

Episode 6

I hate this show so so much, but i do really like when the silly mascot character that is kind of overlooked as comedic relief turns out to be a vessel for the villain, or at least are more sinister than they first seemed and they just become kind of uncanny and unsettling

I also really like immortal characters that have been alive for so long that they are truly exhilarated by their end

33:45 - Loki having a “no stop, this isn't you ;(” moment is so funny

34:56 - the grossest moment of the show. Selfcest, ladies and gentlemen!

35:12 - i feel like it is very important to note that sylvie saying “but i'm not you” here, is NOT her denying that her and Loki are the same, just that the experience and feeling that Loki is expressing is not shared

39:49 - “Who are you? What's your name?” Mobius to Loki - sobs it's so upsetting i can't do this - imagine how much more tragic this scene would've been if Mobius was set up as the love interest shm my head stupid fucking show

Hi. I’m a bisexual and genderfluid (currently only MCU, but hoping to expand) Loki fan that makes content for Genderfluid MCU Loki cause the series writers are queer baiting double crossing cowards. I am also a diehard yet careful Sylki shipper who genuinely feels like a traitor for shipping Sylki at times. I often think I should abandon ship, but the ship has been a bright spot through some of the worst trauma of my life and personally resonates with me so deeply I do not believe I will be able to fully sever myself from it. Sylki is my otp. My conscience is fighting my heart, and has been for a while now.

A. I understand that while the romance is a brilliantly executed metaphor for healthy self love based in Loki’s own struggles with self loathing and self obsession, (and Sylvie’s to an extent,) between two characters who intentionally click and contrast very well, the romance as presented in canon has offensive elements such as contradicting Loki’s genderfluidity by making Sylvie the token woman variant, giving Sylvie AoA Loki’s broken horn, and not explicitly refuting the idea Loki, a presumably amab genderfluid person, would love Sylvie, their “female self,” based off narcissism and ‘autogynephilia,’ instead of sharing a soul, mutual understanding and similar trauma…as most Sylkis understand to be the case.

B. I acknowledge that these problematic tropes should never be ignored and must be changed, though they won’t be in canon. This infuriates me. I often ponder if even interacting with canon Sylki in a positive way betrays my other genderfluid peers who have genuine criticism with the series and the ship, but I have come to the conclusion the way I uniquely enjoy the ship is not harmful. I am willing to change my conclusion if necessary, and I have been trying to open up the conversation over the harmful parts of the show with other sylkis. So far, they have been very receptive and truly well meaning.

C. If you want something done right… do it yourself. So I took the mistakes the writers made and I fixed them my fucking self in fanon by showcasing MCU Loki’s genderfluidity in a respectful way, demanding headcanoning (amab?) androgynous girlflux she/they Sylvie, and writing the Sylki relationship as based in understanding and admiration of each other as individuals, not shallow love for themselves. Anything that gets added to insult next season will also be changed by me, if possible. To me, Sylvie Laufeydottir is a perfectly tailored and suited love interest for MCU Loki and a clever way of adapting Sylvie Lushton to the MCU (with the addition of more Loki traits as she is a Loki variant). Thus it is my personal belief she is too interesting of a character to scrap.

C. I am planning to raise hell when if the writers pull anymore transphobic bullshit next season… down to boycotting Marvel or going on strike or even leaving the ship if it gets bad enough. The last option would…break me. I have very little light in my life left, due to personal trauma I do not feel comfortable sharing, and Sylki and it’s community have genuinely been one of my last few comforts. If I truly I must jump ship for the good of others, I will try my hardest to brave the lonely sea.

D. I do not condone the mess we were given, I do not perpetuate it, and I am not responsible for the harm it causes. I am condemning the same problematic writing choices, and petitioning to change the same uncomfortable elements that Sylki antis do, just via a different approach. Instead of throwing the existing romance away, I fix what we were given, preserving the parts I liked and rejecting what was offensive. I am not anti Sylki altogether, and I am not pro Sylki altogether. I am a genuine critical thinker. My blog is Sylki as it should have been, not how it was.
