discussion of Caitlyn Arcane's characterization and her and Vi's dynamic under the cut

This fic, specifically from Caitlyn’s perspective, was spurred after I witnessed two separate characterizations of her character, neither of which I saw as being capitalized on in the fic I was reading at the time:

Tilda Owen’s characterization: where she describes Caitlyn as being incredibly loving, intuitive, and physical, but has difficulty speaking about herself and voicing her emotions (e.g. the bridge scene, “What, you don't have parents”?)

There’s a lot of fic out there that I definitely enjoy and support that conceptualize Caitlyn as being a (for lack of a better word) “pussy hound” who easily verbally spurs her and Vi’s relationship, and I suppose I thought it'd be fun to see a different take on her character. In the show, Caitlyn is seen not really having friends, but wanting to connect with others in some capacity, and having a big heart. She’s just kind of guarded, awkward, rich, and inexperienced. Vi is the first female character that we see her age, and though Caitlyn does a great job cultivating emotional intimacy between them, it’s not until Vi has already decided that they’re “oil and water” that Caitlyn even hints at wanting some kind of relationship between them.

So: I thought to myself, what if fate had been a bit kinder? What if Vi had the chance to absorb Caitlyn’s kindness, and Caitlyn had the time to figure out how to tell Vi the way she felt? And this weird college au was born, flowery as hell, in where consistent themes of fate, the words, and deepening emotional intimacy play a huge part in Vi and Cait getting successfully getting together. The story is really all about Caitlyn learning how to decipher how she actually feels about Vi and learning to verbalize it, and Vi having the space and emotional ground to accept it. 

I wrote it in a weird, niche style, with almost a lack of fourth wall and flowery metaphors galore, taking inspiration from the way Arcane depicts their relationship. Not a lot of screen time, but oh god are there emotions. I also drew inspiration from old Google Documents I found on my computer from high school, where I was trying to write poetry for my girlfriend at the time. Shout out to her.

Anyway, that’s enough rambling and self-promotion. I didn’t really expect anyone to read the fic when I first posted it, but more than a few have and seem like they liked it, so I thought it’d be fun to try getting it out there more. : ) Thank you to those who have supported it and to anyone new who may come find it!

Took Misako to spend some time outside with me today while I was hanging laundry, cause the weather was nice.

She didn't seem to like it much and I ended up taking her back inside when I was done 😅 but I'm glad she got some sun.

Irida has always been a bit of a pushover when it comes to how Palina is towards her - she sort of feels like she deserves it, after she pushed Palina so much to raise growlithe to be a new noble while they were still grieving.

But as time goes on, it doesn’t seem like Palina’s attitude is changing. After one too many times of Palina’s passive aggressiveness, and a heatwave that’s shortening Irida’s fuse to a stub, she finally pushes back and asks Palina what is going on, and why she’s still so harsh with her.
