Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.

Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.

In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.

In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:

I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.

In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.

Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

NOTE: All of the above also applies to Amazon products featuring stolen artwork, etc., so fan artists should check too!

The La Coppia Serena may be the local go-to for wedding ceremonies, but every Sim knows Celebrazioni d'Amore is the best place to host a true party. Afterwards, head into the gardens for a stroll or back behind the lounge for a romantic view of the sea.

Personally I like my sim's ceremony and reception to be in one place, and I still think it fits really well with the natural gardens surrounding it!

Terms and Service! (this is a long one)

The client may ask for progress updates every 2-4 days, if not longer, should the commissionee not be in contact.

The art may take longer than the estimated time the artist gives. Should that be an issue or concern, the client must tell the artist.

In commissioning the artist, the client acknowledges that the artist is a student and that this is not the artist's full time job, and the client should not expect the artist to be able to treat it as such.

IMAGE RIGHTS

The client may not, in any way shape or form, use the art in a commission product for NFTs, no matter how much they offer to pay the artist. Should NFTs be made of the art without consent, the client gives full consent for the artist to take legal action against them.

The client may make minor edits to the completed commission (e.g. cropping, adding text/borders, changing brightness/contrast/hue/saturation...

The client may use/reupload the commission for personal/non-commercial use, but only if proper credit to the artist and a linkback to any of the artist's social media is provided.

If the commission includes characters that do not belong the client, additional credit to the owner(s)/creator(s) of said characters must be provided when using/reuploading for personal/non-commercial use.

The client may not use the commission for any commercial use unless discussed with the artist beforehand.

^ Should the client use the art for commercial use, provided the artist's consent, the artist will receive an agreed-upon percentage of the sales profits.

The client MUST credit the artist for any usage of the art on any platform.

The client MUST ask the artist if they want to use their art as a reference, and proceed to credit each time the reference is used. REVISION POLICIES Once the coloring stage begins, the only major revisions permitted are details that the artist may have missed and was specified by the client in the order while the commission was still in the sketching/lineart stage (e.g. a missing tattoo that's essential to the character's design).

If the client is unsatisfied with the commission, the artist is willing to discuss and make minor edits as stated prior (e.g. adjusting colors). However, the artist will not redraw the piece and expects full payment, as the client should have specified in the sketch stage changes they wanted to be made.

The client may not hire another artist to adjust the image without the commissionee's consent.

The artist is willing to edit the image post commission for the commissioner, but may charge a small fee depending on what is being asked of them. Upon commissioning the artist, the client automatically agrees to the terms of service provided, as it is assumed they have read them.

...and that's about it? Just don't expect me to be obligated to draw something. Depending on how much commissions i'm getting and how busy i am, the art will take atleast a few days to a week!

TLDR: Some bullshit drama

Well then. This has been a long time coming.

Some of you might have noticed that we removed the three cowritten fics we’d posted with Twisted Mind, aka Queerfictionwriter. Without getting too much into the reasons behind that, except to say that we’re both much happier without such toxic behaviours in our lives, the fallout has unfortunately been public.

Because Twist then reuploaded those three fics, without our permission. She has made no attempt to contact us to gain that permission, even though she has both our emails.

Here’s the author’s note from one of the fics. It’s the same author’s note on all three.

Let’s leave aside the fact that posting someone else’s words without their permission (and attribution is not the same as permission) is an incredibly shitty thing to do. For a moment, let’s look at the “recreating what was lost to the best of my ability.”

Fact check: When you delete a fic, AO3 sends every contributor a copy. There’s no “recreation” involved.

As you can see, when Bunnywest deleted A Stranger Comes to Town, Winter received a notification and the downloaded fic.

Likewise, nobody has to remember what collections they were in... because they’re right there?

As an aside, we have to admit we found it strange that Twist was so concerned about putting the fics back into any collections, given this is her policy on collections:

Anyway, please disregard all that nonsense about recreation, but please do enjoy the awkward moment when a helpful commenter suggested the Wayback Machine and Twist had to admit that “luckily” she had copies:

In addition to our words being posted without permission, so was the artwork that Winter made for the stories. Is it good artwork? Hell, no, but it’s still Winter’s.

For the record, we would have zero problem if Twist wanted to repost these fics with Bunny and Winter’s contributions removed. Google Docs records all edits made in docs, and we have offered to provide her with her sections if she doesn’t remember which ones she is responsible for. Now while legally Twist might be in the clear to repost our words without our permission, thanks to Joint Copyright, we think we can all agree it’s against all fandom etiquette—and just generally a shitty thing to do, even with attribution.

Okay, so this is all fandom bullshit, right? You’re saying it, and trust us, we’re saying it too. Who the fuck even cares about this, or the performative theatre taking place in Twist’s comments section? It’s so fucking stupid, and yes, you’re right! We had zero intent of getting involved in this bullshit, trust us. We were done. But that was before Twist took it beyond fandom.

So here’s where we look at the end note that Twist added to the reuploaded fics:

No dogpiling, huh? Well, since it’s a sensible social media policy for professional authors not to call out reviews, we won’t mention exactly what Twist did, but we’re sure you can guess. And yes, there are screenshots that tie those Amazon reviews to at least two of Twist’s close friends. But we won’t be posting them publicly since, unlike some people, we don’t just say “no dogpiling” and then point people in the direction to do it, we actually mean it.

They know who they are. Which is honestly probably punishment enough.

So no, Bunny and Winter will not be sharing the details of Twist’s toxic behaviour that took place over a long period of time in private spaces (but boy does Winter have a funny story about a computer keyboard!). But we will leave you to make up your own mind about someone who would take some irrelevant fandom bullshit and use it as the motivation to launch a spiteful attack on someone’s actual career.

And for those of you who are currently friends with Twist and can’t even recognise the person we’ve written about here, we know. We’ve been where you are now. Reach out in a few years, because that’s how long it seems to take everyone for the penny to drop. When someone mentions that they can’t maintain a friendship and that in the past people have ghosted her, it pays to remember that there might be a very good reason for that, and you’re only getting half of the story.

To the flying monkeys who are posting spite reviews on Amazon though, please don’t ever reach out. You are all allegedly adults—two of you are teachers—and here you are playing middle school games with someone’s career. We wish you nothing but karma.

In the meantime, and somewhat ironically, we’ve met a lot of lovely people through Twist. We’re leaving her toxicity in the past, but we’re keeping them.

Thanks for them, at least, Twist. They make it worth it.

A random quick question for y'all:

I've started my editing/rewriting process of gevivys (beauty)! Yay! Please keep in mind that it'll largely be the exact same story - all I'm doing is expanding out the timeline and adding extra details here and there (and editing the HV/grammar as needed). Because of that, I do have a question, as above.

If I choose Option 1, it means that I'll go back and replace the text with what I've updated, and then I'll go in to add any additional chapters (it might not actually pan out to 12 chapters, now that I've started in on it - there'll be at LEAST one extra chap, if not more, though). In choosing this option, it means that people won't get confused thinking this is a new instalment, because technically it's me redressing an old one. This might take longer, as I'd have to figure out which parts are new (thus requiring completely new posts) and which parts can be reuploaded into existing posts.

If I choose Option 2, I'll re-upload the chapters as I finish editing/rewriting parts, which means things will be uploaded in order and will be easy to follow for those who enjoy reading the fics that come up on their dash. It ALSO gives me the opportunity to keep the original chapters as-is and provide a link to them on the Masterlist for terms of endearment, for those who end up preferring the OG tale. This would be a fair bit quicker, too, as I don't have to do the above puzzle-piecing and can just start from scratch, essentially.

I feel like you are procrastinating your return to DeviantArt and instagram (no offense).

It’s more like I have little interest in returning to either place right now.

Tumblr itself takes more time than I’m often willing or able to give in recent days, and adding additional accounts into the mix that need constant posts/updates, maintenance, and regular interaction is daunting and unappealing right now.

I fully intend to return to Instagram at some point, but potentially not until I’ve gotten through more redos, have everything named, and finished the last stragglers of the early gens, so I can reupload from the first generation without needing to skip anything. I’ve actually made new formats for Instagram that I’ve been consistently working on (eeveelutions too), so I’ll have a nice backfill ready to go for when I’m ready to return.

I didn’t love the culture of Instagram very much - I found a lot of people to be rude and demanding and the habit of reposting really irks me - so I’m not in a big rush to return. Potentially I’ll skip ahead and upload the dual-type Eeveelutions since they’re more of their own thing and I have them ready to go.

In general I’ve found DeviantArt to have a lovely culture and I’d like to return there someday, but it’s also not a priority right now.

I understand a lot of people may be more active on those platforms, so I apologize it’s taken so long for me to get back to them. I will eventually :)

hi! when i try to download episodes from the mega folder it tells me that i have to pay to do that. do you know what i could do? <3

hi! yes, sadly mega has a free download limit of 5gb every 24h per ip-address, which is its main downside (i give you guys links with mega as a host because it's much harder for people to make nearly enough google drives for all of this, considering new google accounts now each need a verification via a real phone number. mega also has much better privacy protection in general)

about the download limit, there are a few things you can do: (below the cut because it got long)

1) download MEGAsync, mega's own cloud synchronisation tool, which you can find on their website here. this lets you save links and thereby queue the downloads, so you will not lose progress if you run out of download capacity for the day or shut down your computer in the middle of a download (like you would if you were downloading in the browser). also, whenever you have the programme open, it will automatically resume your download queue once your free account has capacity again. you do need to make a free account for this, but you can use a throwaway address like one from 10minutemail. just do not forget to note down the random e-mail address it gives you somewhere because you will still need to use it as your username anytime you log in.

2) use premium link generators. a premium link generator is a website that downloads any mega (or many other filehosters') links you give them through their own premium accounts on those hosting sites, then reuploads whatever it finds, and lets you download the file from their own website for free and at a high speed.

the link generator sites pay for those premium accounts with ads they show you, though, meaning you have to click through quite a few of them and several captchas to get your free link. for this, please make sure to have at least one adblocker (like adblock plus and ublock origin), and if you want to be cautious at least one antivirus plugin (like malwarebytes and avira), installed. there are some posts with good general privacy plugins floating about, i will add a link here if i find them again. when you click through the ~5-10 ads and captchas, there will be one page that will ask you to disable your adblocker - please only turn it off if you can't clear that site otherwise and turn it back on immediately after you have cleared that site. in general, also make sure to close any pop ups that open and pay attention to finding the correct continue/download buttons (though i've never really had fake ones, just mentioning it to be sure).

the only premium link generator that consistently works for me is uploadedpremiumlink.net. they give you an additional 5gb of downloads per day on mega if you are logged out, 10gb if you make an account. once again, you can use a throwaway mail address like from 10minutemail to make an account as long as you remember what your username and password is

3) use a vpn or some other way of changing your ip-adress. if you are not logged in, then the only way that mega determines that your 5gb are up is via your ip-address. if you can appear under another ip-address, it should give you a new 5gb of capacity, assuming somebody else hasn't also used that ip-address to download from mega in the same day. sadly, i can't really recommend you any free vpn services as i do not have any experience with any of them - but maybe others have some suggestions in the notes?

i hope this helps, at least a little bit! i also searched some reddit threads but couldn't verify any other options on there myself.

re: last reblog not really true. op said a lot of false things (like blurring/resizing removing glaze) also op is an ai 'artist' so take that information as what you will. nobody has countered it for now. every person whose tweets op has screenshotted is also either an ai enthusiast or invested in ai firms. justine moore for example was invested in civitai which hosted ai generated csam for over a year while her company profited off it and did nothing

glaze/nightshade work in it that they do what the team said they do. their use might be limited to future models, but they still work for now.

On a place like tumblr; its basically pointless to use them

Delete your work; it still exists in reblogs

Reupload your work with preventative measures; the old version is still in reblogs regardless of you removing it, you just make another copy of it

Delete your account; oops your work is now orphaned with a 'deactivated' username, now no one who cares abour your work can find it without jumping through additional hoops, even if you were to edit the old posts before deleteing to include your socials/website, the reblogs wont have those

Listen; i want there to be a genuine and quick solution to all of this, i REALLY hate this is the only thing on my dash and everyone is whipped up in a frenzy/panic

But i've been on the internet now for longer than a lot of people involved in this have been alive and i dont care to make the handful of people who enjoy my stuff jump through even more hoops to find it, nor do i particularly care about adding prevention to my stuff either, i would literally stop drawing before i did that

I barely get time to draw as it is and if half of my process is watermarking the crap out of it and layering it with prevention then i'd rather just not engage at all

Consider; to fight something you need to understand both sides (in terms of technology involved, not understanding why AI bros feel AI art should replace real people, thats a whole different can of worms)

Because of hand pain, the drawings may be limited-to-nonexistent. Instead, this will be more text-based, and i’ll try to indicate the speaker through speech tags or colored-text if possible. Sid’s dialogue is black tho since that’s her signature color.

Also, in addition to asks, I have a basic overall plot in mind for this AU. So if things are slow or something planned and important to the plot needs to happen, I may post even without it being prompted by an ask.

And there is no set schedule for this.

More rules may be added later and if I’m talking out of character, i’ll try to make it in bold and in parentheses.

@awingedllama added 10 years to my life with their new Nostalgia Living set, so I built a house for you all. It combines my favorite things: 90s nostalgia and Halloween decor (Yes I am ready for summer to end). It was built in Copperdale on the 20x20 lot "Little Falls Nook."

I chose 711 for the house numbers because the Nostalgia Living Set came out on July 11th; the street name is "Winged Llama Lane" for obvious reasons, but I felt clever about it nonetheless lmao. I hope you all enjoy!

Just a follow up question because I’m paranoid as heck and want to get this right (I’m sorry if this sounds stupid, I just want to make sure).

I never thought about saving gifs outside of Tumblr and reuploading.

If you use the gif search to add gifs directly to your post, with Tumblr automatically saying [by gif maker] under the gif, is that all that needs to be done? Or is adding an additional line of text with credit in your post the right thing to do? (So you’d be seeing [by gif maker] twice in the post)

No it doesn't sound stupid at all! I totally understand your anxieties, I was the same when I first joined Tumblr.

If you use the gif search function and add a gif that way, Tumblr automatically credits the creator (or in any case, the uploader of the gif), so you don't have to credit with an extra line of text!

Ethan calls out xQc for ‘taking attention and views’ from creators with react videos

Recently, XQc faced fire for reuploading YouTube videos from producers as response content, and Ethan called him out in a live debate. When H3 Podcast's Ethan Klein claimed that xQc's react videos were stealing from YouTubers, xQc claimed he was assisting them by showcasing their work with his name in order to "make something good happen." Ethan disagreed. “You litterally do it to enrich yourself. You’re not creating anything big for anyone. You’re just taking attention and views for yourself and you don’t give a fuck about the consequences,” he said in a podcast from Aug. 7. “It’s not your decision to make that for other people’s property.” https://twitter.com/h3h3productions/status/1688743211349823488 In the podcast, Ethan said he talked to YouTuber Vince Vintage and considered him as victim of his reacts. “He really just steals my shit,” the content creator reportedly said to Ethan. “The problem isn’t the reacting, it’s the reupload of my video with his face on the thumbnail.” XQc said he would apologize to him and pay him, if he came forward. “I’d be more than happy to give him ten times whatever damage that’s caused,” he answered Ethan in the podcast. At the end of July, xQc received backlash from YouTubers he used content from. On July 28, content creator Bub Games blamed him for sharing his video live without adding any commentary value. Then, he posted it as a VOD on YouTube, thus diverting a part of his audience. The YouTuber was followed by others over the following days. The debate on the H3 Podcast lasted almost two hours and progressively escalated until xQc and Ethan insulted each other personally. It pushed the latter to cut the debate short, without them reaching any agreement on the copyright matter. Twitch streamer HasanAbi, who often does react content, watched the podcast on his Twitch channel and added his opinion on the issue. Hasan said he was making sure he didn’t harm content creators when making react content, but also that he couldn’t always know when he did so. “It ultimately comes down to the reupload to YouTube and whether that individual content creator likes that you reacted to their videos or not,” he said. “They can’t DMCA me because I don’t upload it to my YouTube channel and they won’t make a fuss about it because … they don’t want additional problems.” He was referring to the example of Vince Vintage, who complained about xQc’s react videos to Ethan, but not to xQc. For Ethan, it’s due to the fact nobody wants to be at war with xQc and make themselves a target to his audience. Under xQc’s react videos, users can read a mention in the description that allows people who “own copyrighted materials” in the video to contact the editor if they want it to be removed. It’s unclear what’s the process if they do so, however. Legally, users have the right to issue copyright claims on videos that use their content without their consent. But the process might be long, and while it can be simple to get a video demonetized, it might be trickier to get it removed. REUPLOAD: I accidentally deleted my original post, since I do not remember what I said exactly, I will be trying my best to restate what I have discussed previously.

We were tasked to create a Concept Web regarding the interconnections between Climate Change and Mental Health

I was unable to utilise images in creating my concept web as I believe it would have been too crowded and would distract one from the main points of the web.

My concept web has several parts and these parts are grouped and separated by colour. Two of the colours are the only ones of their kind, namely green and purple, I wanted them to be distinct and be noticeable among the crowd as I wanted to visually show the 2 main points we are connecting in this task, and that is the correlation of Climate Change and Mental Health.

At first, one might not be able to see the correlation, but if one were to think about the effects of each one, it starts to come full circle and connect in ways one might previously might not have seen.

Climate change is caused by several things but I mainly pointed out two, which was deforestation and pollution colored in blue. We know that pollution is one of the greatest causes of Climate Change. It creates greenhouse gases that trap heat in the earth and once the earth heats up, the usual temperature changes causing the weather to change and in turn the overall climate. Deforestation, too, causes this by creating a lack of trees and plants that store carbon dioxide – a well known greenhouse gas – in them which in turn lets more of carbon dioxide just existing in the atmosphere.

Pollution and Deforestation causes several other problems as well which can and have affected plenty of lives. One of these is being the direct and indirect cause of sickness. And after sickness it causes Epidemics and what we have now, the Pandemic.

The Pandemic in turn caused a multitude of problems, physically which destroyed us as well mentally. The sudden physical and environmental change that occurred during the pandemic took a massive toll on severalls mental health. Many like familiarity and routine, but because of the pandemic it all changed. The added stress caused by the sudden changes in addition to having to be much more cautious and needing to be more attentive with one’s everything can severely cause negative effects on one’s mental stability. That, and with the constant fear and terror in the possibility that you or your loved ones can die by a measly little virus is not good for everyone.

But besides Climate Change causing more sicknesses to arise, it also has other effects that affect people’s mental health. Some of which are lack of supply, lack of food, lack of water among other things. Studies have shown that starvation impairs critical thinking and causes people to resort to extremely negative actions they wouldn’t do if they were not in such a state. Having an unstable environment to live in also causes a lot of stressors and saddening realisations of one’s living conditions. 

I was unable to put all my thoughts in the chart for it lacked space and I lacked time to do so but I believe that I have put all the things I wanted to point out.
