Apparently in my absence this post had its 1000-notes-iversary.

This time we get to see the culprit responsible for ruining our heroes' lives as well.
I've really missed you guys, by the way. I know I've said that already, but I'm serious. Once or twice this year I've been right on the brink of coming back but schedule stuff always keeps me from letting myself commit to that again, and that in turn has kept me from posting anything at all. But I've been in an unexpected drawing mood lately and so if I can get enough stuff to set up a queue we might pretend I'm back for a month or so sometime this year. Maybe. Hopefully. We'll see. No promises though. That's why I'm hiding this paragraph under the cut.

I feel like Tolkien's insistence on so many of his female characters being overwhelmingly fantastically beautiful should bother me more than it does, but I can't really bring myself to care. Maybe it's the breathless descriptions of Túrin, Fëanor, Dior, etc, idk.

Having (probably stupid) thoughts on Húrin and Aerin parallels (a rare post where it’s mostly in the tags because I’m unsure if it means anything yet)

🐅 with any narn character
🐅(characterisation): Túrin is musically talented! From the Lay of the Children of Húrin:
“in weaving song he had a minstrel’s mastery, but mirth was not in it, for he mourned the misery of the men of Hithlum”
I feel like it’s a thing that goes ignored, Túrin isn’t just some walking disaster who can’t do anything right. He’s a very capable and talented, and at times can be very charismatic. But there’s so much to imagine with this in particular! Young Túrin singing for Thingol and Melian, or playing music for Nellas to dance to as they play at being Daeron (or even Beren) and Lúthien! Beleg first noticing how beautiful he’s become when he sings for him. There's also the Laer Cú Beleg!
On an angstier note (heh!) because I’m evil, Túrin singing Nienor songs from his childhood while she’s recovering. She can’t say she’s ever heard them before, yet their strange familiarity comforts her…

It's almost easy to think of Beren and Turin and Tuor as belonging to the same generation, because theirs are the three Great Tales, but Beren is, in fact, part of the generation of Hurin and Huor (and he's literally Morwen's cousin of course). And upon further thought, it might be said that he paved the way for the other two in some ways. Turin certainly only gets to be raised in Doriath because of events described in the lay of Leithian and often seems to almost be in the shadow of his famous kinsman. Beren's story seems to be the motivation behind the ill-thought plan of waging solo guerilla warfare a teen Turin comes up with, and the memory of Beren definitely precedes him in Nargothrond. One could speculate that its the association with his cousin, his famous love story and the hope he brought that causes Finduilas to fall in love with Turin, and his experience of Nargothrond both stems from and undoes developments caused in the lay. We know far less about Tuor's stay in Gondolin, but it seems likely the knowledge of Beren would also influence how he was taken in there (and of course Tuor was also Beren's cousin once removed, though he's far more often connected with his Hadorian heritage)
In fact both the other Great Tales start right after that of Beren and Luthien ends - with the Nirnaeth, inspired by the successful theft of the Silmaril as the link in between.

so when i worked at heb doin overnight stocking, i was allowed to wear earbuds for music, etc. i have so many music playlists that it's ridiculous but i really wanted some other things to listen to. consuming *new* media is often hard for me n so that crossed off all the podcasts i've ever considered listening to. in the end i subscribed to audible solely to get audio book versions of tolkien's works. i listened to children of húrin this way over the span of a few nights n i really jus have been on a revival of hyperfixation since then
anyways i've been thinkin about beleg n túrin so much n there's a few things i took away from my rereading this time, so i thought i'd share.
1) túrin is hella autistic. he jus is. maybe this isn't a new take to anyone else but it's new to me n as someone who's recently discovered that i'm autistic it really jus. makes So Much Sense (n also explains why the hell i was so "omg he is me" about túrin when i was 11 readin the silmarillion for the first time)
2) you ever think about anglachel? how melian warned beleg "this sword will not love the hand it serves and it will not be with you for long" (paraphrasing)? i've always operated under the assumption that the prevalent interpretation of those is that indeed anglachel hated beleg n betrayed him (death by its blade in túrin's hand). but i saw art on here recently that was like "anglachel doesn't have nice things to say to túrin" n it was jus the sword goin "i hate you hate you hate you" as túrin held it. n it made me do a real think.
beleg didn't really need a sword. he's known as the strongbow for a reason, right? but he thought he might need one in case he does more close up battle w orcs n stuff while on his hunt for túrin. he ends up pickin anglachel n then keeps it anyway despite melian's words; n if we go by melian's words n túrin's later interaction w it, then we can assume the sword is maybe a lil bit sentient. so maybe it appreciates that beleg kept it despite the warning. n maybe it sensed a person who would appreciate it in turn, for it was made of starmetal n beleg was one of the unbegotten.
anyways it's literally not mentioned at all after that until the Big Thing later. like. this supposedly malicious sword is w beleg for how long??? the entire time beleg serves túrin while among the outlaws, n never once is it mentioned that the sword brings about any mischief. literally nothin bad happens w the sword until it is tasked to cut túrin's bonds, n *then* it slips to cut him directly, n that leads to beleg's death. people read this as a betrayal of beleg, right, but i argue it's not. i think the sword sensed túrin's doom, n knew he would lead its master, beleg, to doom as well, n looked to hinder túrin w pain w/out considerin that túrin would wake n think beleg an orc n kill him.
i know it's kind of an ehhhh argument but my last point, hear me out: the sword confirms it only ever thought of beleg as its master. when túrin is gonna commit the die n asks the sword if it'll end him quickly, the sword answers "i will drink your blood so that i can forget the taste of the blood of my master, beleg, and of brandir unjustly slain" like??? the sword has loyalty AND a sense of justice? anglachel, even after bein reforged n renamed to gurthang, still thought of beleg as its master. i don't think it hated beleg - i think it hated túrin, the hand it served in the inexorable twists of doom that surrounded the son of húrin
anyways i'm on a kick again i might post more Hot Takes

For the Silm asks: 6 (👀), 13, 20, please!
6. Best m/f ship?
You already know the answer to this one, but I feel like I'm cheating if I say Andreth/Aegnor, since they aren't even on the published silm, and THAT'S A TRAVESTY. I have so many thoughts and feelings on this pairing that it would require its own post (or blog lmao).
If we don't count them I'm not very emotionally invested in the canon ships of the Silmarillion, to be quite honest. I do like the interracial pairings though: Beren/Lúthien, Idril/Tuor. I am also quite intrigued by the dynamics of Finarfin/Eärwen.
A non canon m/f ship I quite enjoy is Elendil/Tar-Míriel, both as one-sided when they were young, or in an AU where Míriel survives. I also enjoy the dramatics of Tar-Míriel/Sauron, as in both pretend to like each other to further their political goals, but in truth absolutely detest each other.
13. Where in Middle-Earth would you most like to live?
Is it cheating if I say Númenor? Since it's not technically Middle Earth but... it is supposed to be paradise, a variety of climates and ecosystems, always near the sea, and at least until they started getting weird with the human sacrifices, a peaceful and prosperous place to live. Early Númenor would be my first choice.
The second option would obviously be the Shire, for similar reasons: peaceful and prosperous, apparently quite nice weather. Points deducted for being far from the sea.
Other places I'm curious about and would visit, but probably not live: Gondor (too close to Mordor), Arnor (while it existed), Lindon (Gil-Galad seemed like a pretty chill guy who would allow other races into his realm), Laketown (the Venice of Middle Earth!), Gondolin (if it were possible to get an exit visa lmao), and Nargothrond (what? I'm curious).
20. Funniest moment in the Silm?
It has to be the moment Beren tells Thingol he has a Silmaril in his hand, but it just happens that his hand is not here. Gotta love Beren, what a legend.

Knowing Bilbo’s effect on elvenkings and elven lords (and elves in general), it’s probably just as well Thingol never made it to the Third Age.  He wouldn’t have stood a chance.

Even before Thangorodrim, Húrin is shown images depicting the death or harm of his family. Some of these are framed as current reality, some of them framed as threats or future. Sometimes his memory of an illusion will be removed so he can be shown an altered version. Soon, he has no idea what to truly believe and mourns a hundred times for a hundred reasons, all before he will inevitably be chained to watch more of their suffering

I have a horrible headcanon that Túrin and Nienor’s marriage in Brethil involved cutting each other’s hands and intermingling their blood. This parallels Túrin and Beleg’s “blent in battle the blood of their wounds” but also, it's already the same blood...
