lavender for luck by lovelylogans
Status: Complete
Summary: Virgil's uncle can cast spells, and read fortunes, and hear houses talk through their noisy creaks. Virgil's father had, too, when he was alive, and their mother before them. Virgil was born with the family's tawny eyes, the family's pale skin, and the family's magic. And the people they fall in love with—or, at least, the ones who love them back—all die, which is why Virgil knows he can never take the chance of having that for himself.
Relationships: LAMP
CW: Implied/Referenced Character Death, Parental Death, Spiders, Animal Cruelty, Swearing, Arguing, Physical Confrontation, Deceit
My thoughts: I know I’ve recommended this one before. I know I’ve already stopped myself from rec’ing it again on my fantasy rec list. But a Halloween rec list just Would Not be complete without it. It’s wonderfully witchy. Virgil has magic, does tarot, and he grew up with it all. His family, in their small town, has magic too. The setting is wonderful, between this small town of superstition and university where Virgil pretends he doesn’t have magic. It’s a wonderful read for this time of year.
Death Waits Downstairs by l0calcryptid
Status: Complete
Summary: Roman is a prince looking for adventure, and he finds it in the form of an entrance to hell. There's a dead-King ruling there, and he's looking for someone to keep him company. And there's a boy who keeps appearing at night-and somehow Roman's falling in love.
Relationships: Prinxiety
CW: Blood Mention
My thoughts: It’s short, but it’s so cool to read. It reads like a spooky fairy tale. The ambiance is whimsical yet ominous, and the setting is enthralling. Roman is a prince, but he’s not the prince of Disney that we see so often. He’s haunting and quiet, and the people around him are weary and afraid for him. The tone of the story is just so mysterious, and I love it.
Rainy Sleepiness by AprilLilypegasi
Status: Complete
Summary: Virgil stands in front of his favorite window, a soft smile on his face as he watches the rain fall outside. Nothing’s able to calm him quite like the rain. Well, and Roman. Roman certainly knows quite a few tricks to get him to relax and not stress so much. But with relaxation comes a few other…trickier problems.
Relationships: Prinxiety
CW: N/A
My thoughts: This is a more recent read, but I really loved it. It’s a oneshot, and it’s tender and sweet. I don’t know y’all. Between the prinxiety and the ghost Virgil and the siren Roman... The rain outside, the soft humming, the sleepy feeling... I just really vibed with it. It’s a soft read, and it’s also a quick one. If you don’t have the energy or time for anything too intensive, this one could be good for you!
Flower from the Fae by winterknight1087
Status: Complete
Summary: Virgil likes plants, but when he goes to investigate a plant his friend, Remy, tells him about, he doesn’t exactly check out the plant. Little does he know that the handsome man he meets there is a fairy who is about to challenge the world Virgil knows.
Relationships: LAMP, Picani/Sleep, Demus
CW: Snake, Injury Mention, Anxiety Attacks, Alcohol Mentions, Discussions of Past Trauma, Car Crash Mention, Abusive Parent
My thoughts: For one, it’s not just fae. I won’t say much other than that--just that there is spookiness and other kinds of Halloween-y vibes. Also, an actual Halloween chapter!! The fic starts off pretty cute and gets more mysterious and angsty. It has such a range in emotion, the characterization is wonderful, and the plot is structured so thoughtfully. Do you like foreshadowing? Because this one will make you scream from it. Everything feels pieced together so well. Honestly, please just read it.
The Music of Spectres by Cryptic_Stories
Status: Incomplete (on Hiatus)
Summary: Set in the small village of Canterbury, where the locals gather in their favorite coffeeshop and share stories and gossip. The most infamous and well-known story by far is Jodi Thompson's: She makes the seemingly impossible claim that a ghost inhabits the abandoned inn at the edge of the village. The eccentric newcomer in town, named Roman, has just bought said inn--and he is determined to clean the place up and make it his own, no matter the old rumors surrounding the place. I mean, they're just rumors, right?
Relationships: Prinxiety, Logicality
CW: Suspense, Past Character Death, Cursing, Homophobia (past), Distressing Images, Helplessness
My thoughts: This is one of my favorite authors!! And this is one of my fave tropes!! You know what that means? I screamed when I found this. This takes place in a small town and in a house that Roman has just bought that he learns is haunted. It’s suspenseful but also mysterious. There’s lots to learn about the ghost he’s met in the house--Virgil--and even more to learn about the other entities as well. I can’t wait to learn more!
