Alfalfa Weevil - Hypera postica

You may need to zoom in on these images to see the identification markers of this bulky little brown bean. The dark dorsal band is very prominent, but what might be missed is the thinner stripe along the thorax within that band. There can also be curved "m-shaped" markings where the wingcase meets the thorax and rest of the wingcase appears hairy, with some lines resembling stitching. Otherwise, this insect has all the features of a traditional Snout Beetles and it's a lovely snout at that! At the end of that snout sit the antennae, and while it might look like they could get it the way of feeding, they can fold backwards and give the snout more room to eat or to tunnel while still providing valuable sensory information. They must work well, as the bean let go and fell into the grass below when I tried to get a closer look. Hopefully the next Weevil found is less skittish, but I'm not sure when that will be as there was no alfalfa to be found in the surrounding area.

As the common name hints, the alfalfa crop is this Beetle's primary source of food, both as a larva and as an adult! This (combined with their ravenous feeding potential) gives this specie status as a significant pest in North America. Their numbers can be successfully managed via certain parasitic Ichneumon Wasps which target the Beetle larvae. Since the insect solution to control the pest population and maintain stability with alfalfa production was imported, this was likely a huge gamble at the time. Careful monitoring of the ecosystem is ongoing to determine if it was the right call in the long term. It's certainly practical to monitor your plants and see what insects are nibbling at the leaves and flowers. The larvae here grow large from skeletonizing alfalfa leaves! While reviewing the damage caused by the grubs and seeing images of captured specimens, Alfalfa Weevil grubs came to remind me of Sawfly larvae since they can be numerous on their host plants and the have ravenous appetites! They also have colorful, soft, cylindrical bodies with prominent (differently-colored) heads. If you find a green Caterpillar-like creature with a brown head rummaging around your plants, you've probably found a young Alfalfa Weevil. if there is also a white stripe running down the insect's "spine" and no legs, it's time for pest control.

Synopsis: Daenarya leaves Mal with Tyril while she and Maiele go shopping. This is part of my “a Hand to Hold” series.

The seaside city hummed with the joyous roar of the bustling crowd. The Port Parnassus market teemed with natives and visitors alike. The cobblestone streets were not unknown for being filled with throngs of travelers coming and going, buying and selling. Yet, this week was different as the city prepared for the biggest celebration of the year. The summer festival was underway, welcoming the season of growth, trade, and fair weather. As defenders of the realm, the group of heroes was invited to attend and participate in the festivities. 

Mal shoveled a tray of Purple Parnassian in his face, savoring the unique texture followed by the spicy, throat-burning aftertaste which set his mouth aflame.

"Are you quite finished?" Tyril folded his arms across his chest. His eyes narrowed on the glint of purple liquid staining the corner of the Rogue's lips that had begun to drip down his chin, tangling in his beard.

"Just one more. Maybe two?" Mal held up three fingers to Alfonso. 

The mustachioed man chuckled at his hunger. He had never met anyone who enjoyed the tongue melters as much as Mal Volari. Before, that was bad for business; he never knew if the payment he would see would be physical coins or more of a metaphorical IOU. Now, he knew Mal was good for it. He plated three for his best patron, packing up a small tray for him to take and share with his better half.

"Watch it," Tyril hissed as a pair of grizzly mariners brushed past him, knocking him precariously close to the violet staining food. 

Mal paid little attention to him. He slurped the oysters down one after another, without pause, humming his satisfaction as the Port Parnassian delicacy lit his throat on fire. His tongue was not the only thing that had turned purple. His fingers and beard dripped of the color.

Tyril growled, throwing a rag at him. His mouth wrinkled in disgust. "It's a mystery to me how Daenarya can tolerate such barbaric and uncivilized displays."

Mal's brow quirked as he slowly and suggestively licked his lips and fingers clean, putting on his best show for Tyril. 

The elf's face fell into the palm of his hand as he exhaled a sigh of frustration. "I suppose it is my fault for hoping you could manage a small amount of decorum as we're preparing to receive an honor. How Daenarya settled for a ruffian manchild like you, I cannot comprehend."

"You're one to talk; gods know how Maiele fell for you. Maiele knows how to have a good time, what he sees in you—" Mal tossed a handful of gold coins in the vendor's jar and accepted the package he had prepared. "I'll be back. Save some for your favorite patron." He winked before turning to Tyril.

"Can we please depart now?" His words turned into a grumble as he was bumped once more by people passing by.

"Sure thing." Mal laced his fingers with the Mage's, his hand small in comparison, but it made little difference to him. Everyone knows size is secondary to skill of use in all things. 

"What in heavens—" He stammered, his cheeks warming to a violet shade that began to rival Mal's tongue. His brow turned inward. "What do you think you're doing?" He attempted to pull his hand away, but the Rogue tightened his grasp. 

"For safety. Daeny and I tell the boys all the time to hold hands in crowded places so that they don't get lost." 

"They're—they're children," he stammered, at a loss for further words.

Mal shrugged. "Lost is lost. You told me you wanted me to be more responsible." He lifted their joined hands, an amused grin dancing on his face. "Safety first!"

Tyril made one last attempt to free himself from Mal's grasp. "I will kill you."

"Good luck explaining it to Daenarya... oh and we both know you won't"

"I hate you."

"Love you, too."

Tyril stalked forward, dragging Mal along as he pushed through the crowd. They couldn't be reunited with Maiele and Daenarya soon enough. Next time, he would not complain about how long they took buying clothes. Anything was better than this.

This is not what I planned to write, but then I had this idea so here it is?

Hi, dear. There’s the timeline for April 2022. I believe he flew back to the UK between Coachella weekend one and two, a lot evidences pointing to that. And then after weekend 2, he filmed his Zane Lowe interview on the 23rd or maybe the 24th and went back to London.

Cluster Fly - Pollenia sp.

When I first uploaded this drab looking specie of Fly to the blog last year, I had only found one on the leaves. With a name like “Cluster Fly”, you would expect many individuals grouping closely together and hanging around to enjoy the warmth of a new spring. While I can honestly say that the Flies I found weren’t exactly super close to each other, the warm afternoon weather caused many individuals to come outside and swarm around. It was hard to get a moment’s peace outside with Fly after Fly landing on me or nearby and needing to be shooed away. It wasn’t quite a cloud, but there could’ve been at least 20 Flies nearby, and maybe more if some flew away and others took their place! If this is what they’re like outside, just imagine what happens when they hide away in confined spaces during the winter such as inside houses! Have no worries because as pesky as Cluster Flies sound, they only enter houses to escape the cold. When winter arrives, they enter diapause and await the end of winter to become active again: with their metabolism slowed down, they won’t breed. Even if they wanted to breed indoors, Clusters Flies seem to rely on parasitizing earthworms with their eggs. Maybe if have any potted indoor plants you might want to check the soil if you’ve seen adult Flies near them. 

A bigger problem that’s been reported with Cluster Flies is if they were to die indoors they may draw other predators indoors in search of an easy meal. Before searching your homes (inside and out) for a potential cluster invasion, remember that there are always signs you can watch for and ultimately they aren’t as big a pest as other types of Flies. They don’t tend to spread filth (beyond any germs in soil) and they feed on pollen from flowers rather than rotting material or garbage. I’d still recommend you wash your hands after handling them, and speaking of handling them, this is the first time I’ve ever stuck a finger out to a Fly and it actively climbed aboard. These insects aren’t skittish and react much slower compared to Blowflies or Hoverflies. While this makes me appreciative for the closer look at them, I do fear for their safety if they are sluggish aren’t predators. Perhaps the summer broods have more speed to spare, but if there is evidence to support that, I have yet to see it. If I find any answers, I’ll create a follow-up post, but these Flies tend to be overshadowed during the summer by the other flower-loving Fly species.
