Reboot Charvanek (Romulan Commander)
Fandom: Star Trek (reboot) Timeline: AOS (2.0) Series: Reboot fancasting
Hannah John-Kamen as the Romulan Commander from TOS "The Enterprise Incident".
———————————————————————————————
It never occurred to me to find a fancasting for an AOS version of the Romulan Commander. But... the first time I saw this specific Killjoy's attire, I immediately thought about Joanne Linville's character, especially because in another still, this actress/character is drinking and it reminded me the scene when the Commander drinks with Spock. Since then, I was sold.
In canon she doesn't have a name. Non-canon material give her few names, including Liviana Charvanek; I decided to add it to the character's official handle just to be more specific.
———————————————————————————————
After a dry spell that started in April, something actually seemed to change in the last ten days of May: not only I started something new, picking from my too-long to-do list, but actually managed to even finish it. Hurrah for me!
I'm toying with the idea of coming up with a The Enterprise Incident AOS remix so to make an edit for it (and, boy, Romulan-ize Pine's Kirk!), because that Hannah John-Kamen's pic just calls for this episode.
———————————————————————————————
Tec stuffs (aka Behind The Manip) The results are a bit different from what I planned back when I found and downloaded the pic. The idea was to change the costume to look closer to the original character. For the naked legs to replace the clothed ones, I tried few pics of models from catwalks but the results were... meh. The boots were to be replaced by a pair made of high-knee black leather ones. The search for a picture that would work gave me one (1) result, and didn't even work. So, in the end, I gave up and kept Killjoy's original attire. The actress face was to be modified to include the TNG-era Romulan ridges. Then it hit me that we did have canon Reboot Romulans, and - being this a reboot character - the 2009's version was the look to be used. I tried my best to keep the reboot Romulan makeup/prosthetics but I don't think I completely managed on the nose, compared to the Romulan woman used as reference. The tattoo (that non-canon material established as mourning signs) stayed for two reasons: first, I couldn't properly remove it from the reference's forehead and second, without it, the woman looked just a vampire from Buffy The Vampire Slayer cosplaying a Vulcan. Lol. All in all, though, I like what I see. Sorry for the "blurred" look: the original picture is very crispy, and I did my best to remove the noise.

The Weeping Monk’s attire- a summary
Okay so I may have just spent two days studiously researching medieval clothing and comparing it to images of the Weeping Monk (thanks to farfarawaysite and danielsharmanews.com for those great hd images!!), trying to figure what exactly he's wearing so I can accurately describe it in this very small scene in my Cursed wip in which Gawain has to take off some of his clothes in order to assess the man's injuries after he passed out from pain. #noregrets
I found out some interesting things (at least this history nerd found it interesting) so here it all is under the cut. (It’s more interesting than it sounds, bare with me. This got looooong.)
I apologize that this is not at all remotely whump related but I’ve been talking about him a lot on this blog and it’s related to the whump fic I’m writing so.... yeah.
Under a cut for the length
Note: I am by no means an expert so I apologize if anything is incorrect
First up is your base layer consisting of a linen undershirt, as seen in this on set photo of Daniel wearing the cloak and undershirt (photo courtesy of farfarawaysite.com), and historically linen underpants (called braies). This was typical “underwear” for the medieval period.
Tumblr media
You can also see that undershirt in this photo (from danielsharmanews.com) if you look inside his sleeves
Tumblr media
Next would the medieval equivalent to trousers, called hose, which would look something like this. The hose were attached to the braies with leather or cloth cords.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sexy am I right? But because this is a tv show, he’s actually wearing trousers as seen clearly in this shot (from danielsharmanews.com)
Tumblr media
And in the video where the weeping monk aka daniel sharman teaches us how to make a cup of coffee in medieval times
Tumblr media
And this collage of him kicking the crap out of arthur and gawain (photos from danielsharmanews.com)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then throw on a pair of boots over that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the arming doublet/gambeson/aketon
This part was kind of tricky. At first I thought he was just wearing a tunic but upon closer inspection I could tell he wasn’t. The sleeves we can see appear to be thicker than a typical tunic. So I did some research and found these three garments (the names of which are debated on as they seem to be used synonymously at times)
I believe Lancelot is wearing an arming doublet over his linen undershirt instead of the gambeson or aketon.
What are those things you may be asking? Good question! Let me explain.
A gambeson was a thickly padded garment meant to be worn as standalone armor. It was made of either linen or wool and made with a quilting sewing technique so that fabric could be added in it to make it padded, usually 10-20 layers thick.
Meanwhile, an aketon was a thinner padded garment than the gambeson, about 5 layers thick, and was made to be worn under maille as padding against blunt trauma. An aketon might have also been worn under a gambeson and these two names are sometimes used interchangeably.
They look like this:
Tumblr media
Since what Lancelot is wearing clearly isn’t that thick, I am under the impression that he is wearing an arming doublet which was much more popular in the 15th century while the gambeson and aketon were earlier.
Arming doublets were typically thinner and worn underneath plated armor. Arming doublets were not quilted like the gambeson or aketon and looked more like civillian tunics or jackets. Maille could be attached to most doublets or you could wear plate armor over it. It was also shorter than the gambeson or aketon. They weren’t too different from typical civillian tunics just made a bit thicker. That also meant that they didn’t provide too much protection without the plates attacked. Still, it was something.
An example of an arming doublet:
Tumblr media
You can see Lancelot’s doublet better in this photo (from farfarawaysite.com). You can see the color difference and the thickness of the sleeves here.
Tumblr media
And I’m posting this photo again because you can really see the thickness of the doublet sleeves in it
Tumblr media
And with this one you can see the shoulder seams better (photo from danielsharmanews.com)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For comparison’s sake, Gawain wears an aketon, the type of quilted padding that goes on under your plate armor, with removable sleeves. You can see the thick padding, quilted sewing technique, and the difference in shape versus what Lancelot is wearing.
Tumblr media
(photo from farfarawaysite.com)
Next up, Lancelot has on a surcoat (also spelled surcotte or surcote). A surcoat is a long sleeveless outer garment that goes over your head and reaches just below your knees. It also has slits in the bottom front and back so the wearer can move and ride easily. It is typically worn over your plate armor and depicts your coat of arms but it was also worn as civilian clothing.
Example of a surcoat:
Tumblr media
Lancelot is clearly seen to be wearing a surcoat over his arming doublet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
And if you look close enough, you can see that there is a cross on his surcoat
Tumblr media
And here’s a shot of the ties on the side:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, to finish up his ensemble, The Weeping Monk dons his signature cloak and straps on his swords (One long Paladin sword and a shorter dagger).
Tumblr media
In summary, The Weeping Monk wears:
Linen undershirt and pants (called braies)
Hose/trousers
Boots
Arming doublet
Surcoat
Cloak
Swords
So the feels I got from all of this is that the surcoat and the arming clothing were most commonly worn not by your average dude and definitely not by monks. They were worn by.....
*drum roll*.....
KNIGHTS!
That's right! Knights are the ones who wore a surcoat over their armor and a gambeson/aketon/arming doublet went under your chainmail or plate armor. Most recognizably the knights during the crusades wore bright white surcoats with big red crosses in them on top of their plate armor. They are the ones who made them popular and afterwards knights began to wear them and had their device emblazoned on the front so people would be able to identify them. That's what led to the medieval coat of arms btw.
So the weeping monk is out here wearing garments that knights typically wore, with a cross emblazoned on the front so people could id him as the weeping monk as if the hood and eyes wouldn't already do that, instead of typcial monks robes. He’s wearing an outfit that
But if that's not foreshadowing I don't know what is.
THE WEEPING MONK IS WEARING THE TYPE OF GARMENTS THAT A KNIGHT WOULD WEAR AND I’VE GOT FEELS OVER IT!!!
It makes sense that he would wear something that offered a bit of protection since he's a master swordsman and needs to be able to move efficiently and be protected but come one. Knight’s garments. Lancelot. In knight’s garments.
And then I got to thinking about how he’s wearing a doublet but is not wearing any maille or armor which makes the doublet pretty ineffective and I got to wondering why. Like Father Carden gave him the doublet but nothing else because “If your enemy is able to land a blow then you deserve the pain from it” or something and then I got sad.
And thus concludes my extremely long and unnecessary ramble on clothing.

Memories from the betrothal
Fandom: Star Trek (reboot) Timeline: AOS (2.0) Series: Reboot fancasting (Kristin Kreuk as AOS!T'Pring) More: Uhura, T'Pring, Uhura ships (Chauhura, Sphura)
Two captured moments of T'Pring and Nyota Uhura's betrothal ceremony.
In a future post Beyond, where Spock accepts the ineluctable truth of being subject to James Kirk's gravitational pull and stops resisting, Uhura discovers that she really is meant to marry into Vulcan, just on the opposite site of the biological spectrum she planned.
Jim, Scotty, Chekov and cadet ensign Jaylah are somewhere trying to drink each other under the table. Spock is very embarrassed by his mate and is probably closed in some bathroom asking to his own reflection why again he decided to get himself lured by the captain's tempting mind after he and Nyota parted ways - and yes, perhaps why he let Nyota go in the first place.
———————————————————————————————
Something thrown together for @uhuramonth.
The girl smiling at the arrival of the couple in the first manip is Cisley Saldana, Zoe's sister: I wanted to manip Zoe's mother as Uhura's mother on that woman raising the glass, but Asalia Nazaro has a very different body structure, and it felt disrespectful to place her head on a "fitting" body, when she's plus size. So I decided to include Zoe's sister and turn her into Uhura's sister.
In this house, Gaila is alive and eventually returns to the Enterprise (as hinted in the comic series), and Darwin and Carol (and 0178) weren't cancelled in the rush to erase all Into Darkness existence for Beyond (in this house we love Into Darkness, but it's has become a very controversial statement to make). I'm ready to fight on this. (ง'̀-'́)ง
Killjoys is basically a go-to for Star Trek manips. Seriously, take a look at the gallery at Far Far Away. When I've seen pics from this specific scene my mind went to T'Pring and/or Vulcans, but I didn't know how to use them. Actually, the purple/blue dress would be perfect for Amanda (she has a hairstyle that I'm sure Amanda, either TOS or Discovery, had) but, alas.
———————————————————————————————
Tec stuffs (aka Behind The Manip) Foreword, at first it was just one manip, the second. It was a challenge but nothing was particularly harder. It did take me a good hour to hunt down Zoe and Kristin pics (and eventually I found that I had a better Zoe saved on and old Stock folder, duh!), especially Kristin was hard to find from that specific view/side: actresses tend to take pics either front, turning back, or side-view with head slightly turned to the camera. The idea to turn the other characters into Star Trek characters came a day later, when I was actually starting with the manip (day before I researched pics and did a unrefined attempt to see if they fit). I'm actually pleased for how Cho looks - the perfect pic happened in the search first rows! - and Aisha Hinds/Darwin looks so hot. The idea to make another piece - the first posted - came right one day before the date to post. I love how Uhura turned, very regal - it took me a while, and only a stock photo with all the logo plastered on it, but I found the perfect Zoe both for angle and facial look. I also love how T'Pring turned out, and I even managed to replicate TOS!T'Pring's eye shadow.

Firelight, pt 5

Part 4
Part 3
Part 2
Part 1
In the morning, you wake to a heaviness in the bed beside you. Geralt sleeps, his chest rising and falling, and you curl into him. He stirs briefly, turning to drape an arm over you, pulling you closer. You relax into the embrace. He smells of lavender from the bath, and just the whisper of polished leather. You breathe him in, trying to commit the scent of his skin, the play of his muscle under your hands, to your memory, and knowing you’ll fail. If only you had more time. He murmurs in his sleep, nuzzling into your hair. He's warm and solid and broad, and you smooth your hands over him greedily, delighting in the scrape of his coarse body hair against your palms, the press of his half-hard cock against your thigh. He's lazily aroused, content to hold you, and you're content to revel in his embrace.
Time passes. You’re not sure how much. When you wake again, it’s to a pounding on the door and your father’s voice.
“Witcher! It’s time!”
Geralt sits up, glancing at the door. His eyes are sharp, all traces of slumber gone in an instant. “Get dressed,” he tells you, gently.
Before you can leave the bed, he pulls you close against the solid wall of his warm chest, kisses you deeply. His taste is addictive and you spear your hands into his hair, knowing you’ll probably never see him again after this morning. You dress quickly, opening the door to your father’s expectant face as Geralt tugs on his armour.
Your father’s wary gaze darts from you to Geralt, and then to the rumpled bedsheets. “Everything was… as expected, Witcher?”
Geralt nods, not looking at you. You’re glad. If he did, you know his gaze might reveal the tenderness you shared, and you want to wrap that up like a secret, clutch it close to your chest and remember it later, in private. If you keep it out of the light, you think hopelessly, maybe it will never fade.
“Good, good. And the selkie?”
“On my way.” Geralt finally turns to you, giving you a sharp nod. His gaze holds yours for a second, and you meet his eyes, struggling to say everything in your heart without words.  You know, just from what you see in his amber-ringed eyes, that Witchers don’t feel is pure horseshit.
He passes your father in the doorway and then you heard the thud of his boots down the stairs of the inn. Your father enters the room, braces his hands on your shoulders.
“You did well. You have ensured that our village will be safe.” You nod dumbly, and your father’s face contracts with concern. “He didn’t hurt you?”
“No.” Not at all. Unless you counted the fact that he’d healed your heart and then cracked it wide open a few scant hours later.
You’re helping some of the other girls prepared potatoes and turnips for a stew later in the inn’s large kitchen when he returns. The door bangs open. You smell him before you see him - not the lavender and polished leather combination from earlier, but blood and gore. It hangs off him as he crosses to the centre of the inn’s tavern room, the selkie’s head in one bloody, gloved hand. Its sightless eyes stared endlessly, the irises green like seawater. Tendrils of hair, black as seaweed, hang around its lifeless face.
You bobble the turnip you’re holding and catch it just in time.
Your father takes the head from Geralt and cheers his name. The other patrons join in, and you feel a moment’s giddy relief. Your village will be safe. Your brother will be safe. The only thing not safe is your heart, but it is far too late to recoup that. You’d give it up again to save the people of your hometown. Except….
Geralt turns as if you’ve called his name. Your fingers fly to your lips but you know you haven’t spoken. Your gazes meet and hold for a second that makes the backs of your eyes burn. Then he nods at your father as if to say, debt paid, and stalks out of the tavern. And you go back to peeling turnips, saying nothing as the fledgling flame of hope in your chest fizzles out to nothing.
******
Your father stays at the tavern late, celebrating the death of the selkie. Almost everyone stays, drinking and cheering and singing. They deserve it, you think. Your father dances with your brother, delighted that his son won’t be taken from him.
You’re happy too, but the sadness still chases your heart. You’re almost blind with grief by the time you reach your cottage of the edge of the village. You reach for the door handle when the soft nicker of a horse reaches your ears. You turn. Oh horseback, Geralt’s silhouette is kissed by moonlight. You stop in your tracks, your mouth open on a silent question.
“I thought you’d gone,” you finally say, the words sticking in your throat.
He gazes down at you, a half-smile playing on his lips. “Tried.”
“What happened?” He’s here. That should tell you all you need to know, but your heart wants to hear him say it.
“I left something important behind.” And he extends a gloved hand to you.
