It's strange to me that people get so upset about stories, especially for kids, in which a parent or familial figure who mistreats the main character ends up mending their ways and improving themselves and their relationship with the main character.
There are plenty of examples of ones that are more like "your parent is doing their best! Be more understanding that their life has been hard!", but that's not the kind I'm talking about. I specifically mean stories like Encanto and Turning Red where the familial figure realizes the harm they've done and improves their behavior.
I understand that's not usually how it goes in real life and I understand the importance of the message that "you can't keep holding out for people who won't change" but it's seemed to me, at least in the more recent examples I'm thinking of, the message has never been one to the child seeing themselves in the main character, saying "hold out hope they'll change", but to the parent of that child, watching alongside them, saying "you are the one who has to change. It's not up to them to mend the relationship. If your child sees themselves in this, consider the role you play within the same story, and how it can end happily like this one, or tragically".
The message to the child never seems to be "you have to fix the relationship", it's always seemed to encourage them to not accept it. To not swallow down the pain of it and pass it on to the next generation. To confront it. But not to fix it. That always has to come from the other party.
Stories aren't meant to show things necessarily how they are in real life. They're meant to show how things should be. To teach us something. And, for me, these stories are about realizing that you have to be the one who breaks that chain, not your child. Is it realistic to imagine that message will be learned by the people who need to right now? Maybe not. But fantasy exists in many forms, including wish fulfillment. And those children seeing themselves in Mirabel or Mei Lin today may one day find themselves growing into Abuela or Mei Lin's mother and remember the lesson they learned when they were the child who needed an apology.

The reality of leaving a toxic family and why I’ll always sympathize with Bruno’s decision.
Just finished my third rewatch of Encanto (mostly because I hadn’t watched it with Bulgarian dub but anyway), and it reminded me once again why I relate to Bruno’s character so much.
Because I have very real, personal experience with distancing myself from a dysfunctional family and a toxic parent in particular, so his situation hits a little too close to home.
So, here’s a few thoughts on Bruno’s situation and why it actually mirrors plenty of real people’s experience (including mine).
Let’s get one thing out first: the movie itself does not really frame his decision as leaving a toxic family situation, but rather as a kind of sacrifice he had to do to protect Mirabel from the prophecy – but that’s a very surface reading of it. In reality, no child should need any “protection” from their literal family and there’s something very wrong with that family if that’s the case. The fact Bruno felt he couldn’t trust his own mother with the prophecy, the fact he was certain everyone will assume the worst of it and feared the consequences it could have for Mirabel, is a massive red flag that he was in some kind of toxic situation.
And no, I don’t mean that he was openly mistreated by anyone – let me elaborate.
Love, toxicity and more – are you “abused enough” to justify making such an extreme decision?
In general, there is still a lot of stigma about leaving your family – the intensity of that stigma greatly varies by culture, of course. But there’s a certain idea of what’s an acceptable situation that requires cutting contact, usually when we talk about pretty extreme cases of abuse (and even then some people can be unsympathetic about it).
When we talk about a purely dysfunctional family, rather than a flat out abusive one, things get a lot more complicated. You could very well feel you don’t have it “bad enough”. You might convince yourself that you are being too sensitive for being hurt, that you are being selfish for wanting to leave. They are your family and they love you after all. Right?
Unfortunately, love and toxic behavior are not something mutually exclusive. That’s something people in general still struggle to understand and it’s a very harmful misconception. It’s very common excuse people make for their behavior, especially in case of familial relationships, that they can’t possibly be toxic to someone if they love them. It’s also something that prevents people from recognizing that they are in a toxic situation.
In Bruno’s case, even though we don’t have a full detailed context and backstory about his life before leaving, I tend to assume he wasn’t viciously abused by his mother or flat out mistreated by anyone else. See, I’m not one of those people who demonize Alma or the Madrigal family in general – of course they aren’t some kind of monsters and they love each other despite everything, I’m sure they actually loved Bruno. But as I said, love can coexist with toxicity.
Ultimately, my point is - the fact Bruno was loved and not flat out abused by his family also doesn’t mean the situation can’t be toxic and harmful to his mental health. There are very serious red flags (both within the actual movie canon and additional information from the creators) that his situation was indeed bad. It’s clear he had already been isolating himself from the family for a while, that things were like that for years and nothing ever improved. This kind of environment is definitely unhealthy enough to cause someone to walk away.
Leaving isn’t easy and it isn’t pretty – people are going to be hurt
Now, let’s address one common argument about why what Bruno did was wrong – he left suddenly without any explanation, without as much as a note, and that was a seriously hurtful thing to do, especially for his sisters.
I don’t disagree with this sentiment at all. Of course, the way he handled things was far from ideal and the family is also allowed to be hurt by it. And still, I don’t exactly condemn him for it. What he did may not be the "right" way to handle things, but it’s very realistic.
Leaving a dysfunctional family isn’t some kind of a wholesome affair where they pat you on the back and throw you a farewell party. A lot of people will prefer to cut off contact over time without properly talking things out, usually because they fear the backlash, don’t want to see the hurt reactions, and don’t want to hear the harsh words that would inevitably be exchanged. Having a direct confrontation with a toxic family about cutting ties with them can become very rough and even escalate a toxic situation into something far worse.
Going back to Encanto - curiously, we have an actual proof that things could have gotten very ugly if Bruno tried to confront Alma before leaving – you know that cut scene from the early development of the movie? The one called “Chores”, where we get to hear about the tense exchange Alma had with Bruno (named Oscar back then) before he left and what they said to each other? Sure, this exchange is very far from canon, but it does show what could have potentially went down.
Furthermore – does the hurt you cause by leaving erase the hurt caused to you?
Continuing from my last point. The family was undoubtedly hurt by Bruno’s decision to leave. That would still have been the case even if he handled things better.
Of course, when there’s still love present in the family, despite the toxicity, the family is not going to want you gone and would be naturally hurt by such a decision.
That’s exactly why it’s so difficult to make the decision - because you don’t want to hurt those people you actually still love. That’s why when you actually make the decision you might feel enormous guilt and shame about it. You might feel selfish, cruel and ungrateful. You might begin to question your own reality and your whole past experience. And you can definitely see that guilt in Bruno too, especially during his reunion with the family in the end – his nervous body language and rush to apologize (without expecting the same in return) speaks volumes and is frankly a little sad to watch.
The family's hurt is valid and justified, I'm not denying it - that also doesn't mean Bruno was somehow the bad guy who selfishly and heartlessly abandoned them. And it certainly doean't mean the hurt he caused them erases his own hurt and trauma. While such extreme criticism of his actions is thankfully uncommon, I do see some discussions that go into such direction and it rubs me the wrong way, because it feeds into the stigma about walking away from your family and it's just insensitive and potentially hurtful to real people's experience and trauma.
So, in conclusion, here’s the very harsh truth. Sometimes you need to prioritize yourself and your own well-being. Life is not a Disney movie after all and sometimes toxic relationships can’t be properly repaired, not even with your own parents. And the fact you are going to hurt someone by leaving does not mean the hurt they caused you (intentionally or not) no longer matters.

Although you are in English server, you seen some masquerade events posts. Any idea of the Disney princesses joining in the event? Obviously Esmeralda would join but I figure those who will join will be magicless like Anna, Mirabel, Alice, and Meg for Rollo to be friendly to them.
I mean most of them are magicless, it's really only Elsa and Rapunzel who has powers.
Obviously yeah, Esmerelda would be the main girl here. If there has to be a secondary protagonist to go along my choices are either, Aroura, Mirabel, or Anna and Elsa. Considering the only reason Yuu is going is to watch Grim who annoyed Crowley, they aren't even initially selected, lets keep it to one other person going for the sake of keeping the list down. Or two people in the case of the Frozen sisters.
Some spoilers down below
Aroura I say because this is a very Malleus centered event, and Aroura is essentially his Yuu. So her going along with him to the masquerade makes sense. Especially if we want to be shippy about it. Like imagine Malleus and Aroura during the musical number at the end. That's really it though.
Mirabel because she is magicless, literally its the big plot point of her movie. And if we want to go with the theme of the fire like flowers violently burning away magic vs the gentle flame of Mirabels family candle that gives them their gifts and protects them. Two very opposing sides sort of deal. Especially if Mirabel talks to Rollo at the festival and talks about her family and Rollo throws back into her face later that her family was given a miracle but let the magic "ruin" them and mistreat her. Only for Mirabel to argue back even if that is the case, she has never resented the existence of magic and loves it despite not having a gift.
Elsa and Anna though I think thematically wise, can mirror Rollo a lot since his motive is because magic killed his brother and he hates himself for having magic. Elsa is very much seeing herself in Rollo if she went down a darker path. Maybe at some point she tells the others after learning about Rollos brother, as much as she hates to admit it, she can understand, because she almost killed Anna when they were little. That up until very recently Elsa had spent her whole life in fear and wishing she never had powers. Meanwhile Anna, as the younger sibling that was hurt by magic, tells Rollo pretty much the same thing from her perspective. That she has never hated Elsa or resented that she had powers, that his brother would not want this. Maybe Rollo can be a enraged that them, "Because how dare you compare our situation! My brother is dead, and your sister isn't. Don't pretend you understand." Then we have a whole Fire vs Ice boss battle, because of course we do.

With Protective!Alma do you think that fierceness could have started with being helpless watching Pedro die? Instead of becoming this stoic leader she’s still a leader but also slightly feral. I can picture her literally threatening to fight ever person who tried to date her kids.
If all that is true how would Agustin and Felix manage to get to some level of chill with her.
Honestly? Yeah! I think she would have been willing to put her dukes up even early on. She wouldn't able to take any of her kids leaving early, even her son-in-laws. But I guess maybe being a more stoic leader worked out and she didn't have a reason to throw hands and she putting fighting aside, especially as she got older and had grandchildren.
But after Mirabel's ceremony, she realized just how dependent and entitled the village was. I mean, she held off on telling the village that Mirabel indeed did have a door, she didn't deem it something the whole village should know, and they ended up mistreating her, treating her as if she wasn't a Madrigal. Even with no gift, Mirabel still helped in a lot of ways, ways very similar to Alma.
As for Felox and Agustin, she did like. Say that she was fully willing to brawl with them should either of them break her daughters hearts.
Agustin was like OK cool, just don't beat me up please. He's skilled with an axe, but he's not gonna go after the love of his life's mother with one, and his hand-to-hand combat isn't bad, just not comparable to Alma. Felix was like I'll never break her heart, but hey, if you wanna fight, I'll do it. He knows he'd probably lose to Alma, seeing that she's never lost a fight (that and he and Agustin have seen her beat someone up before, when they were kids).

I adore bruno so much but it really annoys me when people act like he’s the only madrigal with trauma. like the amount of times I see people saying “she was mistreated maybe but Bruno had it worse” how do y’all miss the entire point of the movie!? like the point is all of them were suffering and not to compare that but to understand each had their own problems. It’s especially annoying when I constantly see that comment in reference to mirabel (who is literally a child) like it feels weird people are so hung up on saying a child’s trauma is less valid because of another character. When the movie literally parallels their arcs!??

Disney Modern Au prompt:
Based on the Princess Diana interview in 1995, Mirabel and Bruno was interviewed by Mr. Kermit Frog on live television about their past relationship with their ex-family, including child abuse/neglect, manipulative and suffered mistreatment from them. Even Julieta and Augustine, Antoino, Dolores, Camilo and Luisa also spoke out against their family. Julieta felt like she’s being controlled by her own mother by obeying her. Antoino spoke how Mirabel was forced to be his nanny/babysitter since he was a baby and Luisa talked about how overwhelmed she was when she had to do some heavy chores around the house after work. Camilo also exposed his mom and grandma when they asked him to not make jokes about them which was the result of his comedy show being canceled due to low audiences rate but Mirabel did reach out if he would like to be a model of her clothing line in which he accepted.
After the interview, it became number 1 trendy on Twitter and a national topic around the world. To add even more insult, Bruno even published a book exposing his ex-family toxic household environment. The Madrigal (but mostly Alma, Pepa, and Isabela) were immediately pariahs in town and the people stopped talking to them. Pepa and Isabela were fired from their job by their boss after the interview was aired and nobody wants a bully to work for them. Alma, Pepa and Isabela did their own interview and act like they are “deeply sorry” for what they caused and admit of the abuse and mistreatment and wish they could “rekindle” their relationship and hope they forgive them but their interview ends up in a disaster. On the day their interview airs, Mirabel and Bruno (along with Augustine and Juileta, Antonio, Luisa, Dolores, and Camilo) attend the formal celebration to celebrate Mirabel successful business with the two wearing gorgeous black attire which the media dub the uncle and niece’s outfit as “The Revenge looks”.
Hmm, interesting!
Tho I think it would only be Bruno who would expose his mother's and sister's behavior and how they treated him and Mirabel, or at least drag them to court from across the country if they decided to contact him or Mira.
Mira would stand up to them someday, just not on TV.
as for the others:
Isabela would stay with the family, especially for her Abuela and favorite Tía. Tho that didn't mean that Isa would never change her crappy behavior and redeem herself😄 (thank you, Anastasia!).
Luisa would probably move out of Bogotá, considering taking a small vacation to Greece, maybe even moving there. She always wanted to see the beauty of that country. And it wasn't like Luisa wouldn't have contact with Mirabel and Antonio. She could always talk to them!
Julieta would probably stay as well, only because her mother, her sister and her family, and oldest daughter were still in Bogotá with her. Yes, her husband was working in the US, and she deeply missed her brother and youngest daughter, but Julieta hated seeing the family split apart...
Dolores would definitely stay with the family, especially with her parents, older prima and younger brother. She was close to them, and didn't want her and Mariano's children deprived of grandparents and their Tío. Besides, she had a great job and amazing friends. She didn't want to give that up.
Camilo would also stay. He loved his family, and didn't want to leave them, especially his mamá and papá. Though Camilo did miss Antonio and Mirabel...
Antonio however, would leave. He'd head to Cali with Cecilia, even considering moving to another country in Latin-America after graduating college. After everything he remembered, and after Mirabel told him about how his Mamá and Abuela forced her to be his nanny since she was 10, Antonio wanted to move away from his parents, wanting nothing to do with them. He needed to be away from the family and them constantly pressuring him anyways, a breath of fresh air.

So black moth Mirabel being sickly partly because inbred and issues coming from that but just as much if not more being mistreated like maybe instead of the nursery she gets a different rome like a closet or maybe just stop using as a nursery and as her room Antonio gets a crib in parents room and a bed in Camilo's room so he doesn't have to be with Mirabel. Now the room Mirabel is in not fit for human let alone a child to live there its poorly maintained like somewhat falling apart there for reasons like holes that are barley covered up so in winter it's cold and if it's raining it gets wet and because of the familys feeling towards her this place is the only one she feels safe in so stays there and often gets sick on account of the elements and isn't really cared for when she is and gets an idea that it wouldn't matter if she lived or died. Also she eats less because they don't want her at meals because they would rather forget she exists so she either has food made separately for her by Julieta or gets what's left also no one wants to be around her to teach her so she is self taught in cooking and still pretty bad at it. When Isa starts to get close and realizes how bad she has it she starts to do things to fix it when Mirabel gets sick again she moves Mirabel out of her room to Isa's both to get her out of that place but also to take care of her she makes her food she may not be Julieta magic healing chef but she has been taught to be the prefect wife for her life so she can definitely cook and spends time with Mirabel taking care of her and just treating her with compassion. After some resistance from Mirabel because she can't stay in another room especially Isa's room since she is unpure and ruins everything she touches or is around she eventually gets comfortable feeling cared for feed well and apart of her wishes to stay sick so she can still be cared for and stay in Isa's room. Fortunately for Mirabel Isa doesn't plan to let her ever go back to her old room ever again.
Ayy yes Isa bringing her somewhere that's soft and clean and dry, personally giving her a bath, lending her some of her soft cotton nightclothes from when she was her age and letting her sleep in her bed (usually in her arms uwu). It's so comfy and nice, and part of her feels like she doesn't deserve it, like she's invading her sister's room and making her work, but in reality, Isabela is so so happy to have her there. Her room is always super lonely and kinda sad, despite all the color, and having company there is so nice! She wishes Mirabel could stay there forever, with her. Eventually, she will have it her way! No more uncomfortable little closet, from then on, Mirabel shall sleep every night among silk sheets :)

So I honestly wanted to share my thoughts on one opinion the Encanto fandom seems to have that I personally disagree with. It’s sort of a popular thing most of the fandom has said. Most of the time it’s just an over exaggerated joke that I don’t mind, but others are genuinely serious, and while I can SEE where they’re coming from, I wanted to share why I disagree.
So it has to do with Mirabel and the family. If you’ve been in the fandom long, you’ll know that a lot of people like to joke about how the family pushes her to the side. How she sleeps in the nursery, how she wasn’t included in the family picture, and how she feels out shunned and ostracized. Again, some people will joke, but I’ve seen so many people go “Fuck the family, they treated her horribly, Mirabel should have been a villain”- all that jazz, and I just......disagree.
The thing about Encanto is it’s not necessarily the FAMILY that treats Mirabel herself horribly and excludes her, it’s ALMA. Alma is the main problem to everything going on with the family in the movie, and the movie KNOWS this. It’s about how Alma put pressure on every single family member, making them feel like all they were are their gifts and that they have to be perfect and earn the miracle they were given. Since Mirabel didn’t HAVE a gift, that’s what made Alma constantly push Mirabel to the side, and tell her to let the family shine and not get in the way. While she saw everyone as just their gifts, she saw Mirabel as someone who wasn’t necessarily part of the family, and again, the film KNOWS this. I’m not going to act like the rest of the family was perfect, but Alma is the center. She’s the leader, the person who runs everything, the person who PAINTS the Madrigals as a perfect family who will always come to aid. Because of that, that’s what CAUSED Mirabel to feel ostracized from the family. Alma made her believe that since she had no gift, she had no purpose, she didn’t contribute anything. While Mirabel herself ACCEPTED she didn’t have a gift during the events of the movie, she wanted to have a moment to shine in her OWN way, to prove that she belonged and that she could do something of worthy. I bring all of this up for a reason, and I first want to say that I’m NOT trying to villainize Alma, I know she’s not the villain, I just say all of this because it was HER who was excluding and mistreating Mirabel from the family, not the family themselves.
But if you disagree with me, let me deep dive more. Mirabel’s parents love her very much. They think she has nothing to prove, and that she’s perfect the way she is, especially her mother, and while she may not fully understand Mirabel from time to time, she’s still there to help. Then you have her sisters. Luisa is a big softie, she loves Mirabel and wants to protect her as well as the rest of the family. You can tell her and Mirabel are very close. Then there’s Isabela, who gets on Mirabel’s nerves. The two have a complex relationship, as Isabela sees Mirabel as someone who constantly gets in the way of what she’s trying to do. Isabela was mean yes, but even SHE doesn’t exclude her from the family. Then you have Antonio, who loves Mirabel and is one of the closest to her. He spent 5 years in the nursery with her, and has grown to love her for who she is. As for the rest of Pepa’s side of the family, they weren’t given enough time to interact with Mirabel so we don’t know the general dynamics, and while Pepa and/or Félix was confused or razzled by her actions from time to time, that doesn’t mean they don’t care about her.
Now listen, I’m not going to act like the family was perfect BY FAR. They could have treated Mirabel better, but some people act like they purposely hated her or didn’t like her because she didn’t have a gift and that’s not true. The family accepted that she didn’t have a gift, it’s not like Mirabel was depressed that she was in the nursery, or didn’t have a door, or even a GIFT. It was confirmed that she has accepted she didn’t have one, but she just wanted to shine like her family did. While I can totally understand some people thinking that the family mistreated Mirabel, it just pisses me off that some people portray them as characters who wanted to push Mirabel out of the way. 💀

A time ago when everyone hyped for Encanto I remember seeing a post that said that Mirabel was a better character than Midoriya and that if she were in Midoriya's place she would have ended up hugging Bakugou. I feel that there is a lot to say about this, first of all I remember how the English fandom of Encanto criticized that the issue of Grandma's mistreatment was not addressed and that it was only solved with a hug (USA) and on their part I remember that fandom Latino responded that they should stop projecting its own family culture in what would be the dynamics of a Latina family. The truth is that as a latina I can say that it's true that culturally we have the family as a very important value, our relationships between parents and children are usually very close and the quarrels of grandchildren and grandparents are usually something beautiful because practically grandchildren are something to consent for grandmothers. What I want to get at is that our family relationships are close and we consider them very important to the point of justifying "you have to help because it's family". However, this type of mentality should change when it comes to factors such as neglect and mistreatment by someone towards another and that is precisely what the grandmother did with Bruno and Maribel, even considering the trauma, she took away one of her children by point of kicking him out of the family because his gift was inconvenient and she alienated Maribel to the point of alienating her from family events, all this is wrong and it's okay if people hold a grudge or deserve reparation. A better movie about family dynamics, effects and generational trauma is Turning red, here Mei confronts her mother, her mistakes aren't swept under the rug and especially because we understand her mother's attitude, there is a sincere apology and the mother shows progress in improving her relationship with her daughter.
What I'm trying to get at with this is that there is no such thing as giving Bakugou a hug or Midoriya being guilty of their relationship because he wasn't able to understand him, the victim isn't the one who should help his abuser to improve, the victim isn't the one who must sympathize with the abuser to the point of justifying the abuse suffered. Midoriya isn't a better or worse character because his relationship with Bakugou is dysfunctional, in his own way even since he entered the UA he has tried to improve his relationship with Bakugou, but it's Bakugou who has problems with him, not vice versa. But above all the traumas and problems of one aren't a free pass to mistreat others, people aren't stress relievers and Bakugou was never justified in his actions just because he had an inferiority complex, he crossed the limit at the time who started harassing and hurting Midoriya and continue to do so even in the AU and in his redemption arc he still does and is disguised as humor. I think what I'm trying to get that Midoriya doesn't owe Bakugou anything, he doesn't owe his forgiveness, he doesn't owe gratitude for being treated as a human being and that Bakugou considers him a friend isn't a prize, Bakugou was his abuser , it isn't about understanding and embracing your abuser because he suffers, the victims deserve more than this or that the responsibility for the abuse received is attributed to them.
I agree with all of this. Can’t add anything else. And as a Latino I also get what you mean when you talk about the culture.

this is dumb, but i'm finally starting an actual draft of one of my books. i've had it in my head and i've had it outlined but i've never actually Started it.
anyway,,, what's your opinion of books which switch POVs between the main characters? i think it can be well done... but in some books i've read, i've hated it. especially when there's like one person's who is annoying? that you want to skip. :') however, this would be just between the two main characters.
also,,, is present tense ok to write in? i never use past tense and it's... fucking me up.

THEY TREATED THAT POOR GIRL LIKE DIRT. She had flashbacks walking Antonio to the door. And then we find a dude had been living in the walls for 10-15 YEARS?! Because of his family's abuse and finger pointing?!
Then it's all okay because grammy cried at the river. Like suddenly that fixed everything? Maybe I'm just a petty bitch, but them motherfuckers would never see me again! Like damn. Lol

They realize being in love with you (Headcanon)
Classification: Fluff
Pairing: Dolores, Isabela, Luisa, Julieta and Pepa
Warnings: None, apart from reference to injuries
Word count: +1300
Dolores
Tumblr media
- She always listened to you, small noises and few words, you were the quietest person in the village, even quieter than Bruno living in the walls, and the only one she wants and expects to hear, who helps her sleep better or keeps her company in the dead of night while you read in a few whispers before bed;
- But you are a faceless voice, she cannot identify where you are coming from and who you are, you are not someone who has ever asked Madrigals for help or interacts with many people, she could never identify you or track you in the small crowd of residents, which intrigued and interested her the most;
- Then Camilo's 15th birthday party arrived and just like everyone else in the village you were invited, Dolores was curious because she had never seen you before and when you spoke for the first time, loud and clear, she choked and made a cute little noise that got your attention;
- She finally found the mysterious girl with the voice that soothes her days and nights. Then she realized that the strange feeling in the pit of her stomach and the anxiety to hear your voice was more than just curiosity.

- You've known each other since you were kids, but you never were exactly close, she always got angry and you ended up out of the games for not playing the way she wanted, rebellious as you are you took revenge on her, starting a war;
- Your cousin, the sweet and perfect Mariano, is the one who forced you two back together, you are his only family besides his mother and the boy wants you and the future wife to get along as a family should be;
- You try to be cordial most of the time but it's hard to maintain your posture when Isabela is testing all your limits and pushing buttons constantly, despite everything you not even managed to see her mistreating the lovely Mirabel, not containing yourself another argument started, one that even Abuela didn't want to get involved in;
- In the end you are too hoarse and angry to realize that Isabela's sash crumbled for a few seconds, seconds enough for her to realize that part of what had happened was pure jealousy of you and that she never felt that way about anyone, least of all Mariano, then she discovered she was in love with her fiancé's cousin and part of her perfect world crumbled into realization.
Luisa
Tumblr media
- You used to work in the bakery assisting the big parties of the Madrigal family and in a short time you became Julieta's personal helper, she simply adores you and treats you like one of the family, so you get to know and get closer to the big and famous family of Encanto;
- Especially Luisa, she is rarely at home because she spends the day helping everyone in the village, but the occasional stops for lunch or snacks become progressively longer as you get closer, you usually chat excitedly about something that happened in your respective routines or news that Dolores told about, doesn't seem like it but she loves gossip;
- In a short time you become best friends, in fact she considers you her only friend and shares everything, besides always wanting to help you and feels a little strange when you deny help or you are the one helping her, she is not used to being taken care of by someone (besides her mother's arepas and affection), she feels very strange being on the other side of the table and for not helping you, because you are the only person she really wants to help and longs for;
- And it was at another of the big family parties that she finally noticed, you climbed up the counter to get extra glasses from the kitchen cabinet when the casita decided to give a little help and pushed you into Luisa's arms who was helping, she quickly holds you in her lap like a bride. Her eyes met yours and the girl felt her own heart miss a beat as she struggles not to kiss you right there. Then she realized that she is in love with you.
Julieta
Tumblr media
- She first saw you in line for healing, immediately catching the eye of Alma's firstborn as you strolled among the sick showing off your funny twisted arm and bragging about the feat after falling out of a tree. She healed you quickly and had the impression that she would see more of you soon;
- And that's what happened, the following week you were in the sick bay line again, this time with a big cut on your forehead telling everyone how you fell trying to learn to ride a horse, Julieta listened to the story attentively and couldn't stop laughing at how excited you are even though your head is bleeding;
- Your visits became more and more frequent and there is always a different injury, accompanied by a funny story. Then suddenly you disappeared for a few days leaving her worried, even though this means that you have stopped hurting yourself and are fine, she felt selfish but wanted to see you again;
- A week later you reappeared, this time with no bruises or bleeding, just a little pale. Bringing with you a basket of fresh fruit, honey bread and a bottle of wine, a gift for the woman who saved your life so many times. You shamefully explained that you contracted an annoying cold and didn't want to pass it on to anyone, she could only think of how kind and empathetic you are, and silly too considering she could heal you right away and everyone else too despite your defense of not wanting to overwhelm her. Warming her heart in a different way and Julieta instinctively hugged you, in the comfort of your arms realized how much she wants to see you and be able to heal every bruise with kisses and caresses.
Pepa
Tumblr media
- Best childhood friends! Since was a child she helped in the plantations of the local farmers, including your family, and that's how you met and became one and the same. The funny part of the story is that she asked for help to cry and make rain, you just kicked her in the knee and then apologized a thousand times;
- As the years went by you became closer and closer and she felt more and more comfortable around you, to the point of showing the deepest emotions that she hides from the world, with you she can create the most beautiful rainbows and the most terrible storms knowing that you don't care. So when you entered adolescence became inseparable, attached at the hip, accompanying each other in daily chores, having dinner together with the Madrigal family and having sleepover parties almost every week, sometimes together with her siblings who adore you;
- Pepa has always been the most precocious of the group, she lost her milk teeth before everyone else, she has always been the tallest, she was the one who gave the first kiss and had the first boyfriend, when you didn't keep up with her the redhead felt strange but at the same time relieved, she is a jealous friend and drives away anyone who comes near you with just a look or a sky changing color;
- Days before your 18th birthday there is a sleepover in her room and you shyly ask Pepa to teach you how to kiss, she was reluctant and tense to imagine why you would want to learn such a thing, but you do it anyway and don't regret. During the kiss she realizes that it was your first and feels deeply proud, in the middle of the night, while you sleep peacefully next to her, she looks at the ceiling, reflecting and trying to understand the weird feeling in the pit of her stomach that says there is something different... she realizes that she has been deeply in love with you since forever.

A (small-ish) rant thingy for Isabela and Mirabel’s “fixed” relationship. And how Isabela (probably) came to treat Mirabel the way she did.
Encanto’s following isn’t as active as it was a few weeks ago, so hopefully this means I won’t get as many pitchforks lol.
Just as a quick note, I am happy that Isabela and Mirabel patched things up. I just felt that it was rushed and underdeveloped and was kinda not well justified.
Welp, here we go. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
First off, I know that this is Disney and Mirabel had to resolve the issue with Isabela because the magic depended on it, but dang, if I had Isabela as my sister I wouldn’t have forgiven her after one song.
Also, I know they were both antagonistic towards each other, but Isabela is an adult. Why is a 20 something year old having beef with a teenager 6-7 years younger than her? Isabela taking out her jealousy on Mirabel for not being under the same kind of pressure for perfection is really no excuse, especially when she sees how abuela treats Mirabel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She really thinks being ignored, looked down upon, and constantly being told to stay out of the way of more “talented” family members is somehow better than what she has, which is abuela’s love and adoration? I don’t believe it for a second.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What I do believe though, is that abuela’s treatment of Mirabel, i.e. condescending and always telling her she is in the way, always annoyed at everything she does for no reason at all, rubbed off on Isabela and she saw it as acceptable, maybe even a good thing, to further get abuela’s affection (think of all the teacher’s pet you know).
Tumblr media
So she mistreats and look down on her sister because she saw abuela do it and feels it’s normal, if you’re not gifted or helpful you’re a burden and will be treated as such. It’s like seeing a bully and her lackey. At the start of the movie, their interactions are full of just mean spirited behaviour. I mean you can see the parallels in the two scenes below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another example is when Isabela says, “if you weren’t always trying so hard, you wouldn’t be in the way”. Even though she knows Mirabel tries so hard because she is the only one without a gift. Like… is that not unnecessarily cruel to anyone else?? A grown adult acting that way to a child??
Tumblr media
She also tells Mirabel to apologise for something Mirabel wasn’t even responsible for (hello?? She was the one that turned Mariano’s nose into a “smashed papaya”, not Mirabel??). And just the overall smugness in her tone, despite the fact that Mirabel was doing what she did for the family’s sake really made it difficult for me to accept that Mirabel and her just became besties after they sang and ran about the roof tops for a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My final point as to why I did not like how buddy buddy they made the sisters so quickly after is that, at the end of the movie, abuela apologised to Mirabel for hurting her. However Isabela did not. Not on screen anyway. How difficult would it have been to say “sorry I was kinda a spoiled asshole and I should have been a better older sister to you?” Apparently too difficult.

I havnt seen this get talked about yet and thats kinda intriguing
But we all know abuela alma is an abuser right? At least to me she is.
Unintentinally, but that doesnt change much. She put a shit ton of pressure on her family, and it emotionally destoryed alot of them. Surface pressure was literally luisa having a mental breakdown
You can tell when she walked passed her family memebers when they where next to their doors in the scene where alma realizes what shes done.
Bruno is scared, Isabella fixs herself so she fit almas image, and luisa looks like shes in tears.
Not to mention antonio visibly doesnt wanna do his ceremony but when he sees alma look at him, he pretends hes happy. Even he cant express himself around her, and hes a literal child.
Its like they've been abused sense they where 5 because she never got over losing pedro, and imidietly having to raise 3 kids would be taxing on anyone. So when they got theyre gifts, she became alot more strict on everyone.
Pepa cant express her emotions on her own wedding day. in we don't talk about bruno, felix says "no clouds aloud in the sky" as if pepa was being forced to not be her normal anxious self because someone needs the day to be perfect.
Bruno literally didnt wanna see her after having the vision, because he knew shed flip or someone would blame him for everything. He was scared of her, and it showed. He stood up for Mirabel by the river cause he didnt want Mirabel to deal with the blam anymore. He probably saw how she was treated.
Dont get me started on Mirabel, this women LITERALLY made her feel worthless. She tells antonio "a gift, just as special as you" and her face drops, because she doesnt have a gift. So she thinks she isnt special. She was left out of the family photo. Alma told Mirabel to stay out of the way when preparing for antonios night. She yells at her several times in the movie. It makes sense why Mirabel lashed out at the end. She was tired of being blamed for nothing. Oh no. Isabella had fun, blame Mirabel because of a vision she didnt see all of. Oh no, Mirabel didnt get a gift, lets be mean to a five year old.
Isabella was forced to be perfect her whole life. Shes the oldest of the grand kids, she has higher expectations. She has to marry the perfect guy, always be graceful and can never be not perfect.
So many of them have had been mistreated by alma. She doesnt intend it. But her methods are faulty and you can tell.
Shes such a 3 dimensional charecter to me. You can see how she ended up where she did and how its gonna take a long time to get out of it.
The thing is though, the family was really quick to forgive alma. Especially Mirabel and anyone heavily affected by alma.
If i where mirabel, i wouldnt forgive her easily. Id acknowledge she actually didnt mean to hurt anyone but i wouldn't be all buddy buddy with her either.
I get you gotta wrap the movie up, but this seemed so strange to me. Like, years of mistreatment to just be forgiven in a week.
Maybe im over analyzing things who knows

For this Merry Encanto Eve. Here's my random Kinda Angsty/Sad Headcanon for the Madrigal fam!
-------
When Bruno was little and couldn't sleep due to his vision he used sneak out his room and fall asleep to Alma praying to the candle. When she found this out she would stretch out the prayers ling enough for Bruno to fall into deep sleep then carry him to his room. This stopped when he was 10. So when he first moved into the walls he would listen through the wall to her pray to fall asleep again 🥺
Bruno is the only sibling that really know what their Papa was like/sounded/looked due to his visions
Alma cant stand to hear Bruno talk sometimes because he sounds just like his Papa. She heard Bruno sing to Luisa once when she was toddler and Alma had to lock herself in her room for a little bit. 😔
Alma misses being able to climb and run around like she did in her youth, especially because she stop such 'childish' things when she became the town leader. She softly envies how easily Isabel and Mirabel do it.
Felix and Agustin are scared to bring their side of the family to encanto or take their children and wives out to see them. Partly because the expectation either side has, how the magic may be perceived or put in danger.
After Mirabel's gift ceremony going as it did. Agustin thought about taking her to meet his side of the family and live there to avoid being mistreated in Encanto. But then Bruno disappeared and Juliete and Pepa and Alma were so distraught so he never brought it up
Felix misses his orginal home and family a lot but his father really disapproved and disowned him when he married Pepa and moved away.
Pepa knows about Felix homesickness and family issues but he constantly shut down her trying to talk about them with him. She knows he does it for the sake of her gift and that really frustrates her.
When she had Antonio so much later in life, Pepa though she would die and wished Bruno was there to tell her eveuthing was going to be fine with a vision.
Julieta had issues growing attachment to Isabella at first due to how much she was parent-ified by Alma when she was a girl. Julieta had only about 5 years of a personality that was independent of her being a mother/caretaker figure and resented Isabella for taking that for a year or two.
Julieta never told Alma about how taxing her gift really is because she has a fear of letting her down/losing her trust by not being strong enough to heal and help others.
Even though she is very soft, sensitive and feminine. Luisa has a lot of insecurities about her perceived femininity. She knows it comes from the fact she is so big and muscular but she is a soft girl yall, she just want to be treated gently. 🥺
Lusia used to hide her small injuries like splinters or bruises or muscle strain alot because she though she was strong than those tiny hurts and that her family would scold her for wasting time taking care of them. Mirabel caught sight of a few and fretted around Luisa so much Alma sent her home. Luisa quickly stopped that and took care of her little injuries, relieved that her mama was happy to take care of them no matter what.
Isabella feel guilty that she left her sister by the wayside so much in her pursuit to be so perfect. She is a bit unsure of how but she really trying to repair them.
Isabella hates roses with a passion because that the first flower she grew and Alma pressured her to constantly practice with them.
Camilo does have a fear that his face is going to get stuck or that he will forget some tiny part of his default form and that he will gradual forget his orginal self and no one will notice
Camilo was bullied for a little bit by some kids parroting how their parents called him shifty or untrustworthy or a trickster spirt due to his gift.
Dolores used to get bullied by people blowing dog whistles at her
Dolores used the heartbeats or little physical sounds of her family as a comfort and fears the days she stops hearing them forever.
Mirabel has a lot of gifted tendencies and talents that her family ignored or brushed off as her coping.
Mirabel thought Casita hated her for a long time after the door disappeared and occasionally she has the urge to ask Casita why she didnt deserve a room.
------
That's it for now! I'll post my more fluffy and slice of life ones after this!

Okay, as much as I dislike the whole 'Mirabel was left out of the family photo and the family didn't notice it', yall gotta remember this:
Mirabel still loves her family, and they love her too.
We spend the first ten minutes of the movie with Mirabel singing about how great her family is, and how much she loves being a part of the Madrigals, and while she is of course very insecure about her lack of gift, she doesn't resent her family. Yes, she has her own issues- feeling left out, jealousy at Isabella - but she still loves the Madrigals very very much.
Did the rest of the family kind of overlooked her? Yes, they did, especially with the photo scene, but again, that doesn't change the fact that they, too, love Mirabel. Julietta took the time to comfort her when she was feeling down, and who's to say that the rest of the family didn't try to cheer her up when she didn't get her gift? They screamed at her to run when Casita was falling apart, Isabella tried to save her sister, and everyone was searching desperately for her when she ran off. Their house literally collapsed, their powers are gone- and the only thing they care about was finding Mirabel.
Some of yall are so easy and quick to say stuff like 'Oh, Mirabel shouldn't have forgiven her family so quickly!' and 'She should have ran off after not getting her powers and is ignored!' but quickly forgetting the fact that no, Mirabel does not hate her family, they have their issues they need to talk about after the movie, but she NEVER resented them! What she doesn't like was her not getting a gift and not being as special as the rest of the family, but that's not the Madrigals' fault, and Mirabel never blamed them for it.
The main conflict of the movie was a lack of communication and their own internal struggles that came with them being given gifts and expectations, not Mirabel disliking her family and them mistreating her.
