Happy birthday to the number one princess in the world!! 💖
~from her biggest fans :)
ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋
This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT
I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.
This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.
~~~
Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.
Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭
Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).
Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!
Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭
That's all I have to say!!! Hope you didn't mind the text wall if you made it here. I hope you like it as much as I do!!!! Happy freakin' birthday Miku!!!!
I have to deal with tagging all these characters now for my page,,, in the drafts my tags got cut off after a certain point so I think I'm massively breaching the tag limit 😭 um... I'll figure that out later...
not losing sleep that i can't tag everyone, even for page organization purposes because some characters have pretty generic names and some are a little hard to see in full yknow. If you're one of those people who tag every character in the art piece you reblog... I am very sorry.
Anyway, I'd like to present you my new AHiT AU, Cursed Birds in three digitally colored pics on a traditionally sketchy notebook. Therefore, it so happened before the invention of my silly AU idea, one week ago, with gradual interest, I watched a little gameplay video of AHiT DLC online game, Vanessa's Curse, and because of its theory and plot, it managed to develop my inspiration to include for the Conductor and DJ Grooves, two film-making birds from Dead Bird Studio, to be the sworn hosts in two separate feuds with Snatcher and Vanessa in the confines of Subcon Forest.
And moreover, I hope you will like the conceptual designs and doodles of the two bird guys as I have been drawing them again for many years. And especially in the future, I really wanted to include them along with their canon and AUs counterparts.
Art and the AU idea belongs to me (C)
The Conductor, his grandchildren, DJ Grooves, The Snatcher and Queen Vanessa from A Hat In Time belongs to Gears For Breakfast/Humble Bundle (C)
And digitally colored/rendered on this traditional sketches made in the FireAlpaca platform.
Charity Art Raffle for Mildret
Tumblr media
Recently my friend Mildret was diagnosed with colon cancer, they're only 26 years old and have no family support since their mother passed away two years ago during the pandemic due to covid, they live on their own and they're currently unable to work because of their medical condition. The insurance does not cover certain procedures at the moment and time is crucial at this point. We're gathering money to be able to do the surgery needed (a hemicolectomy and transverse ileus anastomosis) and start chemotherapies. They were told they only have 2 months to do the surgery.
Donations and Raffle tickets payment will be taken on:
Ko-fi
Or directly to their bank account (but this one probably only works on Mexico and Latinoamerica): Mildret Fuentes, Bank: BANORTE, Account (Cuenta): 0433727516, CLABE: 072078004337275166.
Thank you all for your attention and your support ❤.
I've been doing digital art for almost 2 years now, with little to no practice on actual paper for these 2 years, and that got me thinking did I Lose my touch with traditional art, Haven't picked up an actual paint brush in so long. Its easy to get lost in the vast possibilities that digital painting softwares offer, ranging from hundreds of brush textures, to tools to make your shaky lines smooth, making the perfect circles, filing a solid colour in an instant.
Where you absolutely dont have to wait for your oils or watercolor to dry up before going for the next layer, and most importantly no need to spend dollars on art supplies and if you make any mistake the undo option is always there for you.
It did make painting easier in a way, but it also comes with its own cons, when I started digital painting I felt like I had to learn from scratch how to use the particular software, and had to learn to paint all over again. Tho it catches up quick but still figuering out how to use each tool, how all the functions, brushes, layers, blend modes work. It does take some time.
Nevertheless I ventured from my point, so since I've been painting dgitally for 2 years I figured its time to indulge in some traditional work, touch base and see If im still worthy.
I tried painting a couple of small canvas and got stuck figuring out what to draw, to have the exact outcome planned out because if I decide halfway through coloring my background that I dont like how it looks, I dont have a ctrl Z to help me this time, I'll have to paint over the whole thing and start from scratch. Painting on the canvas directly is a commitment and theres a looming pressure that the outcome should look beautiful and completed, and I already have enough anxiety, not really excited about been anxious about the thing i love.
One warm afternoon I picked up a tiny notebook I had, bought it on a whim last year and it has been sitting on my shelf since then, its a 4"x4" pocket notebook with decent paper quality, perfect to try out the random black gel pen I found lying around. And I got to it, found a cozy warm place and made a small pen sketch of a tree. The texture looked nice, i did mess up a couple timeson the leaves but since its just a disposable paper I didnt worry much on it, just covered it up with more scriblings. It felt pretty good, ad I realised with digital art the one thing I'm missing is customisign how I organise and decorate my work collection.
With digital software all your art is stored as mere .png or .jpg or whichever format you prefer, but thats it, its just a photo album, unlike a sketchbook where you can decorate the cover, add a couple of sticker or notes to it, stick a dried flower you found, or just about anything creative.
The overall feel of a sketchbook is entirely different and I dont have to worry about each page looking like a finished work.
I love painting digitally but painting on a sketchbook is almost nostalgic, so I finally started one.
Got myself a small A6 sketcbook with a pretty floral cover,cut out the pen sketch i did and glued it on the first page, and thus started to fill each page with totally random unrelated paintings.
So anyway this was a lengthy way to tell you how painting on a sketchbook somehow made me improve my art, and felt incredibly amazing, tho I've completed just couple pages, each page looks beatifull in its own way, and i got to try out a couple of pens, and paints that I havnt used in so long.
got to try doing simple portraits, tried to double tap multiple times on the page (stupid muscle memory).
so anyway here are a few pages that I have completed, and if you did read till the end, thanks for bearing with the (rant)?
Back in October 2021, my partner and I started making a comic book. There have been two scripts, dozens of sketches in multiple notebooks, long car rides where we talk about what we want to happen.
In July 2022 I started storyboarding the script and made two seperate layouts. I only told a few close friends about it because I didn't want to give up part way through.
Today I finished coloring the images. I still have some edits to do. Some lines to tighten up and colors to adjust. Final touches to add. But the majority of the work is done. And that is so wild so say!
I'm going to start giving little teasers because I'm excited to tell this story to you! It will be available in digital download and physical copies when it is released.
Self written, self drawn, self published. Cryptid Road Trip is coming soon!
Fat Evil Women #1 devlog 1
I'm working on a new comic and I thought it would be good to share some notes on its production. I think this will be the only devlog I share publically for this comic; I'll probably include a start-to-finish log with all of the concept art and layout roughs as a tier bonus when I sell this on itch.io later. But, here's a very generous taste.
Tumblr media
This comic is eventually going to be sold as a CBR file on itch, but I'm also doing to try printing it on A3 paper [which will be folded] and making a small batch of physical copies to give away. It will probably be 32 pages long. It's going to be an anthology [with one particularly long story]. In other words, it's going to be a complete comic, like one you might buy in a comic shop, rather than something more "informal" in shape. In the future, I plan on making enough of these to collect them in trade paperback form, perhaps as a print on demand book?
So far I've done a couple of layouts and compiled a ton of notes. Work on this project began with a simple two-page layout for a bimbo sequence.
Tumblr media
I did all the pencilling, inking, and coloring in between two and four hours I think. The first panel on the second page uses an old drawing of the bimbo character I'd drawn several months ago.
I then made a sequence using a Goblin Queen character I'd created around a year ago. Here's the sequence and the original illustration I'd done. The second incomplete panel is from an old drawing I started but never finished.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, the Goblin Queen who looks nothing like a goblin is meant to be a reference of sorts to the Goblin King from Labyrinth, if you were wondering. Except my Goblin Queen mostly hangs out with dark elves.
These sequences are only meant to be rough guides for the final drawings, but I put way more efforts into my layouts than I actually need to. After making these two page sequences, I decided to do something a little more ambitious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I illustrated a woman wearing a shiny black dress, and she reminded me of an old indie porno producer character I'd created a while ago named Demonia [please ignore how terrible the old three part sequence looks; I didn't know how to draw fat women yet].
When I started plotting this sequence out in my notebook, it was only four pages long. But I added a bunch of extra panels in later and brought it up to six pages [The numbers are original panels, and the letters are ones I added in after making the first complete rough layout.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made some concept art for characters I'd mentioned in the script that didn't have designs yet, as well as a few locations. I then compiled all of that into a CBR file I can refer to while working on the final art [the blacked out bits in the thumbnails are photo references].
I then started work on another sequence that quickly grew beyond the six pages I was initially planning on doing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few years ago, when I first started using my Wacom, I illustrated an androgynous spider creature. Much more recently, I started moving overseas and started designing new characters in my sketchbook that I was planning on making digital pieces with later, and I revisited my spider concept. If you overlay the rough spider drawing from the sketchbook page with the digital WIP below, you'll notice I did a whole bunch of warping and stuff to the individual limbs to make it look better.
Tumblr media
This WIP will appear in finished form in the spider comic somewhere; look out for it.
Anyways, I decided this spider would be perfect for a weight gain sequence, and so I started making concept art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just a fraction of the concept art I created. I've done at least 15 pages of work for this comic, and a lot of it is exploratory work. In the beginning, I had basically no idea what the plot of the sequence would be, and designing new characters and illustrating scenarios gave shape to the story.
Tumblr media
After making maybe three or four pages of sketches, and writing a list of elements I wanted to be in the story in my notebook, I made this rough synopsis of the plot. I then started working on a CBR file for the spider sequence that includes photo references, sketches, old designs I want to repurpose, scans of my notebook, etc.
Tumblr media
Work was slowing down in my notebook, and so eventually I made a text document and started writing down panel-by-panel bullet points. Of course this all needs to be adapted into rough visuals, but I covered a lot of ground with this after building my foundation.
You might be wondering what the point of all this pre-production work is. The problem with comics as a medium is that it's extremely time intensive, and so you have to get all of the iterative stuff done long before you put pencil to bristol board for the first time [assuming you only use bristol board during the very last stage of your process].
[Old comic artists were sometimes drawing upwards of 40 pages a month, and they didn't have time to think things out so thoroughly. But for people who aren't drawing multiple books a month, it's been common to do multiple waves of layouts for decades, and this pre-production stuff has only gotten more common. Which is good; quality > quantity. The video on layouts below is a great overview.]
[Note: Apparently Ed Piskor is a massive creep. This was not public knowledge when I wrote this post, and so apologies for the Cartoonist Kayfabe embed.]
youtube
While I was doing layouts in my notebook for this spider sequence, I started working out a page that ended up not hitting all of the notes it needed to. If I'd been drawing by the seat of my pants, it would've been a big problem, but when you're doing layouts with illustrations only two or three steps above stick figure drawings, re-doing a page is not a hassle.
You might be wondering what my actual workflow is for producing finished art. Once I got very used to the feeling of using an Intuos Wacom, I told myself I was going to draw comics entirely digitally. It made a lot of sense; I could use layers, perspective work is a lot easier digitally, and I can fix mistakes and/or warp things a lot more easily.
Over time, I realized I hated doing everything digitally. There are many things that are better digital, like coloring. I prefer drawing pin-ups digitally. But I really don't like drawing an entire page digitally, and I realized my previous serious comic attempts had all petered out when it was time to start doing the final work in the computer, after the layouts and stuff had already been completed.
Of course, I'd tried making professional quality work without computers before. But it's nearly impossible to do that inside of a sketchbook [although I'd drawn many joke comics in highschool using a sketchbook], and using only bristol board I had problems with things like perspective; I have a lot of respect for older artists who couldn't use any digital tools.
So, I've resolved to buy a scanner and printer. I'm going to make final layouts in my art programs that have skeletons laid out where I want them, perspective grids, panel layouts, etc, and then I'll print them onto bristol board using light blue ink [which doesn't get picked up by a scanner]. I'll then do the final pencilling and inking on bristol board, scan those pages, and do any touch-ups and coloring in the computer.
Tumblr media
I forgot to mention that none of these comics have words. Perhaps future issues of Fat Evil Women will have dialogue and stuff, but as a conceptual thing this first issue is basically completely silent. When I was making panel grids digitally to start working on some final layouts, I noticed that, when you don't have any speech bubbles, a traditional six panel grid looks way too square and vertical. So, I've decided to make my spider sequence on a four-tier grid, which shouldn't be a massive change. The entire story uses uniform rows, and so it just means moving stuff back. There are no dramatic page-turn moments that will be compromised by this change.
I might have to alter the Demonia sequence as well, but probably not. Since the height of the panels in the two page sequences are variable, I think I'll leave them exactly as they are.
I was planning on including a giantess sequence in this first issue as well, but if I reach 32 pages without it then I'll have to push it to a later issue. But since I'm moving to four-tier layouts, I might end up with a lot fewer pages than expected.
striker design process notes
a bit about the process for designing my fake omega strikers character. posted separately since not everyone will be interested.
the base character design comes from my pngtuber i use while streaming, which is loosely based on my irl appearance/outfits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
obviously, there were going to have to be some major changes, but i wanted there to be some consistency between this character and the striker character. the haircut is the same, but i iterated it two different ways (one tied, and one down). the jacket also makes an appearance in one of the striker designs with most of the same patches and pins, but recolored to match the color palette. some other aspects made it to the striker design like the baggy pants and chunky shoes, but they aren't as iconic or important in my mind.
the originals are both pen sketches i jotted down while running errands. tbh most of my projects start off as shitty, quick, and EXTREMELY rough sketches or thumbnails in my tiny pocket notebook. i find that having a basic idea of what im gonna draw makes me feel infinitely more confident while transferring it to digital, even if i know i'll have to make edits. i usually force myself to draw these initial sketches in pen, so i dont overthink and waste time redrawing it a million times. im sure that strat doesnt work for everyone, but i still thought id share.
honestly the hardest part of this was making sure that my character fit into the omega strikers "aesthetic", which is this sort of futuristic, streetwear, sportswear combo??? to match this, i added things like the goggles, arm guards, knee pads, straps, sneakers, etc.
this past week ive drawn a metric ton of omega strikers fanart b/c there are so many interesting aspects of the character designs. here are some things i tried to integrate into my own:
a striking color scheme. this doesn't mean having ALL striking/saturated colors (although some characters do that). it just means having a set of colors that define the character, usually one or two colors to make up the majority, and one or two to highlight parts of the character and make them pop.
so many accessories... i tried to make sure that there was no "dead space" in the design. with most strikers, even if their outfits are very straightforward, there's a pattern or accessory to break up the monotony.
weirdly, a lot of strikers have a sort of... triangular, chevron pattern? idk how to describe it but SO many of them have it somewhere on their outfit. so i went wild with it, occasionally converting it into straight stripes when necessary.
some strikers have something dramatic on their outfit that indicates motion. so like, something that will move around when they move. this could be hair, ribbons, straps, jackets, capes, etc. since my character's hair isn't quite long enough to float around, i added the scarf. this step was especially important for me since i sort of wanted my character to be a speed-based zoomy striker, so the impression of movement was essential.
sheeeesh i've written a lot. sorry for the wall of text lmao
i have a lot of other projects this week, so i wont be able to draw lots of omega strikers for a while, but ill come back to it, promise >:)
that's all. see ya ~
Hi! I’m Zeke. I just got a kickass Asteroids sketchbook with lots of grid dots. I think it’s compatible with those cool digital pens that automatically scan your work. Seeing it made me decide it’s time to do that thing I do every few years - try to learn to draw. I found a $5 set of colored pencils at Ross, ordered a cheap art pencil set, and here we are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have a pretty severe lack of drawing talent, making me a terrible autistic. I’ve taken multiple college beginner level art courses and the one result of all of them was failure, either because I was a terrible student, had a terrible teacher, or both.
One time I learned that after class is over, you’re supposed to take your work home and finish it there. I thought that with the model gone everything was done that could be done, but I learned I was wrong during our mid-term portfolio review!
Today I learned that thumbnail sketches aren’t actually studies of your thumbnail, which made sense during a life drawing class because hands are hard and the teacher didn’t bother to tell me otherwise when she came to look at my work.
I’m going to try and do something every day - it may be terrible, but at the least I’ll overcome my twin guilts of buying and never using a nice notebook, or buying a notebook better than I deserve and ruining it.
Here’s my first entry. Entries? In the spirit of video games and organization, color swatches and some fourth-gen-ish characters. From memory. Not even bothering with shading lol.
Tumblr media
Genuine considerations for improvement - there’s a reason people make jokes about drawing from memory as a way to produce bad drawings!
I still have a major tendency to draw very small and always have. That’s something I gotta break out of to improve.
Exaggerated proportions are actually very, very difficult when starting out and I’m actually going to start with like...tangible, normal objects in the world, like we did in my actually very good remedial art for programmers class.
I don’t know why I gave Kirby some Toriyama eyes, did my brain just think “pink menace that eats chocolate and people” and declare Majin Buu?
PS I also realized I am also starting this project to spite this man and his absurdly high baseline of “my art sucked” when he’s out here producing better work in his crap phase than most do in our entire lives. Look at this man. Look at the audacity. He has genuine good advice in his channel but THE AUDACITY.
Evolution of my art. Made this for myself because I wanted to see my own progress but I accidentally just made myself sad with how much of my art I've lost and the years when I hardly drew anything.
2011- One of my first digital art pieces. Redraw of a photo I found on Google. Eyebrow and mouth are immediately off-portion, but as a fully colored piece I think it is pretty good for a beginner. It was really small tho, I didn't understand resolutions yet!
2012- Homestuck phase. A year full of art to choose from, this was one of the last drawings I made that year, and honestly I still think it looks really good. The way I drew eyes back then was totally different.
2013- Supernatural phase. I was doodling a lot on homework and notebooks, but actual finished pieces are hard to find now. I've lost sketchbooks from this era. Perhaps even burned them, haha. This was done on whiteboard.
2014- This self-portrait was my magnum opus at the time, done for art class. There was a level of detailing textures here that I'd never care to revisit and this piece easily could have taken me 50 hours or more to complete. The nose/mouth feels so off to me, now, although I clearly broke my bad habit of drawing small pointed chins with this one. Each year I look at it hanging in my parent's house it makes me cringe more. Charcoal.
2015- Mostly MIA. I have some pen drawings from this time but I thought they were skippable and I only had room for 10 years here. I went to film school so I was focused on that creatively.
2016- Got into watercolor this year. Wasn't done on watercolor paper so it warped a lot. I don't really mind. End of my vanity era. I was in an art class, animation class, and character design class this year. Maybe got a little burnt out on art.
2017- Height of my pen drawing obsession, although most of the drawings I did were at work, and were hung up at work, and may still be there even though I am long gone now? Sorry about the weird crop it was a horizontal piece.
2018- Yes, similar to the previous year, but I see improvement in pen technique. I rarely took time to just sit down and draw other than in-class doodles.
2019- Wedding gift for my sister of her and her husband (although I cropped her out lol). Large watercolor piece where I was rushed and had to finish the background as an abstract fall leaves. I'm still on the fence about it overall.
2020- My digital art renaissance. This was the year I started to really realize I was utterly incompetent at backgrounds.
2021- I was really focused on photography this year, although I did do some sketching here and there. My laptop became mostly unusable for digital rendering so that cut down on my motivation.
2022- I discovered watercolor brushes, my beloved. I closed the door on many of my other creative outlets which seemed to bring back my love, passion, and motivation for drawing again.
Hopefully I can share a 2023 piece with you soon to show my improvements 🤗 I've been sketching a lot like I did back when I was 13 and it feels good!
personal use is okay!! :D for things like pfps, just credit me somewhere
some more detailed things about me below the cut :]
what i draw
i draw a lot of fanart of whatever interests me! so please don't follow me if you only want to see fanart from one thing haha,, though the most consistent subject i draw is vocaloid (mainly the mascot characters and how they appear in different songs) and fe awakening (mainly robin, of either gender). i also have ocs that i might occassionally subject you to. oc masterpost coming eventually hopefully TwT by the way, all art of my oc can be found in the #mayors ocs tag~
here's some things i generally like as well, though no guarantee i'll be mass producing art for it like the other stuff i mentioned
☆vocaloid (favorite characters are probably rin, miku, una, meiko, and kaito. favorite producers are utsu-p, ghost, and pinocchiop. casual enjoyer of kikuo, nyanyannya, vane, and kairiki bear) ☆fire emblem (even though it's probably the weakest game i've played, i really like fe awakening, even past it featuring robin lol. i have played and enjoyed all the modern titles!) ☆super smash bros (heavily intertwined with my enjoyment of fe. i really like the crossover stuff about it and used to write fic about it (unpublished)!! i may occasionally draw some of the characters from that cross over here. be warned though that what i tag as "smash bros" is wildly inconsistent across my page TwT) ☆jojo (favorite parts are 4, 5, and 7!! johnny and josuke are my favorite protagonists) ☆shining/love nikki (don't play LN anymore but shining nikki is one of the only tolerable gachas ive played lol! i love the fashion and might sometimes draw suits from the games or outfits i've made) ☆persona (suuuper casual though, only played 4 and 5) ☆rhythm heaven (i just think it's neat!! also fever's soundtrack rocks my world) ☆stardew valley (cool farming game yeah) ☆animal crossing (though i have much to criticize about NH, i really like using it for background inspo lol)
haha sorry for the ramble. but yeah i draw a lot of stuff pertaining to the things i like, some more than others. all art of that nature can be found in the #fanart tag.
supplies and brushes!
in case you're curious about the things i use to make my art, here it is. i like making both traditional art and digital art depending on how i feel.
traditional supplies
paper - i almost always draw in sketchbooks. for full colored pieces, i'm fond of strathmore's visual journal sketchbooks (the ones i'm using atm are mixed media). for on-the-go sketches and doodles, i use a notebook with dotted paper, nothing fancy. sketching - i like using a red grading pencil (essentially a waxy colored pencil with an erasing) for sketching since markers and paint blend into it which means less erasing. i also use a regular mechanical pencil or gel pen for concept sketches or doodles. inking - there's a lot of inking tools i like! i like using staedtler pigment liners for simple lines and hatching, as well as tombow brush pens for quick line weight. markers - my primary coloring tool. while they're not perfect, i primarily use ohuhus; they're great if you're starting out since they're quite cheap! i also use a grab-bag of other marker brands like tombow or copics, but those are my mains. colored pencils - prismacolors, baybee!! i mainly use these for lineart and additional shading and texture. paint - also far from perfect, but i use the himi jelly gouache for paintings even though i'm kinda ass at it. i also used to use a very crusty windsor & newton watercolor kit. as for brushes, idk i inherited most of mine and they work fine.
digital stuff
program - i use procreate on an ipad to draw digitally. i know it's basic but it gets the job done for me default brushes i like - among the brushes that come with procreate, the ones i like are: HB pencil (sketching), 6B pencil (sketching), technical pen (inking), gel pen (inking), honeyeater (vintage), and campagnia (vintage). would like to make a detailed brush list eventually TwT brush packs i like - i download a lot of brushes, but these packs are ones i absolutely swear by. all are free! jingsketch basics is a must-get for anyone that likes digital painting. i use "soft chalk" to render. rusty rakes is a set of textured line brushes i love to use to add extra hatched textures to my paintings. mainly rely on rr dark. i also use a halftone brush to add texture to my art, but unfortunately i cannot find it or the author! will update when i do~
anyway
thank you for reading. this post might get updated in the future when i think of more stuff to add or change. i def wanna update my meet the artist thing cuz that is oooold!!
bye bye!!
Episode 2: Ideation + Moodboarding
ASTRID’S ATELIER EPISODE 2: Ideation + Moodboarding
This is the first time Soyoun gets to show off her designing process since she graduated from university, so she's both excited and nervous to see how this goes. She's in the comfort of her studio as she sets up the cameras for today's video.
"What's up? It's your girl Astrid and welcome to yet another episode of Astrid's Atelier! I'm glad you guys aren't sick of me yet." She winks at the cameras as she shows off the space around her.
"After I got all your votes, the most I got was for techwear, so we will be dressing up my mystery muse in that aesthetic. And honestly, you guys chose well. I can't wait to see how my lovely muse will pull this off." Soyoun winks at the cameras. "But before we can get there, I'm afraid we'll be going on a long and creative journey before we have an actual outfit."
Soyoun then pulls out the scrapbook which she uses for mood boarding. "Before anything else, the first thing I do is brainrot. As the designer, it's up to me to create a cohesive design. To do that, I have to organize my ideas and inspiration into a mood board." She then opens her scrapbook to reveal several mood boards she made back in college. "As you can see, I organized my past ideas and inspirations into a mood board so I didn't lose sight of the vision I had for those outfits. Though I tend to use digital mood boards more, some of my less tech-savvy professors wanted a physical mood board hey could touch."
Soyoun then shows all the material she already gathered for this mood board. "As with every mood board, I collect inspiration. I look at magazines, books, photos, nature, and social media for images. It doesn't matter where you find your inspiration. It's totally up to you where you find it. In fact, for this one, I turned to lots of sci-fi films." As someone who isn't a fan of the genre, Alize would know how much of a sacrifice this is for her. "But wherever you choose to find your inspiration, you should house it in one location you can easily find. It can be a P*nt*r*st or M*l*n*t* board, a notebook, an album on your phone, or in this case, a scrapbook."
Soyoun then shows off what she has so far. When the camera zooms in, the viewers can see screenshots from sci-fi films and outfits worn by female video game characters. Then the camera pans to runway outfits from designers who have done techwear, as well as photos of weapons, sci-fi aesthetics, and blurred photos of Soyoun's muse. There are also song lyrics and movie quotes to help set the mood of the outfits. Finally, sharp-eyed viewers will see blurred doodles of Soyoun's muse in various poses and positions.
After this, Soyoun fears she'll lose the viewers once things get a little bit on the technical side. "Now that I have enough research material, it's time to compile them all. I like writing down and sketching my ideas for a design, silhouette, construction, material, and color of the outfit. It's a bit more on the technical end, so I will do a separate video of that if I don't bore you." Instead, the video shows a sped-up version of Soyoun through out various days, sometimes, the venues changing from her private studio to the dorms, and sometimes even during schedules, writing copious notes and doing lots of sketches until she comes out with one she's satisfied with.
When that's done, Soyoun is seen back in the studio, standing in front of a huge corkboard as seen in those police films. "Today, I'll be showing you guys how I do my moodboards! I'm making them bigger than usual so it's fun to film. And i also like the whole vibe of it looking like those suspect boards we see on TV. You'd think we were committing a crime after this." Laughing to herself Soyoun then starts assembling her mood board with the images she found for the look. "I don't just confine myself to fashion images," she admits to the camera. "I also included materials I think I could use like leather, metal, and other things that would fit." She gestures to the part where several fabric samples are pinned, as well as a few metal chains. Even several keychains of anime weapons are displayed.
"As you can see, this techwear look I'm going for is a futuristic, cyberpunk with a hint of video-game badass female protagonist," she says with a laugh. "This is hardly my usual style, so I am curious to see how my final look will turn out."
"To see what happens next, I hope to see you in a future episode of Astrid's Atelier. In the meantime, I better clean up and head to practice, or else Yamapi will have my head!"
Chuckling, she throws in one more thing for the audiences. "While waiting to see what happens next, I am curious to see who you all think my muse is! Those who get it right will get a... uhm... I don't know yet, but I will talk about it with my muse and the powers that be known as the managers. I really gotta go now. Skrrt skrrt!"
About Author I’m Flo, the face, person, artist, voice behind Art with Flo! The name is short for Floortje actually. I’m a digital artist and I love to share everything I know with all of you, YAY! So you want to know how Art with Flo came to be? Here’s a little story about how got into art. MY CHILDHOOD I probably started drawing when I was about five years old and I enjoyed it a lot! I loved to draw people and animals, like horses and big cats. I made the portrait on the right when I was about six years old. I was always busy trying to improve my skills and learning about drawing by reading lots of books and looking at the work of others. After that period, I forgot about drawing for a while. Even though I kept drawing in my notebooks at school. DISCOVERING DIGITAL ART When I was about 20 years old I learned about digital art when visiting the website of CG Society.
I saw the work of Bobby Chiu and was immediately inspired, I wanted to make stuff like that too! I bought a Wacom tablet and started practicing. Drawing digital became like an obsession and I couldn’t stop reading and learning about it. I read a lot of Imagine FX in that period and I still love that magazine. My biggest achievement in that period was getting my work published in Ballistic Publishing’s Exotique 7, I was so proud! The whole world could see my work now. But then, nothing… WAKING UP THE ARTIST I guess life got in the way and I forgot about art for a while. I studied Psychology at the Open University of Amsterdam and got a job after that (and two very cool kids!). About 8 years ago my inner artist awoke again though and I became a professional (wedding) photographer. It was really great to be a photographer and channel my creativity. But the urge to draw again started to emerge too. I still had my trusty old Wacom drawing tablet, so I got back to it! That’s three years ago now. I got active on Instagram and things started growing 😉 Soon after I even started a YouTube channel, I was so nervous about that! THE START OF ART WITH FLO I got a new Wacom drawing tablet, bought an iPad Pro and got more serious about digital art (if you’re curious about the exact gear I use, you can find it on my gear page actually). It took me a lot of years, but now art is a huge part of my life and I’m happy to share everything I have learned. Besides art I really enjoy traveling and visiting new places and meeting new people. Of course I still grab my photo camera when I do! More courses from the same author: Art with Flo
✨ 12 things I learned about Inktober ✨
Ok. I know, Inktober is already ended, and you'll be bored reading this post because it's way too long. I totally get it. But I really appreciate it if you read this whole thing. I worked so damn hard to make this thing. And a little disclaimer, this is just based on my personal experience.
Inktober is all about ink, literally. It's a 31-day drawing challenge, where you have to draw with ink for 31 days every October. Besides ink, you can work with other mediums and colors too, apart from black and white. Also, you can make inktober digitally, like some artists do. There are no rules for participating in Inktober, except sharing 31 artworks online.
I've been doing Inktober since 2019. It's my fourth time joining this art challenge, except in 2022. It was quite difficult to start without planning or any knowledge of using ink at all. I wasn't used to drawing with pens until I started to do more studies and sketches using them. It's better to look at more artwork from other artists for inspiration, as well as to get ideas and use them as references. I wouldn't say "copy" it. I'd been experiencing art blocks, burnouts, and stress. But in the end, it really paid off.
It's time to share my 12 things I learned about Inktober:
📝 Make a plan ahead
Make a plan at least a month in advance. This is life-changing, at least for me. I write down all my plans in my notebook, such as goals, preparations, art materials to use, etc. I wish I knew it sooner when I started Inktober four years ago 🥲.
✒️ Practice inking
An ordinary writing pen will do if I don't have any drawing pens or ink to use for practice. It's quite hard using it at first because I can't erase it if I made mistakes. I tried to get used to drawing with pens. Also I started to practice strokes and hatchings, as well as sketching directly on a sketchbook.
🖥️ Gather references from the internet
Google Images and Pinterest are two of the best sites to find references. Some people are encouraging artists to NOT use references, which is WRONG. Do not listen to these dorks. It literally helps to sketch out ideas. You can make your own references, too.
🖼️ Get inspirations from other artist
To get me inspired, I take a look at the best artworks made by incredible artists. I saved them for later and took them as inspiration.
💡 Sketch out ideas and make thumbnails
This is essential! Before doing ink drawings, I first sketch out ideas gathered from references as many as I could. Thumbnail sketching is a great tool too. It's where I plan out my composition before making the final artwork. I can't explain it enough. My brain has reached its limits.. lels..
🧪 Experiment with other mediums
Apart from ink, since I don't have enough ink and pens I could use for Inktober, I tried to play with other mediums, like watercolor, colored pens, poster paints, etc. Just keep experimenting and having fun with them.
⚠️ Take risks
One of my favorite things to do is to push myself to take risks. Don't play safe. I tried to step out of my comfort zone and draw something that I hadn't drawn before or use mediums that I hadn't used before.
One example here is ink washes on my sketchbook, which is supposed for dry media only because the paper is thin. I took my risk to do ink washes. I put a lot of water in it and layered it up multiple times. It turned out great. I was expecting that the paper would be ripped off, but it didn't, "almost".
🖌️ Let it go from mistakes. These are "happy little accidents"
Does this quote above ring a bell? If you know, you know. Every time I do art, I don't expect "perfection". Almost of my artworks are filled with imperfections. If I make mistakes with my artwork, I'll just leave it there. I'd set my expections down all the way to the void. Who needs to make art "perfect"? Mistakes aren't as bad as they sound.
🛌 Take breaks if I need to (LITERALLY I NEED IT!!)
While doing inktober, I'd been encountering burnouts, art blocks, and stress. I'd been doing these "repetitive" tasks everyday. When I feel grumpy, I take a break for an hour or more. Sometimes, I take a nap, or do things other than art. And then I proceed to do it right after breaks.
💯 Ignore algorithms and engagements
I have high hopes that my artworks will get noticed. Always. This is the most challenging one if you're trying to grow your social media accounts, especially if you have a small number of followers (less than 1,000). Since algorithms are changing anytime, especially on Instagram, chances are not getting more reach. I found this way more annoying; no matter how hard I tried to get more attention in my art, it always ended up reaching fewer people.
I'd been uploading my inktober drawing process videos for 31 consecutive days on Instagram and TikTok. They said, post more reels to reach more accounts than just posting a photo or carousels, as well as using "trending" audios. I'd been filming the process, editing, and uploading it to my social media every day for 31 days. 31. FREAKIN'. DAYS. And it's always never been easy. Ever! THIS IS BULLSHIT! INDEED!
On the bright side, despite my issues on growth, someone is still barely seeing and interacting with my art, which I'm really grateful for. Somehow, I've been getting some likes, comments, shares and follows. I guess that's how social media works. It only sees specific people, and that's okay. It would take ages to grow my accounts.
👩‍🎨 Interact with other artists
There are so many incredible artists everywhere on social media. So, I tried my best to interact with other artists -- just give a like to their art, comment (I'm getting used to it), share and follow.
❤️ Have fun!
The importantest shit of all is to have fun. Inktober is an art challenge, not a contest. This is why you shouldn't take this seriously. Forget all the doubts in our minds. Just to have fun. That's it. Finished your Inktober? Don't forget to treat yourself.
So, yeah. If you reached down all the way to the void, thanks for reading this. I've never writing this stuff before, and it's freakin' hard as hell, not to mention having a mental block. it took over a week to come up with these words, but I made it to the end 🥹.
I want to express my gratitude for those who supporting me and appreciating my art, as always ✨❤️. y'all the best!
Roze Dreamer
This is one of my main horse ocs. She's one of the first pony characters I created back in the day on general-zoi's pony creators on deviantArt. Her design has changed massively from when I first made her, but this is her most current one.
Tumblr media
above is a bust headshot I drew of her waving hello
Full Name:
Roze Dreamer (rose dree-Mur)
Nickname(s)/Aka:
Dreamer, Rozey(rosey), Randa-roze(rANDuh-rose), Roze(rose)
Age:
22 years
Gender:
Female
Pronouns:
She/Her; They/Them
Species/Type of Creature/Race:
Pony/Pegasus (without wings)
Height:
3' 8" or 107cm (just under average mare size)
Slightly longer than shoulder length
Hair Color:
[Left side] Milk chocolate brown (with a natural red-ish tint in the sunlight) and a washed-out used-to-be red (now salmon) strip of dyed hair. [Right side] Stripes of dyed pastel pink, purple, and blue hair, all in one small section
Eye Color:
Light lavender/Pastel purple/Light purple (Pupils are almost-black purple)
Usually carries:
Dark turquoise colored satchels/saddle bags; mechanical pencils, half lined half unlined notebook,
Usual attire:
None usually; sometimes wears a black hoodie or scarf, with an optional grey beanie
Cutiemark:
A purple rose with the green stem, lined with small thorns, twirled in a loop and the end pointed down, cut to form an inkwell pen tip, dripping rainbow-shimmer deep purple ink. The leaf, attached to the outer loop, is half on fire with a yellow-orange-red fading flame. A small white/very light blue cloud partly covers the front of the rose.
Personality/Backstory:
A very shy, mostly kind, easy-going horse who's considered a bit of a silly weirdo at times. She's not one to talk a whole lot around creatures that are strangers to her, but she still wants to/likes to socialize with others. Most of the time, she comes off as awkward, usually waiting for the right moment to speak up and not make too much of a fool of herself. She took the phrase "don't speak until you're spoken to" very literally at a young age, mainly out of fear that others would dislike her or wouldn't care what she had to say anyway. Not being really exposed to many social situations as a filly led to her current struggle of interacting with others. She usually was and still is the shoulder to cry on, always willing to listen to others and console them. She doesn't mind doing such, as long as they are genuine and aren't tricking and trapping her in situations.
She does tend to get stuck in her head A LOT of the time. Sometimes it's to a debilitating point of not wanting to get out of bed or do much. Usually, art is her outlet for such, where she can draw or scribble whatever she feels the need to.
Roze loves doing artsy things, like clay sculpting, pencil and paper sketching, acrylic painting, and digital art on her laptop with her drawing tablet. It's mainly horses and cartoony animals and creatures either from her imagination or shows she watches. She loves to sit around and watch nature do its thing. Like sitting outside and watching the clouds drift by, finding interest in swaying trees as the cool breeze shakes some leaves down, hyper-focusing on a jumping spider for 4 hours straight to watch it interact with a small cricket, looking up in awe at bigger birds flying through the sky, stuff of the sort.
Missing wings:
Roze cut off her own wings when she was 16, thinking and feeling like life wasn't worth living anymore. The story behind such deals with her natural habit of getting stuck in her own head, usually with negative thinking and assumptions that aren't 100% true. The reason why deals more from her past trauma and her not having any outlets for her emotions and being too scared and hopeless to ask for help. She has since regretted that decision heavily and is trying to have a more positive outlook on life, as some things causing her distress are lessening. Gaining motivation to try and find ways she can fly on her own again is usually difficult for her. Motivation is growing as she tries to look more on the positive sides to her life now. Thick weather-proof patches are stitched over the area where her wings would be.
Hobbies:
Drawing
Vibing to music
Playing video games
Watching nature
Sleeping/napping
Jumping spider keeping
Likes:
Hugs (both giving and receiving)
Pineapple on pizza
Plushies/soft stuffed animals
Miniatures (figurines, dioramas, items, etc-)
Mythical creatures/legends
Caring for/being around animals
Favorite animals are big cats, small cats, butterflies, ferrets, jumping spiders, giraffes, snakes, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and many others-
Talents:
Artistic creativity/ability to draw
(still discovering what she's good at)
Dislikes:
Bugs flying/leaping towards her
Large crowds of unknown strangers
Embarrassing social situations
Talking about her wings situation
Weaknesses:
Very small and cute things
Soft fluffy things (will try to pet/snuggle it)
Sudden loud noises
Fears:
Being trapped/submerged under water
Being yelled at randomly
Upsetting others by accident
Being left alone by creatures she trusts
Habits:
Procrastinating until last minute
Shaking her back right hoof while sitting
Sticking her tongue out while focusing on something
Daydreaming/spacing out
Slight twitching when highly anxious
Pets:
None
Favorite color(s):
Purple
Red/maroon
Blue
Pink
Crush/Lover:
Yes, she's taken.
Sexuality:
Pansexual
Final Product, The worst animator Butch Hartman:
For this animation, it was to choose what animator to do a 30-second of clip. It was a bit vague but was a lot clearer by the end. There were many terrible animators though I have chosen Butch as my subject. I have gone with Butch because I thought it was an intriguing idea to explore the actions of what happens after fame and fortune get to one's head. I was going to do a project that I was going to enjoy and know what I would be able to complete. It was a combination of things that made this idea. There was one that was too dark to cover, one that didn't have enough info about, and the last one that was surprisingly boring. I nearly didn't go with Hartman because I was confused if we had to talk about the works. They clarified that we could talk about their life. I thought through the concepts a bit more, writing them down on paper with sketches, bullet notes, and a tiny amount of thumbnailing. I left the design elements for last, as I wanted to focus on the slapstick humor more. I wasn't pleased with the initial animations and returned my attention to thumbnailing. I am glad that I decided to plan my project in digital first. It gave me more space and time to quickly see what ideas worked best in animatic form rather than paper. At some point, I knew I needed to add something paper based on what I was doing in some way. So I came up with mixed media, e.g., "Dairy Of A Wimpy Kid" or "The Amazing World Gumball." It was linked because his audience was young, and it would be like a kid drawing in their notebooks. I also liked that it added personality to the animations. I also limited my color pallets to highlighters, making it seem like they weren't paying attention to class as they should be. Methods I used is that I used the dragon frame room, moved the assets to a separate folder, and dragged them onto the already-made animations. I used the printed pieces of paper as a guide and traced over them as well. During the process, I started to lose time. So I reused some assets and copied lined paper to draw over to save on completion. I lost one of the animations and ended up remaking it unembellished because of the time restraints. If I had to do this again, the changes would be to add more of my background. I mostly pulled stock-free images from google to add to mixed media. It would've been a bit better to take photographs to make it feel more personal. I would have also focused a bit more so that it has been more detailed and planned out what limits I could do.
Overall I am happy that I completed the projects and enjoyed the experience. I liked making the slapstick, music choice, and sound making. What would I do for the future moving forward is to focus more and try removing distractions.
