Suffering
We do not like to suffer. That’s obvious.
You can tell by how easily we ignore people who are suffering. And even when we don’t ignore them, we struggle to comfort someone who is suffering.
We do not like to suffer.
You can tell by how bad we are at suffering. How hard we work to avoid suffering. How we don’t like to think about suffering.
Because if we’re not around it, if we don’t think about it, then maybe, just maybe, we won’t have to deal with it.
Maybe we’ve never really put those thoughts together. But from the way we live our lives, that’s what we look like.
Which – if you think about it – is a stupid way to live. Kind of like not putting a roof on your house, even though you live in a place where it rains. A lot.
Because one thing is certain about life in our fallen world – no matter how good or bad we are, we will suffer. There’s no escaping it.
But we do have a choice. You and I get to choose who we suffer with.
We can suffer alone. And we all know how well that works.
Or we can suffer with God. We can invite God into our suffering. We can ask God to be with us, right in the heart of it.
It’s only when we refuse to suffer alone – when we ask God to be with us in our suffering, to see us through our suffering – not waiting for some perfect moment, after we’re cured, after the relationship has been healed, after we’re in recovery, after we’ve got a job, after the storm has passed – but right now, right in the middle of it.
It’s only when we invite God into our suffering that we will experience God’s grace right in the middle of the storm.
When we invite God into our suffering, as St. Rose of Lima (today’s saint) puts it, then “with suffering comes the gift of grace.”
Not because we want to suffer. But because we know we can’t avoid it. And because we’re too smart to do it alone.
When we do it with God – not just day by day, but hour by hour and even minute by minute – that’s where the grace comes in.
Not just the grace to endure. But the grace to live in God’s peace, even in the middle of the storm.

Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.
Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.
This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.
EDIT AUGUST 19th
Hilary will hit the Baja peninsula this evening at a category 2. It will arrive in southern California as a tropical storm on Sunday evening before weakening and moving into Nevada as a tropical depression.
THAT SAID: for the Americans here, even if the storm is “weak”, I want to emphasize that the main danger is rain. We are most concerned about flooding. If you are in an area at risk for flooding, take appropriate precautions as per your city or state officials’ or the noaa’s directions. Even if you end up only being mildly inconvenienced, it is better to be prepared. Go to a friend or relatives house if you live near a body of water or a very low-lying area. Make sure you have water bottles and nonperishable foods. Keep your pets indoors. Don’t wade or drive into puddles.
Anyways, here’s some maps from the NHC

And here’s a link with information in Spanish.
AUGUST 20 FINAL UPDATE
Updated info from the NHC website.

Newsom also issued a state of emergency for parts of Southern California. Widespread flooding is expected.
Good luck y’all

Unshakeable
In every situation you find Jesus in the Gospels, there’s something about Him. Something that makes Him the eye of every storm.
That patience, that unshakeable calm in the face of, well, everything. Even Good Friday.
It’s a constant. But it’s something that can be hard for us to comprehend. I remember pointing this out to my New Testament instructor years ago. His quick response? “He’s God.”
It’s an answer that didn’t sit well with me then. And it still doesn’t.
Because Jesus isn’t the only place we find that patience, that unshakeable calm. We see it throughout the New Testament. It’s Paul facing his trials and persecutions. It’s even Peter, arguably the most temperamental of all the Apostles.
The cynical part of me wants to write them all off as well-edited accounts that reduce real people to plaster saints. And yet…
And yet, we find that same patience, that same unshakeable calm in the lives of the great saints. Both long ago. And more recent. This isn’t just the product of good editing or good PR.
There’s something about the Faith. Something about the Faith when it runs wild in someone that produces that patience, that unshakeable calm.
I think it comes from something that all of us are given at Baptism. It’s part of our baptismal birthright. But it’s a part that so few of us actually use.
It’s the perspective that we see in Jesus. It’s a perspective that’s the remedy to both the tyranny of the crisis, and to the distraction of the mundane.
It’s the common thread that runs through everyone who follows Jesus.
And the closer we follow, the stronger and clearer it becomes.
St. Teresa of Avila says it best,
“Tear your heart away from everything else,
Then seek God and you will surely find Him.”

so my younger cousin is flying in to visit from brazil on sunday, and will be staying here for like, the entirety of july. which, don't get me wrong, is super cool! i love the kid! but it felt like a super weird move, considering his parents are the SUPER strict and borderline helicopter parents. even the smallest prank/roughousing with him/his little sister would lead to a strict talking to from his parents, he couldn't ever do anything without their clear permission, that sort of stuff. so letting him fly at alone at 16 to a whole different country and stay there for a whole month seemed WILDLY out of character. additionally, it just felt like a super last-minute trip. it's not like we have any plans to do when he gets here, and the flight itself and stuff only got booked like, midway through june.
and i was talking to my mom about it, kind of trying to nudge some answers out of her, and after a while she went, "yeah, i think they're sending him over here to get away for his boyfriend. see if the distance breaks them off." which, first of all, surprised me because last i checked, they didn't KNOW he had a boyfriend. literally everyone in the family did EXCEPT for them because while that entire side of the family being semi-conservative, his parents (mostly his dad) are EXTREMELY old-fashioned. so clearly something already went wrong. and considering the only reason the rest of the family knew is because one person found out and it spread like wildfire, i have a sneaking suspicion he wasn't the one to tell them, either.
and second of all. they're sending him HERE. to try to make him forget his homosexuality. i couldn't do anything but just wordlessly gesture to the multiple pride flags scattered around my room, then to myself, because really? he has like two other cousins in the us and they're sending him to me? honey i am about to introduce this kid to queer scenes you have never even heard of. he'll be returning home with labels only shrimp can perceive

Just thank you,
For hearing me when I went silent,
After everything
For hearing the words that didn’t want to leave my mouth, for pushing me to speak
For seeing the expressionless expression
It made me happy,
Please keep going.
YANAM 🤎
