do you ever think about/write about how maverick threw goose’s dog tags into the ocean? the letterboxd reviews have me thinking again.
yeah that was literally one of the first little things august 2022 me petulantly retconned . fuck that . he kept one.
in my (and many other ppls) opinion those weren’t mavs to throw away they should’ve stayed with carole
and (i try not to talk about this as much as possible but) it suggests Something about mav & goose’s relationship that the filmmakers thought his dog tags should go to mav instead of to Goose’s wife (though i acknowledge and appreciate the usefulness of the visual metaphor of him saying goodbye to goose at the end of TG) (though that visual metaphor was rendered completely moot by the whole of TGM showing that mav HASNT moved on from goose and only moves on once he has the chance to save roosters life [which is why i retconned it])
ALSO? i am sure I’m not the first person to talk about this? But, to add a second layer of confusion & analysis, uh, the dogtags mav throws into the ocean aren’t goose’s.
I’m reading “metcalf, mike” from the backside. Those are VIPER’s dogtags. for some reason.
now i choose to believe that’s a props issue… someone grabbed the wrong set of tags & they were like ehhh no one will notice… script supervisor not doing their fucking job… so i choose to believe the filmmakers MEANT goose’s dogtags & it doesn’t change the end of the movie for me.
But im interested to hear from you—does that change/add anything to anyone’s analysis to know that mav threw VIPER’s tags into the ocean? there are a lot of really weird implications that come from taking what is probably a props fuck-up at face value!!! (Viper giving mav his tags [weird], viper being mav’s surrogate dad figure, thereby this scene becomes about mav saying goodbye to his FATHER finally,.. etc.)

Mutual on Twitter was talking about Daigo instinctively feeling the need to put the pieces of Mine's ruined life back together and make him feel at ease... Is That Not The Appeal Of AraSawa As Well... like they might not know the depth of what their lives were like before in full but surely there are some details safe to share and there's very little that wouldn't sound bleak... but it's also a MineDai But To The Left sort of moment because Mine has always felt he deserves basic human decency, even if he has to earn it, but that's never been the case for Jo... [SORRY I'LL GET TO PENDING RESPONSES I'VE JUST BEEN LOST IN THE SAUCE for better or worse it feels wrong not to write in every day at this point 😭😭😭]
i remember telling my twitter mutual that arasawa was minedai but with dads and the way a light bulb seemed to go off for her was just perfect LMAO
but on the real arasawa IS a lot like minedai when it comes to some themes, and moreover they still maintain their individuality (aside from the dad aspect LMAO) in the parties involved, ESPECIALLY mine and jo
it's weird to explain, but daigo, in a sense, was an 'end goal' for mine. maybe not in THAT way, but just having his comradery was a sample of the thing he'd been striving for his whole life. ergo, mine joins the yakuza specifically due to interest in daigo, and decides to stay and commit himself to it because of daigo- and as you said, mine understands his worth and wants his efforts to be reciprocated. the problem is that he's not exactly sociable..
inversely, arakawa was, on the contrary, an accident for jo: sure, he swore up in order to be closer to his son. but now By The Fate Of The Cruel Universe jo's found himself becoming attached to arakawa too, whether he wholly admits it or not. A Cruel Fate not only in that jo undoubtedly doesn't believe he'd be deserving of something special with arakawa, but that he also shouldn't pursue something special with arakawa considering their positions in the clan (also masato would probably throw a fit and he can't be upsetting his baby boy </3)
BUT THIS IS THE SIMILARITY OF DAIGO AND ARAKAWA RIGHT so often comparing mine and jo, i never touch on how the other two relate... but of course with them, daigo and arakawa try to become closer to mine and jo (evidently we see daigo have a little more success on account of rgg refusing to let arakawa and jo be in a room together for more than five minutes). its unfortunate that we don't get to hear much of arakawa's thoughts on jo, but if it's anything like daigo and his concern over mine (i.e. worrying that mine is only concerned with money/only sees value in himself through his wealth, wanting to be closer to him and get rid of the 'stiffness' between them) i imagine he harbors similar sentiment (and being a Bonafide Father instead of a proverbial one like daigo, i wouldn't be surprised if he could be more anxious/concerned over jo, especially considering the- albeit small- age gap absent in minedai).

I just saw Batman 2022 after seeing all the talk about it and I feel like I watched a completely different movie than the majority of the movie’s fandom. How is Paul Dano’s Riddler more attractive than Zoë Kravitz’s Selena Kyle & Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne?
I know the pandemic has mentally put the majority of EN speakers, especially from the US, is a bad mental state- but y’all really gave emo Neville Longbottom, who only consumes Monster energy drink with heroin mixed in, & probably smells of week old American cheese that’s been sitting out in 120F- the oncelerfication treatment? Like I’m both concerned but also impressed.
Btw shout out to the writers, director, & Mr. Dano for nailing what a drug addict turned terrorist actually would be like. The intention was missed by a concerning amount of people but it was good, regardless. Also Mr. Pattinson did that - I love that for him when I know everyone’s initial reaction to his casting was mixed (myself included, I acknowledge I was wrong). Also Ms Kravitz? Smash I-i mean smash I- sorry smash sorry I- FINALLY A CAT WOMAN THAT MATCHES THE TONE IN A POST 90s BATMAN FILM {but also again, smash}

how’s everyone’s night going i’m thinking so hard about how two of the rawest moments we have with each individual jade (xuanwu cave + the mama lan sequence) happen in the sole presence of wei wuxian, and wei wuxian not only let’s each of them just be but does not judge either of them. other than that my night’s going great.
(contenders for second rawest moment is when jiang cheng hurts lan wangji’s feelings so badly and lan xichen has to beg to be able to have his own judgement)

not to use tumblr for peer review but how does this thesis feel to you??
There is no ontologically binding truth of the human condition, and each culture, society, and individual develops singular morals and ideologies in response to its own external stimuli. Humans are often considered a special, separate realm of creature, but at our core we hold no essence to separate ourselves from the rest of nature, and our identity is as mutable as the society we live in. Human identity is preserved through the passing of stories down through generations, but the capitalistic culture in our world today encourages the suppression of sympathetic ideas and behavior which make up a large part of human tradition. The idea of humanity as a definitive and singular distinction from the rest of the natural world is detrimental to our understandings of ourselves and one another as citizens of the world; it is up to each individual to define themself, creating a human identity they are comfortable inhabiting and diminishing the impact of the dominant paradigm’s overblown ascendancy over nature.

Truly I had forgotten until rewatching Foxy Lady how little of it is, in fact, about the foxy lady in question. Yes technically this is a boys(gn)-go-stupid-over-a-girl episode but only in the sense that there is a girl there and they would likely not have gone stupid if she were not there.
She turns up at Hutch’s place in the middle of the night in a low-cut wrap dress batting her eyes and he flirts with her in thee lightest most superficial way either of them have ever flirted with a woman and then trips over himself hastening to establish that he did NOT mean they should go to bed together when he offered her his bed.
She comes out in a towel and Starsky gets mad thinking that Hutch was planning to sleep with her - one can only assume bc the terms of their open relationship at this point dictate that the other has to know about it prior to the fact, because it very clearly has nothing at all to do with her - and Hutch again trips over himself attempting to reassure Starsky that it wasn’t like that.
Starsky, not fully believing him (and also pissed off about the whole unbelievably petty bathroom thing. what was up with that) takes her home, VERY POINTEDLY SLEEPS ON THE COUCH, and then tells Hutch, who seems utterly unsurprised to find him on the couch, that it 'made them even’. Even for what, huh. ‘Cause both of you very blatantly did not even try to get the girl. You really just wanted to give Hutch the same five minutes of betrayed jealousy and you apparently succeeded.
And then the episode ends with them alone facing each other covered in women’s underwear. I’d say you can’t make this shit up but the S&H writers very much did

Fun fact about me: I have several years of training in literary analysis in particular.
Other fun fact about me: I also write creatively.
Third fun fact about me: I am very autistic.
Fun conclusion about me synthesizing these three details: I have studied a lot about what makes a story tick mechanically, and so I can in fact occasionally go on an absolute RANT, with very little prompting, about stories in video games and why certain ones do or don’t work, at least in my opinion. This is fun for me. Genuinely. If I ever DO get around to writing that thematic analysis of the Ace Attorney games formatted like a goddamned academic thesis, it will be because I had the free time and the motivation finally aligned to spend a month or two doing something like this, and I will be happy for it. I genuinely do want to, just. Time, energy, million other projects in my brain.
... In other news, my local gaming discord was talking about Mass Effect earlier.
