people are getting mad about a contemporary art thing again so naturally I had to check it out and see if it's as empty, stupid, and pretentious as everyone is saying.

turns out Roman Signer is a down to earth dude with a sense of humour who doesn't take himself too seriously, which was exactly the vibe I was getting from his works.

"falling buckets of sand gee how original, so I guess I was making "art" all the time as a kid then 🙄" yes actually, according to Signer's own philosophy kids are making art all the time and not thinking of it as art. you can disagree with this mindset, but he does not strike me as a man who'd be in any way bothered by someone saying "I can do that myself" and then doing it themself. he strikes me as someone who would in fact encourage doing it yourself, because it's fun.

if he was a pretentious guy in his 20s claiming his pieces are so profound they can only be understood by the elite, sure I'd be annoyed. but he's just a funny lil old Swiss man who does funny and absurd little experiments and encourages you to laugh at them. I can't be mad at that. it's fun and way more accessible than people seem to think.

#there's a mini documentary where he says 'i did this kind of thing as a kid and called them 'experiments'' and. yea #if you reframe his 'art pieces' and 'dynamic sculptures' as just 'experiments' driven by the same curiosity as a kid standing in a river #or a cat knocking something off a table to see what happens #it becomes a lot more fun #there is of course smth to be said about hard work and skill that infuses art with something weightier #but i dont think this guy is trying to be weighty. he's doing something else. #there is plenty of room in the world for beautiful meaningful paintings that took many hours of skill and dedication #i dont think roman signer doing what he does is taking away from that or devaluing that in any way #because he's not trying to displace that kind of art. he's doing something else entirely and having fun doing it #ik i'm in the minority but i just enjoy a bit of absurdity. i dont think there's any harm in it #dec 2023

Right, so originally I didn't even start re-watching this video bc of James Somerton but bc I wanted to watch the iilluminaughtii part of it again (she's still making videos btw. the comments are turned off). I actually remember seeing the thumbnail for them *a lot* on my recommended but I clicked on one once and didn't even make it to the end because well. It did feel like she was reading me the newspaper lol. I really hate that kind of monotone voice so many Youtubers use now, like they're reciting you the information at the back of a cereal box. It's the auditory equivalent of watching paint dry to me.

Every new thing I learn about James Somerton's process just drives home how he almost (but really doesn't) knows what he's doing. Yes, of course you use the sources you read as a jumping off point. Of course you copy and paste the important sections into your outline document so you can reread them. That's why you put them in quotation marks.

Knowing how Taylor documents her creative process I’m sure she’s got tons of footage of the re-recording process. I have a feeling she might film another tour movie and release that during a break during the international leg and I think that some version of the film will eventually end up on streaming. I think that gives her the opportunity to shop around a documentary on the re-recordings too. I’m curious to hear her talk about the shift between creating brand new content in isolated to revisiting her older works with those who’ve been with her since the start. It would be cool if she did something similar to the “Making Of” series that she did with reputation.

The one thing I noticed very early on while analyzing Satanic Panic media from the 80s/90s is just how much of it targets public schools and education. Like half of the documentaries will start off like “schools are teaching children the occult” and touch upon that for the next hour or so. It’s something I don’t think is talked about a lot when it comes to the Satanic Panic, but the amount of focus on schools, on children’s media is admittedly, the one thing that always jumps out at me.
