Kae tempest
http://www.kaetempest.co.uk/ https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/aug/06/kate-tempest-announces-they-are-non-binary-changes-name-to-kae https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFyEFTaIJ7A
i think kae tempest has a really unique quality of voice beacsue the tone is quite steadyand curated/performed but there is so much feeling taht comes through those words its immaculate. it mkaes you feel and think and their use of metaphor and similes, of writing and rhythm and tempo are incredibly poweful and captivating because they feel so natural and honest. i love the variety of their work through their career too. how epic and sprawling and narrative 'Let them eat chaos' is compared to something as gentle and tender as 'Hold your own' or 'People's faces'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUQ5T8bG3d4 - us eof melody and half spoken half sung also is really captivating and interesting here. it still feels honest but more performed and a bit more mesmeric. i think its interesting having their eyes closed for the majority whteher this is to remember the expanse of words or to inhabit the emotion of the wriitng.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqd86is7y54 distinctive use of beat here makes this piece a lot more musical than the writing just on its own, also shows how music can be used to uplift a piece and tell us the mood of the piece. In contrast, People's faces has music that tells us to feel something quite different, something more reflective and melancholy. the video for this as well shows how impactful something simple can be and how moving something can be that we can all relate to/see within ourselves.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYBaNahELn8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDt3OunosTQ  - i mean, really fucking incredible to write an hour long musical/poetry epic and be able to keep an audience engaged through te whole thing and carry a streaming narrative with characters. use of soundscaping here is integral to the engagement and helps drive the speaking through. it keeps the pace and ryhtm but also has control over separating sections and leading the listener through aurally. Helps keep teh writing to different rythms and moods. hypnotic. natalie stewart

'Known as "The Floacist" Stewart is a singer-songwriter, poet and actress  who describes herself as a "modern-day poet". She found fame as half of  R&B duo Floetry, together with Marsha Ambrosius, in 1997. The duo  split in 2007 after selling 1,500,000 records to pursue solo careers.  Stewart's successful debut album, Floetic Soul (2010) established her as a worldwide solo artist with the singles "Forever" and "Let Me". Her second solo album Floetry Re:Birth (2012) and third solo album Rise of the Pheonix Mermaid has helped her sell over 2 million records in her career so far.
'https://www.instagram.com/floacist/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/p/CNIq4wlH9jP/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link i like the rythm and flow of the speech and the comments made through it. there's a sense of being genuine through her voice and sharing a thought quite lyrically and naturally. La Dispute
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LoPCHNBydA Interesting tone created through the aggressive vocal but fits with the anarchist rock vibe of the music. I think the speech lacks variety of tone but maybe that is made up for by the pace and dynamic of the music. They work in tandem quite well. Listener - You were a house on fire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36KM1XcAdpI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8k9rD7lx9c A really interesting dynamic between the shouting speaking with instrumentals. I love the trumpet accompaniment and think the use of softer sounds like the guitar help bring a sense of melody and softer tone to the piece. Use of silence is brilliant as well to help capture youre engagement. also really interesting. also really interesting performance style from the speaker - feels quite anguished and the breathlessness at poits makes the writing feel a bit desperate, but it's actually quite powerful Allen Ginsberg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCa70trIj8g political and poignant, shows how spoken word can  be a political activism. i don't necessarily like his voice or how he says the poem and am not sure how politically correct it is in today. I also think it goes on for waaay too long and is a bit monotone  - makes me switch off a bit as its almost too much information to hear too fast.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Ginsberg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lM9BMVFpk80 his poem Howl depicts quite a descriptive image in his writing and is almost like an epic story image description throughout with political overtones. Baz Luhrman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI I love this and how the music helps propell the piece forwrads and also adds to teh pauses and rises and falls within the wiritng. The voice is quite monotone and the writing more akin to a manifesto tahn a poem in my opinion but somehow it still works as a capturing piece because teh sound engages you and makes you listen. the pace is well kept too. The last poets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWwdV6bijwo the orchestral element really brings a different dramatic dynamic to the spoken word here, the speakers work as much more of a single voice and backing singer dynamic too. the overlapping slightly streaming consciousness of teh wriitng interjected by verses and choruses create an almost hypnotic and drawing in essence to the song, which bring an intensity to it that really helps carry teh words and enhance their poignancy. Hedwig Gorski https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpLZgmMWiwc honestly i think this is pretty dry and unengaging, the vocal is monotone and i dont think the words actually say what theyre tyring to. feels very disjointed which is jarring Lydia Lunch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDvWrpxpJ8U super angry, super punk, super fuck you, not really my vibe but okayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Szvd-kvPac8 interesting how she cahnges as she ages. this is much more ambient and less shouty but retains the tone of anarchy and political unrest. its quite sinister actually. Hollie McNish https://holliepoetry.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2z-Cd3luqA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NLpLV5nUi0 i really love the narratives she weaves through the spoken word poetry and how the polictics or poignant messages feel like they naturally flow. the rhymes follow a rhythmic and fluid pace which helps keep you on your toes etc.
Joey Kidney this is love (interlude)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmsOVHkhPMI even though this isn't a poem ina  traditional rhyming sense i think the writing is poetuc and the music helps to carry it as wuite a poignant piece of speech. BabyteethInto the sea (duet)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWwqsIQ0iAM i think this piece carries so much beauty in its simplicity and melody, its super evocative and emotive which i love similarly to the rest of the BAbyteeth score and soundtrack. I like how teh voices of the violin and guitar speak so softlya nd together.
