#* &. our safe haven / verse 7: alexandria.
@agcntmobius said: “ do i ask questions or do i just help you clean up all this blood? ” for twd verse obviously
really it wasn’t her job, but given what had happened? she feels bad, and a little bit guilty too. her neighbor had not deserved such a brutal assault, none of the alexandrians did. even though carol was still suspicious at times, no one deserved to be slaughtered in the way erin had been. to be sliced open and left for dead… carol had made sure her suffering was ended quick. a knife through her skull and she was gone. the battle that had followed was taxing on her already fragile mental state. thankfully the wolves had been defeated, and alexandria, for the time being, was safe again. who knew how long that safety would last though?
blood still coated her hands, and the remnants of the w on her forehead still remained. she hadn’t cleaned herself up yet, couldn’t bring herself too. instead she decided to try cleaning off the blood from what used to be erin’s front steps. she had a bucket and some rags, and was about to start when the man appeared behind her and spoke. head turned, looking over her shoulder at him with a slight frown. ❝ it’s obvious, isn’t it? a wolf killed erin right on her front steps. we can’t just leave it like this. ❞

❝ it’s nothing a little advil won’t fix. ❞ carol spoke softly, hand rubbing her back. she has actually suffered WORSE at the hands of a man. though being body slammed onto a concrete floor was definitely NEW. still, the pain wasn’t nearly as bad as some of the things she’d suffered from ed. really, it knocked the wind out of her more than anything. well actually it FULLY knocked her out, but she was up and moving now. ❝ we need to focus on denise, and that wolf. i don’t think he’ll kill her, NOT YET anyway. but there is no way we’ll get safely out of here with all those walkers out there. ❞

really? thats really what he wants to say to her right now while she’s holding a knife? granted it’s a butter knife, but she could still do some hardcore damage with it if she’s determined enough. lucky for him she isn’t in a murderous mood today… ❝ you’re in my kitchen right now, i’m surrounded by a lot of sharp objects. that really what you want to start with kid? ❞ carol knows its harmless fun. tensions have finally settled after the incident with pete, but she’s still keeping up that facade of happy homemaker. still doesn’t know who she can trust here, who she can be herself around. plus maybe she just needs the distraction, to distance herself from who she had been becoming. ❝ i have no interest in tobin, okay? so you can drop the whole sitting in a tree routine. ❞

carol has her fair share of scars on her body. most, if not all are a product of ed. the few that aren’t are product of this new world they have the live in. ❝ don’t worry, he’s dead. ❞ she needs to stop that train of thought before it goes too far. there was no reason to get worked up and angry over a dead man. that bastard husband of hers had no hold over her anymore.
but that’s not entirely true, is it?
words have done more damage than any hand or belt could do. it’s that which sticks with her more than the scars. the scars she can forget are there, but the insults hurled towards her? the daily degrading words? those seem to be forever. she hears him still, not as often as she used to, but every now and then when she makes a mistake or she hesitates. useless cow, stupid bitch, ugly whore… all those words swarm in her mind in those moments and cause a sense of self doubt. it doesn’t last long, but the fact it exists at all is what upsets her most.
❝ the things he would say to me are far worse than any beating he ever gave. ❞ hand reaches back to lightly touch his arm. just to connect, to know he’s there. ❝ i know, though. i know none of what he said to me was ever true. it was all just the facade of a weak, cowardly man who knew he didn’t have a chance with any woman unless he forced her into submission. you weren’t there, but when he died? i swung that pick axe into his head until it was nothing but a pile of mush. just wish i could’ve done that to him when he was alive… ❞ she turns to merle then, brows furrowed. ❝ does that make me a monster? ❞

eyes stare out into the growing darkness, the silhouettes of dozens upon dozens of infected passing her field of vision. alexandria is overrun, and they are split up and stuck in various parts of the community. weapons are still locked up, they have nothing. at least not enough to take care of the problem outside. not unless they want to lose over half of their people. carol for one does not want that. they’ve already lost too much after the wolves attacked. speaking of the wolves, she still can’t belief morgan has one here. after what they pulled, he thinks they can change? people like that are too far gone. it was useless, but some people just aren’t willing to listen to reason.
gaze shifts to the side to glance at the girl next to her. she’s still fairly new here, but she has proven to be a formidable force. carol doesn’t know whether to consider it impressive or sad. ❝ unfortunately no. we’re stuck. we go out there we end up walker food. ❞ it frustrates her too, just sitting here, unable to help, unable to save her family. they have no idea the state of the others, and some are still missing. daryl, sasha and abraham hadn’t returned, and carol just prays that they are okay. glenn was missing, presumed dead by many. carol is not so sure, she’s seen him get out of many tricky situations.
❝ that is if we don’t end up dead in here. i don’t care what morgan says… there is no reform in someone like that. he will get us killed if we don’t kill that wolf first. ❞

it had been all to easy to slip back into former behavior. pretending like she didn’t know how to survive, that she was simply a meek little housewife who missed her husband. that couldn’t be further from the truth, but until these people and this place gain her trust? that’s who she needs to be. the floral blouses are awful, but necessary to portray the part she’s playing. in her hand is a casserole dish, it’s contents a delicious spaghetti bake. her job was to feed the elderly, but this dish in particular was for the house next door. like a thank you for welcoming them to the neighborhood sort of thing. it was also a way for carol to possibly get some inside information, and find any weak points this place may be hiding.
❝ hello! ❞ tone is overly cheerful as the door to the neighboring house opens. ❝ i’m carol, one of your new neighbors. i thought i’d bring over a little offering, like an olive branch if you will. i understand it might take the community time to get used to new people, i thought i’d just try and help our case! ❞

the situation was not ideal, not to carol anyway. it had been a ruse, the two of them going beyond the gates. to supposedly help her learn to shoot. obviously ( but unknown to the rest of alexandria ) she needed no help, in fact she might even be a better shot than most of their group. carol didn’t need to train, but she had needed to get out of those walls. playing the housewife role could be a daunting task, all that socializing and pretending to be sweet. she’d been sick of it that day, hence the fake scenario created.
of course, simple outings are never really that simple, are they? of course they got into trouble, a wrong turn leading them straight to a large herd. maybe they could run, actually they probably should, but they couldn’t leave this number of walkers out and about. what if they came across alexandria? as much as she doesn’t trust that place, it is home now. they can’t have their home overrun again. ❝ stealth would only work for a few. they’d notice us anyway. we might as well just go for it. ❞ and pray to whoever they don’t die in the process.

don’t baby him? is that what he thought she was doing? in carol’s eyes it was the opposite, she was actually treating him as she would anyone who pissed her off. maybe the fact he was young did make her push a little more, but only because she was tired of seeing kids die. it was like any youth she came across eventually ended up dead. often times carol wondered if she was cursed. since coming to alexandria, she’s tried a different approach. cold and distant. it wasn’t working with sam, so why would it work for elijah right? ❝ then maybe don’t piss me off and i won’t have to scold you like one. ❞

chest heaved and her arm ached. she was too old for this shit honestly, but she also wasn’t about to give up and let the dead take her. the machete in her hand was dripping with blood from the small herd she’d just taken out. she casts a glance over her shoulder, tired and quite frankly annoyed at the moment. mostly she’s annoyed because not only is her weapon caked in blood, but herself as well. there were blood splatters across her cheeks, and arms were sticky with a mix of sweat and walker blood. yet the one behind her barely had a speck on her. ❝ i’m not trying to do anything but keep living. you could’ve helped. ❞

a brow raises. should she take that as a compliment, or an insult? she likes to hope she’s not completely unbearable to work with, but she knows she can be hard headed at times. she had all the makings of a leader, she just chose not to be one. she’s a lot like daryl in that sense. in fact, sometimes carol wonders if her personality had been molded from his own. ❝ should i be saying thank you? or… ❞

well, at least he still has his colorful language right? it amazed her sometimes, the creative curses he came up with. this situation was as good as any to pull them out too. wouldn’t it be nice if a run went according to plan, just once in their lives? carol wonders why something always has to go wrong. did they not deserve a break? head nods, and she follows after him, knife gripped tight in her hand. around the corner a walker comes face to face with her, and she’s quick to plunge the blade deep in it’s skull. blood sprays on her face as she yanks the knife out, but she doesn’t have time to think about it. not until they’ve entered the abandoned boutique. she scans the immediate area, and points to a display table that they can move in front of the door. it was heavy enough that it would stop the walkers, at least until they found an escape route.
breath is taken when all is finally quiet. well, not quiet, as the groans and thuds of the walkers outside the shop still sound, but quiet enough action wise that they can take a second to catch their breath. ❝ they never cease to show up at the worst times, huh? ❞ reaching in her pocket she pulls out a rag, using it to wipe the flecks of blood from her face. ❝ just a constant middle finger from god or whatever runs the universe. ❞

❝ you do realize the whole point of being a spy is to not be seen? nevermind chatting it up with the subject. ❞ this so called mission was for purely selfish reasons on carol’s part. she’d been caught in the pantry, and had to make some excuse as to why she was there. the reality is she was trying to steal more chocolate for herself. she had enlisted the help of carl, hoping he could keep an eye on olivia without being detected and let carol know when it was safe to make a move. ❝ what did you even say to her? you better not have blown my own cover or you’re grounded. ❞ as if she has the authority to make that call.

it does cause her heart to ache, the memory of lori and that day. everyone being split up, t-dog sacrificing himself so carol could live. she often wonders if the outcome would’ve been different if she’d been with lori. not that she’d had the most practice with c-sections, but would it have made a difference? it’s a dangerous train of thought to get lost on, so she brings herself back to the moment. ❝ oh sweetheart… ❞ there is one thing carol is certain of, and that’s how proud lori would be of her son. ❝ you’ve been making her proud all along. you didn’t shut down, you didn’t once look at judith and blame her. i know how easy it could’ve been to place blame for lori on her. ❞ a gentle hand is placed on his shoulder. ❝ you soldiered on. you kept going, you kept judith and your dad safe. you’ve been doing exactly what she would have wanted. ❞

she’s sore, but she’ll live. she’s pissed off too, but she’ll get over it. might hold a grudge for a while, but who wouldn’t after being slammed onto concrete by someone who was supposed to be on your side? she knows rosita shares in her anger, but the reality was there isn’t anything they could do. it was in the past, and honestly? carol didn’t want the fight. they’d all fought enough in the past few hours hadn’t they? between her and morgan, and the wolves, and then the dead, they’d had their fair share of battles. fingers rub over her eyes, they’re all tired, but work still needed to be done. the walls wouldn’t repair themselves. ❝ let me help you. wherever you need me, just say. ❞

❝ that’s not a good idea. ❞ spoken from behind him, she slowly comes to stand by his side. she’d SEEN the way he was STARING at doctors wife, and it was just an overall BAD IDEA. it was never good to go after a married woman. it just made things COMPLICATED. things were ALREADY complicated enough for the group right now. ❝ you ask me, you should stick to SINGLE women, rick. ❞ smirks, as she playfully bumps is arm with her own.
