Furbish From a Linguistic Perspective
Tumblr media
hi! if you're familiar with furbies you probably know the very short conlang (a sketch fictlang in particular) furbish! furbish is the language furbies speak before you "teach" them english by taking care of them. i will only be covering the '98 language, as the 2005 and 2010 language updates break some of the language rules the '98 version sets up, and I don't want to deal with that atm. also, do note i'm not a linguist, i just watch a lot of conlang critic
Phonology
Consonants
Tumblr media
furbish has 9 consonants, with one digraph (wh) counting as a consonant for simplicity's sake. these consonants are /m/, /n/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /hw/ or /h/, /l/, and /w/.
Vowels
Tumblr media
furbish has 6 vowels (including 2 dipthongs): /i/, /u/, /eɪ/, /o/, /aɪ/, and /ɑ/.
Syllables
Tumblr media
syllables are made up of vowels and consonants, shown in this chart. There are a total of 35 syllables in furbish.
Morphology
to make a word, syllables are put together using dashes, though some words are syllables on their own. additionally, new words can be created by putting a dash in between two existing words; like "ay-ay-lee-koo" (listen), a compound of "ay-ay" (look) and "lee-koo" (sound).
Grammar/Syntax
furbish seems to work almost the same as english grammar-wise, with a few differences. like many languages, it follows the subject–verb–object word order. for example, "i love you" would be "kah may-may u-nye". verbs have no conjugations and there are no tenses in furbish, along with there being no distinction between a singular and plural noun. most adjectives and nouns in furbish also work as verbs, and a word/phrase equivalent of "to be" does not exist. verbs have no conjugation, and adverbs go in front of the verb. it has two final particles, "doo" as a way to express that a question is being asked (similar to "ka" in japanese) and "wah" as a way to express excitement.
Proposals (Non-Canon)
i have a few proposals to make furbish a fuller language. for starters, making more syllable combinations for coining new words. secondly, a furby alphabet. each letter would represent a furbish syllable. another thing is filler words. i believe "ah" would be a great filler word, as furbies tend to say it a lot while being played with. i also suggest "doo", which could work as the furbish speaker questioning what they should say. finally, i've come up with a canon name for furbish in furbish. "kah-lee-koo", a compound of "kah" (me) and "lee-koo" (sound). roughly translated it means "my sound".
Tumblr media
I'm autistic about furbies and conlangs fascinate me, so I had to make this!! I hope you all enjoyed :]

The Power of Understanding / Part 10
Wobble of the Head / Part 4
THERE WE GO! LONG CHAPTER!!
Part 9
Read on Ao3 / Cheat Sheet
Summary: Now you will finally find out what they were talking about when you woke up in the morning, since you didn't understand a lick of what they said. And more importantly, why.
A/N: I gave each Link a different English accent (inspired from the regional dialects/accents in the UK), so that you could get a sense of what I meant when I say "they can communicate anyway, BUT"
As always, post first/proof read later applies.
Once again, I'm here to make you feel uncomfortable. You can find the details in the end notes, and with that said, enjoy!
Rulie did notice something was odd about you, the moment he was near you at that village that this other Link (they were pretty sure at that point that it was another Link) took them to. Since it was right before a portal appearance, he initially thought it was just the air feeling wrong again. It felt different each time, so he didn’t pay much attention to it, and didn’t immediately connect the dots.
Each time they dropped down or went through a portal, there would be some residue for a limited amount of time, since it most likely took an enormous amount of magic. It would also interfere with his own fae aura sometimes, making him spill his guts out. After he collected himself, and saw you once again, he noticed you also do have some type of an aura around you. He initially thought maybe you were part fae yourself, as you reeked of a Great Fairy to his senses. The Old Man seemed to have noticed it too, as well as the Vet. But there was also a hint, such a tiny drop of it that probably anybody but him noticed it. It was something he helped collect piece by piece.
There was a miniscule amount of Triforce of Wisdom involved, in whatever aura you had. How strange.
As the Rancher got up and started speaking to you, Rulie noticed the aura interacting with the magic residue in the air. It was not like he could see it, he was just able to feel it. Something merging, something expanding, becoming more complex. Was it… leeching energy from it? He was carefully watching you interact with the Rancher, then he noticed the Old Man and the Vet were doing the same, though he really wasn’t focusing on the conversation. He heard you speak an odd language with this new Link. Then he started to pay attention, as he felt something shift in the air once again, expanding towards him.
“No but for some reason, you speak better now?” the Rancher was saying to the Captain. His ears perked up, the Rancher sounded as if he perfectly spoke his variety of Hylian (not that it was THAT different), he sounded much more modern.
Vet finally gave in as he exasperated, “Yeah, okay, what the fuck?”
As Rulie made eye contact with the Old Man, he noticed he wasn’t the only one that noticed the shift. They nodded to each other. It must be some type of translation magic… Right? Though not that anybody ever heard of something like that, maybe except the Smith swallowing jabber nuts.
“Huh… didn’t think translation magic actually existed, just like that,” he said towards the Old Man, but also to no one in particular. Well, he wasn’t that old, but sometimes he spoke like a geezer, so might as well. Then this ‘new’ Link spoke (and by the Gods, he looked like he already had a lot of scars on his face), and it just sounded like… like nothing he has ever heard before, to him. He was also noticing that you were in some type of distress, but he also attributed it to the ‘portal sickness’ for now.
Then the Sailor pointed towards this new Link with a confused expression, “Uh, that guy is BARELY understandable.” It was still so weird for everyone to hear the others speak so clearly . There was always some type of struggle before, especially when they first met. It was better now of course, but there were times where they repeatedly asked each other to repeat things where some phrases sounded downright funny.
During the introduction round, he kept glancing at you. You kept rubbing your temples every now then, but you didn’t seem to notice it yourself. It felt so refreshing to the 8 travelers that now they could speak a bit easier with each other. When it was the new Link’s turn, you spoke instead of him and translated between them. He was the Champion of Hyrule, apparently. But as the time passed, Rulie noticed that the ‘quirky accents’ as he dubbed them, were making a comeback. But at least this new Link sounded more understandable somehow. And subtly, yet steadily, the aura Rulie first felt, was now… dissipating, it was like a silent earthquake only he could feel.
And then there was blood. Blood on your blouse, coming from your nose. It happened so fast.
“Oi, catch her!” the Rancher spoke, and luckily this new Link, the Champion, caught you right on time. In his arms, your eyes were open, your body was limp but you were unresponsive. This Link was downright frantic. The scene was horrifying on its own, but it seemed like he cared about you in a specific way.
“(Y/N), (Y/N)!”
“Hey, calm down, good that you caught her. Can you lay her down?” Rulie said calmly. Even with the nose bleeding, it seemed like a case of simple fainting. He wasn’t sure.
He didn’t seem to understand every single word Rulie said. This new Link was a bit protective, as the Captain came near to offer help to lay you down, he protectively wrapped his arms tighter around you. One could almost hear the hiss, even though nothing came out of his mouth. But the Sailor helped, gesturing a laying down motion. Then, he allowed the Captain to at least hold you for a bit, as he took out something from his belt, pressed on its… surface and a bedroll materialized, much to the surprise of others. Normally they would ask, but for now they laid you down slowly onto the bedroll.
Rulie carefully moved towards the bedroll you have been on, taking pieces of cotton from his bag. He made sure this Link saw what he was doing. Just pointed towards your nose and the material. He just wanted to stop the bleeding. The Champion just nodded. Rulie elevated your head a little bit, by rolling the bedroll and gently stuck the pieces of cotton to your nose. Your eyes were now closed, your breathing even. He checked you a bit, and overall, it didn’t feel like something was amiss physically at least.
“Just let her rest for now, okay? Rest? Do you understand?”
The Champion just nodded, he seemed to have understood this time. He leaned to a tree trunk nearby.
“Any idear wots the matter wi' 'er?" Sky started talking, as the rest of them gathered around the fire that Four lit while they were dealing with you.
“Don’t know, but I sense a lot of Great Fairy magic around her, some type of an enhancement that interacted with the residual magic of the portal,” Rulie replied. Time nodded as he spoke, "So, that be wha' felt so familiar. Fayrie magick. But I don't be feelin' it as much no more.”
At the mention of the word “fairy”, the Champion’s ears perked up, "Ni a gemmeris hi dhe'n peswar Great Fairies yn Hyrule."
“What?” was the collective response from the rest of the Links. This one seemed to have kind of understood them now, but they weren’t able to completely understand him yet. He just sighed and stayed silent.
The Vet spoke up, “It’s still there, but I think it’s fading… The last residue of the portal magic is also almost gone.”
"I knaa translation magic was too good ter be true anyways. I thought she had some kind of a jabber nut or summat.", the Smith said as he kindled the fire a bit more.
The Traveler sighed. It was much better when they all understood each other so clearly. Well, not like it was that bad now. Slowly, everyone went to sleep, except the new Link and the Traveler. He offered to be the first, as he wanted to check on you again. There was still one red potion in his bag, it wouldn't hurt to give it to you when you woke up. He showed it to Link, who was still by the tree, near where you were laying down.
“Know the red potion?” he asked, hoping he understood him.
“Yea,” he replied, “An potion ma a vydh kosel dhe heal 'er, right? "
The traveler blinked. This guy now sounded a bit more understandable. And the aura around you has decreased significantly.
“Great,” he smiled back at him. There was an awkward pause before Rulie decided to ask, to figure out what happened to you. He still didn’t understand much from what this guy was saying, but he could try.
“So she has… fairy enhancements, right?” he asked. The Champion nodded. Until you started shifting again, they tried to communicate somehow (more like tried to). What the traveler understood was that you were from “another place that is not Hyrule” and was able to confirm you were taken to four different Great Fairies. Well, whatever the place you are from, he could feel that you were different. Your ears were weird too, why were they round? He noticed it when he came to check on you. It was said that the ears of Hylians were long, so they could hear the messages from the heavens above.
Noticing you are awake, the Champion started talking with you, seeing you shift in the bedroll. The traveler had no idea what you were talking about, but he politely offered the red potion to you. He tried keeping his distance, to test something. He noticed that whenever he was near enough, whatever that Link or you spoke became complete gibberish again.
Huh.
When he moved a bit further, Link was understandable to an extent, but whatever you were saying was… something completely foreign. How were you even able to understand each other with him?! Meanwhile, he saw you drink and react to the potion, your face twisting like a LikeLike, it was hilarious. He couldn’t help himself but snicker. He came closer again, both to check on you, you seemed to be doing alright physically. I guess you thanked him, he supposed, nodded  and just waved a hand, trying to say ‘It’s nothing’. He didn’t want to speak, because if this happened because of a fairy enchantment combined with the portal residual magic, there was a good chance that your brain simply… overloaded. He almost opened his mouth and closed it again, and pointed towards his bedroll, and made the gesture for sleep. You said something else to him, but it didn’t only sound gibberish, it sounded otherworldly. He just smiled back at you, at least he was glad you looked fine.
It was time to wake the Rancher anyway, he really wanted to get back to sleep. He moved towards where he was sleeping and woke him up. The ranch hand grunted, but he ended up getting up and Rulie went back to sleep, getting all cozy in his bedroll.
Twilight took a deep breath and leaned against a tree trunk, as he waited for everyone to fall asleep. Sure, strange things kept happening to them all the time, they met other versions of themselves, for Ordona’s sake , but the fact that they were able to understand each other so clearly for a moment, and then the effect disappearing, was a new thing. A new Link… He wasn’t sure how to feel. To him, he wasn’t very new . He wasn’t able to reveal his Hylian form as he was sent to his Hyrule some years ago, and then he was suddenly pulled back as his adventure ended. What a wild young man he was. Would he even remember him, recognize him? He seemed also very protective of the woman he came with. Maybe they were lovers? He wasn’t sure. He saw them snuggling to each other on a single bed roll after some type of bickering, but that wasn’t enough proof for him anymore, especially after seeing how the hero of the Skies didn’t think much of stuff like that. ‘Beds are for sleeping, and we slept in them, so what?’ he would say. Ah, the rancher sighed.
After making sure everybody went to sleep, he shifted.
___
Wild was able to fall asleep so quickly, habits he supposed. That didn’t stop him from being a light sleeper though. He woke up to you shifting in the bedroll. He was still half asleep, as the haze of the sleep was still heavy on his eyelids. As you said something , he didn’t understand you at all. Was it too silent? No, he actually didn’t understand.
“What?” he said, as he saw your eyes were darting around, scanning the camp. Then you said something else. He raised an eyebrow, and repeated his question once again, with his sleepy hoarse voice. He was so tired. Maybe the lack of energy was just getting to him, or maybe you were also so tired you didn’t realize what you were saying. He asked if you were okay, that you sounded odd. He only heard you sigh and the stretch again, and then pulled you back to the bedroll. By Hylia’s name, he wasn’t able to get the scenes out of his head, scenes from only a night before. A red flush creeped into his cheeks as he pulled you back to himself once again, to the crook of his neck, and let the sleep embrace you both.
___
As the sunlight hit his eyes, Wild woke up. It was a challenge peeling you off of him, as you grasped him like how a little baby would grasp an adult’s pinkie. After he escaped your grip, he took his slate out once again, seeing he still had some ingredients left. Cooking was always a good outlet to not think about things for now, as they would probably drive him crazy as easily. As he lost himself in the holy act of cooking, the others also started to wake up, including you.
The teenager looked extremely energetic, as he was shouting “Guid mornin'” to everyone. Oh? That actually didn't sound so bad to his ears. The others also started to greet him back in mumbles.
“Gude mornin,” Wild said, not particularly caring whether or not they understood at this point.
“Goo' mornin” came from multiple Links.
The teenager put his hands to his waist as he looked quite surprised, he pointed at Wild.
“He disnae speak oor Hylian, how?!”
Wild was taken aback. Sure, he sounded funny but understood what he meant perfectly fine. It wasn’t the case last night.
“Hey, I do understan' 'ee!" he replied to the Sailor. With the rest of the group and the newfound realization, they started the chitter chatter right away. Apparently, it was the Rancher’s Hyrule.
Meanwhile, you also woke up, they noticed. You looked quite distressed, Wild started to worry a bit. You said something once again towards the Rancher, in a language Wild didn’t understand. Nobody understood it really. There was an awkward, stunning pause. You looked quite lost. The guy with one eye open pointed towards you as he spoke.
"An' 'er? She spoke when we fust met?"
“Ai dunt knaa, aa didn't understand her at nait either." replied the Healer. Traveler, they called him, Wild remarked to himself.
"Woht? But she cle'arly spoke when we met,” the Rancher said, pointing the question more towards him. Damn, all of these people spoke so funny. But then he stopped stirring the stew he was preparing, as he looked at you. You got up, and started slowly moving towards him, your steps unsure, your eyes filled with desperation.
“Link?” was the only word he understood from your inquisitive sentence. Wild had absolutely no idea what you just said. He gulped. He tried to open his mouth, but the only two words that came out were ‘what’ and ‘how’.
The Vet, just cursed under his breath. Honestly, he didn’t hear him not-curse so far, even though for some reason it was always the teenager that got scolded for it.
Then Wild looked at you once again. He saw the blood drain from your face, the slow descent into panic. It was subtle, anybody else would have thought you were just a little bit surprised. Your breathing was quick. Even the rancher could feel from a distance that your heart beat was off the charts.
Suddenly, you stumbled a little bit, trying to hold onto something, but he got you.
He always got you.
He held your hands as he made you sit on the floor again, he sat in front of you, he held your hands in his and gestured you to take deep breaths.
“Hey, I’m here,” he softly spoke. He counted together with you till you calmed down. Just like how you did it with him, whenever a memory came to haunt him.
He was just returning the favor.
_______
“We're gonna gan t'my place,” the ranch hand said decisively, as the group kept following his lead, he was just idly chatting with the Captain since he didn’t understand much from the magic stuff either. Meanwhile, Wild never left your side, even for a bit, even as he spoke to the others.
The Traveler, the Old Man along with the Veteran and the Smith, were discussing what they could do about your situation. Since now they could all communicate somehow, except you, Wild was able to explain to them what happened. How you were found, how you were taken to the four Great Fairies so you could learn the language faster.
"Wor did the fairies actually say they would dee?" asked Rulie once again, to clarify.
“They sez so she could slowly unnerstan' and graps and commun'cate, make it all unnerstood,” Wild replied. It was now becoming more clear to Rulie. There was no way you were from any of their worlds. He shared his theory with the rest of them.
"Wot do yer mean? I ain't technically from Hyrule either, y'know." said Sky.
Rulie explained that he thought you would most likely be coming from another dimension. Legend agreed, having been to different places during his time.
"The only toime Ah felt that kind of diff'rence from a person was when Ah was in Lorule... an' even then, it wasn't this strong."
Time was simply nodding, as he didn’t think he had much to add to the discussion. He had been to Termina, but at least it was still similar enough to Hyrule.
Wild couldn’t deny any of the statements they made. He felt like something was tugging at his chest.
"So wha', wha' happened to 'er, will she ever unnerstan' us again?" He was slightly frantic.
Rulie explained his theory that the Great Fairy magic most likely affected you fundamentally, since how you were simply another being , your brain wasn’t able to comprehend the voices produced by them, just as they were not able to understand anything you said when you spoke your language, whatever it was.
Of course, this was met with a question from both Four and Wild, then how was it fine until now?
“Simple,” the Traveler explained. "Until then, she only 'ad t' deal wi' one Hylian. Everybody spoke the same thing, an' prob'ly in 'er heed, it was a language she was fam'liar wi' that was just warped. Now... wi' all of us 'ere... An' wi' the portal..."
Right. They also had to explain to Wild that the magic from the portals that take them, might sometimes affect the environment, and the auras they have. Making them… feel worse. Interfering with their magical items. This time, it decided to interfere with her aura. And with everything combined…
"So you'm sayin' she short circuited?" Wild said. Well, nobody knew what short circuiting meant. He sighed. At least it seemed like Rulie and the Legend understood him, or what he meant.
"If ye mean she owerloaded, aye. An' now the enchantment's gannin'.” Rulie said. The Vet continued his sentence for him. “ Though at least, since she spent quite some time with ye, absorbing the land’s magic, she kan at least learn the language mannally,” a pause. “...probably."
"I'd rec'ommend a jabber nut, but not sure if it'd work. It's only for the minish..." the Smithy added. Wild felt really frustrated, but tried not to show it. The discussion went on. They decided to possibly consult the spirit the Rancher mentioned, when they made it to their destination. Wild was quite reluctant about it, but hey…
Seeing that the “big boys” were having a serious discussion he absolutely eavesdropped on, Wind decided to try something. He looked at you, and noticed how tall you are compared to most of them. Combined with the complicated discussion he just listened to, he just decided to try to make conversation with you, in his own way. Just then, he noticed a cloud between the sea of clouds. There was a specific one that really looked like his ship with Tetra.
“Woah, mad…” he said out loud.
Why not?
He took your hand to get your attention, and pointed towards it. “Cloud!” he shouted.
As you replied to him with words he cannot comprehend, you made the shape of the cloud with your hands, drawing it into the air.
“Yes! Cloud!” he repeated again.
Four and Wild were watching the exchange from behind as the rest of them continued their chatter. If you weren’t able to say a simple word, if you weren’t able to comprehend their lexicon now, it was going to get much more complicated.
“Cl-oud, clo-ud,” you said, a bit awkwardly, but you were able to say it. That’s what mattered. Unbeknownst to you, a lot of the Links sighed internally.
“Aye, noo say it a few mair times," Wind said smugly, and made you repeat the word at least five more times. Sadly, they weren’t able to play it in reverse. You weren’t able to teach the language you spoke to them for now, it seemed.
After a while, Four also joined your little game of teaching you little words, there was yet hope after all, in this sea of confusion.
Maybe it was your power of understanding what they said, would help them figure out why you got involved with them in the first place.
Sky: Kentish Time & Twilight: Suffolk Wild: Cornish, and then English with Cornish accent Four: Norfolk Wind: Scottish Legend & Hyrule: Geordie (Newcastle) (Except at the start) As always, happy to answer your questions (or in case you didn't understand a thing they said) :3

SEO vs. SEM
SEM translates to on line search results discount – together with, as it's besides that identified, appear marketing. Look up marketing is usually a pc marketing. From the technological view they are not distinct – SEO the truth is one-half associated with SEM:
SEO = producing all-natural potential customers coming from appear engines. SEM = producing all-natural and payed off of potential customers coming from appear engines.
Nowadays, which may be where considerations get yourself a tid little bit confusing. At the moment, enough individuals retain the services of SEM interchangeably by using PPC (which most people would work with above the up coming section). This idea seems to be tenderloin SEO. jujutsu kaisen 151, on what maki said
alright ive been forced to come back to this hell site to make this post because i cannot take this maki top energy slander
i want to talk about this panel here, which specifically i’ve seen these two variations of translations from (left is VIZ and right is TCB scans):
Tumblr media
while both of these translations are technically correct, the original japanese  says “抱いてやるよ” (daite yaru yo)
抱く (daku) technically means to hug, and it’s conjugated w/ やる (yaru) which means that the action is being done as a favor for someone. another way to conjugate this verb for a similar meaning is あげる (ageru), but yaru is less polite and more condescending (especially in this context). the tone of the sentence is very 上から目線 (“from a high perspective”), meaning that maki is definitely talking down (quite strongly) on naoya; and i think this does come through from both of the english translations pictured above.
but now the part that drove jp twt crazy.
while 抱く(daku) does technically mean hug/embrace/hold, it can also be understood in a sexual way: specifically, to top (i swear i am not making this up LOL) 抱く(daku) means you are topping, and 抱かれる (dakareru) means you are bottoming — so essentially what maki is saying can also be interpreted as  “i’ll top you (as a favor)”
now, i know this initially seems really out of place in english, but it actually makes a lot of sense given the history of their relationship and naoya’s personality in particular. we all know that naoya has been sexist af and spewing nonsense like women should always walk 3 steps behind men etc. so in some way, reverting that typical male/female dynamic is actually a really great taunt — it’s VERY insulting to naoya’s fragile masculinity lol some ppl have even gone as far as to guess that perhaps its a line that naoya/others have said to maki before (maybe under the context that she has no value except to serve men — but ofc this is all just speculation), and now maki is throwing it back right at him to, quite literally, establish dominance. bottom line is that I don’t think she meant it literally but the reversal of dynamic that the line implies seems pretty obvious and makes a lot of sense as a double meaning addition to the line.
i also saw some of jp twt talking about comparisons with this panel from the manga “kenya kagyou” (disclaimer: i’ve never read this manga; akutami gege references other works in jjk all the time so ppl were guessing this was the manga being referenced here). one character used the exact same form of “shiranui-gata” in sumo and he said “dakishimete yaru,” which usually means “hug tightly”; but here the play on words is instead on the verb “shimeru,” which can also mean to strangle.
Tumblr media
anyways, i guess what i’m trying to say is akutami gege could’ve kept this line/used similar variations of it to convey the same “i will hug you (threatening),” but instead chose to use “daite yaru yo.” this specific combination of words really is quite often sexual (i think a good comparison for the degree of sexual connotation is the phrase “netflix and chill” — where yes, it could also mean actually only netflix and chill, but most ppl, even if they dont mean it, are at least aware of the sexual connotation). gege has a history of playing with double meanings a lot (stuff like sukuna’s “魅せてみろ” or “去ね”), so do what you will with that info lol sumo is also a sport in which women are traditionally banned from competing in, so maki taking on this pose w/ the line fits well with the subverting gender roles theme that’s going on as a big “screw you” at naoya
in conclusion akutami gege said maki tops yall

Hello Slug! I hope you're doing well 🌻 Since I ship Samatoki and Jyuto I've always wondered about this one line in Bayside Smoking Blues which is "非常線を張り追いかける赤い目ライト". I don't know jp so I read a lot of fan tls. This line in particular is tld quite differently depending on the person. I'd love to hear your take on it, if you're fine with it of course. If it really is about Samatoki's eyes I'm going to go 🐒 Thank you!
This is a super interesting question. Thanks! Before we take a look at this line itself, let's talk theory for a minute. Song lyrics and poetry often present a unique challenge with atypical grammar and figurative language. As translators read the original line in the source text, they form their own interpretations of what this figurative language means, but when it comes time to write this in the target text, they're faced with a conundrum. Should they try to push their interpretation, or should they leave the translation more open-ended for the audience to form their own interpretations? (And, in that latter case, does the audience have enough information to inform interpretations that the author was likely to have intended? Does the author's intent even matter?) Then, the translator also has to consider other factors like the purpose and style of their overall translation. Does it have to rhyme? Should it have rhythm? My take on a line would be affected by all these questions, but since the purpose of this particular translation seems to be sharing what I think this figurative language means, let's go with that! Let's start by giving you the opportunity to interpret the source text in more or less the same fashion I'm receiving it in. Fairly literally, this line reads as:
Throwing up a cordon, red eye lights in pursuit
Like I mentioned up above, song lyrics use irregular grammar which I often find challenging to parse, being a non-native speaker. With that being said, it is my understanding that the "red eye light[s]" is one term that is pursuing something else. Likewise, it makes the most sense to me to understand the cordon part as a separate thought. Right off the bat, my first impression is that it sounds very cop-ish, as if Juuto is saying, "Let's put up a cordon and then follow [criminals, I guess] with the flashing red lights on our cop cars." However, that "red eye" part is peculiar. I can see why people are assuming this relates to Samatoki. It's time to do some digging. I Googled and DuckDuckGo'ed that, since I've never heard that turn of phrase before, and it looks like it's unique to Hypmic. I also couldn't find any similar phrases close enough to indicate that there's a pun, wordplay, or reference going on, although it's always completely possible something slipped my radar. In situations like this, where Hypmic makes something up and I'm not sure what to think about it, I go to look and see what the Japanese fans have to say. It's not that they're necessarily more right than any other set of fans, but they have the obvious advantage of being the target audience and not having a language barrier. I looked up "赤い目ライト" on Twitter and found that there's not a consensus on this in the Japanese fandom either. A few people have gone your route and suggested that it refers to Samatoki, but more people think it refers to the lights on a cop car. Interestingly, though, one other explanation appears with great frequency - it's a sign of his rabbit-ness. ... What? Apparently (I did not know this until I looked into it), there exist several Japanese breeds of white rabbits with red eyes so much that the general population associates rabbits with that image. (There are, of course, rabbits with other eye colors too, but they're not cultural icons. Think of the idea of rabbits eating carrots. Sure, rabbits eat lots of vegetables in real life, but we associate rabbits and carrots anyway.) Considering that last bit, my final takeaway from this line is that it's probably supposed to be talking about his police work but with a fun rabbit twist. However, figurative language can be interpreted in lots of ways! If you want to think of it as Samatoki, then you have every right to do so. This was a ton of fun to look into, so thanks for the ask!

TTFeb: Way too many words on translation
nnozomi prompted: Anything to do with translation issues (cnovel or otherwise) I think that translation requires choices, so any good translation must by nature engage with its choices. Not /defend/ exactly, but persuade that those choices are shedding light upon its source. There's two 'choices' that I'm interested in discussing (today) (lol): foreignization (wait, don't go away!) and Nachdichtung and other transformations.
Caveats: I have many translation thoughts hahahaha. They are still developing! So I have to say, because this is a topic on which I am still actively reading theory and forming opinions, that these are especially subject to growth. Most of these thoughts are in response to Chinese translations; through poetry club, I've been exposed to a great variety (not exhaustive in any way) of the schools of thought on Chinese poetry translation in particular. And since I am (shockingly???) somewhat literate in Chinese now, it's easier for me to think about. However, on balance, most of the words of translation that I've read in my life are not Chinese, because look, it's going to take a lot of words to beat the sheer length of Russian novels, and there's just /so much/ of the literary canon that is translated from German, French, Spanish etc etc etc. (I've seen people saying that English doesn't have a good history of translation, and I admit to bafflement. Even if you ignore all the new stuff coming out and topping bestsellers lists, we read quite a lot of works in translation in school?) Foreignization: "The project of writing translations that preserve in the the way they sound some trace of the work's "authentic foreignness" is really applicable only when the original is not very foreign at all. [...] In order to even notice that this sentence from German a foreignizing translation is have you to know that in German subordinate clauses at the end their verbs put. Otherwise it is comical, clumsy, nonsensical, and so forth--not "German" at all." David Bellos, Is That a Fish in Your Ear. The debates over foreignization and localization are... endless. So many books and articles and journals. Often it seems like it's something that people /feel/ is correct and come up with explanations to justify why their stance is correct. I will now proceed to explain to you why my stance is clearly the correct one*. *This is a joke; I understand why people would be further towards either end of the spectrum than me. I think that a work should clearly define its intended audience and write to that. An audience for translated webnovels not only can tolerate higher levels of 'keikaku means plan', it WANTS that. Bellos writes that 19th century translators of French into English would often do the same because educated people were expected to know some French, and so they would feel satisfied at reading something that felt like they were reading a novel in French. Similarly, Wilt Idema writes in Purpose and Form that his translations of Chinese poetry would be criticized for their lack of chinoiserie. And on and on, many examples of how this feeling of 'ah, I'm reading a foreign work' is desirable by certain audiences, once the audience has been raised to expect a certain 'authentic foreigness'. So, the same feeling that a contemporary cnovel reader feels at recognizing words in pinyin. But tone is an essential part of the source, and using what parses as awkward phrasing in English to try and convey a sense of the original language just completely loses that aspect. Instead of words dancing on the page, they are-- well, the Bellos quote above makes me frantically rearrange, but when the source is in Chinese, my brain instinctively tries to translate it back into Chinese. In either case, you've lost the original tone, for something different. That's not necessarily bad-- this is where I diverge from my more die hard 'natural English or bust' friends, because I can enjoy a very deliberate, carefully done translation that carries over an unfamiliar cadence. But to convey that, you've made a choice to add in something new, so long as the source was not meant to feel foreign at all. (Browulf, the Headley translation of Beowulf, remains my favorite, ambitious effort to capture the original tone of a work. Often, of course, other translations capture the tone in a more understated and quiet way, but Browulf sure does make an impression haha.) I do feel very strongly about when it IS bad though. This comes directly from my experiences as an Asian American and so I understand that other people won't feel this quite as deeply as me! But in the US, 'bad at English' is such a common, strong racist stereotype that to present bad wording as if it were a polished, elegant, faithful interpretation of a Chinese work really disturbs me. So for instance, in the official MDZS translation, when the original source reads smoothly and like a light, casual work, turning it into something that reads very clumsily with invented classist dialect markers is way too far in that direction for my taste. Essentially, I need my foreignization to walk a tight balance of faithfulness to the original, and falling in the direction of 'too much' is way more jarring than playing it safe with idiomatic English. Nachdichtung and other transformations: When I was discussing how the arguments against bridge translations (by which I mean, the derogatory way that it was described as someone first rendering the text in a plainer English and someone else taking that and prettying it up, which bears little resemblance to the usual teamwork that occurs) make it sound like a transformative work, x_los  remembered a footnote from Chinese Poetry and Translation that was very relevant: "Discussions of translations of poetry in English and Dutch are hampered by the absence of the German distinction between Nachdichtung and Übersetzung (translation that follows the source text, as distinct from creative rewriting)." This was in the same Idema essay I mentioned earlier. Looking up Nachdichtung online leads to this blog post, which defines it as "a piece of poetry that tries to re-create the spirit in which another piece of poetry was written and its effect on the reader without being literal about it—what's more important is that the new piece is a successful piece of poetry in its own right while staying "true" to the original in a deeper sense." After that conversation, there was a minor twitter storm over a translator who localized Japanese romance games to English and the sometimes extreme changes required to convey the right tone. That really made me think about how much change might be required to convey the spirit of a work. A subtly separate argument from localization, because localized translation is still carries an expectation of a literal translation, but perhaps there ought to be a space for something more /transformative/. Of course, this conversation is going to have to engage in some rather controversial translations as a result. I was thinking of two: the Coleman Barks translations of Rumi and Ursula K. Le Guin's Tao Te Ching rendition. The Coleman Barks translations hugely popularized Rumi, but Barks doesn't know Persian or Arabic. This might not necessarily have led to backlash, except his translations secularize and erase the Islamic context of Rumi's works. (More on that history.) So that's pretty colonialist! Not a good look! Those translations clearly emotionally affected many though, so where is its place? Is it on any level true to the original and so a Nachdichtung? Ought it be considered a transformative work, merely inspired by the previous translations? There's a spectrum that seems to look like literal faithfulness -> spiritual faithfulness -> transformative. Taoism deeply influenced Le Guin, to the point where e.g. reviews that get all confused over the morals of Omelas and don't mention Taoism at all seem to be rather bad at reading Le Guin. Like Barks, she knew no Chinese, but she also only ever called it an interpretation, a rendition of the Tao Te Ching, explicitly not a translation. And so, having spent a lifetime thinking deeply about Taoism, writing and considering Taoist concepts, and working with experts in Classical Chinese, she produced a work that tried to capture the beauty of the Tao Te Ching. Whether or not she succeeded is beyond the scope of this post, but I think it would be a mistake to dismiss attempts like this out of hand. Does a lifetime of contemplation really not add anything to the conversation around this work? That feels very culturally essentialist. Anyway! So many good translations giving new insight to works! Also many bad translations trying to obscure parts of works that they don't like! But how else can we communicate across languages and cultures and time but translation? Back to masterlist

Woo Do Hwan x GQ Korea
Before reading, bear in mind that I used Google Page Translate for this one so its quite messy at points. Many things are reflected in GQ Woo Do-hwan's eyes. Do you like your own eyes? DH Yes, I like it. It seems to be an eye that can look bright and dark and then bright again, depending on the situation. As an actor, I think that's a great advantage. GQ Woo Do-hwan's face is definitely one of the most impressive masks, but I once said that the phrase “looks like a neighborhood hyung” is the most pleasant. DH I want to be friendly. I want him to be seen as a friendly person, as is often the case in the neighborhood. Sang-i hyung, who we are filming together these days, suddenly did this yesterday. “Dohwan-ah, I’ve only seen you for a month, but you definitely have a humanity.” GQ Suddenly, human beauty? Before DH hyung knew me, he must have had a preconceived notion that he was a cold and sensitive person just looking at my appearance. You must have felt it after being close for about a month, right? Oh, and he said he was just a younger brother who was running around in the neighborhood. (Smile) GQ As soon as he was discharged from the military, he started filming <Hounding Dogs>, right? It's a reunion with director Kim Joo-hwan, who worked on <The Lion>. Is it true that you said you didn't even look at the script? DH That's right. Joo Hwan-yi hyung is a person I am thankful for who has been a great strength to me during a difficult time. 'Really, was this work done together?' He is the person who made me realize that again on set. At that time, hyung wasn't trying to tell me anything in particular, but the timing was right. Our meeting at that time left a very good impression on me. From the next time on, if it's a project that hyung is doing, he said he would do it unconditionally even if he didn't read the script. But the words have really become seeds. What can I do? I have to keep the words I spit. GQ Oops, didn't you want to? A moment in the beginning of DH . (Smile) Because we started without a standard that we could do well or not. GQ What is that standard? DH I think it comes from how much you change me. If you do a lot of self-replication, you can do it comfortably. It's my first project after being discharged, so I thought I might have to show what I'm good at. <Hounding Dogs> is based on a webtoon, but the content is very different from the original. When you get hurt and taste the bitter taste of the world, until then, the characters I've played have usually 'blackened' or rebelled. The Gunwoo I'm in charge of this time is different. I have a good heart and a good heart to grow and overcome adversity. Hey, is this guy here thinking like this and acting like this? When several question marks appear, I am lost in the thought of where to start again. GQ Dohwan is an actor famous for thinking a lot. What kind of kid was he when he was young? DH was really stubborn. He had to do what he wanted to do, and he had a lot of questions. In my spare time, I usually lay down in the park, discussing what life is like, and thinking about why we are here. Why did he have so much free time back then? (Laughs) He didn’t have a clear dream, but he wanted a stable life. GQ Did you feel that something was unstable? DH Conditionally there was nothing unstable. The family has always been harmonious. Still, he wanted to be stable. Until your 20s. But after he went to the military, he didn't want to be stable anymore, that kind of feeling came to mind. I was surprised at myself. Is it because it feels like you have crossed one head of the GQ army? DH There was such a fear that one day, the time would come when I had to take a break and let go of what I was holding on to, so I would have to hold on to it until then. I think it was the military. After I finished my military service, I felt that it would be good to take on more challenges now. keep going, keep going. I wondered how far I could go. What was your biggest thought in the GQ army? DH I need to grind my bones, I need to grind my teeth. with a more desperate heart. At the same time, I was also convinced that the things I had cherished so far were really precious. GQ You must have thought a lot about ‘Who am I? DH I felt that I was a really weak person. Cold when it's cold and hot when it's hot... It was nice to have time to realize my weakness. to be humble again. GQ So, did you want to become stronger? DH is unconditional! I always promised myself that I would get stronger and endure this time well. GQ Did you keep a diary every day in the military? DH Yes, I keep my notebook in my pocket and take it out whenever I think of it. GQ Every day must be the same, but how different were the contents of the diary? DH Even if it is a repetitive daily life, what I feel in it is different every day. As an actor is a job where I work all night and live without commuting time, there are days when the regular life in the military feels so comfortable and especially fun, and on the contrary, there are days when I find myself in a dilemma because I do not have the freedom. Every day, every day was different. Does writing a GQ diary every day make any difference, even if it’s just a small swipe? DH It used to be like that. Now, it's just a habit rather than having any influence on me. Sometimes I write down points that I'm embarrassed to tell someone, and sometimes I have regrets and regrets about my own 'foolishness'. When you are exhausted and tired, there are moments when you think of yourself as selfish. Each time, it is a time to make up our minds to take care of the people next to us a little more. GQ Are you honest with yourself? DH (without hesitation) Yes, for myself. GQ Do you not turn away from some emotion that deceives yourself or raises your head abruptly? DH I think I keep a diary so I don't hide it. To stop the bad sounds inside me. Of course it sounds natural, but you shouldn't hear the same sound tomorrow. I was wondering if that would enable me to live a better life as the person I was looking for. GQ What kind of person do you want to live as? DH A person who always has a pretty heart. I have to say that I am a person with a relaxed mind. To have a relaxed mind, you need to broaden your horizons, and to do that, you need to put in more effort and have confidence. So many things have to follow. In an interview with GQ , the words "I couldn't dream of acting earlier was because I wanted to start with confidence in myself." What assurances did you need at the time? DH Courage. Before that, I was afraid of how the people around me would react when I said, “I will learn.” It took courage to do no damage no matter what the people around me say. The energy you desperately want. This is similar to the feeling of love. Lovers are a universe of their own, and if you love each other firmly, it doesn't matter what the people around you say. I think it took a while before I could fall in love with acting like that. Of course, there are times when I hate this job, but in the end I am a person who cannot live without it. We broke up for a year and a half, but it still wouldn't work. GQ You said that you do your work as if you love it. What kind of style do you have when you love? DH The way he's done it so far is devoted and there's only two love in the world. I feel a lot of happiness in giving. I firmly believed that it was true, but even then, parting came to me. So it's getting harder. Of course, wheat sugar is still not good. GQ Is work and love that straight forward? DH is always straight. But I don't know if work loves me. GQ Good work and meeting good people is proof that you are loved. DH Being with good people is the most important thing to me. You spend countless more hours with the staff on set than the compressed hours reflected in the broadcast. It should be the most enjoyable time. In the end, that synergy leads to good works. GQ How does a loving heart change Woo Do-hwan? DH It makes you work harder for your opponent so you don't look elsewhere. Let our love be a better love. It takes effort and sacrifice. GQ When is the most exciting moment with the acting you love so much? DH Comes from improvisation on site. I feel euphoric when talking with the staff and looking for something better, when they immediately like it. The staff is the primary audience. It's not a moment that comes every day. My attitude to the field has also changed. Before, I made plans for both gestures and gazes, but now I don't plan anything other than a big frame. Each director has a different opinion, and everything changes on set anyway. The moment I thought that I had to do something, a lot of energy went into it. It's a big change for a GQ actor. Did you have a chance? DH During the filming of <Save Me>. At the scene, the director ordered one additional line. “It is my responsibility today to take out the garbage. What are you doing, aren't you coming?" But the director said that the line was the best. I felt once again that the most important thing is to say these words for the first time today, as if it were the first time I spit them out in the field. GQ Like the first words you spit out. By the way, do you remember when you said you wanted to be the boss of a ramen restaurant someday? DH It's changed. As the owner of the bakery. (Smiling round and round) One day, the words Ssangbi-eup, 'a', and Lee Eung, written on the signboard, came together and looked pretty. Bread can be given as a gift, but ramen cannot be taken home and eaten. When I was discharged from the military, I decided to learn how to make pastry and make a gift to people. I have to do this when I'm done with this work. GQ It's hard to imagine, but on the other hand, are you looking forward to it?DH I'm afraid. How messy the house will be... If you do, you're the type to do it right.

Japanese vs. English Dabi A 293 Comparison
Chapter 293 gave us another great speech by Dabi, filled with all kinds of information. Similar to my post for the previous chapter, the official translation for chapter 293 has, unfortunately, once again made some changes in regards to Dabi’s speech due to its bias that I would like to share and explain here to give a better understanding of Dabi’s actual character rather than just leaving it at his American version.
Because Dabi said so much in this chapter and we will be comparing the panels from the Japanese version and the official English translation and taking apart the Japanese phrases, the rest of the post is under the cut (this post may or may not be just below 6k words)
The interaction begins with a short exchange between Dabi and Shouto as the former is hugging his younger brother mid-air while the others are still on the ground trying to take down Machia. In the official translation, Dabi begins by pointing this situation out to Shouto.
Tumblr media
The two panels aren’t too different from the Japanese version, but this is another case of lost nuance. So here’s the original for comparison:
Tumblr media
The speech bubbles read:
「向こうは楽しそうだなァ」
「可哀想になァ」
「おまえはこんなに辛いのに」
Breaking down the first line we get
「向こう ; mukou」-> other side; other party
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「楽しそう ; tanoshisou 」-> looks fun
「だ ; da 」-> casual form of です (desu); be; is
「なァ ; naa 」-> sentence ending particle; expresses emotion/sentiment
= “The others seem to have fun, huh?”
Then we have the second line:
「可哀想に ; kawaisou ni 」-> pitiable; poor (interjection)
「なァ ; naa 」-> sentence ending particle; expresses emotion/sentiment
= “Poor thing, huh?”
And the third line:
「おまえ ; omae 」-> you
「は ; wa」-> topic marker particle
「こんなに ; konnani 」-> so; like this
「辛い ; tsurai 」-> bitter; painful; heart-breaking
「のに ; noni」-> even though
= “Even though it’s so painful for you.”
Someone made a post a few days ago where they made an interesting note about this part, specifically that last line, that I think is worth mentioning here: this situation is Dabi comparing his own past to Shouto’s present. Touya was in pain for so long until he burned to death because no one helped him (and by that I mean an adult that could’ve actually helped him and not his younger siblings). Similarly, Shouto has been in pain for so long and now that it’s especially obvious to those around him as he is in the process of being burned, no one is helping him and instead, they continue fighting each other. And while Dabi doesn’t know the extent of this, it’s true that Shouto has been vocal about his family’s circumstances and yet no one’s ever done anything about it. So while Dabi at this moment is primarily referring to the fact that in this very instant no one is immediately by Shouto’s side to save him, it’s also unintentionally pointing out how no one in charge ever looked at the teenager with a huge scar on his face who openly hates his father so much and thought to maybe at least ask him about it.
You can argue that that is interpreting too much because “Dabi doesn’t care about him” - but I think that Dabi not knowing enough about Shouto and seeing him as nothing but “Endeavor’s doll” and Dabi recognizing that Shouto is in a similarly bad situation as Dabi are two statements that can coexist, especially since he is right in saying that right there no one is helping Shouto. And, again, based on his broadcast and how much his speech has changed to be more polite and humble in contrast to his usual direct, rough ways, it’s important to recognize that Dabi has an understanding of people (and how to get to them).
So while his mind might be too focused on his hatred for Endeavor, there might also still be that ability to acknowledge that those around him are hurting, too. This is an important problem within the fandom (and outside of it) as far as vocabulary goes - a lot of people throw around the word empathy and how awful it is when someone lacks it. But empathy is the ability to feel someone else’s emotions. And you don’t need to actually feel what they are feeling in order to recognize their emotions, which is far more important. This understanding of someone else’s emotions is sympathy. Compassion, on the other hand, is not just understanding someone’s emotions, but also trying to alleviate someone’s negative emotions. So even if Dabi doesn’t care about people, he can still recognize when someone is in pain.
After this, we get Shouto’s only line of that chapter, and as much as I wished he was given more lines, this one’s so good, it’s okay there isn’t more:
Tumblr media
Above you can see the English translation having Shouto say “But... you’re... burning up... too!”
For comparison, here is this same part in Japanese:
Tumblr media
Starting with Shouto’s line, we got「てめェ。。。こそ。。。体が。。。焦げて。。。!」
This line already broke itself apart! How nice.
「てめェ ; temee 」-> you
「こそ ; koso 」-> for sure; emphasizes preceding word
「体 ; karada 」-> body
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「焦げて ; kogete 」-> to burn; to get burned (the dictionary form of this is 「焦げる」(kongeru), the te-form is used here to leave the sentence trailing)
= “YOUR body... for sure… will… get burned…!”
The reason I’m saying this line is so important is the emphasis on the “you” part through the usage of koso. The general content of the sentence already tells us this, but that emphasizing nuance doesn’t exist in English (unless you bold, italicize, and underline it). The line is important because we’re shown someone who is in the process of being burned alive, and yet his worry is on the person trying to kill him rather than anything else. He isn’t trying to argue with him, isn’t trying to protect himself - he’s simply saying: this is hurting you. It’s interesting because in the eyes of those around him, Shouto is the one hurting the most. But to him, it’s Touya who is hurting the most. To him, this isn’t the hero-to-be Shouto being fought by the villain Dabi. This is big bro Touya hurting himself for the sake of getting at their awful dad. And little bro Shouto is only thinking about his big bro.
Now for Dabi’s response, we get the line that particularly stuck out to me as far as the English translation goes: “Seriously, it’s great that you were raised with love.” What? If you read the fan translation, you might remember this line as “You’ve grown up to be so considerate - I’m happy for you little bro” - so which one is more correct? If you guessed the fan translation then, unfortunately, you are correct!
The Japanese line reads 「優しく育って嬉しいよ」
「優しく ; yasashiku 」-> ; tender; gentle; kind (adverbial form of「優しい」(yasashii))
「育って ; sodatte 」-> to be raised; to grow up; (te-form of「育つ」to indicate reason & means (this part results in the second part of the sentence))
「嬉しい ; ureshii 」-> happy; glad
「よ ; yo 」-> sentence ending particle; shows emphasis
= “I am glad because you grew up kindly”
First of all, an adverb is nothing other than an adjective that is directly affecting/describing the verb it precedes. So to understand that in reference to this sentence, you can ask the question “how was he raised?” - with the response being “kindly.” If you wanted to say “raised with kindness” on the other hand, you would have to turn the adjective into a noun. That part of the phrase would then be 「優しさで育って」As you can see, that’s not what it says in the original version.
More importantly, the word “love” is not part of this, so I don’t know why that word is used here. It really gives off a wrong understanding of what is actually being said here. The official translation makes it sound like Dabi is saying “I’m glad you were raised with love, while I wasn’t” sort of like a complaint?
We still don’t know exactly what Touya’s upbringing was like, but we do know that things gradually got worse over time, so with the assumption that he was raised in a more positive (not good, just better in comparison) environment than Shouto, the English statement then doesn’t make sense since he was “loved” too for a long time.
Besides, he is saying that in direct response to Shouto displaying his worry for Dabi, which says nothing about how he was raised but everything about what kind of person he is (a kind one).
Furthermore, it leaves out the part where Dabi says he’s happy about this. Instead, he just says “it’s great” - which is more something used when you can acknowledge a situation being good for someone else, even though you don’t have any particular feeling about it. It’s very objective, yet in the original, he is stating his emotions with this.
The official translation, in my opinion, just ends up turning the two against each other (more specifically turning Dabi against Shouto), when in reality, Dabi is happy that Shouto shows compassion for him here, despite Dabi currently trying to kill him. In other words, he is surprised by Shouto’s concern for him and happy to be proven wrong about him.
Next, we got「俺は大丈夫今とても幸せだから。」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「大丈夫 ; daijoubu 」-> alright
「今 ; ima 」-> now
「とても ; totemo 」-> very
「幸せ ; shiawase 」-> happy
「だから ; dakara 」-> because (indicates a reason for something)
= “I’m alright, I’m really happy now, so...”
There are two things to note here in relation to the previous phrase. First of all, notice how both phrases include the word happy. In the first phrase, the Japanese word is ureshii, whereas in this phrase it’s shiawase. Once again, this is a question of nuance.
Ureshii is more of an immediate feeling that you feel in that exact moment. It’s a feeling that isn’t going to last forever (for example the joy you feel when you receive a gift).
Shiawase, on the other hand, is a long-term happiness.
The way to interpret why he is using both these terms is that he uses ureshii as his reaction to Shouto showing that he cares. He most likely didn’t anticipate for Shouto to say something like that, so signaling his concern for Dabi made the latter feel joy in that very moment.
So what about the happiness he talks about in the second phrase, how is it different from the first one? Clearly, Dabi is not exactly someone you would describe as happy when looking at the overall picture. I think one possible explanation as to what the shiawase here refers to is that Dabi has accepted his situation. While it wouldn’t be accurate to describe his state as one of having moved on from the past - clearly - at the very least, through admitting to his past and having distanced himself from that dark place, he has been able to now be in a better situation, where he is allowed to just live rather than trying to prove himself to someone day after day.
The second thing to note is that you might be wondering why I ended the sentence with “...” when the official translation is “I’m fine, because I’m really happy right now.”
Well, it’s kind of an odd sentence, isn’t it? The sentence as it is right there is just giving us a reason. But a reason for what? In Japanese, it’s okay to omit the main clause (the phrase that would follow after this to explain what you just gave a reason for) when it’s obvious what you’re talking about.
This confused me for a little bit until I thought about what sentence came before this one. Right before this Dabi says “I’m glad you were raised kindly.” The sentence we’re looking at right now is an extension of that. And what came before that sentence?
Shouto saying: “Your body will burn too.”
See what I’m getting at?
As explained before, Shouto is essentially telling Dabi “I know you want to kill me, but this is going to kill you.” Now if you add Dabi’s two phrases to that, you get his response as “I’m glad that you’re so considerate. That makes me really happy, so it’s alright if I die.”
Many people have pointed out before that Dabi doesn’t care about whether or not he will make it out alive and this is essentially him confirming just that. His only goal is to ruin Endeavor and knowing he is doing that is enough for him to accept death.
He then continues to explain that joy of his with the next sentence:「見ろよあの顔」
「見ろ」-> look (volitional form)
「よ」-> adds extra emphasis after volitional form
「あの」-> that
「顔」-> face
= “LOOK at that face!”
With his goal being all about destroying Endeavor, seeing this man look so defeated right there is the first proof for Dabi that his plan has worked out. While he doesn’t know yet what the actual consequences for Endeavor are going to be after this, he certainly has damaged him.
The next line reads:「最高傑作のお人形が失敗作の火力に負けて死にそうだってのに。。。!」
「最高傑作 ; saikoukessaku 」-> masterpiece
「の ; no 」-> hierarchy particle (the word before is the general noun, the word after the specific noun)
「お人形 ; oningyou 」-> doll
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「失敗作 ; shippaisaku 」-> failed creative work
「の ; no 」-> particle to indicate possession, works like an apostrophe
「火力 ; karyoku 」-> firepower
「に ; ni 」-> indirect object marker
「負けて ; makete 」-> being defeated (te-form because another verb follows)
「死に ; shini 」-> going to die
「そうだって ; soudatte 」-> I’m saying it’s so
「のに ; noni 」-> shows disappointment (“If only that weren’t the case”)
= “I say it’s a shame that the masterpiece doll is about to be defeated and die by the firepower of the failed creative work.”
A lot of people take issue with Dabi yet again referring to Shouto as a “doll” here. Obviously, that isn’t a nice thing to say, but please keep in mind that Dabi doesn’t really know Shouto and with that also doesn’t know how Shouto feels about Endeavor. All Dabi sees is Shouto being a hero-to-be, just like Endeavor has planned. Keep in mind that Dabi used to be in Shouto’s shoes, which makes looking at Shouto be like looking in a mirror and seeing young Touya trying so hard to be what his father expects of him, yet failing over and over again. They were both born for that selfish purpose. They were never born to be people, but only born to be what their father needs them to be. And now that Dabi has broken free from that role, it’s natural for him to describe Shouto’s position as such to emphasize it in case the others haven’t understood that this is the reason for their existence and them being right there in that exact moment.
The final part says「グプっ。。。なァ見ろって!壊れちまってるよ!!ははは!!」
「グプっ ; gupuu 」-> special effects sound (I will explain this one in a second)
「なァ ; naa 」-> when placed at the start of a sentence it’s an attention seeker, kind of like a “hey!”
「見ろ ; miro」-> look (volitional)
「って ; tte 」-> to say (in casual conversation this can be used to repeat what one has just said to stress one’s own quote; can show frustration)
「壊れちまってる ; kowarechimatteru」-> be broken (unintentionally; regretfully)
「よ ; yo 」-> sentence ending particle to show emphasis
「ははは ; hahaha 」-> laughing sound
= “Hey, I said LOOK! He is completely broken, hahaha!”
As mentioned in the translation comparison for the last chapter, the chimatteru indicates that the verb it attaches to has happened unintentionally or has yielded regrettable results. We know that it is Dabi’s intention to hurt Endeavor - so him being broken is neither unintentional nor is it regrettable to Dabi.
So in this case it’s not so much about how Dabi feels. Instead, it’s probably more fitting to say that it’s about Endeavor. This situation has broken Endeavor (which is regretful), even though it had never occurred to him that the past could come back to haunt him (he has not intended for this to happen).
[edit because someone pointed out that (as mentioned for the 292 comparison) chimatteru can also be used to indicate something has been done completely, so in this case he is saying Endeavor is completely broken]
Now for the part that I neglected before: the special effects sound gupuu. The reason I have been holding off an explanation is simply that it’s not necessarily that important for the sentence, however, when I looked this up this was the result:
Tumblr media
Yes, you’re reading that correctly: *slurp*
I had a good laugh about that. The holy trinity of the slurping brothers is complete (albeit Dabi doesn’t have the noodles to go with it)
Anyway, back to the serious stuff!
Tumblr media
Next, we get this big panel of Dabi with the three speech bubbles. Notice that there are several ha to indicate that he is laughing.
Tumblr media
The speech bubbles all put together read:「焦凍!!俺の炎でおまえが焼けたらお父さんはどんな顔を見せてくれるかなァ!?」
「焦凍 ; shouto 」-> Shouto
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「の ; no 」-> particle to indicate possession, works like an apostrophe
「炎 ; honoo 」-> flames
「で ; de 」-> by
「おまえ ; omae 」-> you
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「焼け ; yake 」-> to burn
「たら ; tara 」-> when (focuses on the results that can come from this first part)
「お父さん ; otousan 」-> dad
「は ; wa 」-> object marker particle
「どんな ; donna 」-> what kind of
「顔 ; kao 」-> face
「を ; wo 」-> direct object marker particle
「見せて ; misete」-> to show (te-form to connect to the next part)
「くれる ; kureru」-> something was done for the speaker (being shown)
「かなァ ; kanaa 」-> I wonder
= “I wonder what kind of face dad will show me, when you get burned by my flames, Shouto!?”
The official translation added the “burn you to ash” part, which just adds more harshness to this than there already is. I’m not exactly opposed to that as I do recognize that he is being harsh here, however, this overall theme of adding words to make the villains sound harsher is just not what a translator is supposed to do so it is important to point it out.
Also notice the kureru, which is used when something was given to or done for the listener (i.e. a favor). Previously, Shouto has pointed out that Dabi would not survive his attempt at burning Shouto, either, and yet here he is wondering specifically what face Endeavor will show him. He isn’t just wondering what face this man will make, but what his reaction would be that his own failure has killed his masterpiece.
Tumblr media
After Deku interferes we get this panel of Dabi and this is where the conversation between him and Shouto ends and his speech to Deku starts.
Tumblr media
The Japanese version essentially says the same as the translation:「他所の家に首突っ込むなよ!」
「他所」-> another place; outside (one’s family or group)
「の」-> particle to indicate possession, works like an apostrophe
「家」-> family
「に」-> in
「首突っ込む」-> expression to poke one’s nose into another’s affair; lit.: “to thrust one’s neck into something”
「な」-> sentence ending particle; expresses emotion/sentiment
「よ」-> sentence ending particle; shows emphasis
= “Don’t stick your neck (nose) into other people’s family!”
After this, we get the part where Deku gives his speech with the “And guess what?! You’re not Endeavor!” part that was supposed to… reach what exactly?
Tumblr media
Someone pointed out that this wasn’t supposed to be an “It’s your power!” 2.0 speech, because with Shouto, Deku wanted to get to him and help him. With Dabi, on the other hand, he is saying (and he literally is saying this) that Endeavor is trying to be better. And Dabi not being Endeavor means that Dabi is not trying to be better. That, in turn, means that Deku is watching this Endeavor, the one that is trying to be better, but someone like Dabi who isn’t trying isn’t something worth watching.
Anyway, regardless of what the point of that phrase was, Dabi’s reaction is mocking this obvious statement
Tumblr media
The Japanese line says「はははそんな事が誰でもわかる!!」
「ははは ; hahaha 」-> laughing
「そんな ; sonna 」-> such
「事 ; koto 」-> thing
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「誰でも ; daredemo 」-> anyone
「わかる ; wakaru」-> to understand
= “Hahaha, anyone understands such a thing!”
Tumblr media
Continued by this part.
Tumblr media
The first line here says「でも俺はかわいそうな人間だろ!?」
「でも ; demo 」-> but
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「かわいそうな ; kawaisou na 」-> pitiable; poor
「人間 ; ningen 」-> human
「だろ ; daro 」-> don’t you think?
= “But I am a pitiable human, don’t you think!?”
What’s interesting to note about this line is the use of ningen. Normally, you would more likely use the word「人」(hito), meaning person, when you put another word in front of it. After all, when you talk about another person (much like I am using the word right now) it’s obvious they are human, so you wouldn’t need to use the word human.
With that, Dabi specifically using the word human here is done in order to humanize himself to Deku. Not only is he asking “hey, don’t you pity me at least a little?” but rather he is saying: “I get that you think I’m just some low-life villain, but I am a human being with valid feelings, so don’t just ignore them because you don’t see me trying.”
Again - Dabi chooses his words carefully and this is no exception.
If you paid extra close attention, you might have noticed that the word kawaisou gets used again. But did you spot the difference? While in the first example the word is written in kanji as 「可哀想」now it’s completely written in hiragana. Why is that? You might wonder, and I did too. Keep in mind that the first time the word gets used here (written in kanji), Dabi is referring to Shouto. This time (written in hiragana) he is referring to himself. Kanji are generally used because it makes texts easier to read since there are no spaces in Japanese. Much like the rest of us, Japanese people are also born with zero kanji knowledge and learn about them as they grow up. Because of this, books for children tend to just be in hiragana (the letter Kota writes to Deku thanking him for having saved him is also written in just hiragana) so they can easily read them. With that, a text in all hiragana gives off a more childish, cute, innocent kinda feel.
Obviously, in spoken Japanese, you can’t hear that he is saying this word in hiragana. But we know that he is. So aside from him using the word human to make him more, well, human, he is also saying the word pitiable in an innocent way, which furthers the image he is trying to create of himself; that of an innocent human being that has been wronged. Because clearly, someone has to help the heroes see that villains are also people. As mentioned before, this is a common theme of the League of Villains and has most recently been brought up by Toga’s question to Uraraka of whether or not the heroes saw Twice as a person. Dabi is, in a way, asking that same question, just with several exclamation marks.
The second line says「正義の味方が犯した罪それが俺だ!」
「正義 ; seigi」-> justice
「の ; no 」-> particle to indicate possession, works like an apostrophe
「味方 ; mikata 」-> supporter
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「犯した ; okashita 」-> committed
「罪 ; tsumi 」-> crime
「それ ; sore 」-> that
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「だ ; da 」-> casual form of です (desu); be; is
= “The crimes committed by the champion of justice: that’s me.”
That first part seigi no mikata is sort of a set expression, but I wanted to break it down so you can see what the actual words are. It’s generally translated as champion of justice, knight in shining armor, crime avenger, or hero. Hero is obviously not the right translation here, since they just use the word hero for the profession. Champion of justice is just the closest to the actual words, hence I chose that translation.
The official translation is once again being biased with this sentence, this time though not so much to make the villains look worse, but to make a hero look less bad. While the Japanese version says that this “champion of justice” aka Endeavor has committed crimes that resulted in Dabi’s existence, the translation changed it to “did some vile stuff” which is seriously downplaying the fact that a Pro Hero, whose job it is to fight criminals, is actually a criminal himself! It’s just yet again a very odd change to make, especially given the fact that we know that Endeavor has committed crimes. So why make it sound like less here?
Tumblr media
Okay, so you might be confused about this line if you read both the fan translation, as well as the official translation.
Again, the official translation says “evil is thriving” - the fan translation, on the other hand, says “evil will no longer prosper.”
To opposite meanings for the same short phrase. Why is that?
Tumblr media
You see, the first line says「悪が栄えるんじゃねェ!」
「悪 ; aku 」-> evil
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「栄える ; sakaeru 」-> to prosper
「んじゃねェ ; n janee 」-> “isn’t it” (see explanation below)
= “Evil will prosper, won’t it?”
The reason for that confusion is that last part, n janee, because its meaning depends on the context, and with that, in cases like this, it’s less obvious which it is.
This is a rougher way of the casual n janai, which is a more casual way of no janai, which is a more casual form of no de wa arimasen. Or in simple terms: it’s very casual.
So what does it mean? Like I said, the meaning depends on the context.
The no is an explanatory particle and when paired with janai can be used for when you express an opinion, whilst seeking the listener’s opinion.
So you can treat it as a “isn’t it” in an affirmative sentence (when you express your opinion or talking about probability), but you can also use it to negate a sentence (hence the two opposite translations). The former can also be used when you’re making a point.
Knowing that it’s pretty much down to context, we have to ask what makes more sense. Is Dabi saying that evil will prosper, or is he saying evil doesn’t prosper?
To put this into context, you have to look at the surrounding sentences. Prior to this one, Dabi mentioned that he is the crimes of the hero system. In the next phrase, he talks about justice collapsing. Because of that, I think “evil will prosper” is a more accurate translation as justice collapses as a result of evil - unless you interpret evil as being about the heroes.
Anyway, the second line says「正義が側板するだけ!」
「正義 ; seigi 」-> justice
「が ; ga 」-> subject marker particle
「側板 ; gakai 」-> collapse; downfall
「する ; suru 」-> to do (turns the noun it attaches to into a verb)
「だけ ; dake 」-> only
= “Justice will only collapse!”
If you look back at the official translation, it says “Justice is losing this war!” Meanwhile, the Japanese version doesn’t mention the words losing or war. While they still somewhat say the same thing, losing a war doesn’t inherently lead to irreversible, long-term effects. Instead, this situation is about more than just losing this war. The entire system is taking a fatal blow from this. Not even so much from this war, though. The reason Dabi is so certain that this will be the downfall for justice is that how are people supposed to still trust in this justice system when those that are supposed to defend it are criminals themselves? It’s more of a natural consequence resulting from a system that has been corrupt for far too long - the exposure is simply what will put an end to it.
The third line in that part is「俺はその責任を感情豊かな皆々様に示しただけだ」
「俺 ; ore 」-> I
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「その ; sono 」-> that
「責任 ; sekinin」-> duty; responsibility
「を ; wo 」-> direct object marker
「感情 ; kanjou」-> emotion
「豊かな ; yutaka na」-> extremely; very
「皆々様 ; minaminasama」-> everyone
「に ; ni 」-> to
「示した ; shimeshita」-> pointed out; showed
「だけだ ; dake」-> only
「だ; da 」-> casual form of です (desu); be; is
= “I only pointed this responsibility out to all you very emotional people.”
What irked me about this phrase in particular in the official translation was yet again the choice of words. I get that Dabi has a rough way of speaking. But sometimes, he chooses to use polite words and that shouldn’t be erased.
So when the official translation makes him say “All I’m doing is showing you sentimental dopes who’s to blame for that!” It’s just a rude phrase. But in Japanese he says minaminasama. You might be familiar with the word minna or minna-san, with the san in the latter example being a polite suffix (kind of like Mr./Mrs.,...). Sama is similar to that but even more polite. So minaminasama is about as polite as you can go. There might not be a direct English equivalent to that level of politeness, but I think we can all understand that “dopes” is not a correct translation here.
The responsibility/blame part goes back to what Deku said to him. “You aren’t Endeavor” - no, he isn't. And no, he isn’t exactly trying to be better. But that kind of mentality only ignores the obvious fact that this all could’ve been prevented, had it not been for Endeavor and his own selfish goals. It was a hero - the “champion of justice” - that committed crimes just like a villain. But it’s unheard of for a hero to do such a thing. Society doesn’t get shaken at its core when it hears about a villain committing a crime. A hero, on the other hand, being found guilty of a criminal record, will lead to people doubting the integrity of heroes altogether and that is not Dabi’s doing. All he does is share the truth.
To round this speech off, we get one last phrase:
Tumblr media
“The future coming down the pipeline… is one where all that schmaltz and lip service is gonna get blown away by the chaos!”
Tumblr media
The Japanese line says「これから訪れる未来はきってキレイ事など吹けば飛んでく混沌だろうぜ!」
「これから ; korekara 」-> from now on; after this
「訪れる ; otozureru 」-> to arrive
「未来 ; mirai 」-> future
「は ; wa 」-> topic marker particle
「きっと ; kitto 」-> surely; without a doubt
「キレイ 事; kireigoto」-> glossing over; lip service
「など ; nado 」-> such as
「吹けば ; fukeba 」-> to blow (conditional form of fuku)
「飛んでく ; tondeku」-> to go flying (short for tonde iku)
「混沌 ; konton」-> chaos
「だろう ; darou」-> it seems; don’t you think?
「ぜ ; ze 」-> ending particle for emphasis (more casual/ruder version of yo)
= “Surely, if things like this lip service get blown over, the future coming after this will be chaos flying around.”
In Japanese, there are several conditional forms. The ba form, as used here in fukeba, is used when the preceding clause expresses a condition, which results in natural consequences. In this case, something happens in case pretty things get blown over.
Mirai is one of the words you can use to talk about the future in Japanese. This word is more intangible and more general rather than being about one specific event or person, so everyone will be affected by this.
And with that, we have made it through all of his speech from this chapter, congrats!
Something you may have noticed is that there are plenty of particles you can use at the end of a sentence, usually for emphasis. One of the most common ones you find throughout the chapter are yo and ze. Yo is a pretty standard one to show emphasis, whereas ze is more of a colloquial version of yo that has an assertive feel and is therefore usually only used when speaking in very casual conversations or to someone of lower social status than you. Dabi has used this on Endeavor before and is now also using it on Deku - aka his opponents.
Going back to the start of the chapter when Dabi is mainly focused on Shouto, though, he ends most of his sentences with naa. As mentioned before, this particle is used to express emotions/sentiment.
He also uses that during their first on-screen interaction during the summer camp. While I do think that Dabi is mainly still only seeing Shouto as an extension of Endeavor, I do think that there is also a part of him that does see himself in him and that can somewhat sympathize with him. He isn’t being as rough on him overall (verbally that is), and instead is trying to come off as more emotional, possibly just to appeal more to him.
To sum it up, there are a lot of things that just get lost in translation due to nuances that don’t exist in English. More often than not, though, the villains are being given harsher words, whereas anything related to heroes is softened. Dabi is constantly shown to be someone who puts great care and thought into the words he uses, so there is a lot of that emotional intelligence that gets neglected in the translation and then makes him seem more like someone on a random mission rather than someone who has put genuine thought into this.
There are still so many people in the fandom who, for some reason, think Dabi is in the wrong and irredeemable for having killed thirty people, whilst having the same stance as Deku in thinking that Endeavor is much better because at least he is trying.
While they should both be held accountable for their actions, Dabi has a good point when he said that heroes are to blame for his existence and that their crimes are what will ruin the justice system and not him.
Best Jeanist’s reaction to this whole situation was complaining that Dabi uses his personal past to shed a bad light on the heroes, which summarizes that exact problem of the hero society: That heroes are more concerned with their own image than actually being heroes who go above and beyond to bring about peace and safety.
Seeing Shouto’s reaction, being concerned about his big brother rather than himself, is at the very least giving some hope that at least one person on the hero side is able to see beyond the villain exterior and see them as a human-being - without needing a long speech for it.
We’ll have to wait and see how this is going to continue, but in more likeliness, the official English translation will continue to include its bias.
If you’ve made it this far - thank you so much for reading! This post was filled with a lot of information and trust me when I say some of these lines almost broke me as I tried to understand them. I hope I could clarify some parts of the chapter, though, specifically Dabi’s character, since the official translation loves to change his character.

I was wondering if there was anything funky about the term "Kamikake," either the kanji or the English translations. And there kind of is, but also kind of isn't?? For one, both "God Sworn" and "Divine Vow" are sort of a weird degree removed from what I feel would be an accurate translation, but they do still rub up against the right idea... so they aren't exactly wrong either? But they feel like they lack context to be read correctly in English.
The immediate word/term referenced here is kamikakete[神掛けて] which most English translations seem to take as "swear by god" but very specifically it is an adverb, not a verb. Alternatively, "absolutely" shows up in a few sources, and less frequently "utterly," "dead," and "perfectly." So the practical use seems to be to describe something as being done with great certainty or without fail. Kubo however, uses just the kanji [神掛] in quotes and as a noun.
So right off the bat, the English use of it based on the adjectival "God Sworn" is wrong, because that seems to put the emphasis on the act of swearing (swearing how? to god.) rather than the idea that a different act was what was sworn. (you did what? how did you do it? in a godsworn fashion.)
To put it another way: The word is used more in the sense of something like, "I swear to god, I'm telling the truth!" where the phrase is kind of more clunky in English, rather than being a singular article in Japanese, but what it's describing is the act of "telling." In this kind of way a synonymous phrase might be something like "In all honesty, I'm telling the truth!" or "Without a doubt, I'm telling the truth!" the phrases don't actually involve or evoke an act of "swearing" or "vowing" the way it might otherwise imply in English, it's an emphasis of on the assurance of the action it's linked to. With all the certainty that "God assures..." or perhaps which "God has been assured..."
Sorry, got kind of carried away... Point being: That term I just described is the thing that Kubo turned from an adverb into a noun, and not the very similar sounding adjective in English. So, obviously this means we need to break down the colloquial phrase to the root words if we expect any kind of clarity...
The individual kanji read as [神]: "god(s)"/"[the] divine," and is of course pretty commonly used, so it's not like there's a lot of room for variations there... but [掛] can read a few ways...
The most readily available interpretation is "credit (as in finance)" or "money owed." Another is "-rest"/"-rack"/"-hanger" and although these might seem wildly disparate it does make a certain linguistic sense, especially in this particular case; A thing upon which someone's money "rests" is effectively a financial credit, or a debt depending on context. That upon which "god rests", or "god's credit(account)", or "a god debt" all describe Ukitake's circumstances with a little more clarity than "god sworn" or "god vow." (Also, a bit of a tangent, but it does evoke something like "god is resting on you" in a sense, which kinda relates to a point I'll get to later...)
So, it is effectively, "[The Thing] Sworn to God" or "Indebted to God" or with a little liberty, "What God is Assuredly Owed." And certainly calling it something just "Divine Vow" doesn't really imply all that. (or did it make sense to everyone else and I just did a lot of talking to point out the obvious?)
And what is the god Mimihagi "owed?" What was "sworn" to it? Ukitake's body and longevity, which was granted to him and his parents, effectively on loan, and which Mimihagi then collects on. Ukitake's parents basically sold their child to a creepy hand deity, because so long as that deity had use for him one day, it would keep him alive until then. And Ukitake understood that he owed his life to Mimihagi, so when he invoked the Kamikake himself, he was effectively choosing to repay his debt: Choosing to make good on his (parents') "vow."
And interestingly it's actually very much like what YHWACH's powers and the Sternritter Schrift were described as; Where YHWACH was born without any powers, or even basic bodily senses of his own, but could grant health and powers to others. Then they develop and cultivate further power by their own effort and merits, only to eventually die and give their accumulated power, talent, and experience back to YWHACH, making him stronger. And in the case of the Sternritter specifically, they also swore themselves to him via their blood oath, like what we saw Uryuu do. (Which btw links back to the christian references in the Vollstandig's use of the kanji for Eucharist/Holy-Communion)
Both Mimihagi and YHWACH have this ability to effectively loan their power and more importantly to collect on that loan with interest. (And if Kubo hadn't retconned Chad and Orihime's powers as having come from their proximity to the hogyoku, instead of Ichigo, we might have even been able to say Ichigo had such an effect as well...)
So, what's interesting about Szayel (and really, Kubo) bringing it up in the new chapter is that it's not just a random fancy epithet he's throwing at Ukitake, he's evoking that debt as a part of Ukitake. It makes it sound like Ukitake's being in Hell is somehow part of his debt. It's part of what he owes Mimihagi or the Soul King or perhaps a more nebulous god/the gods. So it may very well be that Ukitake is uniquely the new big scary skelly-door knife-hand guy because of that, and not because of a more general process of being a powerful shinigami in Hell. It's possible that other captains like Yamamoto and Unohana are in a role closer to Szayel's as prisoners, than they are to Ukitake's position or relative power as some kind of enforcer of Hell's boundaries.

Guess who’s back with another tier list!
So I found another Black Lagoon tier list, this one including both Fabiola and Ginji, and this time I decided to go a different route with the list. Maybe some time I will use it to make a new, actual tier list, but today I decided to talk about probably one of the most confusing things about Black Lagoon (especially in the anime): the language barrier!
...So basically this list is just what languages the characters are speaking based on what I picked up on over the past decade of being a fan of this series.
This list was inspired by the fact that people watching the anime tend to be very confused on what languages the characters are actually speaking because unfortunately there is no perfect dub of Black Lagoon that actually shows what characters are actually speaking at any given time. Don’t get me wrong, still one of the best English anime dubs of all time, I’m in full agreement of that, but both the Japanese and English dubs of this anime fall apart when the language barrier becomes a key component in the series. And honestly it’s not their fault. I imagine translating this over to anime must have been hell for both dubs.
One important thing to mention: I do not claim that this is 100% accurate. This is what I’ve picked up on as I read the manga and watched the show, but obviously there may be other languages these characters speak that either I missed or was just never really addressed in the series. Also in several places I filled in the blanks myself because, well, obviously English isn’t going to be the first language for, for example, Ibraha.
I also remember reading in a few places that it was confirmed that English is a common language in Roanapur, but I cannot find the official source that said this. This is one of the reasons why I’m not claiming that this is 100% accurate, because while I do think this is probably what was intended for the story, no proof means no proof at the end of the day. But it’s also worth noting that--spoilers btw--the United States basically runs the city behind the scenes, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Another reason why I’m not claiming that this is 100% accurate is because human beings are fallible and as shown in some of my corrections below I know I’ve made a few mistakes here and there in the list, and there could be more that I’m missing or that I’ve got wrong. At the end of the day, this list is not to be seen as a definitive answer to the question of “What languages do these characters speak?” but rather something to look at to get a better understanding of some of the more confusing parts of Black Lagoon wherever language is a key component in the story.
One final note: at one point I refer to the main mob bosses of Roanapur as the Big Four. This is just a name I came up with to describe the balance of power among the four mob bosses, so it’s not an official name as far as I’m personally aware. I figured I should point that out to clear up any confusion.
So with that being said, here’s the breakdown. Expect lots of spoilers.
Revy speaks English, and a small handful of words or phrases in Cantonese (as mentioned in The Wired Red Wild Card), and that seems to be it. She is the most likely person to tell some to speak English when they speak another language to her, or to just say that she doesn’t speak whatever language they’re speaking. In the Japan arc especially, if you’re reading the manga or watching the Japanese dub, it’s clear that she doesn’t understand what most of the Japanese characters are saying. Canonically the vendor she has a shouting match with is actually shouting at her to speak Japanese and she thinks he’s insulting her (and her being unable to talk to the vendor is why Rock goes back and forth between them in the first place to talk about the fixed game), she never actually communicates with Ginji or the kids verbally (she talks to them, but they don’t understand each other’s words), when Rock asks her if she and Ginji can work together in the anime’s English dub when they enter the bowling alley he’s actually asking if they can communicate (Revy basically says when the action starts, they’ll be in sync without needing to talk to each other), and the dude who’s like “I GIVE UP, SERIOUSLY, I GIVE UP” is actually desperately trying to say he gives up in English. Also if you’re only familiar with the English dub, this video is a great example of why this arc is so confusing for everybody, and why the English dub was like “Fuck it, we’re not bothering with the language barrier subplot.”
Benny speaks English. He’s also Jewish, so it’s possible he may know Hebrew or another Semitic language.
Eda speaks English. She’s a CIA agent who claims to be from Alabama and is shown to be very patriotic when in CIA mode. Not that I’m saying this automatically means she doesn’t know any other language, but I haven’t seen any proof that she does.
Lotton... is mostly speculation based on everyone else, particularly Sawyer and Shenhua. I don’t even think he has an official nationality, he just... exists.
Sawyer speaks English. She is British and her name is of English origin. It is possible she speaks a Chinese dialect as well since she seems to do jobs for the Triad and befriends Shenhua, but she seems to be more freelance than a member of the Triad so this isn’t very clear.
Rowan is also mostly speculation. His name is of Irish origin, his last name is likely Pigeon, and Revy can understand him.
Chief Watsup is the chief of police in Roanapur and is the only recurring character in the show who is actually Thai. He can communicate with both Revy and Balalaika, so whether or not he speaks English depends heavily on whether or not Revy and Balalaika speak Thai (and given that Revy says in The Wired Red Wild Card that she only speaks English and a tiny bit of Cantonese, it’s more likely that he knows English).
Yukio and Ginji speak Japanese and do not appear to speak English. It is ignored in the English dub of the anime, but everywhere else it is often brought up that Revy can’t understand what they’re saying and they can’t understand what Revy is saying. To add on to what I mentioned above in Revy’s section, also consider that Yukio curiously asks Rock if Revy is Japanese when they first meet, with the thought in mind that the first thing Yukio and Ginji see when they first meet Rock and Revy is Revy shouting in English at a Japanese vendor who is yelling at her to speak Japanese.
Mr. Kageyama obviously speaks Japanese, and I assume he speaks English as well as he seems to be able to speak to both Dutch and Balalaika, the latter of whom is confirmed to not know Japanese.
Chaka canonically speaks both Japanese and English. Not only can he and Revy understand each other, but being able to speak English is one of the things he brags about to Revy when they first meet, saying something along the lines of “Can’t run a place like this without being able to speak English.”
Takenaka obviously speaks Japanese, more than likely speaks English as he’s able to communicate with Revy, and likely speaks Arabic as he has allied himself with Ibraha.
Ibraha obviously would have Arabic as his first language and he presumably speaks English as well (and possibly French as he’s from Lebanon, but this isn’t relevant). The important thing is that he does NOT know Japanese, because it is implied that THIS is the reason why he gets angry out of nowhere during the interrogation. Takenaka and Rock are speaking in Japanese during the interrogation (signified by a change in font in the manga, which would only be important if the language barrier is important to the scene) and Ibraha interrupts by saying something along the lines of “Even I know this is no longer an interrogation!”
All of the canonically English-speaking cast can understand Roberta, Garcia, and Fabiola, whose first language is obviously Spanish. Rock and Fabiola both act as interpreters in different points of the series. It’s also worth noting that Lovelace is obviously of English origin, which suggests to me that the Lovelace family in particular has a very ethnically diverse background.
Rico communicates with Revy and Eda, but judging by his name he probably can also speak Spanish (or possibly Portuguese, but Spanish is more likely as there are many Spanish speakers in town).
Balalaika and Boris obviously speak Russian, but they can communicate with the English-speaking Lagoon Company as well as Roberta.
Hansel and Gretel are Romanian, can communicate with several English-speaking characters including Revy and Eda, and are working for the Italians.
Verrocchio obviously speaks Italian, and presumably English as well as he’s part of the Big Four of Roanapur (this again ties into the idea that English is a common language in Roanapur). Also where IS Ronnie the Jaws? Or Abrego for that matter? This list said “All Characters.” False advertising smh
Bao is Vietnamese, but often speaks to characters that don’t speak Vietnamese (e.g. Revy).
Mr. Chang would likely speak Cantonese as a leading figure of the Hong Kong Triad and would likely know Mandarin as well. He can communicate with Revy, who according to The Wired Red Wild Card only knows bits and pieces of Cantonese and likely not enough to hold a whole conversation. He is also the CIA’s lapdog, so unless Eda speaks Cantonese they are probably talking to each other in English.
Shenhua is from Taiwan and as such would most likely speak Taiwanese Mandarin. She speaks with Revy who makes fun of her for her thick accent and way of speaking when she speaks English. She also might speak Cantonese as well since she works for the Hong Kong Triad.
Ahbe from the WWII flashback obviously speaks German.
Sir Alfred the old Nazi fuck would also speak German, but he’s able to talk to Dutch over the phone and he has American Neo-Nazis doing his bidding so he likely speaks English as well. He is also apparently living in Spain so it’s possible he might also speak Spanish.
Caxton and Yolanda speak English as they are constantly speaking with known English speakers throughout their appearances. Caxton in particular is about as ‘Murican as it gets without being a negative stereotype. It is unknown if they know any other language.
Jane is almost always speaking with English speakers. She is from India, so she likely also speaks Hindi. She is also part of an international team of counterfeiters, so it’s likely she knows other languages as well. After I made this tier list I remembered she also speaks German at one point and I think Theo was also from Germany, so she probably speaks German fluently as well, but I’m not redoing this list.
Leigharch speaks drugs... and presumably English and Irish as well.
Rock pretty much knows every language that ever existed in the history of mankind. He is basically the go to guy to translate anything. That being said, Japanese and English are the languages he’s most fluent in.
Dutch knows English, and--spoilers for L’homme Sombre btw--probably French as well, and also probably one of the many languages spoken in Burkina Faso, especially if he was born there (which I sadly didn’t think about until after I made the list). This arc is still ongoing in the manga, and more than anything I’m just excited to see Dutch's backstory being explored. It was long overdue. (Now we just gotta hope that the same happens for Benny.)
As I mentioned in that caveat, Roanapur is in Thailand, and it’s possible the people living in Roanapur may know Thai, but actual local Thai citizens are a rarity in Black Lagoon (with Chief Watsup being the only recurring Thai character), and American influence is so strong in the city that it’s probably the reason why people drive on the right side of the road with steering wheels on the left side, in a country where people drive on the left, and why US currency is accepted along with Thai currency, so that’s worth pointing out.
