In my opinion, Joshua has this innate ability to be soothing and gentle when needed most

If his significant other has a break down, he might not immediately understand

But he will still be able to make them feel better, ya feel?

storytime So the two of you have been dating for about six months now

And everyone constantly jokes about how they thought the honeymoon period would be over by now but if there’s any couple that makes it work, of course it’s the two of you

Or they otherwise comment about how the two of you make the perfect couple

Like there’s Joshua, gentleman prince with a mischievous streak and enough under the table memes that only serve to make him more endearing

And then there’s you!! hardworking university student with your head on your shoulders and your whole life ahead of you – everyone thinks you’re destined for success

Not to mention you have nice smelling hair, a sweet smile, and a pretty laugh…. pretty much most of the younger members have a small crush on you

They would never admit to it though because you and Joshua are the literal dream team and no one would ever dream of splitting the two of you apart

And you like being the perfect couple and you like how everyone admits that one day they hope to find a relationship as loving and supportive as you are with Josh

Which is why it’s so hard to admit that your life is falling apart

It’s hard to admit it even to yourself – and much less to Joshua and everybody else that you know

Besides, he’s busy with his schedules and stressed out enough, you don’t want to tack on to that

Those internships that everyone thought that you were a shoo in for?

You haven’t got a callback from any of them

In fact, you’re pretty sure you saw one of your interviewers chuck your resume into the trash can just as you were leaving

All those high grades you’re getting?

You haven’t gotten more than 3 hours of sleep in the past two months trying to achieve them

Living expenses are… Living expenses, and the combined rising rent and cost of living in Seoul has left you with barely a dollar to your name

Your family is stressing you out because they expect just as much from you as everyone else

And your fish died

So yeah, life ain’t very pretty for you right now

But you don’t say anything because you think it’ll just pass over and that this is just a steep wall that you’re going to have to climb over

Another month passes and you wonder if the wall is made out of glass because although you can see the other side, it’s nearly impossible to climb and fragile to top

And any moment now, you feel like the glass might shatter and hurt you irreparably and you’re too afraid to do anything about it

Joshua notices your eyes look a little empty and that your walk is a little wobbly sometimes

He can feel that something is wrong

It’s his spidey-sense observing nature

And he’s a little hurt that you didn’t immediately tell him about it

But he trusts you to tell him everything when you’re ready

So he goes on as if everything’s normal though he subtly amps up the visits and affection and gifts

In fact, he’s visiting your apartment one day when everything finally crashes

He’s carrying your favourite bakery treats and some coffee to help you with your late-night cram session

He arrives and enters as usual, riding the elevator up and checking his hair in the elevator mirror to make sure his hair looks fine for his boo and all that

Finds your apartment with ease and knocks on the door. You don’t answer immediately but that’s fine, he’ll wait

He waits

And waits

Okay, maybe you didn’t hear him? He knocks again

He waits

And waits

Oh! You probably just have your earphones in, and are listening to music while you study. He’ll just call instead.

When your phone goes to voicemail twice, he starts to get a little worried. After all, he did call to notify you that he was coming.

Of course, there’s always the possibility that you just fell asleep, but he can’t take that chance. He digs out the extra key from underneath the rug (he keeps telling you to move it but you always counter that if anyone is desperate enough to rob from a struggling college student with only textbooks and a crate of ramen in their possession, then it’s not worth the fight).

And runs in to your apartment, forgetting the baked goods right outside the door

goshdarnit josh that shit’s gonna get snatched and you know it

He rushes into your small bedroom, only to find you cuddled up in a corner, rocking back and forth as your body shakes with your sobs

He can see the strewn pages of your study sheets across the floor and it’s a little overwhelming but he doesn’t waste his time in coming over and immediately taking you in his arms, whispering words of comfort inside your ear

“I’m here now, I’m here now. I’m sorry I wasn’t before.”

“I love you, and you’re okay. I love you, and I’m here for you, whatever it is.”

He does this until you’ve finally calm down enough for him to push further. When you stop shaking he asks you:

“What happened, love?”

Shoot, wrong thing to say? You start sobbing again and he tries to say that you don’t have to tell him but you just blurt it out anyway

“The fucking printer is broken!”

Darn, he’s even more confused now

“I-I-I can go out and buy you a new one. Or we can go to the Pledis building and print whatever you want. In colour too!”

“And my fucking fish is dead,” you wail.

“I don’t know any pet stores open this late but… We can steal the fish from the VP’s office? Beta, right? They’re even similar colours.”

Josh is trying so hard to do what he can for you even though he’s lost and confused that you can’t help but chuckle slightly at the ridiculousness of it all, even though you must look awful with the tears streaming down your face.

“Shu, I can’t get you kicked out of Seventeen for stealing a fish.”

and hallelujah that’s a freaking smile he got out of you, so Joshua continues on because he feels like he finally did something right.

“He’s got like 10 of them, he’s not gonna notice.”

You let out a choked giggle and Joshua leans in to wipe away the tears and snot off your face.

“Really, what’s wrong? You’ve been out of it for a while.”

Which is when you lay it all on him: the internship, your lack of sleep, the pressure from your family and friends, high expectations, and how you felt guilty for not changing your fish’s tank water enough… The printer was the last straw for you

You even explain to him your glass wall analogy, and Joshua takes it all in stride

He nods at the right parts and asks you to elaborate when he doesn’t fully understand something because he wants to fully understand everything

You finish feeling a little less burdened, though still generally in a bad place

Josh, now fully caught up on the situation, leans in to kiss your forehead and tells you one last time that everything will be alright before insisting that you head off to bed

You try telling him that you just can’t but he’s not having any of it

And when Joshua’s firm and set, you know you can’t win

You reluctantly give in, but only if Joshua sleeps beside you tonight

He immediately agrees, and the both of you get ready for bed, Joshua taking back one of his shirts that you stole

He tucks you in and hops in beside you, recounting antics of the boys until you fall asleep

You wake up to find that Joshua isn’t beside you anymore, and immediately start to worry

Did he leave in the middle of the night, deciding he’s had enough?

But then you finally take a look around and ???

All of your stuff is tidy again, your work is all organized, and there’s a brand new printer set up too!! You’re busy admiring the new setup when Josh enters the room, breakfast platter in hand

“Ahh, I was hoping to return before you woke up.” He settles the platter down on your lap, before gesturing to your desk excitedly. “Like it?”

“Shu, you didn’t have to.”

“Yeah, I know the stapling and hole-punching feature is a bit much but that stuff can be a pain.”

“No, I meant– wait, it can staple documents for me?”

Joshua goes to explain all the cool features and you realize just how damn lucky you are

You love him so damn much, and if you remember correctly, he said so too.

“Hey Shu, about what you said last night…”

“I’m still down for stealing the fish. Seokmin’s always telling me about how I got to live a little bit more–”

“Shu, you said that you loved me.”

He gets all flustered and blushy and he’s quick to reassure you.

“Yeah, of course I do,,, but don’t worry about it I just told you how I felt there’s no need to say it back but I’m always here to support you because I really do love you and if you think for one second that I’m not going to try my best and help you climb over this glass wall then you’re wrong and I’ve got a mountain of pillows and hugs to catch you if you fall and–”

“Shu, I love you too.”

This boy beams like it’s Christmas day– his face stretches so wide. He just stands there and stares clumsily at you for a while because he doesn’t know how to respond

He never really knows what to do when it comes to you

But that’s part of what makes it so exciting

Finally, he snaps out of it when he remembers something important

“By the way, you’ve got to move that key. There’s a thief in the neighbourhood, I tell you. Would you believe all the baked goods that I bought last night are gone. And they had the gall to leave a sticky note with a smiley face behind, the gall–”

Yeah, you had a feeling you’d be getting over this glass wall sooner than you expected

Gara from MERRY and Kyo from sukekiyo are talking about the upcoming event organized by MERRY!

Event organized by MERRY titled “Blooming in March with stupidity a hail of rusted scissors and martial law at the flower garden of the tricycle, please forgive me” will be held in March in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. sukekiyo will perform at each show. Moreover, Inugami Circuss Dan will appear in Osaka, and Metronome will play in Nagoya and Tokyo; all those bands have their own strong personality. I could talk with Gara (MERRY), the mastermind behind this, and Kyo (sukekiyo / DIR EN GREY), who played an important role for the former.

- It’s been 6 years since you had an interview together. It was before sukekiyo has started activities.

Gara – That’s right. We have transferred to the same company and Kyo also helpedproducing us. *1

- In the meantime, I don’t think it was an easy time for MERRY.

Gara – That’s true.

Kyo – Recently was the most tiring I think? We talked about this just a while ago, about playing concerts like everyday. ‘What’s wrong?” and so on.

Gara - Yeah. This February is the hardest (wry laugh).

- Isn’t now the time with the huge urge to create? Do you feel all fired up?

Gara – I’m most excited about the May 5th at Hibiya (“Tokyo Spring Hobiya Democratic~Sheeps’ Advocacy~” at Hibiya Kokaido).

- From your perspective, Gara, how does Kyo’s performance with sukekiyo look like?

Gara – With DIR EN GREY there is a theme of “pain”, but it feels opposite. The anger and spite that is hiding deep inside. I feel that a lot. Personally I much prefer sukekiyo’s worldview. Their performance and lighting as well, it get’s you really absorbed in it.

- sukekiyo concerts feel like an art performance. Among our readers there might be people who don’t know both of you well, so [let me explain that] Gara used to work as Kyo’s roadie.

Gara – That’s right. I started this work soon when I came to Tokyo. We know each other that long. It’s been almost 20 years. If there’s something wrong, Kyo will give me advice, it’s very reassuring. He will properly tell me off or praise me.

- I wouldn’t call it a teacher and student relation, but you can talk about anything together. It will be the 4th time that sukekiyo and MERRY will perform on the same stage together. Fans welcome this collaboration with nicknames such as “sukemeri”.

Kyo – If I was a fan I would think “aren’t you doing too much together as you work with the same company?”. I wonder if the power of adults is working here? (kyotaku – management deciding things)

Gara – But seeing the title of this event this kind of power is not working at all (laughing).

Kyo – When I discussed with Gara what should we do with the title, he proposed to just give words alternatively, and we have this event title as a result.

Gara – sukekiyo, Metronome and Inugami Circuss Dan. All bands with very strong presence, so I wondered what to do with the title for a long time. Playing with this line-up, I really wanted to knock it out so I consulted Kyo, and this idea came up.

– So that’s how it happened. I will take my time having fun guessing who gave which phrase. It’s a super long title, I was wondering if all elements mentioned will be reflected in the performance somehow.

Gara – You were over thinking it (laughing). In the beginning we didn’t announce who will we play with, we just published the event title and fans were quite surprised as well. As DIR EN GREY has tight schedule I don’t think many people thought that sukekiyo will join as well.

Kyo – But I was saying since last year “I want to play together again” all the time.

Gara – This time I asked directly “Kyo, do you have time in March?” and it went ahead from there. We’re organizing this event, but we talked a lot with Kyo and sukekiyo members, it was fun, feels very fresh this way.

Kyo – Going into details, even [talking about] goods was fun. “Usually people definitely don’t make merchandise like that!”.

Gara – From our side Yuu got involved too, it started from “what do you want to make?”. There were many questions like “Kyo, where from do you get ideas like that?”.

Kyo – I’m just a type who has some ideas all the time, continually.

Gara – Even with stickers (“Nero okunnahareya seal”), if you win the draw, for some reason you will get a Nero hug pillow.

Kyo – Somehow it got to the point when we talked about “hug pillows as a draw prize” and we decided on Nero.

Gara – And without telling Nero anything, we just showed him the finished product “your hug pillow” and he was quite pleased. Like that we also really enjoyed creating goods, so it’s all very good.

- You seem to be enjoying this more than fans (laughing).

Gara – Yup. Although I was surprised when Kyo said he wanted to produce a toy knife. It can be used for magic tricks, it’s the type with a retracting blade. Without thinking I asked “Who needs that?!” (laughing).

Kyo – Need or not, it doesn’t matter. I haven’t seen anyone selling a band’s goods like that. It’s a festival type event, so everyone will get one while thinking “what the hell is that?”. So you can stab your friends.

Gara – I see (laughing). Kyo is very fast with his work even when it’s a busy period like now. I learned a lot about “where those ideas come from?”.

Kyo – I hate wasting time. I’m a type who needs to finish everything at once. Fun things just come to me by themselves.

Gara – It’s same with the production, Kyo works the same rapid way with sukekiyo and with DIR EN GREY. I feel that even though we are close I could see a new part of him with this opportunity.

- From your perspective, Kyo, how’s MERRY recently?

Kyo – Recently I often see photos of Gara wearing a school cap and I think “ah so that’s the atmosphere of their shows now”. They had so many shows only in February, in the morning, as it was raining (planned for their latest single “Ame to kasa / Rain and umbrella”). I was wondering what is he doing.

- Events with rich content just vigorously continue. Going back to the topic of the event in March, can we expect to see you standing on the stage together again? *2

Kyo – Nope, this time not.

Gara – Honestly me neither, this kind of terrific stage can only be tasted by sukekiyo. I’m singing for over 10 years so I’m not so nervous about it anymore, but those two times when I sang with sukekiyo I was [so nervous I was] nauseous.

Kyo – Hahaha!

Gara – Thinking “Is Kyo singing here like this?”, pressure was just too much. The performance is so delicate, and the music score and melody of songs were really difficult. It’s the 4th time, I want Kyo to see that me and MERRY have grown up. We have confidence in the current us. In Osaka and Nagoya, and lastly in Tokyo, starting from the beginning I want to meet everyone with a loud clash. It’s the first time we will play with Inugami Circus Dan, it’s been 10 years since the last time with Metronome. They are both very distinctive bands, so I’m really looking forward to it.

- Kyo will release a mobile site official book “Aun no ari” in April. He has a wide range of expression. Do you think you should try something like that as well?

Gara – I’m really thinking about it. Seeing that Kyo is drawing, has poetry and photography released as well.

Kyo – You have released a book as well though? *3

Gara – Yes, I have, but the category of coolness is totally different here. I fell on the stage and got hernia.

Kyo – Isn’t it good to put that in the book?

Gara – When I was having a surgery it was Kyo who told me “it would be good to write something”. Even before when he produced us he told us often “not only the band, isn’t it better to try doing various things?”. So Yuu is drawing, Nero started photography. Not only me, all of members were given advice, and our creativity increased a lot.

Kyo – Getting inspiration from other sources than music and using it for music, you can get a different perspective as well. I thought that it will help MERRY to become even more mesmerizing.

- I see. It’s good to realize things you want to do. sukekiyo will hold a seated tour in June in Tokyo and Kyoto, titled “The Falling Moon”. This tour also has a meaningful title.

Kyo – From this seated shows our atmosphere will completely change. We are still in the planning stage, so I don’t know how far I can take it, but I want to do something new.

Gara – Can fans move a bit during the shows now?

Kyo – At some shows only.

Gara – How about at the March event?

Kyo – Well, it’s an event. It’s not like everything is okay, but our fans will not move.

Gara – Will you say something if?

Kyo – “Shut up”.

Gara – Heheh. So if for example people who never saw sukekiyo will start shouting…

Kyo – My fans will glare at them.

Gara – Hahaha! It’s a problem of reading the atmosphere.

Kyo – That’s right. Our fans already thought well about what makes a sukekiyo fan. So if someone moves a lot at the concerts others will think “that person doesn’t know anything”.

- I see (laughing).

Gara – When I sang “mama” at Akasaka BLITZ over 1000 standing people were watching me. I’ve never seen fans so still like a statue, it was so intense (wry laugh).

Kyo – As MERRY and sukekiyo played together before our fans know the other one’s style, I feel like they get along. I wonder how will it be with the fans of Inugami Circus Dan and Metronome. I hope everyone will be kind to others.

Gara – I didn’t want to have the atmosphere or proceedings of the usual event. It’s good to see the intensity of each performer. Even with 3 bands playing, there will be plenty of time for each band. I wanted people to be able to see the colour and worldview of each band.

Kyo – Recently I said that it’s okay already, but in the end I want to play together again.

Gara – Really! We talked about having a tour at clubs in the rundown districts like cabarets.

Kyo – And inviting Chinese or Korean visual bands.

Gara – Wouldn’t older bands that came back be good as well?

Kyo – I wonder if ●●●● or ×××× would come back if we asked?

Gara – Their worldviews are really matching (laughing). If we could have some performer joining as well it would be great.

Kyo – Having so much freedom is a strong point of MERRY and sukekiyo. Of course those are bands, but anything can happen (during their concerts).

- Have you thought about releasing something together outside of concerts and events?

Kyo – No, there were no ideas like that.

Gara – It would be great to do something together.

Kyo – Releasing CD together would be interesting.

Gara – Yeah. We belong to the same company, so it’s totally possible, we could do many things.

Kyo – I told you that it would have been judged, “don’t do things together if you belong to the same company”, but if we got over this obstacle with doing something together, no one would ever said anything anymore.

Gara – And that’s the end of this issue. There’s a thing I want to ask you, how do you want to use our toy knife?

Kyo – Stab Nero.

Gara – Noooooo (laughing). Everyone will buy it just for that?

Kyo – Huh, there are not so many of those, so they will be quite rare? A sukemeri knife.

Gara – No, that’s wrong! It’s “o-inochi okunhareya knife” ! (laughing)

Kyo – Hahaha!

Gara – And like that we also made goods’ names together. All of them use “okunnahareya”. Huh? We have “gum okunnahareya!” too?

Kyo – Yeah. I wanted to make gum that would come up if you pressed your finger.

Gara – When asking Kyo what he wants to make, he replied “a click gum”. Normal adults wouldn’t buy something like that. Press your finger and “yuppi!”. Finished after one try, probably (laughing).

Kyo – That’s good. You buy it for this one try.

- The time before and after the concert feels a bit festive (laughing). Having this opportunity is there anything you would like to tell each other?

Gara – Standing on the stage I won’t be defeated, but considering vocalist’s attitude and the way I should go, he is the closest person who sings and teaches by example. I always wish that it will stay like that forever. Someday I want to be told “you finally reached here”. As long as I’m in a band that’s something I want to accomplish.

Kyo – Why are you talking so seriously??? (laughing). I would like to produce a young band together with Gara. There are many things that two of us cannot do. Probably we could do something super weird. Lay down our names.

Gara – It would be nice if we were releasing some work together with this event. That’s the last of it.

Kyo – And add the young band we produced to the event.

Gara – Enjoyable things keep increasing. After this event I think we will both get the idea of “next time let’s do it like this”.

- Then,please give us a last comment about the event to the fans.

Gara – There are only very strong bands, so I want to finish this event with etching the name MERRY. Not as in drawing fans in for the next show, but what MERRY can show and convey among sukekiyo, Inugami Circus Dan and Metronome. If this event finishes only with “it was fun!” there’s no meaning to it.

- How about you, Kyo?

Kyo – I’m just joining an event organised by MERRY. Usually I just come to the venue, after the show I/we go to eat ramen.

Gara – Saying that, it’s about Kyo so I’m not sure what you will do! I don’t want to feel nervous if something comes up.

Kyo – Giving me so much freedom, it’s really MERRY-like.

Gara – That’s scary (laughing). Thinking that it’s a pressure to me who organized this event, I will do my best.
