Roaming, the latest book by author/ artist duo Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, aka the Tamaki cousins, the creative pair behind one of my all-time favorite comics, Skim, and several other definitive comics, have disappointed me with this one. The good: Jillian, as always, comes through with some great illustrations. She finds some really creative and beautiful ways to lay out pages, dipping deep into abstraction on many of the story's two-page spreads. While there is something lost in moving away from the traditional brushwork of their previous collaborations, maybe there's something gained as well. The real disappointment for me comes from the story, which is rote beyond rote. Two best friends experience some tension in their relationship after one of them starts prioritizing a new crush over their preexisting relationship. This is far from the first Mariko Tamaki story to center around this kind of conflict, but despite her many years of circling this theme, Mariko does not seem to have anything new or interesting to say, nor anything in particular to accomplish in this new retelling. The characters are flat cliches, the love interest an obvious bad influence and a chaotic and uncaring deva, the main character a struggling depressive feeling in need of some kind of freedom, the best friend oblivious and unbearably well-meaning and good-natured, just a puppy waiting to get kicked. It's the shell of a story we've seen a million times with nothing to differentiate other than its New York setting and occasional, incredibly painful use of Gen Z Twitter speak. It's very weird to see someone's craft go backwards with time. Roaming lacks, in my opinion, any of the craft, creativity, and individuality that made Mariko's previous approaches of this stories central conflict so powerful. In stripping these elements away, it revealed a stale cliche in the center of some of my favorite comics and that will probably forever be it's greatest crime.
