[id: two illustrations based on the poster for the movie, “a girl walks home alone at night.” the first is a redraw of the original poster, with the girl’s face in shadow and red background. her vampire teeth peek past her red lips, and her eyes are red. in the second image, her face is normally lit, her striped shirt is visible beneath her chador, and the background is black. her lips are still red. end id.]

Viewing Response 2: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
The Film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night subverts horror tropes of women, with the lead being constructed not only as a monster, but a monster whose sexuality enables her monstrosity, a phenomena Abdi and Calafell refer to as the "monstrous feminist". The idea of monstrous feminism comes from the idea that when women are portrayed as monsters instead of victims, the way they are constructed into monsters always plays on their feminity. In AGWHAAN, we see this particularly in the scene where the Girl kills Saeed. Saeed becomes the Girl's first victim through lust and seduction. The scene begins by the Girl suggestively sucking on Saeed's finger before biting it off and forcing him to suck on it himself, and then eventually feeding on him. In doing this, the Girl horrifies the audience (and Saeed) with her sexuality. However, AGWHAAN doesn't merely paint The Girl as a monstrous feminist. The movie instead goes further to create a lens through which the monstrous-feminine becomes a tool to actively fight against gender and sexual oppression, evident through her choice of victims (Saeed and Hossein).

Curiosity Killed The Rabbit
This fic was posted over a week ago, I've been procrastinating announcing it. Because it's my first try at eroticism. But the fact that I took so long to make an announcement here didn't seem to hinder this fic, cause it already has eight hits, surpassing the Rabbit fic I post before this. And even though that doesn't make it my most read Rabbit fic, I feel like it's been the quickest that many people have picked it up. Thank you perverts <3
And thank you @agwhaan, for helping me settle on the word revulsion, I think I'll be using it for these two again.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Tumblr media
Ana Lily Amirpour's film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, plays withthe natural/learned gender roles in society as we see a female vampire wreak havoc on the men of Bad City. What i appreciate that this specific scene emphasized is that behavior is learned. Shadee Abdi and Bernadette Marie Calafell argue that The Girl warns the young boy, whose purpose is to reprrsent the younger generation who instill hope in the elders that society can change if the teach them right from wrong ahead of time. In typical Iranian societies, women are often victimized by male violators. The predator vs prey relationship is a natural one seen in various ANIMALS in nature, but in HUMAN societies, these are learned roles/behaviors that are not natural. There is a certain predator vs prey relationship that AGWHAAN mimics but in reverse as The Girl is a supernatural being who targets men(who do not stand a chance to her). AGWHAAN recontextualizes feminism, gender roles, and violence as it shifts the predator/prey roles across the genders. It also shows us that those who get hurt by The Girl desrved it by the actions they caused, so although we see the girl murder many men, we know she is doing it as an act of justice/defense rather that through pure desire. She also does not hurt the innocent, which is why she is able to form a relationship with Arash because she can trust him.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night Viewing Response
Ana Lily Amirpour’s film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is classified as a horror/drama and follows a young female vampire who preys on men as a way to protect women. The scene where Saeed is attempting to seduce the Girl after she followed him into his house shows that he lacks fear that something bad will happen to him, which would most likely not happen if the roles were reversed. Throughout the history of horror films, female monsters are often portrayed in a sexual way that makes them appear less threatening. The way the Girl in AGWHAAN is depicted contrast this, as explained by Shadee Abdi and Bernadette Marie Calafell; “Unlike other female vampires who are often highly sexualized, calling attention to their bodies as a source of power, the vampire in AGWHAAN finds her empowerment in her quietness and her ability to blend in, challenging stereotypes of passivity associated with women in the MENA region”. Even though the Girl is not empowered through her sexuality, Saeed still sees her as a sexual being and ultimately ends up being killed by her. The scene is drawn out in a way where the build up and attempt of seduction by Saeed allows the viewer to have a sense of what will happen to him next. The music playing and slow pacing of the scene adds on to the effectiveness of the shot. He puts himself into a very vulnerable situation that makes it easy for him to become the Girl's next victim.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
In "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night," directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the climactic scenes where Arash discovers the truth about the girl and her potential involvement in his father's death are undeniably gripping and filled with tension. As Arash comes to suspect that she may have killed his father, the audience is left on the edge of their seats, not knowing what his next move will be.
The car scene subverts traditional gender roles in a unique way, creating suspense but at the same time instilling a sense of safety, in a departure from the typical damsel-in-distress trope. Here, the girl is not the most vulnerable character in the situation, Arash, the male character, is, which adds depth to their relationship and offers a fresh perspective on power dynamics.
Ana Lily Amirpour's direction keeps the audience engaged, and the stark, black-and-white cinematography intensifies the film's eerie atmosphere. Arash's quiet departure is a moment of reckoning, allowing viewers to focus on his emotions and the unresolved tension.
In this way, "AGWHAAN" masterfully subverts expectations, challenges gender norms, and keeps the audience entertained, making it an extremely thought-provoking and captivating cinematic experience.

Viewing Response #2: AGWHAAN
Through her Iranian vampire film, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)I, writer/director Ana Lily Amirpour subverts the traditional role of women in horror by assigning “The Girl” as both the villain and  pseudo-hero. “The Girl” is a vampire, that roams the streets of Bad City at night to feed on men that have mistreated women. In their essay, “Queer Utopias and a Feminist Iranian Vampire: A Critical Analysis of Resistive Monstrosity in AGWHAAN”, Shadee Abdi and Bernadette Calafell explore the idea of monstrous feminism as a way to free Bad City of toxic masculinity and violence. Her actions with the little boy in particular stood out to me—she approaches him and asks him repeatedly if he is a “good boy”, urging him not to lie to her. She threatens him, saying that she will watch him for the rest of his life, and rip his eyes out of he isn’t a “good boy”. He hadn’t done anything yet, but The Girl’s monstrosity was used as a tool to intervene in the early formations of violent patterns in men. The essay also discusses how the choice to shoot the film in black and white, while highlighting on the long silences and music, heightens tension and makes the movie’s message that much more impactful.
