Bloody hell! There's a cast and a half in this!!
BBC to air Miss Austen, starring Keeley Hawes and Rose Leslie
The four-part drama takes a literary mystery and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heart-breaking story of sisterly love
Tumblr media
The BBC has acquired Miss Austen, a star-studded production of Gill Hornby’s best-selling and much loved novel, produced by Bonnie Productions for MASTERPIECE in the US and distributed by Federation Studios.
The adaptation, from BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth is Missing, Mayflies), will star Keeley Hawes (It’s A Sin, Bodyguard, Line of Duty), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Vigil), Patsy Ferran (Living, Hot Milk), Jessica Hynes (Life After Life, Years and Years), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origin, The Nest), Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey, Shetland), Kevin McNally (The Crown, Ten Percent), Max Irons (Condor, The Wife), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder, Foundation), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton, Archie) and Liv Hill (The Serpent Queen, Elizabeth Is Missing).
Tumblr media
The four-part drama, directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Aisling Walsh (Maudie, Elizabeth is Missing) started filming last month in the UK and is produced by Stella Merz (Gentleman Jack, Renegade Nell).
Miss Austen takes a literary mystery – Cassandra Austen notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters – and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heart-breaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.
Tumblr media
The drama begins in 1830, a while after Jane has died. Cassandra (Keeley Hawes) races to see her young friend Isabella (Rose Leslie) who is about to lose her home following her father’s death. Cassandra is ostensibly there to help her friend, but her real motive is to find a stash of private letters which, in the wrong hands, could destroy Jane’s reputation. On discovering them, Cassandra is overwhelmed as she is transported back to her youth. In flashback, we meet Young Cassy and Jane (Patsy Ferran) as they navigate the infatuations, family feuds and dashed hopes which shaped their lives and laid the foundations for Jane’s unforgettable stories. Cassandra’s re-evaluation of her past eventually leads her to realise how blind she has been to the real cause of Isabella’s heartache and distress. Finding a way to guide Isabella towards true happiness, Cassandra is finally able to understand and celebrate the sacrifices she chose to make for her brilliant sister, Jane.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, says: “Miss Austen is the perfect blend of intriguing mystery, vivid and engaging characters and beguiling period charm – BBC viewers certainly have a treat in store.”
Christine Langan, executive producer, says: “To have this hugely entertaining female-driven story told by such a stellar cast, led by Keeley Hawes, as Bonnie Productions’ first drama is genuinely a dream come true. Gill Hornby has found an ingenious way into the Austen world, creating female characters modern audiences can empathise with and delight in. I’m so honoured to be bringing this wonderful novel to the screen in collaboration with the deeply talented trio of writer, Andrea Gibb, director, Aisling Walsh and producer, Stella Merz.”
Susanne Simpson, MASTERPIECE executive producer, says: “Miss Austen is a beautifully told story about the loves and losses of the Austen sisters. I’m thrilled that this heartfelt, romantic, and funny adaptation is in the hands of a remarkable ensemble cast led by the incredible Keeley Hawes.”
Miss Austen (4x50) is a co-production of Bonnie Productions and MASTERPIECE, in association with the BBC and Federation Stories.
The executive producers are Christine Langan for Bonnie Productions, Susanne Simpson for MASTERPIECE and Polly Williams for Federation Stories. Keeley Hawes, Andrea Gibb and Aisling Walsh are also executive producers.

A Goode Year? Review of 2020
Can’t believe it’s that time again.  What a weird year.  Despite Covid and Lockdowns we have actually seen quite a lot of Matthew Goode this year - so this is a long post to save for when you are bored of eating over the holidays!    I’m not adding links to vids, etc. like previous years because tumblr doesn’t like them anymore [Grr] but all of them are still available and I’ll signpost them.
In January Matthew was finishing filming A Discovery of Witches Season 2 in Turin and we had some glimpses of his leather clad bod in some Teresa Palmer instastories -
Tumblr media
...and in Sky’s ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ Excellent sneak peek.
Tumblr media
... and Joshua’s uncle Lee gave us a few gorgeous pics ...
Tumblr media
In February we saw Matthew and Sophie having fun at the Pre - BAFTA party
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Pics - Dave Benett]
The rest of that month was all about Leap Year’s 10 year anniversary and we drooled over Declan all over again ....
Tumblr media
In March Matthew was finishing filming Silent Night with Keira Knightley when the world changed.  We were introduced to ‘social distancing’.    We had to keep a full Matthew Goode length away from other people - a handy reference is below to remind you -
Tumblr media
[Pic - Ellen Von Unwerth]   On the upside the news broke that Matthew would be playing Keira’s husband in Silent Night (as we suspected) and that they had finished filming before lockdown in the UK.
In April Matthew had his 42nd birthday.  Check out all of the fabulous birthday tributes posted on here around 3rd April.  As a special birthday present Sky released ‘Four Kids and It’ on their cinema channel on the same day with Matthew playing the role of slightly harassed parent David.  It was a goode family movie and just what we needed in lockdown.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

In May we got our first glimpse of Matthew in lockdown when he made a poignant contribution to Bletchley Park’s VE Day celebrations -
Tumblr media
[Vid available on Bletchley Park You Tube]
It was perfectly judged - just Matthew filming himself on his phone, in his garden, complete with birdsong.
Tumblr media
“This is your finest hour.”
According to James Purefoy and Joe Fattorini Matthew shaved off his hair with the dog clippers in lockdown so he looked a bit different the next time we saw him in June!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Matthew appeared via zoom on ‘Dan Nicholls Really Likes Wine’ show - ‘Drinking the Goode Stuff’.  It was great seeing these old friends bantering away and drinking wine.  Of course Goode fans immediately campaigned to get Matthew on The Wine Show @ Home and we got our wish a few weeks later when Joe and Matthew had a virtual wine tasting on zoom -
Tumblr media
The whole session was hilarious.  Matthew was completely adorable and funny as usual.  Amongst other things Matthew told us that Sophie had gone off pork (not a euphemism) and we got another peek at his beautiful home with Sophie’s interior design skills on show.   This is also still available on The Wine Show @Home You Tube.
June also gave us the new trailer for ‘The King’s Man’.  We heard Matthew’s unmistakable voice as the Scots bad guy and there were some tantalising peeks of his character’s mysterious alter ego ‘Shepherd’ -
Tumblr media
In July we finally got to see one of Matthew’s Q & A sessions for actors in training at Bow Street Academy in Dublin that he had recorded in May -
Tumblr media
Matthew gave frank, funny and very practical advice on auditions, preparation for roles and demonstrated how to be scary with a knife!
Tumblr media
August was a bit quiet - we got news that A Discovery of Witches Season 2 would now be aired in January 2021 but a new promo image helped soften the blow of that delay. -
Tumblr media
[Pic - Sky]
Kingsman was delayed yet again....  but at least we got some new promo images of Matthew’s character - Captain Maximillian Morton.  (Morton? Hmm - someone on here (not me!)  spotted the relation to Roxy!]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Pics - Total Film/Empire]
In September Matthew’s new movie ‘The Duke’ received glowing reviews at the Venice Film Festival and we got confirmation of my speculation that he would play barrister Jeremy Hutchinson.
Tantalisingly goode info about Matthew’s up coming movie Silent Night came from Baz Bamigboye from the Daily Mail as he called it ‘the most astonishing Christmas movie ever made’ - hopefully he meant it in a goode way!  We had fun spotting Matthew’s body parts in the pictures accompanying the article ...
Tumblr media
[Pic Daily Mail]
Production on A Discovery of Witches season 3 started under strict Covid rules and Matthew was seen filming for ADOW Season 3 in Bristol -
Tumblr media
[Anthony Ward]
October was a very goode month!
It kicked off with The Wine Show Season 3 teaser -
Matthew ‘sub-section’ Goode joined in with the ADOW cast Q & A.  He was a funny and engaging as ever including an unforgettable impression of a ‘wafter’ and a hasty exit at the end!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had the official ‘first look’ trailer for season 2 of A Discovery of Witches -
Tumblr media
[pic - my edit]
The Wine Show season 3 landed on Amazon Prime in the UK and it is SO goode even tho’ there is less Matthew than usual due to filming clashes with ADOW.  Matthew was still his adorably goofy self and gave us the usual interesting fashion choices and jokes.
Tumblr media
[My Edit]
October also brought us a new tie in cover for Shadow of Night -
Tumblr media
[Pic - Deborah Harkness Twitter]
And as if that wasn’t enough excitement for October we got the official news that there will be another Downton Abbey movie - starting to film in March 2021. Hopefully we will see more of him in this one!
Tumblr media
[Pic - Carnival]
Matthew usually keeps his charity projects private but in November we saw him donating his ADOW ‘wedding day’ boots to be auctioned for the Small Steps Project ....
Tumblr media
...complete with on mud from the set.  Some lucky person is probably stroking that suede as I write this!
Tumblr media
[Pics - Small Steps project]
Matthew also recorded some charming contributions to the #SaveJenny campaign.  He evicted the dog from her favourite chair by the radiator in the kitchen and sat there to read the opening chapter of Wind in the Willows -
Tumblr media
and later ‘The Night before Christmas’ poem complete with music!
Tumblr media
You can still see these contributions and most importantly DONATE  - links are listed below -
Tumblr media
December has been all about A Discovery of Witches season 2 - with a stunning second trailer and plenty of teasers and pictures from Sky and Bad Wolf - there are too many to include but here’s a few -
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Pics my edit / sky/badwolf]
So what of next year?  So many goode things to look forward to.  I’ll do ‘Goode Things coming in 2021′ a bit earlier next year because January is gonna be BUSY for Goode fans!
Thank you SO MUCH for making time to read this blog.  And a big thank you to Goode fans who create content to share with others on here and on matthew-goode.net.  We really appreciate the effort that everyone puts in to sharing the Goode Stuff.
Lastly I have to thank Matthew Goode who patiently tolerates the fan nonsense while he tries to pretend that he doesn’t actually have any fans anyway!
Cheers Matthew!

Downton Abbey’s Phyllis Logan on a sequel, feminism protests, the struggle facing theatres, and her love of animals
Like most in-demand actors, Phyllis Logan’s diary has been unusually bare these past few months. When the coronavirus lockdown was introduced, it immediately closed down film and theatre productions across the world.
But the Downton Abbey star says no matter how busy her future schedule might be, if a sequel is announced to the period drama’s movie spin-off, she would clear the decks to be part of it.
The actor, originally from Johnstone in Renfrewshire, has been in the primetime series since it started 10 years ago, playing housekeeper Mrs Hughes.
She said: “The will is certainly there with everybody – the cast, producers and writer Julian Fellowes – but no one knows what will happen, especially with this lockdown.
“We’re ever hopeful, so fingers crossed. When it could happen, I don’t know – we could all be in our graves by then if this goes on much longer! But if people are given enough warning then I think most of us would make it a priority, no matter what is in the diaries. I think we would be happy to clear our diaries.”
Phyllis has grown used to fans approaching her to talk about Downton, which saw her character wed Mr Carson, played by Jim Carter, in the final series.
“I enjoy it when people come up and say they enjoy the show, or they like the characters together,” she continued. “It’s wonderful to think so many people have been touched by it in some way. It’s given a lot of pleasure to people and I wish it would continue.
“Although, I do like to think I don’t look like Mrs Hughes off-screen, I’m not quite as fuddy-duddy as her. A lot of people say it’s not me, but my voice they recognise.
“Perhaps that’s why I was given the job in Highland Vet – because of my voice.”
Highland Vet is a new documentary series on 5Select, following the team at the most northern mainland vet practice in Britain. D.S. McGregor and Partners cover Thurso, Wick and Caithness, dealing with farm animals, equine, domestic pets and wildlife.
For animal lover Phyllis, who has had a long association with the SSPCA, being asked to provide the voice-over narration for the series was a perfect job. And, as it turns out, it has kept her occupied during lockdown.
“I didn’t have to think about it for very long when I was approached to do it, because it’s right up my street, and it being filmed in the north of Scotland was the icing on the cake,” she admitted.
“You can tell the vets have great heart in dealing with the different animals and their passion and dedication is lovely to watch. It’s heartwarming, exciting and also sad at times, but you look at it and think how lovely it would be to know a vet like that.
“I recorded the first episode in the studio and then work on the next episode came on the day of lockdown. When I went into Covent Garden it was like a ghost town, a bit spooky. It was just me and the engineer in this vast studio, and from then on I was told they would send equipment to my house for me to record the voice-over from there.
“Thankfully, my husband is good with that sort of thing – he’s been very useful, I have to say. It’s been a blessing to have been able to do this – apart from anything else it’s kept us from going mad and a bit stir crazy. It also means I’m still doing some work and being paid for it into the bargain, which is a real blessing.”
Phyllis lovingly recalled Carlos, the rescue lurcher from Battersea that she and her husband, Pirates Of The Caribbean actor Kevin McNally, rehomed.
“He was a lovely fella, so chilled out and laid-back,” she said. “I used to take him walks to Chiswick House, which had beautiful grounds and a big dog walking park. He would run around with all the other dogs and when he went into fifth gear it was a sight to behold. It would make your heart soar to watch it.
“I was lucky to get to do that for the 10 years we had with him. He was quite irreplaceable. We went a bit mad when he passed four or five years ago, and had a small bronze statue made of him. It looks like he’s flying through the air. It’s very tactile.”
Phyllis has been sharing lockdown with Kevin and their son, 24-year-old David, who is a musician.
Just days before the country shut down due to Covid-19, the 64-year-old celebrated the release of her latest film, Misbehaviour, which became a victim of cinema closures.
The film, also starring Keira Knightley, Jessie Buckley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Greg Kinnear, is based on the true story of the 1970 Miss World competition, which saw protestors disrupt the contest that was eventually won by a black woman for the first time.
“We had a small premiere in a Covent Garden hotel which we all went along to, and it was in the cinema for five minutes before lockdown started, so not a lot of people saw it there, which is a shame because it’s a good film,” Phyllis said.
“I remember watching the real thing back in the day. I would have been 13 or 14, and I used to love watching Miss World. I remember vividly Bob Hope being pelted on stage. It was quite a shocker but now I think I’d be right up there with the rest of them, throwing bags of flour – although if you were trying to throw bags of flour now you’re liable to be mugged, it’s in such short supply!” she added. “It became a much bigger movement but that incident put it on people’s radar.
“I’m looking at what is happening now and I think it’s brilliant everyone is out protesting, even during lockdown. If I wasn’t such a stick in the mud about keeping to my own area then I’d be up there myself.”
Phyllis – who has another film, The Last Bus, awaiting release – is also an accomplished stage actor and fears for the future of theatres.
“They struggle to survive at the best of times and if they can’t open at full capacity you do wonder how they can keep going,” she said. “It’s not feasible unless there is proper government investment to see them through the worst of it.”
While the long-term future of theatres remains in limbo, in the short-term, TV and film production will return, and Phyllis says she’ll be watching on closely.
“It’s going to be a bit daunting for the first ones out the trap, they’ll provide the litmus test for how it’s going to go, and everyone’s eyes will be on it,” she said.
“I’m sure companies will be all over the health and safety aspect. I don’t have any worries – I’d be happy to dive straight back in.
“I’m champing at the bit to return and it’s good that Highland Vet is made, because it gives something new for people to watch rather than the endless repeats of whatever’s on.
“Except for re-runs of Downton Abbey, of course, people can watch that as much as they like because hopefully I’ll still get some residuals from it, which will keep me going while I’m not working!”
Phyllis left Scotland in her mid-20s to successfully crack London, having quickly made a name for herself after graduating from the RSAMD in Glasgow.
Having worked on stage in Dundee and Edinburgh, she won a BAFTA for Most Outstanding Newcomer To Film for her role as Janie in her first film, Another Time, Another Place, in 1984.
Other film roles include the Mike Leigh movie, Secrets & Lies. Prior to Downton Abbey, she was best known for playing Lady Jane Feisham in Lovejoy, opposite Ian McShane.
And while it’s been many years since she last worked in Scotland, she does return as often as possible.
“It’s impossible just now, but I try to come back regularly,” she said. “My sister is in Prestwick, my nephew is in Broughty Ferry and I have relatives in Johnstone. I’m looking forward to when I can come back.
“As far as working on a Scottish production, I’m always open to offers. I’ve been speaking to people working in the production side who had moved to London from Scotland for work, and they’re now heading back to make their lives there because enough is happening in Scotland to make it viable.
“That’s encouraging that there’s work to be had, and hopefully that will continue once we’re over this.”

I saw you mention Sandition season 2. Is that a possibility?!?!?! I assumed it would just be a 8 episode miniseries but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for there to be more.
Hey!
It’s just a theory/rumor at the moment that this is in fact only the first season with more to follow. This hasn’t been confirmed and it could potentially depend on how well the show is recieved.
However I do think there’s reasons to think there will be more seasons, namely:
1. Andrew Davies, the creator of the show, said he’d love to do more and that season 1 leaves off in a place where he hopes people want to revisit Sanditon. And when the celebrated writer of Pride and Prejudice 1995, winner of multiple Baftas and writer to some of the best novel adaptations of all time says he’d like to do more, it’s likely that people will take him up on his word.
2. ITV actually commissed the building of very extensive sets for this show, actually building most of the town of Sandtion. It seems odd that they’d invest this much money in what is a limited 8 episode series. Particularily since they no longer have Downton Abbey (their greatest success) and are unlikely to comission a new season of Victoria. I think they’re looking for their new serialized period drama.
3. Theo James is an executive producer on the show. I assume he requested it and they gave him the position because they wanted him to accept the part of Sidney (which was very smart of them). However, if there wasn’t a chance of multiple seasons, I don’t see why Theo would be interested in being executive producer in the 1st place.
Now, there might not be an announcement straight after the show ends (and there might not be one at all, of course). But I do think that if a second season will come into play, they will announce a Christmas special for Sanditon.
This show is so beautiful to look at that it’s made for a Christmas fairy lights, snow everywhere extravaganza. And can’t you just see the promotion now: “Mr Tom Parker cordially invites to Sanditon for the festive season”???
Anyway, it might just be me. I fell in love with Christmas specials watching Downton Abbey.
We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess but I’m with you, @justbrie. I would love a second season!

If ever there was a Burns Supper to be at, then it was most definitely this one.
Last week, a star-studded Burns Bash was held in Los Angeles at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows to raise funds for BAFTA LA’s Scottish Scholarships, which provide financial support to Scottish students studying the creative arts in the United States.
Hosted by Sir Tom and Lady Marion Hunter, TV showbiz presenter Ross King MBE, Chantal Rickards and Daniel Bee, the event brought together stars of the stage and screen, BAFTA patrons and other special guests as they celebrated Robert Burns’ legacy while raising money for a great cause.
A number of TV stars were in attendance, including Lesley King from Downton Abbey, Outlander hero Sam Heughan, and Tony Currie, currently starring in Netflix film Outlaw King, and who impressed as Vincent van Gogh in Doctor Who. Businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter and BAFTA LA CEO Chantal Rickards

Downtown's Phyllis Logan and friends face mid-life crisis in new ITV drama Girlfriends With long, natural, wavy hair, actress Phyllis Logan could not be any more different from the prim and proper Mrs Hughes of her Downton Abbey days. But it has been two years since she graced those stately halls and is no longer trussed up in corsets. Phyllis has moved on. The 61 year old is starring in new ITV drama Girlfriends, brainchild of In The Club writer Kay Mellor, who saw a gap in the market for a show portraying women of a certain age and their struggles and difficulties. Phyllis takes on the role of Linda, whose husband Micky mysteriously goes missing while they are on a cruise to celebrate their anniversary. She has to deal with both the emotional and financial fallout of his disappearance with the support of friends Sue (Miranda Richardson) and Gail (Zoë Wanamaker), who have their own battles to fight. What is striking about this show is that not only are women centre stage, rather than being bit parts compared to the men in their lives, but they are older, wiser and dealing with it together. This is something that Phyllis believes is still relatively unseen on TV today. “We are still mothers and grannies but principally it is us just being women,” she says emphatically. “Usually you’re tagged on being someone else’s appendage, be it a mother, an auntie or, you know, a wife, in the background, so it is nice to be right up there in the foreground of it all and the men are the add-ons as it were. “There are great parts for men in it, too, of course, because it’s by Kay Mellor, but it’s lovely to have three main women protagonists. “This is why it was so exciting to read it because it was very much… women of a certain age and it is all about them and their struggles in their lives and their highs and their lows. But at the root of it is them, their friendship which binds them all together and they come to each other’s aid when times are getting tough. And they do [get tough].”  Phyllis is happily married to actor Kevin McNally, best known for his role in Pirates Of The Caribbean, someone she has described as a “good mate” as well as a partner. She had never believed she would marry a fellow thespian but the two met on the set of drama Love And Reason in 1992 and wed in 1994. Their son David was born in 1996. Before Downton, Phyllis was known for her portrayal of Lady Jane Felsham in Lovejoy in the 1980s, Monica in Mike Leigh’s hit Secrets & Lies and her 1983 Bafta-winning performance of Another Time, Another Place. With a career spanning decades the phenomenally successful actress is perfectly placed to comment on women’s portrayal on screen. So have things changed at all? She picks her words carefully and sighs, “Hmmmm, there is more… well… I don’t know. I have been doing this a very long time. It was always thus that men get cast and their wives generally get cast 15, 20 years younger and that’s still quite… So I suppose that hasn’t changed much.  “But I think maybe there are slightly more for women over 50. People have discovered that they’re actually quite interesting and they still have a viability and a sexuality about them and an attractiveness or whatever. Maybe people are beginning to cotton on to that, I hope. And there is a market for it definitely.” Born in Paisley, just outside Glasgow, Phyllis may seem an unusual choice for Yorkshire lass Linda, but Kay Mellor had the actress in mind right from the beginning. The character is as close to the writer’s heart as it is possible to be, based on her best friend since she was three years old. The real “Linda” and Kay met on their first day of school and they still see each other every week, living close to each other. Kay credits her friend with keeping her grounded in the midst of her success and she wanted Girlfriends to not only show that authentic, deep relationship we can only have with our oldest confidantes, but the unique struggles that are prevalent today. She describes people of around 50 as the “sandwich generation” – women who are simultaneously caring for small grandchildren and their own elderly parents. The characters between them deal with age discrimination, divorce, financial problems, difficult children and demanding parents. They’re stretched to their limits and on the verge of breaking, which is where their support system comes in. Phyllis believes many viewers will relate to the characters, including some of her own girlfriends. “I suppose it is that thing with all the characters. I mean we have got Gail, who is looking after a grandchild and a mother who is going slightly off the rails, and I can look at so many of my girlfriends who have got to that stage now where they have got ageing parents. "That becomes a worry but you still have to look after small grandchildren. I can relate very much to that and in Linda’s case her kids have flown the nest so there is a bit of an empty nest syndrome going on there. She doesn’t have that responsibility any more, so yeah I can identify with all of that.  “I’ve got a few friends who have been there throughout various things in my life… and they always will be. I’ve known them forever. You do pick up new young friends. I’ve got some young friends now, which is quite nice actually, but there are always stalwarts who will be there forever and have been since you were a young teenager. So it is nice to have friends like that.” Some of those new young friends were undoubtedly found during the six years that Phyllis worked on the hugely successful Downton Abbey. Her character Mrs Hughes was the head housekeeper at the stately home, a kindly but strict figure to the younger maids and serving girls. Her relationship with butler Carson captured the hearts of the nation with its reserved romance and Mrs Hughes quickly became a fan favourite. As many as 7.4 million people tuned in for the finale on Christmas Day 2015, with a further 10 million in the United States. Downton’s success on both sides of the pond can only be described as a whirlwind, but when asked about the show Phyllis seems pleased to have a new challenge to take on. “I don’t have to wear corsets for a start so that’s brilliant,” she laughs. “I mean period dramas are a different thing altogether. Much more leisurely pace but to a stultifying point really. This is fast. It is fantastic.” Girlfriends is on Wednesday at 9pm on ITV.

Menopause in my 40s put me through hell, reveals Downton star: Actress Phyllis Logan opens up about ‘unfortunate’ experience ahead of new ITV drama Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan has opened up about going through the menopause in her mid-forties, and the relief she felt at having ‘crammed a child out’ beforehand. The 61-year-old said that although her ‘unfortunate’ experience is now a 'thing of the past’, she knows many women of a similar age who wake up with damp bed-sheets due to hot flushes. The Scottish actress, who played Mrs Hughes in the hit period drama, said she is 'delighted’ that the menopause is being addressed head-on in an upcoming primetime drama, Girlfriends, on ITV because so many women 'suffer’. Miss Logan said it was 'long overdue’ to see a TV series covering the menopause and other issues affecting middle-aged women.
She said: ‘I can speak about mine because I unfortunately started it when I was in my mid-40s.
‘So it’s a bit of a thing of the past now. Thank god I managed to cram out a child before that, because otherwise I wouldn’t have been…
'It affects so many people. And the older you get the more people you know that are suffering and waking up with sheets wringing and having to tear their clothes off in the middle of the tube station.
'It’s hellish really. I’m delighted [it’s in this drama], long overdue isn’t it?’
In the first episode of Girlfriends, which airs on ITV in the New Year, Zoe Wanamaker’s character is shown dabbing at her neck, experiencing a hot flush and discussing her 'mood swings’.
The eight-part series, also starring Cold Feet’s Miranda Richardson, will address age discrimination and the 'sandwich generation’, which refers to people who care for older and younger relatives. Miss Logan, who lives with her husband, actor Kevin McNally, in Chiswick, London, discussed the fear of ageing that is portrayed by several characters in the drama.
Asked if she felt that her career may have an end point, she said: 'It might be thinner on the ground, some of the jobs, but there’s always room for 60-plus, 70-plus women.
'There’s the lovely Wendy Craig, we had to juggle her days filming because she was filming something else in Cheshire.
'I suppose there has maybe been blips here and there where you think 'Oh this is a bit slack at the minute’. So yeah, definitely there have been times. For the time being I’m feeling quite positive.’
However, she said she is currently not letting her hair go grey, explaining: 'I’m trying not to have grey hair. One of these days I’m going to let it go altogether.’
Meanwhile, Bafta-winning screenwriter Kay Mellor said that 'nobody tells you anything’ about the menopause and she wanted to include the topic in her new drama Girlfriends so 'it’s not a shock’.
Miss Mellor, who was awarded the BAFTA Dennis Potter award in 1997 for Outstanding Writing for Television, said she wanted to 'celebrate’ middle-aged women.
She added: 'Nobody tells you anything [about the menopause]. I thought 'I’ll write a programme about it’.
'I want to write about it. I celebrate it, and I think it’s a good thing. Every stage in a woman’s life is an amazing thing. We need to talk about stuff so that it’s not a shock.’
Recalling her own experience, she said: 'I used to think 'why have I got these hot flushes all the time? I keep getting hot all the time’.
And somebody went 'you’re probably going through the menopause’, and I said 'What?’ And I said to my mum 'You didn’t tell me about menopause’ and she said 'Oh I had my menopause when I was in Lewis’s, got hot, ran outside and it was over’. I said to her 'well mine has been going on for 10 years’.

For Their Royals Entertainment.
BEFORE I BEGIN: Yes, I know that other royals have attended film premieres and other entertainment settings. However, Prince William & Prince Harry attending the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere feels different.
I remember back in 2013, when The Cambridges and Prince Harry visited the set of Harry Potter, I felt like that visit was purely for their entertainment. I know they claimed that the visit was to support The Royal Foundation, but it really just seemed like they wanted to be entertained for a couple of hours and hang around celebrities.
I do remember when the media was reporting on the event, people were struggling to find a reason behind the visit. People were still in the “fawning over everything Prince William and Kate Middleton do” phase and no one would call them, all three of them, out on the visit being solely for their entertainment.
I felt the same way when in 2015, Kate visited the set of Downton Abbey. She was completely giddy and very happy to be there. After the visit, I was again wondering what the purpose was.
Was it to support some charity?
Was it to support Kate’s love of British history?
Or was it just entertain Kate for a couple of hours?
However, when Prince William and Prince Harry went to visit the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi people openly questioned the purpose of the visit. Kensington Palace said it was to support The Royal Foundation, but again how?
The entire visit just seemed to an excuse for the two of them to have a lightsaber fight. To meet Luke Skywalker and to just have fun.
Now, with the attendance to the film premiere, I am seriously questioning why? If they want to support movies and films, then why not attend independent British films? Why not support the British Film Industry?
Yes, I know Prince William is president of BAFTA, but he doesn’t even show up for that. When he does it’s because he gets bad press for not doing his job.
For a lot of the visits that “support” The Royal Foundation, I often wonder how? I mean the foundation is considered to be a joke. It barely brings in money and people are really starting to question its legitimacy.
SIDE NOTE: I’m bummed that Meghan Markle is joining The Royal Foundation. However, maybe she can turn it into something that is not a joke. Maybe she can bring some legitimacy to it.
Yes, I know that other royals have attended movie premieres. However, the other royals make serious major charitable contributions. They work far more than The Cambridges and Prince Harry, combined.
To me, it just seems like the younger royals, to a lesser extent Prince Harry, want to be entertained. They think they deserve it for some reason.
SUBMITTED
In some cases it does feel like they are using their position for access to their favourite things.
They may say they are ‘supporting British Film’ but I don’t think Star Wars needs help with that do they? As you say, Independent Films, yes, Star Wars? no.
It is interesting you bring up Downton Abbey again, that to me was full, pampering to Kate, ESPECIALLY as Sophie had been there the week before! 2 Royal visits in a week? Sophie there with a First Lady (of somewhere I forget) and then Kate is there because........
