FAVORITE BOOKS ✿ Persuasion by Jane Austen
They had no conversation together, no intercourse but what the commonest civility required. Once so much to each other! Now nothing! There had been a time, when of all the large party now filling the drawing-room at Uppercross, they would have found it most difficult to cease to speak to one another...there could have been no two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangement.

the blind pig - aziza barnes
Tumblr media
I think this book has changed me. I would not call this an easy read, in fact, it's far from it. This book touches on a lot of hard topics like sex, race, and gender, but it has resonated with me. It's darkly beautiful but has been possibly one of the best things I've ever read related to how I experience my gender and the world occasionally, albeit with very different experiences.
So, would I recommend this? Yes.
5/5 ⭐️
"you're not alone in this. I can't stay human all the time too."
barnes' book captures a lot within it. I was recommended this book at a conference by some workers from Not A Cult after saying I liked work by Savannah Brown and Rhiannon McGavin. They gave me a couple others, but this was the book I knew I needed to jump into right away.
To put it simply, this book is...odd. I would call it hybrid, in the formatting of it. There are pages written in prose, others more resembling poetry, large chunks written in second person as well as writing dialogue more often in a classic script format instead of the traditional dialogue often seen in novels.
The writing is also very abstract but in a cool and fantastical way. Its grammar descriptions break from conventional, "standard" to AAVE and word salad in something that feels like exactly what a breakdown feels like. There are long metaphors that comeback similar to how a comedian might circle back on a joke from the begining of the show towards the end. It makes the reading pay off and the story of finding yourself in the world hit so much harder.
The story does go into some more graphic descriptions of abuse, racism, and sex, something to be aware of, but I think if you're in a place and position to be able to read it, you absolutely should.

And maybe that was what real, adult love was. Being fearless enough to hold each other close no matter how catastrophic the world became. Loving each other with enough ferocity to quell the fears of the past. Just fucking being there.”

🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌟 Format: Digital and Audiobook from Libby Author: Danya Kukafka Narrator: Mozhan Marno, Jim Meskimen Publisher: HarperCollins and Harper Audio Danya Kukafka’s latest is a take on the psyche of a serial killer 12 hours from his execution- but where the author stands out is taking the readers into the lives of 3 women impacted by his actions- Ansel Parker’s mother- a 63 year old who is reflecting on her journey after quitting on her family trying to find herself- Hazel- twin sister to Ansel’s wife and Saffron, a homicide detective who’s life is engulfed trying to get the 3 dead girls justice and families the closure. Amidst all is Ansel who lives in a igloo of his theories and believes in the possibility of a second chance. “There would be no story, for these girls alone. There would be no vigil, no attention at all. They are relevant because of Ansel and the fascination the world has for men like him” The theme is relevant but rather than going into the gore of the killings, this was a unique take on the pain felt by the protagonists. The pain of a mother who never got to send that 1 letter which possibly could have saved her son- pain felt by a sister who inspite of her best efforts failed to protect her twin- pain of an officer who knew all along but couldn’t bring the criminal to justice because of the futility of the judicial system- and pain of the killer who somehow couldn’t bring out enough of the good in him. Not an easy read but highly recommended. One of the books of the year! “There is good and there is evil, and the contradiction lives in everyone. The good is simply the stuff worth remembering. The good is the point of it all. The slippery thing you have always been chasing” #bookreview #notesonanexecution #danyakukafka #psychologicalthriller #womenfiction #thriller #libby #scribdaudiobook #favbook #bookrecommendations #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf2iG_PrQJm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

favourite books: the jasmine throne by tasha suri
imprisoned by her dictator brother, malini spends her days in isolation in the hirana: an ancient temple that was once the source of the powerful, magical deathless waters — but is now little more than a decaying ruin. priya is a maidservant, one among several who make the treacherous journey to the top of the hirana every night to clean malini’s chambers. she is happy to be an anonymous drudge, so long as it keeps anyone from guessing the dangerous secret she hides. but when malini accidentally bears witness to priya’s true nature, their destinies become irrevocably tangled. one is a vengeful princess seeking to depose her brother from his throne. the other is a priestess seeking to find her family. together, they will change the fate of an empire.

FAVORITE BOOKS ✿ Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
She was struck however, beyond her expectation, by the grandeur of the Abbey, as she saw it for the first time from the lawn...Catherine had seen nothing to compare with it; and her feelings of delight were so strong, that without waiting for any better authority, she boldly burst forth in wonder and praise. The General listened with assenting gratitude; and it seemed as if his own estimation of Northanger had waited unfixed till that hour.

The Secret Series Non-Spoiler Review:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 As you may already know from my reel, bookshelf post, or comments I make a lot on other posts, I absolutely love this series. Not only do I have a soft spot for it because it’s some of the books that got me into reading, but I reread it last year and they are objectively, fricking fantastic. My favorite thing about this series has and always will be the narrator/author (see second picture for example). Just like the sass and the jokes and the occasion defining of words in the footnotes: I cannot get enough. Like there’s another whole plot there (that - mini spoiler - ends up being tied into the main story). The characters are also amazing. Cass the young survivalist who plans for everything and Max-Earnest the puzzle-solver who is terrible at jokes but somehow still funny. The plot is so good in each book I can’t choose a favorite or least favorite of the bunch (unlike every other series I’ve read that usually at least has one book that is worst than the others). These books are like the definition of “it’s about the journey not the destination” as from book 1 we are searching for a secret we’re not sure if we will ever find, and yet it is never slow. You get to watch the characters grow and change, becoming more confident in who they are. And it doesn’t even end when the book is over because my other favorite thing about these books, especially when I was young, is the appendices (learned that word from book 4). I had so much fun testing to see if I was a super-taster, making disguises for the book (mine from a kid in pic 3), and learning the magic tricks. These books also have some really great full page art for each chapter. Not only did I immensely enjoy these books (this review might honestly just be a test to see how many positive words I can use to describe these books), but as a kid I learned a lot from them. I will never stop recommending these books to people no matter how old you are because I think they are something every mystery/adventure book-lover should experience. Please just read them. 🥺 #thesecretseries #bookreviews #bookreview #fivestarreview #fivestarrating🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #fivestars #favbook #favbooks #favoritebooks #favoritebook #favoriteseries #favoritebookseries #middlegradebooks #middlegradefantasy #middlegradefiction #middlegradereads #thenameofthisbookissecret #ifyourereadingthisitstoolate #thisbookisnotgoodforyou #thisisntwhatitlookslike #youhavetostopthis #maxernst #cass #badmagic #badluck #badnews #thebadseries
