Awards season is inching to a close with the last gasp of screenings coming up the week of January 8th. My favourite movie of the year is SALTBURN and Amazon-MGM is holding three screenings of it on the same day to end its FYC run. The same night Disney finally remembers THE CREATOR exists and is having a screening/Q&A with its director Gareth Edwards.
Notable award season dates:
Jan. 6th-7th: The Creative Arts Emmys. This is the portion of the Emmys that awards the winners of the Outstanding Guest Star category. TED LASSO has four in this category: Three who have all been previously nominated for their roles on the show: Harriet Walter, Sarah Niles and Sam Richardson; and newbie Becky Ann Baker as Dottie Lasso.
If James Lance wasn't promoted to regular, surely he would have received and likely won a S3 nomination in this category.
James and his hair situation with his fellow voice-over artists for the BBC Radio 4 show "We Forced a Bot to Write This Show".
Tumblr media
Jan. 7th: The Golden Globes
Prayer circles for Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike for their work in SALTBURN and TED LASSO, Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wed. Jan. 10: The SAG-AFTRA awards nominations
Sun. Jan 14th: The Critics Choice Awards . Hate that there was no love for TED LASSO and that SALTBURN actors and the script was ignored (but at least the artisans were recognized).
They were robbed!
Tumblr media
Really pulling for Da'Vine Joy Randolph of THE HOLDOVERS, Charles Melton of MAY DECEMBER and for Young Actor/Actress, Milo Machada Graner for ANATOMY OF THE FALL.
Tumblr media
If Milo wasn't this category, I would be rooting for THE HOLDOVERS' Dominic Sessa who is in the same category. Though, Sessa will very likely win.
Tumblr media
Mon. Jan 15th: The Primetime Emmys. We have nods for Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, nods for outstanding writing, directing, editing, production design, VFX, hairstyling, original music & lyrics and series. I am just hoping for some wins.
Tumblr media
Thurs. Jan. 18th: The BAFTA Film Awards nominations.
Tues. Jan 23rd: The Academy Awards nominations
During this time Sundance Film Festival will be live (Jan 18th-28th) ,there we will likely get a couple of presumptive nominees for 2024-2025 film awards season.
Tues. Jan. 23: Academy Awards nominations. I'm a broken record. I'm all in on SALTBURN, especially hoping for nominations for Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike.; and one for Best Film. But as I was all in on BABYLON last year and it got goose eggs, no film should want me as a fan.
I'm hoping for JA Bayona's SOCIETY OF THE SNOW gets a nom and win for Best International.
Tumblr media
And as France didn't submit ANATOMY OF A FALL (I assume there's too much English spoken for it to qualify), I hope it gets the same love last year's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT received and it's put up for Best Picture.
Tumblr media
Sun. Feb. 18: BAFTA Awards.
Sat. Feb. 24: Screen Actors Guild Awards
Sun. Feb. 25: Spirit AwardsSun. Mar. 10: Academy Awards
Then we pause until late April and Emmy season kicks right up again and we continue the dance.

Now, look, this is a sad moment right here. For all of us. And there ain't nothing I can say, standing in front of you right now, that can take that away. But please do me this favor, will you? Lift your heads up and look around this locker room. Yeah? Look at everybody else in here. And I want you to be grateful that you're going through this sad moment with all these other folks. Because I promise you, there is something worse out there than being sad, and that is being alone and being sad. Ain't nobody in this room alone.

At a TV studio in West London in late April, Jason Sudeikis is gamely attempting to re-create the iconic 1972 Cosmopolitan magazine centerfold shot of Burt Reynolds for EW's photographer. Like Reynolds, Sudeikis is sporting a mustache, which he has grown to portray the titular role of an American football coach-turned-British Premier League soccer team manager on the beloved Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso. But that's where the similarities end. While Reynolds was lying naked on a bearskin rug, Sudeikis is stretched atop a wooden bench in Lasso's locker-room set. The Saturday Night Live veteran is also fully clothed. The revealing part happens when a stylist asks Sudeikis if he wants to see the shots the photographer has taken. It is an opportunity 99 people out of 100 in this situation would take. Not Sudeikis. "No, I trust you. Read the sign," says the star, 45, pointing to a piece of paper his character placed on the wall of the locker room in the very first episode of the show. A piece of paper that simply yet profoundly reads BELIEVE. (x)

"We saw you from across the bar and we like your vibe.."

With TED LASSO ending (and it is ending. I don't care about all the hedging that still persists about, "We told *this* story", the show's done. They need to hush their butts with that) it's time to look towards the future. What is on the horizon for AFC Richmond.

Ted Lasso - Season 1 (2020) Review
Tumblr media
I don’t watch football. Yet I watched this show. Does it makes sense? No, but neither does 2020!
Plot: Small-time American football coach Ted Lasso is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.
Here I am once again taking advantage of my 1-year free Apple TV+ subscription thanks to my very dear to my heart iPhone 11 that I got this year for my birthday and its great, truly amazing, bet you don’t have one, but I do, so I laugh in your face selfishly and make you hate me..... So Apple TV+, a fairly new streaming service that still has a long way to go before reaching the heights of Netflix, Amazon Prime, or even Disney+. So far from the Apple TV+ content I’ve only watched Mystic Quest: Raven’s Banquet from the producers of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia that has its enjoyment value, but now I’ve found Ted Lasso, which is easily superior on so many merits! Here we find a show with such a simple fish-out-of-water premise, that is uplifted by the fact that it is such a feel-good wholesome comedy that is so welcome in the dark unprecedented times we live in!
At the end of the day, when it comes down to it, what makes a show excel? Any ideas? Any takers? You there, eighths seat in the third row with your hand up so high up I’m afraid its going to rip off and fly into the sky like a rocket, what you got? Huh? What was that? Ah, good try, no, its not the narrative, though that is a very good attempt! 5 points to Gryffindor! Anyone else? Anyone know what is the main key to a show’s success? Hey, what was that? The soundtrack? Ah, you’re sweet! But no. The answer is - characters. When you have a TV show, what do you do most? You spend time with these characters. You get to know them. You imagine yourself in their shoes. You need these people to sympathise with, and if you don't care about any of them, then you obviously would not care for the show as a whole, and at that point is where the writers would lose you. In the case of Ted Lasso, this show hits the goal (no pun intended!.....who am I kidding, totally intended!!) when it comes to the characters. You actually fall in love (not sexually, calm down!) with every single main member of the cast, as they are all so likeable and good in these roles.
Jason Sudeikis reprises his character of Ted Lasso, which he originally portrayed years ago in a series of promos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premiere League, and by the way those skits are hilarious and you should check them out on the Tube of You when you get the chance! The character works due to his overall positive attitude, and being the square peg in a round hole by coaching an English soccer team having only the knowledge of American football, and yet as the show progresses you realise you may not actually need that knowledge to be a great coach. I mean, maybe in reality that message isn’t 100% true, but its very endearing to see it here. Sudeikis brings so much light, charm and innocent charisma to the role, yet there are also surprisingly deeper levels to his character that are unravelled as the show progresses, and as such Lasso is very interesting to watch. The rest of the cast all excel too. Hannah Waddingham plays the owner of the club, who at first is pitched (get it?) as the antagonist, however, again, due to the nature of the series there are not really any straight up villains. Everyone has a reason to making bad decisions. For instance, the team’s most successful player Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) is presented as egotistical and only caring about himself and pushing everyone else down in process, yet again, you then find out about problems he had since childhood revolving around bad parenting, and again all the puzzle pieces are put in place. We also have Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) coming off as a straight faced no-crap-taker captain of the team, but, again, surprise surprise, he turns out to have a heart of gold. Honestly, the only real prick is Anthony Stewart Head who plays, well, a prick who interestingly enough is also called Rupert (assuming a minor Easter Egg for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
The show at the end of the day is about building team spirit, and how one does not need to win or lose to prove themselves. There will be moments where you are up and when you’re down, but as long as you work together you will achieve *insert Borat voice* great success!! All in all, Ted Lasso is a great show that shows a lot of promise, and heck, you don’t even need to be a football fan to enjoy it - exhibit A is writing this review right now!
Overall score: 8/10
