je2006 is notorious for the post-fire scene and the post-bertha scene but what truly gets me is the part where jane takes rochester back to her room to show him the wedding attire bertha messed up,, lord forgive me for i am well aware jane and rochester's relationship shouldn't be glamourised or romanticised and this adaptation does Just That but i would also move mountains for toby stephens' rochester to give me a hug and a kiss on the head

i have many qualms with this adaptation, but i think one of the reasons why JE1997 irks me so much is bc rochester had so much potential imo, he could've been such a good example of rochester's mean and unpleasant side (plus he fits the 'physically unattractive' criterion, at least in my eyes), which the scriptwriters were going for, i assume, but they ended up turning him into what i can only describe as a borderline parody of the character
plus, ciaran hinds is not a bad actor, so i'm fairly confident he would've done rochester justice, had it not been for how atrociously his character was written 💔💔

i always chuckle when i remember that at some point someone on the je2006 scriptwriter team decided that the bedroom fire scene could greatly benefit from rochester having his entire bare chest out. they rly said "okay we have the elements of fear suspense surprise and mystery yknow what would really compliment the atmosphere? boobs"

one of the reasons why i love je2006 rochester so much is because of how good of a storyteller/speaker toby stephens is
say what u want about rochester, but the one thing i genuinely enjoy about his character is how well-spoken he is and how there's a certain charisma in his speech
i'm always thoroughly entertained while reading his lines, even though half the stuff he says irritates me to no end lmao, simply because he words everything so well and delivers his sentences in a way that captivates and leaves me wanting to hear more
and even though the dialogue in je2006 has been modernised to a certain extent and it's definitely not the most faithful to the book, i feel like toby did an excellent job at making sure that rochester's "charisma of speech", so to say, could still be felt, even if the lines weren't always as intricate as they are in the book

watching je2006 for the first time felt like a jumpscare to me because while reading the book i had somehow managed to produce an image of rochester in my mind that was almost identical to the one played by toby and that really spooked me when i first saw him lmao

will Never get over that part in je2006 where rochester is asking jane about her friends and family & upon learning that jane is without family and the only friend she's ever had died when they were kids his response is "you're lucky" bro what 😭😭

watching je2006 again (what else is new) and losing my mind over the way helen points out how cold jane is and urges her to snuggle up next to her under the blankets & later on rochester wraps his dressing gown around jane and tells her she will never be cold again 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

speaking of je2006 rochester (honestly when am i not) i remember reading a comment or two somewhere talking about how toby's rochester was inaccurate because he was too easy-going and friendly and it perplexes me every time i think about it
now everyone is entitled to their own opinion ofc and i'm not here to tell anyone they're wrong and i'm right but it really confuses me because bro gets on my nerves like,, every other scene dhsjhshs i really start questioning whether or not we're even talking about the same adaptation
plus even though he is a pain in the ass i really disagree with the image of rochester as a 100000% stone-cold mean and aloof man,, in addition to that sliver of charisma he has we also get a few glimpses at a side of him that is more humorous and kind than his usual disposition throughout the book and i love that toby's performance captured and combined all sides of rochester's character instead of just giving us Some Constantly Rude Guy Who Has Absolutely Zero Qualities Which Could Make Him Appealing In Anyone's Eyes But People Love Him Anyway For Some Reason

can’t stop wondering about the sequence of events that took place prior to the fortune teller meeting the ladies in je2006. how did she go about it? did rochester come up with like,,, a whole script for her to memorize beforehand? did he sit her down and give her a rundown of their shortcomings? more importantly how did she manage to sit through the whole thing and not burst into laughter at the fact that some man in his late 30s is paying her to roast the shit out of his guests and play matchmaker with his 18 year old employee? god i love this adaptation

y'all ever watch an adaptation of a book and are completely lost as to why certain details have been changed
like i understand if there's a particular vision the scriptwriters are going for but sometimes there's simply no real explanation as to why they deviated from the book. for example why are so many blanche ingrams blonde. why does st.john want to take jane to africa and not india in je2006. those are such miniscule details that have no impact on the plot so why change them

No, no, I am not obsessed, why do you ask? Best adaptation ever! Yep, it has some... flaws? Not exactly, just tiny digressions from the book :) (the Gypsy, you know).
Jane Eyre 2006 BBC miniseries. Ruth Wilson, Toby Stephens, Christina Cole, Andrew Buchan, ...  ... and Haddon Hall!
